Fun Fact: The part where Eddie Van Halen is at the piano blowing smoke rings, that is Valerie Bertinelli sitting on the couch in the background. It was filmed in their living room.
Panama is one of the songs that I just crank the volume on and belt out every time it comes on the radio! There are many other bigger hits, but Panama remains one of my very favorites. Watching you two vibe to the music captures the feeling I have every time I hear it. Thanks so much for taking the time to react to this!!
There really weren't many songs from VH that were bigger than Panama! Jump would be the only one I can think of that was bigger since it went to #1, but this song was HUUUUGE and always on the radio. I know hardly anyone listens to terrestrial radio anymore, but if you turn on a classic rock station today, you will eventually hear Panama.
The car David Lee Roth drives in the video is from his own collection. It's a 1951 Mercury convertible (with four doors) christened the "California Girl." It later appeared in his video for "California Girls."
Fun story, so I was an Aircraft Loadmaster in the U.S.A.F. during the Panama Invasion. There were 100's of cargo planes flying in three formations (C-130's, C-141B's, and C-5A's). No one knew where we were actually going or where we were dropping, we just knew we were flying towards Texas. The Aircraft Commander (or Pilot) said he was told to turn the BBC radio on and play it through the comms. When he did a British Announcer says (para-phrasing here...been a minute) "This is for our friends across the pond heading south, good luck" then this song began to play.
Panama is the 8th biggest chart success for VH; 15 weeks on the charts and it peaked at 13. I'm with Peter C. below...Fair Warning, although without the chart success of other VH albums, is a killer and Mean Street is one of my fav. tunes period! Best to start with "Running with the Devil" on VH (self-titled) and hit every banger on this iconic album. Unchained Rocks!
I'm sure by now you've learned that this singer is David Lee Roth, and he was also the singer in Jump, Hot for Teacher, and Ain't talking about Love, but he was not the singer at the time the Eruption live video was filmed. He was doing his own thing at the time. You should check out his song "Yankee Rose" and cover of the Beach Boys' "California Girls". Also if you didn't know, Eddie Van Halen played the guitar solo in Michael Jackson's "Beat It".
David Lee Roth was such a Showman! He really Amplified Van Halen! They were a mega Rock act when they came on the scene!! So cool to be a teenager when these guys arrived! Completely changed the landscape of rock music for ever!!
As a rock guitarist all my life this is my favorite Van Halen song just because of the smokin' guitar in the breakdown. Such a great riff. I had the honor of seeing them at the 1978 Texas Jam 2 months after their 1st album debuted. Eddie's performance changed the way I saw guitar. BTW, they opened with "Runnin' With the Devil" and had us in the palm of their hand for the rest of their performance. RIP Eddie.

Rock music from the '70's and '80's and 'some 90's were from a different time and place during a lot of people my age. Rock On all the Hair Bands from the '70's, '80"s and some '90's!!! 🤘🤟✊🤙💥🔥
Aahhhh, the Eighties. Good music, with videos! Classic! Movies, cars, girls, concerts, technology, we had it all! What happened? How did I get here? This is not my beautiful house...this is not my beautiful wife!!!!
On the album, and also on the radio, there was no airplane at the beginning. It just went right into the song. There was no warning, there was no buildup. And I don't think that anyone, perhaps not even Van Halen themselves, understood how important this was to young guys at the time. Finally, we had a rock song that just went right into it. The first note was everything. Even guys who didn't particularly like Van Halen were talking about Panama.
1984 was the last album DLR recorded with the band before Eddie gave him his walking papers … Eddie Van Halen was very particular and it was mostly his way or the highway. Just to let you know
Went to the 84 tour concert and had a blast. The stage setup was a big giant T. The floor tickets were general admission and I ended up next to the stage on the right side where the T is formed. Had way too much to drink 😊
BY FAR my favorite VH song!!! Historically, imho, the 4th or 5th best song in the history of music, behind Canon in D, La Grange, Jesu, Foggy Mountain Breakdown, Symphony #5, maybe a few others, but you get the idea. Took me almost 3 years to learn it, and I still can't smash the solo.
David Lee Roth lived a year in Japan to learn how to use a katana. He lived there on his own, and I don't think it was that long ago. Maybe ten years ago? He talked to Joe Rogan about it. .o
The one thing u will find about live vs studio VH is that DLR is so good as a showman that he loses a little vocal quality in shows. Most hi energy singers do. But he keeps enough to be good, and he works a crowd like no other(except Freddie Mercury)
If you look closely, when they do the pan of the audience Weird Al Yankovic gets a close up. I can't remember if you've done any of his songs (parodies) yet, but you really need to. Some of Al's songs include, but are not limited to, Another one Rides the Bus (Another one Bites the Dust - Queen) Like a Surgeon (Like a Virgin - Madonna), Amish Paradise (Ganster Paradise - Coolio), but my personal favorite is Word Crimes (Blurred Lines - Robin Thicke).
Whenever they had to lip-sink on tv or videos they played their instruments in the wrong spots on the neck to let the fans who played know it’s not live. Kinda like an Easter egg.
I can remember when this first debuted on MTV, people were jonesing for it to come out almost as bad as people wanted Michael Jackson's Thriller video to come out( talk about hype)!
Check out Deep Purple’s song My Woman from Tokyo. I always thought Deep Purple, which was founded in 1968 and pretty much spearheaded early Heavy Metal, was a major influence on Van Halen’s signature sound.
You guys are ready for a deep track and best live performance ever as a band (at least for Sammy years) .. 5150 off the Live Without A Net concert ... if you don't like it .. I'll renew my passport, fly north, and both of you can personally beat the crap out of me! 😂
You should review the video of Eddie Van Halen playing this song “Panama” on the “David Letterman Show” with the house band. Paul Schafer mimics the David Lee Roth vocals on keyboards. It’s really good!!!
You probably should review each track from the Live Without A Net concert that had the Guitar solo you first reviewed. All Killer no filler- plus Bass solo and Drum solo.
The ultimate party band. They're the garage band that enjoy playing music and having a good time, except that they got big and play to arena's and stadium's full of people instead of backyards.
I had no idea that "Panama" was the name of David Lee Roth's car until you said it here. Crazy what you learn. I've known this song for a long time, too. .o
