Complete restoration of a Firehood brand - mid century modern fireplace from start to finish. With some challenges along the way.
This is the ONE AND ONLY vid I found on yt that shows a restore on one of these vintage fireplaces. At least that I found so that great
I could not find any either when I was getting ready to start. That being said, not a whole lot of these great fireplaces left. Saved this one just in time from someone's backyard. Thanks for taking the time to leave the great feedback, very much appreciated.
you’re such a good papa :) i just bought myself the same one!! It’s an olive (very 70s) green. The pipes are a little too tall for my space so I was happy to see the new pipes you used for your daughters! I’ll be doing the same to get shorter ones and have them powder coated to match :)
Great job 👏🏼
She was very pleased... and once it was done it was worth all the work. Thanks Courtney for the feedback, I greatly appreciate it.
Hey Chris, love these type of projects bringing stuff back to life. You did a great job buddy.
Dean always good to hear from you. I procrastinated on that project for far too long. Thing I finally wrapped it up because I needed the room. A year ago I bought a 1950's fridge for the 'barn' and I told myself I wasn't permitted to put it in the kitchen until I finished the restoration.... and I really want a fridge. So hopefully will start that up here soon. Similar scope, rust dents and scratches to be addressed, sand, prime, paint, clear coat. I have already done in the inside.
Well, this turned out awesome great job. I am super impressed!
Why thank you CCC! Very much appreciation. BTW, really like how your machinist tool chest turned out. Especially of all things the leather wrapped handles!!

Impressive... I think I just might have sent that one to the scrap yard. Nice save... I think you need to do an Electrolysis Tank build video. If you plan to do one give me a call. I have lots of suggestions. I have been using mine to clean cast iron pans for several years.
Will certainly hit you up, that is something I have been wanting to try.
Nice job, you are a good man!
As long as the ladies of the family are happy, I’m in good shape. Thanks for the comment, very much appreciated!
Good job Bob
Well done! Love that colour
Thank you!
A painting tent is sooooo smart
Thanks Jen. Does take up space, but good if you have room 👍
I am surprised I've never seen one or thought of that. Seems almost like duh once you see it :)
I have this fireplace. I love everything about it. Bought mine as a rust bucket and restored it…. Not as extravagant as you have but many coats of high heat engine block paint is what I used.
Now I’m working on designing a piece of sheet metal for the screen to slow the fire down.
As you probably know, the stove burns hot but burns wood like no other.
Any recommendations of what kind of sheet metal to use for the screen?
Be appropriated:)
Roxanne, if you are looking to fashion something that is more freestanding that can be set in there I would lean towards something like the following and have someone weld up a simple frame with handle. www.amazon.com/SOSCo-Metals-Expanded-Metal-Flattened/dp/B08SSXSQYB/ref=asc_df_B08SSXSQYB/?hvqmt=&hvpos=&hvpone=&hvlocphy=9014169&hvptwo=&psc=1&hvadid=475805673032&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvtargid=pla-1198579080468&hvlocint=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=8966920050084868171&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=ur2&tag=iphone0dce-20&linkId=OMBRYAX56M45VB35
And thank you very much for the feedback and question.

Thank you so much for your quick response.
I actually have the original screen for the malm fireplace. What I’m trying to design is a sheet metal piece to hook onto the screen , when I need to slow the fire as a door.
Not sure what kind of metal sheeting would stand the heat. Also , would creating an enclosure mess with the design of the operation of the stove?
Can’t send pictures here unfortunately:(
My email address is provided on my channel page if you would like to send photos.
What kind of lunatic would take a project like this on? (Taking notes for mine) thank you so much
May I ask where you found the pipes? I bought this same type of fireplace, but the seller didn’t have any pipes to go with it
I actually do not remember... I did not have trouble finding it though. I'll have to check the diameter to see if I can find it again. It is galvanized, single layer, came flat and there is a seam that overlaps to put it together. I'll try and remember to check the dimensions when I'm back out the farm this weekend.
