Saw this plant today. Immediately fell in love with it and I brought it home. The price was scary and so was the thought of it dying off in my care. I'm so glad to have found your video which I will follow the best that I can to make sure that it grows.
I actually saw one of these in my local grocery store as part of a 'bundle basket' and have been hardcore STALKING it. The plant looked pretty damaged, and thankfully I was able to talk the nice lady behind the counter into separating it from the basket so I can try to save it. She might be kinda rough looking for now but I love her SO MUCH and the lady marked it down to seven heckin dollars! Beautiful work on yours holy molyu 🤩
I just bought this beauty today, an absolute stunning plant. It made me sooooo happy. The velvety texture and thickness of this plant is like no other.
How is she doing now? I just bought my 1st Alocasia 2 weeks ago, and fell in love. I just found a Silver Dragon and a Black Ninja today and had to bring them home with me.
The black velvet is by far my easiest Alocasia I have!! She's gorgeous, has only lost 1 leaf over the whole winter (she has 6 with a 7th on the way right now), and gave me 2 tiny corms, that both grew succsessfully!! One of the corms already got it's 3rd leaf and sized up a LOT. The newest leaf is already 8cm long and is still hardening off!! The other corm has 2 itty bitty leaves! I had my big momma black velvet in a terracotta pot with a very light coco coir and perlite mix, that dried out a loooot, and it never minded. I did recently transfer it to pon in a selfwatering pot (although I am not that big of a pon fan, I just used it cuz I was out of leca and it came with the pot), because I did notice it was slowing down with the growth a bit. And cuz it's going into summer now, the soil would dry out way too fast and I didn't want it to suffer, when I do enter one of my depressive episodes again. In conclusion: I love this plant. It tickles my (lowkey goth) brain just right.
Your Alocasia propagation video was the one that helped me! I did the shallow puddle method and am happy to report that 2/4 are currently putting out tiny roots! They are Alocasia Polly and black velvet corms and I can’t wait for them to grow into their own little plant. Thank you for the great video
I have my black velvet living in its original pot and soil in the shower on a ledge. It's right against the privacy window and gets direct sun all day at the moment, but the cloudy/splotchy privacy window filters it a lot. It's winter in Australia right now and mine is growing new leaves, which surprised me. I noticed it started to cannibalise its oldest leaf for nutrients so I gave it some fertiliser despite the season, and then the new leaf started showing itself. I have some leaves that are as big as 3 of my hands stacked up together and the one currently unfurling looks to be even bigger than the last so I'm excited to see it unfurled!
You are very knowledgeable and explained things clearly and concisely. After watching far too many questionable plant videos on youtube, this is a breath of fresh air. Subscribed!
I live in a really humid area (it's usually in the 70s or 80s) and just got my first alocasia black velvet! I'm a little bit afraid to kill it with too much watering though lol I'm keeping it in a clay pot which helps retain humidity so when I water it I also water the pot itself and fingers crossed that'll work fine
This is one of my favorite plants! It’s my only Alocasia and I keep it on a shelf with a lot of other plants around it (to help with humidity), under grow lights. I water him once a week and he usually has three leaves, sometimes four if I’m lucky, lol. Thank you for sharing! 💜💚🪴🌵
Thanks so much for all the info. I bought mine about a year ago. It did fine under grow lights during the winter, but starting in late spring began losing its leaves. It's now just a big bulb with one leaf starting to grow out the top and littles coming off the sides...and we're heading into winter! Seems like it has its seasons all backwards. I'm anxious to see what it does over the winter. 🤷♀️ I'm in Central Texas.
Just rescued one of these from a DIY store, it was looking soooooo sad. Hopefully on the mend now 🤞 Also harvested a couple of bulbs and trying the 'puddle' method...will let you know how it goes.
Mine just flowered, which honestly, I could live without. I’m here for the leaves. It’s only got 2 at the moment. When I transferred it the Pon, it got a bit cross with me & dropped a couple leaves. Then it seemed to get really happy & put out a huge leaf and then flowered. I hope it gets back to making big gorgeous leaves for me soon 🤞🏻
I honestly cut off any flowers that emerge before they bloom. I find they take up more energy from the plant than they're worth. Glad yours is doing well in pon though!
So pleased to be able to watch your video. I'm in Hamilton, NZ and bought my black velvet some time ago. Ive put it in my hothouse and its getting a new leaf!! I will repot it in Pon in the weekend. Your plant looks amazing 👏
I recently chopped off my 2 last leaves and sat it outside, I just couldn't find the perfect place for it and it got leggy asf. Im praying it comes back because that is my favorite alocasia.
