Gene wanted to thank you for teaching me how to fish. I had no luck for months and finally caught my first bass this week, not one but three. The largest one I caught was right at 3 lbs and I let my 4 yo daughter reel it in as it was her first time fishing. Now we are both hooked!
Does my heart good to see someone else try to cast before first opening the bail :). I’m assuming when you get a bite they smack it since you’re on a slack line.
I watched this at least 3 times in hopes to ingrain it in my head for the next time I am out on the water. These are some of my favorites type of videos to watch multiple times. Watch it... go fish it.... then watch it again and see what ya forgot and or do better.
Watched 3-4 other vids on shaky head worm but the guys just weren't showing and explaining anything. I had seen another vid of yours that I really loved because you took the time to show the bait and explain it. It really helped to get the extra info and I love that you don't assume I know what you're talking about and just glaze over stuff. Thanks so much. I know this vid is 2 years old, but you're still teaching! :)
Hey Gene! Found some Shakey Heads in my tackle bag. That I bought last year. I don't jig fish much. But love Texas rig wrinkle worm fishing. Something I learned from Dad! So I decided this week to give Shakey Heads a try. I also found some straight worms in Black color. I just bought a Quantum Smoke HD reel in 7 to 3 ratio. I will probably go with a spinning combo. But, will put it on a baitcaster combo too. Just to see and feel the difference. Really can't wait to try your techniques on the water. It's early May 2023. Spawning time in Indiana. Thanks, Gene. Your videos are really helpful! Shawn.
Gene, I've been watching your videos for a couple weeks now and just love how infomative they are. I moved to Door County, WI about a year ago. We have fabulous fishing of all types up here. I get my boat in 4 days and can't wait to put some of the knowledge I got from your vids to the test. Keep up the good work bro. I like your vids the best of anyone's out there. I've been a bass fisherman my whole life and would love the opportunity to fish with you someday.
Watched your channel yesterday and the day before that. I never watched a fishing video, and fished my whole life, knew nothing about it. I got my first rod and reel today.
I just caught 2 very nice sized bass, one pushing 5 pounds today using stuff I learnt for your tutorial videos! Thanks man! Was working a lizard on a Carolina rig.
Fluke, thanks for another great video. I've been waiting for this video. I've tried and tried to fish a shakey head, but have never even gotten bit on it. I know exactly what I've been doing wrong now. I've watched other vids on this subject but nobody seems to explain things well enough for me to grasp ths technique properly. Appreciate the work you're doing. I've learned the most from you, Matt Allen and Tim Little than I have from anyone else, keep it up.
I've been shaking the worm since I was 14, and with your advice I finally landed a keeper at 33, I guess I wasn't wiggling the worm with enough finesse, had her mounted, now I'm the talk of the town. Thanks for the advice. lol really tho, good stuff.
Really like your videos. I’ve recently started fishing bass having just moved to Florida and I follow your advice. I only fish from the bank and found your right, everything works from a boat or the bank. Just wanted to say thanks for being such a great teacher.
Shaky head is a go-to rig in my homelake down in Mexico. We use it a lot, but you just taught me one or two new tricks. Thank you for an excelent video.
Thanks to your tutorial on how to use the Shaky head I finally got some fish on it. That was the only technique I could get fish to bite on yesterday and it help me and my co get 3 place in our club.
That was a awesome video. I’ve tried the shaky head but have never had luck. With the info you shared I’m very optimistic on my future outings . 👍👍👍🎣🎣🎣
Thanks for leaving the part where you tried to cast with the bail closed. I feel pretty dense when I do it so I feel much better about myself now. Haha.
Appreciate you pointing out the Bagley Shakeyhead jigs. They are awesome and are the only ones I use for this technique. For me, the worm has never pulled down. They really rival the screwlock ones! 🎣
All it takes is time, finesse, patience and listening to what is being said. I hope I can do what you say to catch the big ones. I have never been good with lures or baits, I have used worms, minnows or cut baits. I have to try an learn what you guys do.
Hey Gene. The tendinitis in your elbow is likely Tennis Elbow. If you wear a wrist brace when not fishing and ice the outside of your elbow several times a day it will get better. Also look up Tennis Elbow stretches on-line. Begin the stretches once it starts to calm from the rest and icing. Good Luck. Oh yeah, thanks for the vids.
Learned the FG knot last night. Switching from the uni to uni I can't thank you enough for constantly preaching it. Held up under tons of stress. Also great vid I learned alot!
Great tutorial. I fish rocky lakes and when my dropshot isnt working I can usually get them with a shakey head. One thing I dont think you covered in the video is using floating worms, I catch a lot more fish when using the z man floating, KVD or squirrel tail worms, that floating action really grabs attention even when you arent shaking it.
Well you have definitely taught me something I obviously have been doing this wrong. Even during tournaments that I just started doing and no one gave this information thanks for the advise
Great video Gene. Hope the tendinitis gets better soon. I have had it so bad I couldn't even pick up a quart of milk. For someone that fishes as much as you, tough to heal something like that, as the only thing that fixes it is rest. Best of luck!
