I met these guys around the time this was on MTV. :) The Van Halens were shopping in the mall and DLR hung out in the record store where I worked. I can tell you a couple things. First, he was very nice to a shy girl. Second, his trainer was the famous kickboxer, Benny the Jet. And Roth took his martial arts and fitness very, very seriously. There was a lot he could have bragged on, but mostly he told me about Benny and how hard he'd practiced doing a backbend so he could pick up a handkerchief from the floor behind him. (Look at the back of their first album.) A lot of people put him down, but he's a showman and he's dedicated to what he does.
There was conflict between Eddie Van Halen and David Lee Roth. Some say it was either David made a decision to go solo or Eddie fired him from the band.
I absolutely loved your reaction to this one Jamel! I'm glad I've been finding these old gems of yours, not to mention all of your new ones that got me on the hunt in the first place, I hope you read this and leave me a heart!

David Lee Roth know's martial arts kick's, jump's, splits and round house kicks, do to the martial arts training when he was younger. Van Halen has been and will be one of the Greatest Rock Bands from the 1980's and now. The younger generation is really getting into the whole late 70's and 1980's rock music! Rock On 🤘🤟✊👊🤙
I love Van Halen back in the 80s! David Lee Roth was an amazing entertainer and Eddie Van Halen is among the greatest guitarists! We all know what he did for Michael Jackson”s “Beat It”! Amazing video!
When this song comes on the radio unannounced, I know *exactly* what it is from the first chord on the keyboard - literally the first note - that synth sound is totally distinctive and makes that song what it is. Fantastic song that is absolutely the definition of 1980s hard rock. The fact that it still comes on commercial radio stations *37 years* after it was released tells you a lot. Thanks for reacting to it!
Me and my dad used to get stones and he’d play the first three seconds of a random song and I’d have to guest it. It’s be the most obscure sound or some shit, sometimes not even a note of music and I’d call it and he’d be like WTF?? Good times
Edward created that sythn sound. That sound did not exist before "Jump" was written...he got a new synth and modified it to get the sound he was looking for.
Diamond Dave was unique in everyway lol. Panama, Everybody Wants Some, Hot For Teacher, Running With The Devil are some bangin songs to check out. Dave could definitely Jump. Thanks.
Growing up in the 80's Watching MTv every afternoon after school was a ritual for all 80's kids. I was raised on this video!! It truly is a COOL ASS video!!
That's what DLR called The"10 mile high"jump off the drum riser and yes he was a black belt in martial arts, and yes Eddie Van Halen is the greatest guitar player that has ever lived
The front man singer is David Lee Roth who is a practicing martial artist. He studied Kenjutsu, a Japanese sword fighting style since his adolescent age. If I remember he also has studied Brazilian Jujitsu, Kenpo Karate and I believe Aikido. So those jumps, splits and kicks he actually was serious about. PEACE to All!!!
There’s kind of a beautiful humble confidence to saying “Can’t you see me standing here I got my back against the record machine / I ain’t the worst that you’ve seen” as a pickup line. I don’t claim to know what this song is about for real or anything. Perhaps it’s just an innocent tune about the joys of jumping. But I’ve always read it as an ode to this kinda lazy, bar’s-closing-in-15-minutes, ditch last, “hey, why not?” hookup proposition. There’s a sort of sleazy elegance to it that I admire in spite of myself.
I saw them in concert in 1978...I was 15....watching Eddie Van Halen and David Lee Roth brought out alot of impure thoughts in my mind by their athletic abilities on stage!!!! Back then, we would call them "all nighters" and yes, I was 15.....too bad, still would have done them into my 20-30's! RIP EVH!!!

There was conflict between Eddie Van Halen and David Lee Roth. Some say it was either David made a decision to go solo or Eddie fired him from the band.
Im still pissed
The 80s was a magic time. Energy, talent, style, dances, clubs, fun
And no cell phones!
David Lee Roth is a Black Belt n then some through the years n Eddie Van Halen is a guitar god ! Prayers up 🙏
DLR was doing martial arts since he was a little kid and even till now. He incorporated it into his music and that was his brilliance.
Eddie Van Halen plays guitar on Michael Jackson's Beat It!
Yep, he did the solo
@ericj305 lol
Steve Lukather from Toto wrote and played the guitar part. Eddie came in and played only the solo part.
@@TheSarge1991 I wonder how much money Steve's made from that song.
@MJ W I've heard that 😊
I absolutely loved your reaction to this one Jamel! I'm glad I've been finding these old gems of yours, not to mention all of your new ones that got me on the hunt in the first place, I hope you read this and leave me a heart!
I remember being a kid, living in Hayward, California....hearing this.
Made me so happy....A Street wasn't happy.
You what's up I grow up in Hayward CA by Hesperian Blvd calaroga Ave .
Diamond Dave once said he had to quit jogging because the ice kept coming out of his drink ! I got a drink in my hand got my toes in the sand all I need is a beautiful girl Oh Ya !!!
The best frontman of all times and my favorite band forever only the original no Van Hagar
Van Halen ended in 1985. What are you talking about?
@@docsavage8640 were you even there
@@michaelanngarcia4012 Matt is saying that Van Halen was never Van Halen after Dave quit. He's agreeing with you, and you get rude?
@@TheKatdawg65 no shit Dave was the only frontman
David Lee Roth know's martial arts kick's, jump's, splits and round house kicks, do to the martial arts training when he was younger. Van Halen has been and will be one of the Greatest Rock Bands from the 1980's and now. The younger generation is really getting into the whole late 70's and 1980's rock music! Rock On 🤘🤟✊👊🤙
Benny the Jet
Thanks.

