My dad used to play this song every Saturday morning and I would wake up to it. Then we’d go kayaking and he coached me and my friends. 7 years later I became world champion and Olympic medalist and cried on the phone when I called him. 2 months later he died and this was the main song we played at his funeral. Dad I owe you everything and that song is an expression of this

Tomorrow is the funeral service for my brother who took his own life on June 10, 2024. He suffered from schizophrenia. This will be the last song. He was only 39 years old. Now he is free. He didn't want to suffer anymore and made that decision for himself. It's okay for us. Rest in peace my little brother. We'll meet Again. Now you're having your Great Gig in the Sky. Love you forever
This song was played at my grandfather's funeral. Pink Floyd was his favourite band and we'd spend hours listening to music together. Grandad, shine on you crazy diamond, I wish you were here.

When my father died, I played this music at his funeral. He loved this music to the point of madness. When he was slightly drunk, he would close his eyes and go somewhere far away. Now, my father is far from me, and this music brings back his eyes, his voice, and everything I remember from his soul. Again and again, he continues living on through these notes.
Reading the comments here is a testament to the universality of this piece . i discovered them when in my late teens and now at seventy i am still breathless at hearing the piece . for whomever reads this comment , Shine on and Big Love .
I remember when I was young. The summer of 84 found me on my Uncles farm in central Kansas, wheat country, on the back of a lonely tractor under the Kansas sun. From dawn to evening, I made concentric passes around the harvested wheat fields at 1.5 MPH, no one else around (for sometimes) miles. I brought a tape recording of the album ‘Wish You Were Here’ and would listen to it through headphones in the evenings and look out of the 2nd floor window of my room across the endless prairie of Pastures and wheat fields as the sun set on another day. It was so long ago now for me. When I listen to this song now, my mind is filled the the sights, sounds and smells of my uncles old farm. What I would not give to go back to that time, to have one more summer of working with my uncle on his farm, driving tractors and enjoying the sunrises and sunsets of central Kansas, listening to the ‘Wish You Were Here’ album. To catching a small part of my past and enjoying the moment again.
That's the power of music from bygone eras even songs you may not like that much can trigger powerful memories but I wonder if songs of today will be as powerful in 20 years time.
I started listening to Pink Floyd in 1972 and it was and is the BEST I've ever heard. I'll be 64 next week (9-11) and will listen till I am gone from this sad world. AlwaysHappyTimes!!!
I got introduced to their music when I was 15 in 2004 and now I am 32 years old, this world has rapidly gone to shit during the lasttwo decades. Everyone is selfish, everyone gives a fuck about responsibilities, everyone depends on what's best for them. Once my class teacher said:"You were in the wrong time!" It shocked me for years and now the older I get, bit by bit I get it. I am different, don't want to fit into something. So yeah, this song is something like a cure from nowadays influenced bullshit. Thank God, my foster mom said: "wanna check out what I heard during my puberty?" She played Another Brick In The Wall LP on a vinyl record. THAT experience changed my life for all times, so yeah there is hope for all of us appreciating this music and remembering what it means to be human!
When i was fighting with addiction, every single night i played this song to find peace and to fall asleep. Thank you Pink Floyd and i know that there are a lot of us diamonds.
My father was a cancer patient on his death bed, when i turned this on, he listened it calmly and after somedays he died peacefully... Whenever I listen i can feel that moment with him....
Unlike nearly everyone on here, I am not going through tough times or have lost a child or a spouse or boyfriend. Life is good. I am blessed. And I just came to enjoy this song.
For those who aren’t aware, this song is about Pink Floyd’s original guitarist, Syd Barrett. Shine On (S) You Crazy (Y) Diamond (D). Syd apparently took a lot of psychedelic drugs while quite young, which is thought to have induced schizophrenia. (It’s also been said that his mental health issues were inevitable, but the drugs were a catalyst) “Now there's a look in your eyes, like black holes in the sky”. That’s how a lot of people apparently described him after the damage was done. I hope he’s found peace.
@Ed Kelly you do realize that not everyone reads the shit “up top”!!! We come for the comments usually, and dread the “Mr. Karen’s “ like u! I knew the Syd Barrett connection, but still wanted to read it again.....thank you Conner Heath
As a schizophrenic man Pink Floyd’s music always has a special place in my heart and to know I’m going through the same issues as syd it always brings me back to the music
My Dad died to this song in his bed at home. It was as if he chose this song for his passage or the song released the tension that he was hanging onto. I held his hand and told him it's ok to go now. We will be ok. And he began to relax and took one last look at me then left. Pink Floyd means more to me now than it did even then if that's possible. Thank you Roger, David and all of you who took part in this masterpiece.