Thanks for all the information and instructions. I’ve been sidelined for awhile now due to illnesses. But I’ve been trying to keep my knowledge up to new techniques and ways I haven’t tried. You keep things simple to understand even for us older people!
I just got into using casting gear for shakey head fishing. I'm using a ewg 4/0 or 5/0 1/8oz with 15lb leader on 30lb braid, fishing around weed lines and timber on medium heavy moderate 7ft rod. feels crazy nice. then for a bit more line sensitivity and feel of what is going on I'll use 10lb braid to 10-12lb mono leader in stained water or 6-10 in clear water I'll use fluoro. then I'll use the betkley 7inch or it's step down I think it's the 5 inch shakey head worm. in green pumpkin color. and both setup are great. the casting rod is great for the power so I can work weed lines and not fear if I get pulled into the weeds I'll be able to get fish out. then in more open water I'll switch to the 7ft medium, moderate fast with 10lb braid and that 6-12leader for a bit deeper fishing and wow.
I’ve been using Hyper Braid yellow 30 lb. test on a spinning rod and reel. I take a black magic marker, and black out about two rod lengths of line. The water I fish is not that murky but not clear. It’s an 83 acre reservoir. Mainly go wacky rig for skipping. I catch fish with this when nothing else is working.
Well last year mid summer I got my first kayak and couldn't be happier. Caught my PB bass second time out. Didn't do much shaky head fishing though. I'm making it a point to work on the shaky head this spring here in MN. Kayak fishing is the best social distancing activity ever. Appreciate your videos sir. Thank you for the lessons.
A Shaky head is one thing I end up using, and have confidence in. I like throwing elaztech worms from zman, and I did get some from strike king. I have used and landed fish on 4" straight tail, finesse worms, in green pumpkin, and tried a 7" worm in june bug only once, probably in the wrong place at the wrong time. I did order some in different colors a few weeks ago, which I'll be trying out. Sometimes I'll throw these same 4" worms t-rigged weightless, through pads and weeds for topwater action. I mostly rig the worms on 1/8 oz eagle claw lazer shaky head jigs, that have a collar instead of the screw lock. I did get some 1/4 oz ones, but haven't used them much. I fish these on ML,L, or UL rods, that have enough backbone for soft plastic fishing, with BFS(UL baitcasting) reels, and either 6, 8, or 10 lb braid.
Added the Shakeyhead to my repertoire and it has produced when I needed it to. The one thing I will add is that while fishing shallow laydowns is that I seem to get the fish to bite most when it is slightly hung up and shake it pretty hard to get it loose. The fish attack it as soon as it comes free.
I know there are some drawbacks but have you ever tried switching the handle of your spinning reels to the right side. I do that most of the time so I'm reeling with the same hand as my bait casting reels. Casting would take a little time to get used to but may help with hooksets!
My go-to rig for 2018-19. I haven't used it this year yet, but I'm sure I will. We have to use 1/2oz+ shakyheads. Our waters so deep, anything less and it takes forever to get down to the depths we need it to be at.
I find any time I'm on a river system/current having lake or pond I don't shake anything, cast it out, semi-slack line, ever so slightly heavier head (1/4oz or so) so that you don't get taken off down the current, and let the current wiggle that tail for me, works an absolute treat and I catch a bunch of smallmouth that way.
Oh i use moss green line and i never have to see my line bc everything ive ever learned is its all feel and thats so true for me. To each they own though. I also use 30lb line but its the size of 8
Have to agree I love using a shaky head it just flat out catches em and you can catch big fish as well as numbers and from my experience the size of the worm doesn’t seem to matter for me but the best shaky head for dirty water I have used is the big bite coontail worm
I love when people call fish “a nice little 3 1/2 / 4 pounder” haha I catch them and it’s the best thing ever and I’ve been on a roll these past weeks.
How do you know you have a bite? I've been fishing shakey head lately and lost two bass because I didnt set hook soon enough because I thought it was a snag each time lol I'm sure if I switch to high vis line it will help
Man I get bites up here on lake Nottley and Chatuge but can’t get the hook set been told let them set it and I’ve also tried to any tips or advice using 6-10 lb line and Green pumpkin or watermelon seed with various flakes.
Nice technique! And it catches. I can feel your pain though. I have absolutely no strength in my left bicep. Won't even contract to set a hook, reel. or cast.
Gene wanted to thank you for teaching me how to fish. I had no luck for months and finally caught my first bass this week, not one but three. The largest one I caught was right at 3 lbs and I let my 4 yo daughter reel it in as it was her first time fishing. Now we are both hooked!
Good on you Brandon! Gene is a humble guy that wants us all to enjoy this sport to the fullest. Great vid Gene.
That’s awesome. Also check out the ‘Ned Rig’ to me it’s dominate 😎
That is awesome! I just started myself! I've hooked couple of little largies but have yet to get one in.
Same for me!!
You pulled that net out like some slick James Bond move and I yelled at my TV I need that! LOL
Gene You are teaching this 68 year old new to Bass Fishing Guy a lot! Thanks!
Probably one of, if not the best teachers of bass fishing. Always appreciate your content.
I appreciate that!
Does my heart good to see someone else try to cast before first opening the bail :). I’m assuming when you get a bite they smack it since you’re on a slack line.

