I live in Hawai'i so, most of the time it's normally 80-95 all year round and very humid. Will a Alocasia Amazonica survive? Yes? Got it. Buying one tomorrow then. Lol!! That foliage is too stunning to pass up and I think it'll be happy in my East facing window as the sun rises. Great tips! I approve 🤗🌱💚👏
I’m in Hawaii too and you know how almost everything grows? My first Alocasia died and I can’t figure out what happened. Number two is alive but dropping leaves. Good luck with yours-they are beautiful!
Hi, thank you for sharing. I have one of the same. When I bought it one leaf was opening and it sent out a new leaf from that same one. The new leaf grew taller, but the two of them never opened up all the way at the tip. Di you have any idea why? I have it about 2 months, maybe early July 2023.
I’d like to ask you when you say a humidifier is great for this plant - how many times a week should I use the humidifier around this plant or in fact generally on humid loving plants??🙏🏻🤞
Hey, I hope you are getting ad money for your mention of Biotone, as I had not heard about it before you talking about transplanting, and I paused your video to check out Biotone. I was impressed and sent myself an email to check it out tomorrow. Great video, very informative!
Enjoyed this video! I killed one a few years back when I had a black thumb, but since I'm doing much better, I decided to pick up one of these guys yesterday.🤞
Very informative video. The Alocasia is pronounced Alo-kay-sia Not Kah-sia. Pronounce the a like in the alphabet. We all mis pronounce names when it is a new word or plant to us. Just in case you didn't know. It is super typical for any plant to do well in winter with grow lights and proper care, even for the Alocasia Polly. My plants double in size over winter with grow lights 24/7
I have mine for about 5 to 6 weeks now headed in a south facing window and now it is about 10 feet from that window on top of my wall unit with artificial lighting and it is doing very well . I did lose a baby leave but found that it needs a lot more water when it’s putting out growth
Hey Jeff! There is an even redder stem version I forgot the cultivar, and greener, wider leaves. So it kinda grows similar to any other alocasia grown as a houseplant, but smaller? I literally had one of those in my cart at Lowe’s a few months ago; I ended up getting clearance spring bulbs...
question, now that you've had this plant for awhile, can you talk about pests? I heard so many people complain that this plant is spider mites magnet. is it true? can we do anything to prevent that from happening ?
Checking this out Jeff because even in the Tropic it's a finicky butt head🤣. Mine was actually about 3 and a half feet tall and then went dormant. It's chucking out leaves again and I plan to follow yor advice. Thanks!!
Good video, I could not find a lot about this plant on youtube. . what causes orangey yellow spots in the center of the leaves. similar to the spot on the leaf you took off of yours? and what causes some of the leaves to curl to the side? thanks again for this great and informative video.
Hi Amalia! The curling is natural to their growth habit as the plants mature. The spotting can be for several reasons, in the case with mine I think it was old foliage that was dying off. Other possibilities are things like nutrient deficiencies, stress from being over-watered in the past, fungus, insects, lighting being too strong... there are a lot of reasons they can get spotty. As long as the spots are not on the majority of the leaves, I wouldn't be too concerned about it, and can always just trim unsightly foliage off to be safe as well. :)
@@TropicalPlantParty I have them in full sun or pretty close to full sun but they haven't been out in the summer yet. I don't know if they'll make it when it gets that hot.
If you live in an area where there is not a lot of humidity should you get a humidifier for it? I have a small plant like this and i saw another video that said she uses a humidfier since the temp was not ideal for the plant.
Hey Lisbeth! They do respond well to humidity and a humidifier is a good way to help with dry air. Keeping them nestled up with other houseplants also works well.
I just got one thnx for the tips its leaves are curling what does that mean and I kinda sprayed it with the other plants before I have grow plant lights in my room and it's very hot in here 80 and up its a tropical rainforest in my room lol and I have a mister just need the tips so my plant baby doesn't die thnx Dee ❤️
Such a beautiful plant and a funny owner! Do you have any advice regarding Alocasia Zebrina plants? I had a baby plant which I purchased and kept in the original pot but the leaves dropped and the stem became soggy. The roots were also wet and weak and fell away when I dug out the bulb. So I have a bulb which I cleaned and kept in water and it grew a couple of very little bulby bits. I want to pot it to see if it grows but I have no idea what kind of potting mix to use and whether it’s worth potting. The bulb isn’t soggy. It’s firm and looks bright in colour and healthy. Help? :)
I have this one and its being a huge ass to me. I have a suspicion that I already bought a damaged plant since it had a huge discount and black/yellow spots on leaves
What kind of elephant ear plants can be kept with submerged roots? I see them in bog filters and shallow ponds but I've heard mixed thing about what kind of care they need.