My husband died 25 years ago August 7th. He wanted it played at his funeral, but his mom wouldn't allow it, but a friend at the radio station who knew us as musicians played it in it's in entirely as a beautiful tribute! Thank you, Jen, and Al, you jackals! Died at 39, and I still miss you!
when i was 13 years old, i'd put this song on, sit on my bed, and dream into my future. that was 40 years ago. right now, the song makes me dream back 40 years into the past. yep, that's the power of this masterpiece.
I lost my only child.. My Son.. In 2018... It broke me.. Such a good baby, and sweet young boy, And what Great Young Man. He passed at the age of 27.. He is shining light.. And we would listen to all kinds of music.. This what I had put in his service , and his cards... Shine on my Crazy Diamond 💎 in Heaven!!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
My dad passed away on jan 16th from covid. We both had it. I feel such immense grief in my heart, but as I get further and further away from the date of his death I appreciate and celebrate the amazing father and friend he was. I play this in your honor dad. I love you. Shine on you crazy diamond...
How is it possible to you have so much feelings with a music ? I feel like i am crying, smiling, dreaming, living, yelling, dancing in the same time...the music video is also so nice, don't need any drugs, this song is one
The fact that this song is dedicated to their closest friend and original leader of the band Syd Barrett, who had mental health problems but nonetheless was a huge inspiration for them even after he left the band is heartbreaking
Yeah, it adds so much more emotion to the song. IIRC, Gilmour would always try to fit a Barrett song into compilations and live recordings, to make sure he got royalties.
My friends and I used to listen to this song/album late at night 40 years ago after the parties had ended. Complete silence, no iPhones, just listening to it. Every time I hear it again I stop what I’m doing and turn it up and I’m magically transported back to that era. I’m 57 now and a 25 year cop and it is a nice break/memory. Next year I’ll be retired and listening to it with a joint in my hand again.
This was played at my friend Mick's funeral... He never had many friends and had a hard life, but I took to him the first day I saw him and we were good friends... This song will keep mick alive in my heart... Shine on mate 💎
My best friend just passed away and he was a once in a lifetime type of friend. The kind of person who opens your mind up and pushes you to be more conscious of the energies of this universe. He died way too young. He was a bit different. When we were young people would laugh at him for being goofy or even too smart and dorky, but I always loved him for who he was. He took his mind to new places that would make most human beings cower in fear, and his fearlessness inspired me to grow into a more genuine human being. Losing him early breaks my heart, and this song captures that emotion. RIP Sherman Kaplitz. You were a diamond that will continue to shine for eternity. I love you brother.
I'm so sorry to hear that. I also had a best friend, same type of person/being/human as me. Passed away at 24. Never ever had a connection with another person like that ever again. Our conversations were just about the most beautiful things, things we both wanted and knew we had to do. I feel that pain my friend. My heart and soul reaches out to you! 🙏⭐
13 minutes of pure genius! The first words turn up at 8 minutes, but we don’t care. It’s a masterpiece. It takes some balls to do that, but they truly and utterly pulled it off. Can’t wait to see Dave in Rome next week🇮🇹
This song holds an incredible spot in my heart. I remember being very young and watching my mom dance and spin around the living room and kitchen listening to this as loud as our living room speakers could push it. Cleaning and enjoying herself with a Joint in hand. Then of course, the lyrics would come. And she would sing like it was her last breath on earth. I miss her dearly to this day, and every time I hear this song, I can see her once more enjoying life as it unfolded in front of her. Taking on every obstacle, like nothing was too big. Honestly makes me cry nearly every time. Shine on, Momma. You crazy, crazy diamond.
A man, who was NOT my father but in adulthood loved and treated me like he was... This is his song. The great thing is that his wife and kids accept me the same. He has since passed, but will live on in all of us.
My boyfriend discovered Pink Floyd when he was a teenager and it was the “Pink Floyd The Wall” cassette tape. He grew up listening to Pink Floyd and used those songs to heal so much of his trauma he didn’t realize he had had. He would play them when he was happy, sad, angry, grieving, every emotion he was going through, Pink Floyd was his remedy. Now, I listen to them as I grieve him. He gave me 6 years of great experiences! He took me to see Roger Waters live in Kansas City and saw Nick Mason in Tulsa! He saw Gilmore in London years ago and it was one of his favorite memories. It’s coming up on 5 months without him and now I listen to Pink Floyd just to feel him again. I love you, Matt Mason, forever! Shine On You Crazy Diamond
Used to listen to this when I was 15 with headphones on, turned way up and in a darkened room. 44 years later I'm doing exactly the same thing but the headphones are now wireless noise cancelling. Bliss.

