  • He joined Floyd as guitarist and co-lead vocalist in 1968, effectively as a replacement for founder member Syd Barrett, who was dismissed from the band shortly afterwards.

David Gilmore took it upon himself to make sure Syd was taken care of by personally seeing to it that Syd received all the royalties he was due, until Syd’s death in 2006. Also, it was David that helped Syd with his solo career, however, Syd just couldn’t get it together. He was more than Syd’s replacement, he was his friend! I respect him fully!

@saxon priest a lot of people still resent Waters and with good reason ! Waters was a total dick, no wonder Dave is trolling him. Payback. My God, David is impossibly handsome in these clips. More than that he makes a guitar sing. And if it weren't for him, there would never have been a Dark Side, never a Wish You Were Here. Yes, a bit of the music they made when he first joined the band was a bit...iffy. But he ultimately became the driving musical force in the Floyd. Yeah, Roger can have the lyrics. But without David Gilmour, they would have been just a "wow, they made one great album" progressive British rock band.

Pinky Floyd agree. Gilmour took them in a much heavier direction. No comparison between those two men. Each brilliant. Each gifted creators. Syds story is tragic and beautiful. Gilmour supported him in every attempt to capture his essence. Like lightening in a bottle.

Very well said, Cee Jay. From all the interviews I've read/heard, I think they all (especially Roger and David) carried a heavy load of guilt and confusion about what they could have done differently re: Syd. Obviously that influenced some of their later songs. And I think it's at least nice that David kept in touch with Syd's family, kept apprised of his condition and made sure he got all his royalties.
Aside from that, David Gilmour is one unbelievably talented human. I wish things could have worked out better for Syd but, on the other hand, I am so grateful for the music was created in the subsequent combination of Waters/Gilmour/Wright/Mason.

It's criminal, isn't it? So... he gets incredible guitar skills, jaw-dropping looks, from what everyone says who works with him - is a nice, laid back, lovely person to hang with, has a great sense of humour, is a great dad (according to interviews with his ex-wife, his present wife and his adopted son) AND (oh come ON now, this is getting ridiculous) is a great cook.
Seems to me he got way more than his share of gifts, no?
Excuse me, I must now go and sigh over the gorgeous vision that is young David.

The Floyd sound, early and throughout, was founded on Wright's keyboards. He was Floyd's John Paul Jones. Without him, the house would crumble.

The magazine celebrated their 4th Year, Syd Barrett's 22nd Birthday on January 6,1968 and Nick Mason's 24th Birthday on January 27,1968.
The group were photographed surrounding a cake while holding wine glasses.