Yes agree wholeheartedly.
Growing up in the 80's Watching MTv every afternoon after school was a ritual for all 80's kids. I was raised on this video!! It truly is a COOL ASS video!!
He is a martial artist, has been training in kenjutsu since he was twelve years old, and also practices kenpō and Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
DLR is all the myths and legends wrapped up into one man.. Totally an amazing and interesting human.
That's what DLR called The"10 mile high"jump off the drum riser and yes he was a black belt in martial arts, and yes Eddie Van Halen is the greatest guitar player that has ever lived
Great to dance to van halen glory of 80s
Its a sad lyric in a happy melody....its one of Dave's moves. He did the same in Jamie's Crying. Happy melody, sad lyrics.
Ya don't have to go home, but ya can't stay here!
Fun DLR song is “Ice Cream Man”
Talk about innuendo…
Lol yes.
Great choice Mona!
RIP EVH!!!
David Lee Roth was also a very competent martial artist - so very flexible.
All the same - hell of a landing ! 😃
Gotta do Diamond Dave's (David Lee Roth) cover of " California Girls" or "Just a gigalo . Fosho!!!!
I'm just a gigalo and everywhere I go, ppl know the part I'm playin...
*gigolo
@@bigdicklarryc Thanks Karen
Don't be mad because you're stupid. 😂😂😂 Nothing worse than a dumbass that's arrogant. You could have kept the sarcasm to yourself. It's your fault you aren't as bright as you would like people to think you are. 😂😂😂
When Eddie Van Halen “cut loose” on the guitar & gave a song the “extra OOMPH” it needed to make it a hit, it was an experience to behold 🔥🎸🎸🎸🔥 For those of us fortunate enough to live through the late 80’s & 90’s, we got to experience some of the greatest guitarists in the world & even before that, like Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Richie Sambora.... To name just a few & Eddie Van Halen...... DAMNNN!!! He was epic to watch & listen to 🎸🎸🎸✅✅✅..... The big hair, the big outfits, the big sounds..... TRULY A GREAT TIME TO BE ALIVE 🔥✊️😜🔥
Unmistakably the Very BEST, most PHOTOGENIC performer that
EVER WAS!
David lee has studied martial arts since he was a kid. He's mastered many styles and even worked with monks. Dude is the real deal👍
Panama is a great song! 👍🏼
I went to see Dave lee Roth in the early 2000s and he was still doing that stuff 👍
Diamond Dave was nuts. He was a karate guy when he was younger and an athlete but hes such an over the top showman. As he got older he got so insanely silly on stage you would think he thought he was in a broadway play. Nutty ass dude even just in his normal life. You watch interviews with him and no one would understand wtf he was talking about lol. Weird ass metaphors that only made sense to him constantly 😂
The 80's - Big hair and Spandex. Oh, and the fall of the Soviet Union.
That's why the Commies crumbled
And cocaine
@@docsavage8640 Nah ... they didnt crumble, they mutated and are now ruling "the West" in the guise of feminists, SJWs, BLM and even the globalists megacorporations are "doing the INTERNATIONALIST thing" which is a core part of communism (which has a "national" hymn called "The Internationale").
You have to do Sultans of Swing by Dire Straits! The studio version and the live alchemy one!
They plead when I did the great north run ( not because I did it,just a coincidence lol)
Love them!
Great guitar solo by Knopfler
Ugggh. That song sucks!
DLR is a master martial artist. He has a variety of belts in Kung Fu, Jeet Kune Do, Karate and even knows how to swing a sword.
..... I heard that he once sliced a guys nose with a spinning mic stand! 🥋
@@Squirrelconga I also think I heard that he broke his own nose doing one of those maneuvers.
Best concert i have ever seen back in the 80s Belfast Northern Ireland Dave Lee Roth total Athlete the guy never stopped for a breath all night absolutely amazing Double bill Heart and Van Halen a night i will never forget...
Jamel: "how do you have that much energy at the beginning?..." Pace yourself, bro, it goes up from there.
The greatest Van Halen lineup ever!
Haha. That explains it. George Lopez asked me to get him backstage for David Lee Roth concert. I was friends with his touring drummer. I was like, you are George Lopez, get your own ass backstage lol. But I got him backstage.
I've had a crush on David Lee Roth for 30years! He still is awesomely cool! Thank you Jamel...we enjoy your openness friend.✨🕊
I was 11 years old and this video WAS MTV. When I would spend the night at my buddy's house on Friday, we would wake up on Saturday, ride our bikes 9 blocks to the donut shop, ride back, eat and watch MTV for 3 or 4 hours. Then spend the rest of the day playing outside. The 80s were magical and I'm very thankful for being able to experience them.