Nice job
Thanks Bobby! Good practice, up next 1950's refrigerator
Sir, my condolences on the paint choice. All we can do is try our best to raise our children right. Sometimes they will make poor choices and we still have to love them. Im sure she's a good kid otherwise. Try to be supportive. 😊
These have to be my favorite comments so far this year. Thanks so much for the chuckle. She is a good kid, otherwise I would have passed on this one. The paint is a great color but dang it was expensive. Hope your painting experience on your fireplace goes as well as my second attempt ;). If you have not already, give the channel a Subscribe, who knows, I may end up doing something else stupid. You may enjoy the Corn Sheller Restoration videos, that was stupid. Ended up paying a fortune for some real good oak LOL.
Thanks for sharing a great looking job. Any problems or tricks to disassemble the fireplace parts? I have one to remove from a neighbors home that will be demoed in a few days.
Any problems... yes! The one my daughter picked up was kept and used outdoors and every bolt was rusted solid (nuts to bolts). I ended up drilling out or breaking off every fastener and replaced them with stainless ones. Also had to use JBWeld to 'rebuild' the holes as some of them rusted to larger than original diameter. Filled with JB Weld, sanded, drilled new holes. You intend on re-furbishing it?
@@TryNewThings My project is coming from indoor location so I hope rust will not be a big problem. Haven’t had much time to inspect. Wondering how the sections come apart? Roof section may be much rustier.
pipe sections should just be slip fit one over the other, the hood bolted to the firewood tray with I think about 8 bolts fed in from the outside with nuts on the inside. The stand we had that was all bent out of shape in our case wasn't bolted to the firewood tray, the stove just 'sat' on top of it.
Thanks for posting this video. Can any general contractor install this or is it worth contacting a specialist?
We set ours up for "artistic purposes only". Meaning our pipe does not exit through the ceiling (electric fire logs only). If I were to set this up to be used as a real fireplace I would be looking for a contractor with wood stove / pellet stove installation experience.
Hey great job i just purchased a mid century modern fireplace myself that I'm going to restore. I had a few questions. Is this paint heat resistant? And what kind of paint did you use?
The black paint is heat resistant… however, the 1972 Datsun avocado green metallic that my daughter picked out is not. She bought the fireplace with no intention of it being more than a display piece. Likely tougher to get a good variety of heat paint outside red, orange, blue engine paints etc. congrats on your purchase, did you happen to get one with a screen? We are missing the screen on ours.
@@TryNewThings oh ok got it.. i want to paint mines gold there's a company that is quoting me to do a ceramic high temp coating if it's not too much i will go ahead with it... yes i got mines with the screen for 850 bucks mint condition.
Hey if the original paint has some rust bleeding - not rust like eating thru the metal, more like bleeding on the ceramic (?) paint from the above rusted joints of where the connection, wondering if there is a way to clean up those rust type markings on the paint without having to RE paint the whole thing
I'd be worried about using a product that is too aggressive and ends up taking off more than just the rust bleeding... I will see what I can find.
I would look at videos showing how to remove rust stains from enamel bath tubs. Should work the same on the fireplace.
@@TryNewThings thanks your awesome ! Appreciate
where did you get the pipes and paint?
The pipes I found online. Standard fireplace or wood stove pipe. The paint was a specialty order from vehicle paint supply based on the color my daughter wanted. www.automotivetouchup.com/touch-up-paint/datsun/1972/all-models/
Thank you!!!@@TryNewThings
If you dont mind me asking how much was the original piece? I found one i really like and love this video
Hello David, I believe my daughter paid $300-$350 for it as you saw it at the beginning of the video. I don’t know what what they are worth in good shape, but I know they are not cheap. Glad you liked the video ☺️
Wow nice Chris what did she pay for it before you got it? I used to have 2 of these could kick myself for losing them Carole Matthews South Fla bougt a Lloyd gel cone one this time new for $700 sposed to take 10 min to assemble thanks Chris Terra Flame has but they sell out super fast free shipping
I’m fairly certain she paid $400 even in it’s rusted state. We also drove for hours to pick it up.
Well done! What’s the heat source?
Just an art piece for my daughter, not plumbed to outside so just a no-heat electric fire log. TNT #96: Madison's Pleasant Hearth 20” Electric Log Review
