I like that ledge idea. I fish ledges alot- and tend to keep away from the face a little- steppin' it like that on little shelfs is definitely a solid deal. Yeah, I got a real-nice head I use for weeds& wood- owner ultrahead 1/16-3/8 w/ 1/0 offset forged hook. Then ballhead& standup. Quick question though; do you notice any lower hookup ratio on the screwheads? Ball or standup. I run both those too& have ripped tge screws outta the ballheads after missing a few key fish. standups i kept seems to rig better with em
Great breakdown of when and where to use the different shaky head jigs. Been using ball head jigs for decades up here in the True North of Ontario. Haha. As mentioned in your last shaky head video I am fond of the VMC Rugby jig which is rigged texas style and is more of a hybrid between a ball and a football jig. Because it can be rigged weedless without a screw lock the hook up ratio is huge and when you set the hook they are pegged almost 99.99% in the roof of the mouth. My favourite Shaky head jig that can do it all.
I really like using a shaky head in what little deep water we have around here. If you can find any sort of steep bank that levels off, not really a bluff because we don't have those here, but were the water gets deep fast. Sometimes the fish setup right where that bank and bottom meet up. It's one of the best places I know of to use a shaky head, especially a flat head. I'll also use it when I'm fishing alongside deep brush piles. If I can thread the needle and just skirt the outside of that brush pile, I can connect with some big 'uns!
Very important info right there, I truly have never thought about shaky head “conditions”. I like the YUM shaky head, although quite hard to find at the moment, the jig head is almost like a Frankenstein of all 3 of the jigs you demonstrated. Plus it has a great pigtail keeper with a needlepoint starter.
I want give a shout to the lake breakdowns. My confidence was through the roof and I landed a lot bass. The lakes were in Northern Cal. Lake Berryessa, Clear Lake and Lake Oroville. Thank you.
Hey, since I started watching your channel you got me started building my own rods and I’ve learned more useful fishing tips than any other channel. Thanks for all the great info!
Needed to hear that info..Also sometimes is the topic or video you make is it also like some thing we might ought to be fishing based on time of year .I think yes
Q. Was fishing this weekend and putting a lure on the line. No one talks about this but does it ever matter which side of the eye you put your line through first? Maybe over thinking this. Shaky head for example line in from the "top" or the "bottom"?
I like the look of the Dirty Jigs Shakey head screw lock because it is short enough that it doesn't look like it would interfere much with the bite of the hook
This got me thinking, could you do a video on your best snagless / weedless setups? We have so many snags here from milfoil and rock and wood, other vegetation etc. Its pretty frustrating. Thanks.
I use round ball heads the most, and I fish rock mostly so i guess that's why I like them so much. I was shown to rig them up Texas rig style though instead of with an exposed point. Which bugged me at first because they have such a small bite, if you're using a thicker worm- there's not much left to stick the fish. But- because I use a lot of z man baits on my shaky heads, I didn't want to change to the screw keeper or any of that- that stuff doesn't play well with elaztech baits usually. So, I found two solutions- either use wide gap shaky heads- and they do make them, or just barely skin hook the head and rig it Texas rig style with the point buried in the worm. When I set the hook the head tears loose leaving plenty of gap to stick the fish. If I'm not using elaztech- then I'll go with the push on keepers- usually the Gambler Giggy head.
Just don’t seem to have confidence with one. I always seem to just lean towards a finesse jig. I will work with one more this year though. I will keep all of this info in mind. Thanks it all makes sense and will help when trying to choose .
I just got a few of those SC shaky heads to fish mixed cover. I'm a coangler so I need to limit my tackle. Sounds like that head will work for most things.
We should seen this video before I bought my shaky head lineup. Essentially I bought stand-up jigs in areas that I'm fishing that are totally broken rock in cover. Never even knew there was a difference. None the less, all my Shakey heads are Dirty Jigs. I have a bunch of the Scott Canterbury heads.
I have success with all of those shaky heads, but I’m trying to find more tungsten heads and it does make a difference to me. I love Dirty Jigs across the board, ask them for tungsten 😜🤔 great tips on the tight line with the ball head,it’s so much fun, I learned it on Kentucky lake long time ago and forgot about it lately 👍😜
Do you believe that the stand up type shakyhead lose more fish? I've heard a few pros say it does. I can't say I fished a lot of the stand-up type since I don't get to fish 300 days a year. However, I can't see the difference...What's your opinion?
@@MattStefanFishing Thatswhat I think also. Just wondering why they would say that. I mean we're able to catch fish with 1oz punching weights and 1/2oz football jigs, I don't see how a 3/8oz stand up shakyhead would pop a fish mouth open enough to miss a hook set.
My tournament partner went crazy a few years back. We learned a nc crankbait legend was using a shakey head as much or more than the crankbait. Then we found out he was using a stand-up 1/2oz. My partner went crazy he says its not a shakey head if its over 1/4oz and he said not a shakey head because its a stand-up style. I did agree I allways thought of a shakey head as 1/8oz but I didn't agree about the stand-up part. I can still get him wound up today about it
Thanks for the tips, that's definitely one of the techniques I should spend more time using instead of usually just resorting to other things or at least give it a fair shake(sorry I couldn't resist 😂)
My favorite jighead is a ball head but the new SMH jig head is awesome. Even for non Z-man plastics. I prefer the zman fattyz or the maxscent hit worm. SMH worm is also really good.
I am catching some decent smallmouth out of the Snake River (reservoirs) in Idaho, on a Carolina Rig. I feel like I need the weight to contact the rocks as part if the luring effect. However I am loosing a lot of set ups in the rocks. Mainly my weight is getting hung up and when I go to pop it out, my main line breaks. Any remedies for that? I have tried changing my main line from braid to co-Polymer yesterday and that was better. Perhaps I should try the Lindy no snag sinker but I like my weight and bead contacting the rocks. Thanks. I really enjoy your show every day.
I'm also In Idaho and I fish the snake river sometimes as well. Tons of smalliez on the snake. Where abouts on the snake do you fish? I normally drop my boat in at Walter's ferry or celebration park.
Pray the tournament goes great
Thanks
Great explanation of the shaky head! I sometimes pick the wrong design for what Im fishing and get hung a bunch so This should help!
Nice!
Agreed!

