    One day I was trying to repot them, and I left them in direct sunlight for too long (about 3 hours), and the leaves went all soggy and I thought that was it, but they recovered after a couple of days. Lesson learnt.

    Thank you for addressing dormancy, especially so early on! 👍I bought one of these on a whim last month and watched a couple of care videos, none mentioned dormancy and I've been wondering why mine is dropping leaves! Only found out last week these can go dormant on a fb group, where many others had thrown their plants out after losing leaves. 😪

    Hi! I have an alocasia polly that I've recently repotted, and I'm sad to say that she's no longer doing so great. All foliage was green prior to repotting, but since repotting, several leaves have experienced browning/yellowing around the edges. I thought that this might be a symptom of root rot at first, so I ended up removing it from the pot once again and examining the roots. (I believe that at least a solid month passed between this and the initial repotting.) I removed all the soil. To my surprise, the roots looked entirely healthy. I divided the plant during this process as well because I wanted to have another plant incase this one didn't make it. This was about 3 weeks ago.
    The plant hasn't looked any better since, and in my panic and frustration, yesterday, I repotted my plant once again into a slightly larger pot. It was extremely root bound (wrapped around the outside of the soil several times over) so I thought that maybe I'd finally found the solution to the problem. It has now occurred to me, though, that what the plant might really be experiencing is transplant shock. The roots were tampered with quite a bit, especially when I divided the plant. I feel very bad about the ordeal, as I've realized that in my efforts to help my alocasia, I have probably hurt it.
    Anyways, do you have any recommendations for helping alocasia recover from transplant shock/root damage? Do you think that my plant might still recover? Sorry for such a lengthy post. Thank you!

    • @GoodGrowing
      @GoodGrowing  4 роки тому +4

      Oh no! I think you may be right in saying it's transplant shock. Especially if the roots looked fine and not rotten. Repotting can be stressful for many plants and it can cause them to wilt, lose leaves, etc. When that occurs, it's most important to give them the correct care and have patience. They should bounce back in time. Alocasias can be drama queens for sure! Mine lost all but one leaft after it got a couple of thrips (not even a bad case). But with the right care and time (3-4 months) it has bounced back and grew 2 new leaves! So just give them a chance to chill and recover and hopefully they'll return to full health soon!

    • @anniemahan2355
      @anniemahan2355 4 роки тому +1

      @@GoodGrowing thank you so much for the reply! That's all very comforting to hear 😊 I'd read that they're pretty good at bouncing back, but it's always better to hear from someone who has had direct experience with alocasias! I'm feeling pretty confident that mine is going to make it now. Thank you again!!

    • @kenheltzel3440
      @kenheltzel3440 4 роки тому +1

      The exact same thing just happened to me Annie. Within three days of re-potting, the edges on some of the leaves turned yellow. Along with the possibility of transplant shock, part of the problem is that the soil I used may be retaining too much moisture. I hope I can adjust properly to have it bounce back. I just subscribed to this page for plant help and a little levity, Emma has a great sense of humor. Good luck with your plant.

    I have never been a plant person. I always accidentally end up killing them. This year though something have changed. All greenery seems to love me and my studio apartment. I have a small jungle here now. Fell in love with the Alocasia at the store and bought one. Actually I do nothing of what you teach in this video. Still it grow and thrive beautifully. It even self-propagate (is that a word) and I have new fresh leaves every two weeks. I’m very grateful for your tips though. I might need it in the feature.

    I’m losing loads of leaves, I’m about to lose my 4th large leaf and it’s summer. I took it out of a too small decorative pot as there was loads of moisture between the pots and no air to circulate. I left it to dry at the bottom as it had been sitting in water for a few days without my realising. I’ve found a suitable decorative pot that it fits in properly now but I’ve noticed another leaf is going yellow again. I last watered it a few days ago and added baby bio food. It’s in a very bright room with non direct sun.
    Do you think it’s root rot or does it need more humidity?