Pink Floyd's music is on another level, unmatched in quality in my opinion, but I'd still rather have sight over hearing if those were the choices. With sight, one is still able to function at a reasonable level. With blindness you're forever in darkness, and very limited to what is attainable, always dependent on equipment and sometimes relying on the kindness of others to help you. Also good music once heard will forever be with you, you can always replay it within your consciousness and even subconscious. Sight is too valuable.
I am in the sixth decade of my life. I just spent three hours working in my yard. When I was finished, it was 11:11 AM, and I was exhausted. It was time for a beer. I came out on my porch. put this song on and reminisced of days gone by. “Remember when we were young?”
I'm sure you shone like the sun. Thank you for sharing such amazing music to our generation, i'm very grateful, it's help me cope with a lot, still is. Shine on, you crazy diamond.
We are 32 years old and live in the north western (so getting this wrong) section of Morioh where the villas are. We work at (forgot workplace) and be home by 8 pm, we make sure we're in bed by 11pm after drinking a warm glass of milk and doing streches for the 20 minutes. We wake up without fatigue, we don't smoke but we occasionally drink. Nothing was wrong after our last check up and like to keep it that way. All we want is to live a quiet, peacefull life Now you guys can butcher me all you wish for getting everything wrong
My mum had mental problems throughout her life, bipolar disorder and else. The one song that gave her some peace in the most troubled times was this one. She'd ask me to play it over and over. In her life so constrained by pain this song gave her the freedom to dream to be another soul. Even when she was bed-ridden, her memory compromised, she'd listen to the song and she'd smile, she'd touch the pictures with her fingers as if they were toys she'd see for the first time. And in her last days when she started her last journey, I'd still play her this music, holding her nearly lifeless hand. I hope she could listen to it one more time. Thank you Pink Floyd and thank you video-maker, you made the flight of a troubled soul a bit lighter...
On June 5, 1975, Pink Floyd was recording their "Wish You Were Here" album at Abbey Road Studios in London. Syd Barrett, who at this time in his life was heavyset, with a completely shaved head and eyebrows wandered into the studio while the band was recording. Because of his drastically changed appearance, the band could not recognise him for some time. When they eventually recognised Barrett, Roger Waters was so distressed he was reduced to tears. Apparently, when "Wish You Were Here" was played, "Sid stood up and said, 'Right, when do I put my guitar on?'" Richard Wright recalled. "And of course, he didn't have a guitar with him. And we said, 'Sorry, Syd, the guitar's all done.'" Wright has also said "Roger Waters was there, and he was sitting at the desk, and I came in and I saw this guy sitting behind him--huge, bald, fat guy. I thought, "He looks a bit...strange..." Anyway, so I sat down with Roger at the desk and we worked for about ten minutes, and this guy kept on getting up and brushing his teeth and then sitting--doing really weird things, but keeping quiet. And I said to Roger, "Who is he?" and Roger said "I don't know." and I said "Well, I assumed he was a friend of yours," and he said "No, I don't know who he is." Anyway, it took me a long time, and then suddenly I realised it was Syd, after maybe 45 minutes. He came in as we were doing the vocals for "Shine On You Crazy Diamond", which was basically about Syd. He just, for some incredible reason he picked the very day that we were doing a song which was about him. And we hadn't seen him, I don't think, for two years before. That's what's so incredibly weird about this guy. And a bit disturbing, as well, I mean, particularly when you see a guy, that you don't, you couldn't recognise him. And then, for him to pick the very day we want to start putting vocals on, which is a song about him. Very strange."
That didn´t take place by chance ... some cruel voyeuristic, sadistik , opportunist *unt made it happen . Shame on whoever made that happen fro promotional purposes . Fu*k´em all !
It's too much of a coincidence for Syd to turn up at the studios when they decide to write a song about him, especially after several years have gone by. Someone must have told Syd to turn up.
For my brother, who has paranoid schizophrenia. He used to sit in his truck and blast this. Didn't know the deep meaning behind it as much as I do now. Rip Syd. And I love you lil brother, shine on! ✨💎 This song will forever make me cry, and smile. 😭✨💎
My fifteen-year-old daughter is listening to this. I've succeeded as a father. ;-) Edit: She has no idea who or what JoJo is (no comics at all). She just loves old music (Pink Floyd, Genesis/Gabriel, Eagles, Dire Straits/Knopfler, Queen… you get the idea).

My friend Joe Jordan introduced me to this song. At first it was very bizzarre, but after some time it really became an adventure. He told me that this song can fix his entire bloody stream and heal his wounds. For him this was a golden experience. The first time i heard this it sounded like a requiem, I truly don't know why, but then it became special, because it felt like watching the night sky in search for stardust in the middle of Egypt as crusaders. Sometimes i feel like that this song can stop time for 9 seconds and then gives me an overdrive of emotions. I truly think that this song was made in heaven, because it's unbreakable!!!
Playing it now for my darling husband who lost his short battle with Cancer on the 9/5/22.. he played it on his phone and put it on my pregnant tummy so that his unborn son could hear it. ♥️♥️♥️💔💔💔