Hi! I love this plant but the 2 times I purchase one did die also the 2nd one 😣 they start turning yellowish and brown and die!! What I did wrong? ?😦I do great with others, but not this one😞 Your look beautiful I love it 😍
This particular alocasia is very fussy indoors, and even outdoors depending on the climate. Yellowing foliage is often a sign of the roots being wet for too long. If they are in normal household temps they don't need to be watered very often, less is more. I try to water mine at first sign of drooping foliage (which is normally later than i like for most houseplants) and I only give it a heavy enough watering to get see the water move out of the bottom of the pot for a few seconds. Basically I try to avoid soaking and drenching the roots when temps are in the 70sF and below.
omg me too Sherry! Only the start of january and im ready to get back outside! Though it is 60 degrees today, but everything is dormant and blah outside!
Normal house temps of 68-72? Oh my that is cold. No, no. 74 minimum, 80 most of the time.😉 They don't grow particularly well in South Florida outdoors, either, unless they're in a rather shady location and in a raised bed or on a slight slope (so water drains away from the plant, otherwise they rot in the summer), they seem to do better as house plants here.
Michael I am glad I read your post because I have my Alocashio outdoors (live in SW Florida) but I bought the plant about 2 months ago. If the summer is too much for it outdoor then I may need to rethink it's location. Thanks 👍👍👍👍.
if it looks like the one in the video it is probably the same. The name, 'African Mask' is used on a few alocasias hazardously but the other type has more green foliage and the leaves are held more upright in a more typical Alocasia fashion.

Though my Alocasia isn’t doing the best.. there were a few kind of rips on the edges (Idk why it happened) and the lowest leaves are turning yellow. I dont know what to do ;w;. It’s been around the 90’s for weather here in California (gosh darnit) Any idea on what’s going on and how I can help? I also saw a few spider mites and sprayed it with some soapy water. If it looks fine then it's not dying. They do tend to sit still during the fall and winter months when the day lengths are shorter. If the leaves look healthy, I wouldn't worry about it. 😊
My Amazonica was doing well and I've just noticed that some of the leaves are turning yellow. Would it help if I remove the soil and replace with fresh dry soil since you indicated that's a symptom of overwatering? Also, my leaves were all sitting flat at the top of the stems, one of them has begun to curl, what does that mean?
If the soil is taking a long time to dry out, more than a few days, than It might be a good idea to repot the plant into something that dries more quickly. Regular potting mix with some added orchid bark, charcoal, perlite (any combo of those) will help create a more airy soil that dries a little faster. If the leaves that are yellowing are the smallest leaves/oldest leaves then it can also just be the plant letting go of old growth. Is the curling happening on the newest growth or did it happen to a leaf that was once flat and is changing? Usually the smaller leaves are flat and the larger leaves (newest leaves) have a slight curl and ruffled appearance to the outer edges of the foliage.
@@TropicalPlantParty Awesome advice. I appreciate it. I had two leaves to turn yellow, one mature and one new. Also, it's a mature, the biggest leaf, that is curling.
LOL! Anytime I've lost one it has been from over-watering. Just don't constantly soak the plant and give it a bright room, should be fine! ... and if it does die then that is ok, it is part of the learning process. :)
Don't laugh I've seen plan on plant violence in person I've seen one plant eat another plant and my alocasia Polly or two of my are almost 3 ft tall I think by next year I'll hit the three foot mark I do have 17 polys however

can I cut off all the leaves? will it die or grow back? I recently purchased because i love it soo much but what i didn't pay attention too was the leaves were not flat and I don't like the way it looks. Thanks!
Hi! I wouldn't recommend cutting of all the leaves of any plant, but this is particularly so with Alocasias! New leaves sprout from the stem of the newest, so if you cut that one of, the whole plant will die. If you have dead or crispy leaves, try cutting them off one at a time as new leaves sprout, and try to increase the humidity around it to avoid leaf burning. In any case, don't feel bad if it doesn't survive -like he said, this plants can be jerks! :)
