That's actually pretty neat for a gas fireplace. I like the simplicity.

That style of fireplace would look great with some orange shag carpet, a pea soup green sofa, striped metallic wallpaper, and a couple of beanbag chairs.

These are popular in luxurious places in Aus. I think they'll look date in a couple of years.

Looks like it's going to fall on the floor with those flimsy brackets. I also take issue with the fact that they're using the same size flue for gas and wood.

I paid about $200 for a gas log kit and about another $100 for all the piping to convert my fireplace. I can only imagine what it would cost to have something like this installed.

More for style, not much efficiency, ton of heat goes right up and out the uninsulated pipe.

John P, you are correct. The gas and electric utilities love these fireplaces. The heat goes up the flu in the winter time and in the summer time with that damper locked open the heat gets sucked right into the house. No glass doors when the unit is not in use ,another big plus for the utility companies. I'm not sure what This Old House was thinking when they produced this video. I was in the gas utility industry for over 35 years & this technology was old when I started in the business.

It's more of an aesthetic feature than a utility.
But uninsulated pipe is going to let heat back into the house. The exhaust fumes are hotter than the room temp. The reason they're not insulated is because you don't need to worry about creosote build up and thus you could need to keep the heat going up the pipe (as much).

    • @MrItsthething
      @MrItsthething 4 роки тому +6

False. Uninsulated pipe will get more heat into the house. This is better than most fireplaces since the heat transfer area into the house is massive.

@@Xelbiuj when a hot pipe meets the freezing air outside you'll have creosote no? This is is why you can find yt vids of aircrete insulated exhaust pipes for stoves

It is not about insulation of the pipe exterior, but that straight shaft to out.
If you want to have heating working, you would need to have a heat elements inside the shaft, and the heated air to go around the shaft, so most of the heat would be collected and stored to the fireplace before it gets ventilated out.
Cocklestoves are thats why best for heating, but takes little more space, are heavier, but you can't make them as pretty as these American traditional fireplaces.
British and Americans don't really do good fireplaces like Europeans in colder climate does. Where with one batch burning you heat the room for few days.
And in summer times you can open direct shaft that bypass reserves and all heat goes out.
Traveling through USA, UK and India (and many countries in Africa that were under Britain) and you can see these awful fireplaces all over... Straight chimney to out, no insulation to compensate with external temperature etc. It is like everything designed for Santa Claus to get through the chimney....
      Happy Christmas 2019...

Hope there's some kind of screen or something to keep the cats out, they'd just love to crawl into it and someday the home owner will forget and fire it up with their pet inside.

It is "beautiful and modern" because it is French design? I am trying to gauge the psychological effect of the word French. To me, I will pass at my first glance because the real modern/current gas fireplace in almost every US's house looks and functions much better.

Gerard Comeau I agree.. Burning real wood beings a lot of enjoyable details. The smell, putting more on it, the sounds, starting it up, seeing the glowing coal afterwards. Gas is just boring, though easy.

I never understood the appeal of a gas fireplace, maybe a gas furnace or boiler. I like wood fireplaces, for many reasons; STHF survive being at the top, romantic reasons following.

That thing is ugly. What's wrong with a brick fireplace? Sometimes the original things are the best things to have. This modern stuff is ugly and maybe hard to clean or repair down the line. Still with original.