Very nice video, I'd say it has exactly all the basic information that is important! If I've had this half a year ago, maybe my Alocasia would have had an easier time 😶 I've had my Alocasia Black Velvet since November, and well I have to say that it doesn't look as nice as yours, but at least I feel like I've figured out how to take care of it now. At first, I really struggled to figure out how much it wants to be watered. Somehow that was a lot easier for me with my Alocasia Amazonica, probably because it's in a smaller pot. In the beginning I seemingly didn't water it enough (I tend to underwater) but when I watered it more, it didn't dry out fast enough, probably because it's pot it came in was way too big regarding the ratio of roots to soil. Since I put it in a smaller and clear pot it's been a lot easier. I can see now when I need to water and and only bottom water it (and it's my only plant where I do it like that, most of them get a mix or are only top watered). Also when repotting it, I broke one of the corms off, and I managed to successfuly grow it. It's in Pon under a humidity dome, but has unfurled it's first leaf last week and is such a cute baby plant. I'm also planning to keep it in Pon, hoping that it will be easier regarding the right amount of water. The only "issue" I still have with the mother plant is, that all its (only three) leaves have pretty different shapes, one looking like it didn't fully developed, stuck at a smaller and curved in shape, but it unfurled when I first got the plant, so I'd guess it was the change of environment? The newest leaf on the other hand looks really elongated, but it hasn't hardend yet. But it has some weird specks on it, that I can't really tell what they are from (I'm only pretty sure it's not pests) that only remind me of one's that I've seen on Philodendron Micans before :/
sounds like you're really getting the hang of it now! It does take a bit of trial and error but I think you've gotten past that stage! Amazing that you were able to grow a baby it's soooo rewarding isn't it! It sounds like the issue you had with the funky leaf was because of the change in environment, sometimes alocasias can be sensitive to that and react poorly. Also I've noticed my leaves grow in a bit slimmer and round out as they harden so that may happen to your new leaf too! Good luck and enjoy your beautiful black velvet!
I have a 40 gallon Exoterra, previously home for a leopard gecko, and I am working on making it a little humid box for my house plants, I hope my alocacia appreciates it!
I've had such bad luck with pon and alocasias for some reason! My black velvet was doing great until I transferred her to pon and now she's not a happy bunny at all. Thanks for the vid Emma - my one needs it right now 😬💚
how odd! maybe it's unhappy in the transition. I've found mine grow best in pon if they start small and I can grow them bigger. If they come big, the transition is much more difficult! Hopefully she'll get used to it and start giving you big happy leaves soon!
My black velvet is down to one leaf, was away for 2 weeks, had a friend supposedly water my plants, got back and it was like a desert, she's not a happy camper at the moment, will be finding a better/more humid spot which will hopefully bring her back.
Is it safe to use Neem oil on the leaves if you suspect black spot? I have a small Black Velvet Alocasia and one of the leaves has 2-3 small brown-black dot w/ yellow halo around it near the edge. I've been monitoring and so far the whole leaf/stem seem to be healthy, no other leaf has this. Thanks
OK I have a silver dragon alocasia, I bottom water all my plants so I water every 2wks let it sit in water for 20 miks to let it soak up then move it to a catch pot with a piece of Styrofoam at the bottom so if it happens to drain its just not sitting in water. How does that sound to you he seems pretty happy
I went through the "one in one out" first. Now it's now growing and only has 2 leaves. Then, in its sad state, it grew a flower! I NEED MORE LEAVES! So I cut the flower off. I'm STRESSED lol.

sounds like you have perfect spots for them! Yes watering is the same in bark, though it might end up being slightly more frequent as bark doesn't hold as much liquid as coco coir would
I just got one of these and I live in a Finland 🇫🇮 where sun is basically nonexistent during fall/winter. Do you suggest grow lights? I’m so new to this and don’t want my plant to die . 😆🥺
Yeah I'd personally get grow lights if I were you. Ideally LED ones as they're much more energy efficient so will cost less to run and are better for the environment :)

hi!! can the black velvet alocasia be grown in just water? i'm terrible with watering schedules and knowing when soil is moist/dry enough, so i've been trying to keep as many of my plants as i can in just water since they're a little easier for me to maintain that way 😅 do you think this is something i can do for my black velvet too?
It provides a good environement for them (especially propagations) and also protects some of my most important plants from the cat. Also I like the way it looks so 🤷🏻♀️
The biggest head explosion emoji is that EVeRYTHING ABOUT evert plant, animal and fungus.. bacteria etc is ALL there or not there because of evolution.. from the length of the stem, to the colour of a flower, to specific behaviours of an animal all the way through to the presence of cilia or flagella on singled celled organisms is all there because organisms moving toward that trait were favoured. I’ve had a black velvet for a week now and noticed that it has a yellow, powdery substance in the middle of some of the leaves over where the stem holds the leaf. It looks like pollen. The plant is healthy, no browning or curling. I wiped the leaves on top and bottom. The bottom side had whitish looking “spots” ( for lack of a better word), which wiped right off. Is this spider mites, mealy bugs, I can’t find any pictures that resemble what I have. Thanks!