I like a1/4-3/8 screw lock with a flat bottom for anything deeper. And the 1/8-1/4oz B-Lat SMH jig head for shallower water.
Thanks for sharing

Thanks for the explanation of the differences. Fish hard and get them!
Thanks
My head was always shaking when it came to this. Thanks for making it easier. Well done 👍.

That’s awesome
Great timing. I've been looking around for Shaky Head info. Thanks!

great explanation
Thanks
thanks for the information
starting to fish shaky this year
very helpful thx
you bet!
I like using the new SMH head by b.latt, I also like using the g-finesse trick head and the old school slider head
I’ll give them a try
The pink trick worm on the shakey head has been on fire for me here in southeast Georgia this spring. 🤙
Good solid info again, thanks for the vid
Thanks
Very informative
Thanks
A couple great shaky head videos lately. Keep em coming.
Thanks, will do!

I also use a football style head for rock and a slider head in clear water where I want the fall to be erratic.

Thanks for another video

yep theres is short

Glad to help

Great idea!
Berkley makes an awesome shaky head now, it is exactly what I believe is the perfect head!
Awesome
Best head for mud bottom? Do you leave the hook exposed when fishing brush/wood?
I prefer stand up for mud bottom. i fish it weedless around wood
Outstanding information.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for those helpful tips!!!👊🏻 Never realized there were different types. Thanks for explaining the use for each one!! Stay Safe & God Bless!!!

Matt, love your hardcore tips, man! I’m a relatively new angler, and by no means a bass angler, but the info and content keeps me entertained!
Thanks!
Great info thx sir

Which head would u use for dirt bottom ? Thanks
stand up

Good stuff. What water temp in spring are we looking for to use the Shakey head?
I start using with water in mid 50’s

No. I think the bait keeper is what loses more fish

Hey Matt, what is a good max scent or power bait shaky head worm? I was thinking the 6” bottom hopper?
Boot Im hopper and the hit worms

What are the TRUE advantages of a shakey head, over the same bait, with an 1/16 or 1/8 Texas rig?
they stand up better