I watched about ten videos on Shaky Head rigging and fishing - yours was the best by far.

Right on. Thank you Craig.
Thanks for the excellent video Gene, going to give this a try. For those asking about the net, I paused the video and it's a Yakattack leverage net.
Watched your channel yesterday and the day before that. I never watched a fishing video, and fished my whole life, knew nothing about it.
I got my first rod and reel today.

Finally! A good, informative shaky head video. As always, Gene, you deliver. 👍
Thanks man. It's been a long time coming.
1 of my favorite UA-cam fisherman
Great live demonstration sir!
Just about the best training video i have seen! Thanks
I love how you integrate the advantages and right times to use a spinning rod vs a baitcaster. Great info!
Going to be social distancing on my kayak again this weekend, I'll remember this if the fish are also social distancing. Thanks for the lessons.
Thanks to your videos I can take my son fishing and actually catch some bass. Thanks for the direct clear to the point videos.
Great video. Shakes heads flat out work. You proved it.
Thanks to your tutorial on how to use the Shaky head I finally got some fish on it. That was the only technique I could get fish to bite on yesterday and it help me and my co get 3 place in our club.
My favorite shaky head worm is a plasma tail. Can’t beat the action and they are great on Ned rigs!
That was a awesome video. I’ve tried the shaky head but have never had luck. With the info you shared I’m very optimistic on my future outings . 👍👍👍🎣🎣🎣
I don't know who u r but u r awesome, u r knot afraid to share, luv it!
Thanks for leaving the part where you tried to cast with the bail closed. I feel pretty dense when I do it so I feel much better about myself now. Haha.
Thank you for this. I learned a ton here. I learned a lot I have been doing wrong. You really are an excellent teacher.
thank you! Finally, shakey-head explained in an understandable way... and I have all week-end to practice. 😊 🎣👍😎😊🎣
I need to try this out.
Going to a new lake this weekend gonna give this a tryout.
Great video, thank for you for sharing your knowledge
Appreciate you pointing out the Bagley Shakeyhead jigs. They are awesome and are the only ones I use for this technique. For me, the worm has never pulled down. They really rival the screwlock ones! 🎣

I'm the same way I have every type of lure and I can only catch things on worms.
Fish. Watch videos. Fish. You’ll get it if I can
Hey Gene. The tendinitis in your elbow is likely Tennis Elbow. If you wear a wrist brace when not fishing and ice the outside of your elbow several times a day it will get better. Thanks for all the helpful tips. 👍
Good video. Also good to see someone else forget to open the bail before trying to cast! I do that generally once every time I use one.
Learned the FG knot last night. Switching from the uni to uni I can't thank you enough for constantly preaching it. Held up under tons of stress. Also great vid I learned alot!
One day
Great tutorial. I fish rocky lakes and when my dropshot isnt working I can usually get them with a shakey head. Yup its like it's on a non stop drop and we all know bass love hitting worms on the drop just naturally falling.
Well you have definitely taught me something I obviously have been doing this wrong. Even during tournaments that I just started doing and no one gave this information thanks for the advise
Thanks for your making This. You taught me how to properly work this shaken head style work rig. Awesome 😎👍💯
Absolutely love my Omen black spinning rod!
Have you thought about switching the handle on your spinning rods. I know it’ll feel weird at first but it might help your hand
Thanks, Gene. Learn something useful every time. And thanks also for letting me fish during these harrowed times even if it is virtually.
Wow. That’s changed the way I fish a shaky head Thanks so much
Glad it helped
I was literally going to watch your old Shakey Head video after work today, but this is even better.
This video is SPOT ON ive been fishing it since 2012 and i do not use anything else. I always catch fish. I use baitcast and braid 🤷🏻♂️
Great video Gene. Hope the tendinitis gets better soon. I have had it so bad I couldn't even pick up a quart of milk. For someone that fishes as much as you, tough to heal something like that, as the only thing that fixes it is rest. Best of luck!
Yep. This is a bad time of year to have it.
Great video Gene and you put a lot of great information out there, really enjoy it 👍
Excellent information my friend, learning all I can as I am a rookie. In this was great!
Glad you enjoyed it
Gene , Thank you for teaching on the Shaky Head . I just caught my first bass on it, and Thanked you In my video !
That’s awesome man. Congrats.
@@Flukemaster Thanks