A yellow powdery substance doesn’t sound pesty to me. Sounds like you’ve done the right thing. Keep an eye on the plant and keep it isolated from any others and hopefully nothing comes back. If it does then it’s probably pests or a bigger issue 🤷🏻♀️
Hiiii, please would you help me? Is it possible to spray the leaves of alocasia black velvet from a sprayer? I can't maintain high humidity in any other way:(((((
Really enjoy your videos and we have many of the same plants! I always assumed you were American and I live in the uk too so now I feel like a div 😂 have you ever washed your black velvets leaves? Mine is rather dusty but don't want to upset it as my african violets hate their leaves getting wet and get brown spots if i drip water on them!
I am American, but also half British and living in the UK 😉 so I'm not surprised you thought that. I have showered it yes. But I make sure to let it dry before putting it back under the light. I also find it's much less sensitive than plants like the african violet.
@@GoodGrowing that would it explain it! I thought my accent detecting skills were up the creek xd I give it a wash then, and yes avs are so sentitive. My alocasia wentii dripped over one and left horrible marks xd
I have an alocasia black velvet hasnt done anything for a year im trying to swap some plants over to lechuza pon , its in soil now do you think it will be ok to swap it over to pon? X
if I'm just dusting, I'll use a big clean makeup brush. As for pest prevention, as long as you're spraying it in a well ventilated area with good air flow so it can dry quickly, it should be fine. Also best time to do it is in the morning, but keep out of bright light for a bit. They just don't like water sitting on their leaves for long periods of time
what do you mean by droopy? like limp to the touch? it could just be adjusting after the time of stress travelling to you and being repotted in pon. As long as you don't lose those leaves I wouldn't worry. If you do lose them, might be worth checking on the roots for rot
@@GoodGrowing their stems are bending down but the leaves still look very healthy. Today the younger one was turned up towards the light. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I'd hoped that with pon there is little danger of root rot...
how about swallowtail seeds. Not having too much luck. seeds came from china. Great video. Just got my black velvet plant today. Biggest thing seems like DONT OVER WATER!!!
Beautiful plant and cool how they use their dark leaves to take in sunlight, but their design didn't just evolve over time, a very creative Creator specially designed it that way ♥️

I wish we didn't have to grow these damn sensitive plants in a museum display rather than in and around our house.
What about flowering ?
What info can you share please ?
tbh I don't find their flowers that pretty so chop them off before they get to bloom
I have an alocasia black velvet hasnt done anything for a year im trying to swap some plants over to lechuza pon , its in soil now do you think it will be ok to swap it over to pon? X
I'd defo suggest making the switch. It might be a bit stressed at first but once it acclimates to the new environment I think it will LOVE it!
@@GoodGrowing thankyou will make the switch ☘️🌿🌱
How do you clean the leaves on this plant? I want to prevent pests on them and remove water stains
if I'm just dusting, I'll use a big clean makeup brush. As for pest prevention, as long as you're spraying it in a well ventilated area with good air flow so it can dry quickly, it should be fine. Also best time to do it is in the morning, but keep out of bright light for a bit. They just don't like water sitting on their leaves for long periods of time
My new baby is in pon too! But I just got it about a month ago. The 2 leaves still seem droopy. It's that normal? When will I see any new growth?
what do you mean by droopy? like limp to the touch? it could just be adjusting after the time of stress travelling to you and being repotted in pon.
My Alocasia isn’t making corms. It’s sprouting up shoots everywhere. There’s 10 of them. Has anyone experienced this?
My plant like this flower. Then all the leaves left. 😔
Now im waiting for it to come back🌱
yeah when alocasias flower it can take a lot of energy so sometimes they kill off leaves. I usually cut the blooms off before they get too big
how about swallowtail seeds. Not having too much luck. seeds came from china.
Great video. Just got my black velvet plant today. Biggest thing seems like DONT OVER WATER!!!
What does dappled sun mean? Like through a curtain?
It can mean through a sheer or lacy curtrain or like through a tree where there's just little bits of light, not concentrated or super bright
Rescued my black velvet yesterday from the Home Depot grave yard so let’s see if I can save her
Beautiful plant and cool how they use their dark leaves to take in sunlight, but their design didn't just evolve over time, a very creative Creator specially designed it that way ♥️
lovley
Mine just flowered
Ooh exciting!
It’s not even black? Does it turn black the older it gets?
This is definitely drama queen 😟. I have so much stress since I had it.
It needs perfect humidity level and stable temperature 😢
What is she saying, "pon"? "Pond"? What is this?
Me watching this because I think I burnt one of her leaves in the sun!! 😭😭😭💔