    My alocasia Nebula is being weird! 😭 I can't find answer anywhere as to what is happening to it. --- I got it off the rescue shelf about a month ago. It was looking sad. At that point I didn't know about Alocasia cycle thing, and good that I didn't, cause I checked the roots, and there were not looking good. It also had a ball of really dense soil stuck at the base of the root (probably as the result of the netting they often come with). I freed it up. trimmed the roots a bit, repotted it and placed it into little green house with high huidity and warmth. In this time the plant dropped 3 out of for leaves (by this time I learned it is likely to be normal) it now has one leaf and , heeeey! new on coming! And though the clear pot it is now in, I can see a lovely bunch of short nice looking roots! BUT! Yesterday I glanced at the bottom of my clear pot, and noticed that all the long roots it originally had are all mushy and horrible! 😰. So I took it out of the soil.. yeah.. all te original roots has rotted away. and the base of the main root was mushy... I've taken this all off and amputated the rotten bit off too... But I just don't get : How come it's thriving and giving me new lovely little roots and a leaf, yet it's rotting?! 😳😱 I guess I better to keep a close look at the main root, but what about the repotting shock etc if I have to do this often 😭... I don't understand what's going on... Please someone help

    If the amazonica and polly’s are different bcs the polly is smaller, than it’s not an amazonica polly. It is either a alocasia amazonica OR an alocasia polly.

    Do they go dormant every winter? I'm planning to have one but I'm worried once I take it home they'll start to dormant because it's winter.
    I do have grow light and humidifier for my other plants. Would that help for my alocasia polly not to go dormant?

    • @GoodGrowing
      @GoodGrowing  4 роки тому +1

      They don't always go dormant no. I've had mine for a few winters now and it's never gone dormant. It really depends on the conditions of your home. It sounds like you have decent conditions with the grow light and humidifier so I'd say it's less likely to go dormant. That being said it's not impossible and even if it does, it will grow again in spring so it's not the end of the world.
      Do expect some leaf loss after bringing one home though. The move is a bit of a shock so leaf loss of smaller, older leaves is fairly normal. Good luck!

    • @GoodGrowing
      @GoodGrowing  2 роки тому

      hmmm it's tough to say without seeing the plant. If you fancy sending pictures my way over on IG, I may be able to better help. Otherwise, to me it sounds like stem rot? Are the stems mushy and that's why it's fallen over, or just too thin and can't support the leaf?

    HELP! I recently got an Alocasia Polly division and it was bare root. I potted it up but I think the stress is making the bottom leaves turn yellow. What can I do to help it before they all turn yellow and it dies? It only has 4 leaves and the bottom 2 are turning yellow.

    • @GoodGrowing
      @GoodGrowing  4 роки тому +2

      The stress of that move is probably what's causing that yellowing. This is fairly normal for a new plant. When I brought mine home from the shop, it lost 3-4 small bottom leaves too. Keep giving it the proper care and it will adjust. If leaves continue to die off, it's probably going into dormancy which I address a the start of this video :) good luck!

    I see a lot of these plants left in a plastic pot then placed in a decorative planter. Is this better for drainage versus a pot with drainage holes and attached saucer? I just got my first alocasia Polly and want to do right by her!

    • @GoodGrowing
      @GoodGrowing  4 роки тому

      Either of those options would be fine. I like to leave mine in the plastic nursery pots and put that in a decorative pot with no hole. Then, when I water, I don't need to worry about it overflowing the saucer. And I can pour out any excess easily still. But it doesn't really matter as long as it has drainage of some sort. Best of luck! :)

    Hello, thanks for the information. I have a question, i JUST bought this plant a few hours ago and i had the plant in the car for about an hour and it’s HOT outside. The leaves turned soft and they’re droopy. Does that mean this plant is done with or that the leaves won’t come back up? I feel bad that it was sitting in the sun. I hope you could help me. Thank you so much ☺️☺️

    • @GoodGrowing
      @GoodGrowing  4 роки тому +1

      Oh no, that doesn't sound good! The leaves may be able to recover from being soft and floppy in time. Being in the hot car was probably too much for the little guy and so I'd say give him some time to let him settle. If it doesn't perk up in the next few days it may be a bigger issue.. Sorry I could't help more but I'm not sure if or how it will bounce back. Best of luck!