Just got my first shaky head recently. Seems like a great option for bank fishing as well since it is slow working.

Big fan of the Huk subphantis glacier pattern!

Here in florida thats exactly when they hit every type of soft plastic in my experience. As soon as it pops free they smash it 👍
@@kingghidorah7104 same if you have a overhanging tree. Cast it into a limb and let it fall, fish think its a bug.
Thanks for the info. The shaky head will on the yak for hugh pfa tournament on April 17
Good luck!
That net though! I need to find out who makes it and buy immediately!
Really enjoyed the video, some really good tips I can use in the near future.

I liked how Jake didn't hesitate when you hooked that fish and went straight for the net.
I fish this setup 95% of the time at night. I use 7'3 jenko gambler hvy with fast action. My go to reel is slx
Thank you very much for sharing
My go-to rig for 2018-19. I haven't used it this year yet, but I'm sure I will.
We have to use 1/2oz+ shakyheads. Our waters so deep, anything less and it takes forever to get down to the depths we need it to be at.
Really enjoyed the video !! Have you ever thought about switching hands ? Sorry your right one is messed up. 🙏🙏
I did but it’s going to take some getting used to.
Flukemaster no doubt but may be worth it. God Bless
Really good 👍 video thanks Gene and top notch camera man
That XL YakAttack net is sweet!

Great video! Thanks for all the great tips 🤙
My go to is a shakey head with a paddle tail or a Craw. Never had much luck with a worm
Try a big trd by zman. They slam those here in AZ.
Effen shaky head! Can you go over some River condition fishing with us!. All I fish is the Wisconsin River and the Fox River into Green Bay.
Nice! Gonna have to try this! So what GoPro mount or rod are. You using on the front of your boat. At. Head high? I. Like. That as well!
With the old school type head (no screw lock) can the hook be rigged to be exposed? If there is little to no structure/stumps/weeds..... Thanks!
Have to agree I love using a shaky head it just flat out catches em and you can catch big fish as well as numbers and from my experience the size of the worm doesn’t seem to matter for me but the best shaky head for dirty water I have used is the big bite coontail worm
Smallmouth love em too
Always learning more and more! Thank you for the video brother! 🤜🏼🎣🏆
I love when people call fish “a nice little 3 1/2 / 4 pounder” haha I catch them and it’s the best thing ever and I’ve been on a roll these past weeks.
Gene, if the fish are not biting moving bait, stained water and it's real windy out is the shakey head your go to bait?
I got my Shakey head today I can't wait to try it
I knew you was going fishing when I see you roll through town with your boat hooked up🤣 should have took me with you
Great tips Gene . Love it! 👍👊
Awesome, usual! Thank you for all your efforts in teaching us!
So happy you did this video!
Went out for the first time in my kayak couple days ago had so much fun didn't catch any fish tho missed some real good bites
Love your channel but why you don't teach the GT knot I use it and to me it holds it's own weight against the double uni
How do you know you have a bite? I've been fishing shakey head lately and lost two bass because I didnt set hook soon enough because I thought it was a snag each time lol I'm sure if I switch to high vis line it will help
That's my problem I just assume everything is a snag.
I like ultravibe speedcraw greenpumpkin with orange flake on the BBB fintwist shakeyhead
What i wanna know flukemaster ive watched a ton of your videos and can never figure out what brand of net that is i really like it
That’s a YakAttack Leverage Lansing Net
Flukemaster awesome thank you sir I appreciate keep up the awesome content and tight lines from Washington state
Man I get bites up here on lake Nottley and Chatuge but can’t get the hook set been told let them set it and I’ve also tried to any tips or advice using 6-10 lb line and Green pumpkin or watermelon seed with various flakes.
Nice net dude!
Nice technique! And it catches. I can feel your pain though. I have absolutely no strength in my left bicep. Won't even contract to set a hook, reel. or cast.
Jeebus Gene, you need to get seen for that.
Now I absolutely love the Shaky Head...I’m a slow speed guy.