Sorry for your loss. Your husband sounds like he was a pretty cool guy. My Dad passed in June and he also saw to it that I listen to Floyd in utero. He passed away listening to this song. I think it's a beautiful song to honor a loved one.
Back in 2015 I faced the worst depressive episode of my life. My father passed away, I went through a bad breakup, didn't have much friends and was struggling with my career options as a college sophomore. At moments I felt like ending my life, but would often be reminded of the struggle my mother would have to go through if she lost me. I got "Shine on you crazy diamond" tattooed on my left arm as a reminder to keep going through this tough time. Almost nine years later, this song reminds me of the struggle that I went through. I'm glad I survived. Growth is real. Tough times do end.
I remember when i was 14, my brother used to listen to this song in his room. He played his music very loud, i could hear it through closed door. He would stand on the balcony and smoke cigarette while looking straingt ahead of him, and thinking about his life, and he was only 18... I wish he wasn't burdened by his thoughts at that young age, and instead he was happy and content with his life and he would spend more time with me his younger sister....now i am 40 and my dearest brother is no longer amongst us 😢... You left so soon my dear brother 😭 i love you!!!!!!!!!!
This song reminds me of the the tale my mom told me about how i caught a fever so bad that we had to drive out of town but unfortunately we got caught on a blizzard but a man with gorgeous style of hair helped our car to go again. My hair was fully inspired by that guy, and anyone that mock my hair will face the consequences. Love you mom.. I grew up without father 😅
NAH BRO🥲💀 ... My name is Yoshikage Kira. I am 33 years old. I live in the Northeast section of Morioh, where all the villas are, and I am not married. I work for the Kame Yu department stores, and I get home every day by 8PM at the latest. I don't smoke, but I occasionally drink. I'm in bed by 11PM, and I make sure to get 8 hours of sleep, no matter what. After having a glass of warm milk and doing about 20 minutes of stretches before bed, I usually have no problems sleeping until morning. Just like a baby, I wake up with no fatigue or stress in the morning. I was told there were no issues at my last check-up. I'm trying to explain that I am a person who wishes to have a very quiet life. I take care not to trouble myself with any enemies, like winning and losing, that would cause me to lose sleep at night. That is how I deal with society, and I know that is what brings me happiness. Although, if I were to fight I wouldn't lose to anyone.
Remember when you were young And you shined like the sun Shine on you crazy diamond Now there's a look in your eyes Like black holes in the sky Shine on you crazy diamond You were caught in the crossfire Of childhood and stardom Blown on the steel breeze Come on you target For faraway laughter Come on you stranger, you legend, you martyr And Shine You reached for the secret too soon And you cried for the moon Shine on you crazy diamond Threatened by shadows at night And exposed in the light Shine on you crazy diamond Well you wore out your welcome With random precision Rode on the steel breeze Come on you rover You seer of visions Come on you painter, you piper, you prisoner And Shine!
It's a night. Nobody is out here. David's guitar is playing... and a shot of whiskey in my hand for the memories of all who is not in this world. Rest In Peace!
A thousand times, this song has healed my wounds. Once again, it is doing the same. I'm a Canadian country boy now living in Japan with an exceptionally intelligent, and nearly crazy Japanese wife. Her mother caught the covid virus today, yet she can still find time to blame me for being insufficient, though I took her mother to the hospital. I only asked her to " leave me alone to listen to this song. It brings me peace". Yet she tried again and again to make me understand that I must tr harder to be valuable to the whole community. I'm friggin' tired. I need a break. ,,,at least until tomorrow.
Life’s too short to waste it on the constant chatter coming from the baby souls of this world. You have free will, baby… you can leave anytime you want to.
To my mom, Denise, who passed away from complications of cancer this past Sunday. One day she smiled and said she would kind of like this song played at her funeral. She was a bright diamond to all she loved.
For how much a guy on the internet can help, I'd say Rest In Peace Denise. Stay strong lady. Life is... harsh at times. Better times will come, your mother is looking at you from her place now. The best way to honour her now is by living up to your dreams. Life is tough, but you are tougher. She'll never die as long as she is in your heart.

I listened to this for hours when my son passed away. I was never the same, I hated this world, I hated my life. I survived it, but I was never the same. I had to be strong for the next 3 kids I was entrusted to raise. When you fail at everything I ever tried, I thought I had that right. I guess I was wrong. Now it is time to just shine on!

My girlfriend’s father introduced me to Pink Floyd. This was the first song he played, at 23.00 waiting for her to arrive back after her flight from a rowing competition. Those 13 minutes of my life set me up on an emotional journey with Pink Floyd. Their songs are perfect for me to connect and express my feelings when listening to music. This is a perfect song which is just absolutely sensational. The guitar is played note perfect every second. Powerful to say the least. It also helped me create an amazing bond with my girlfriends father and we have continued to spend quality time together listening to music as two. Thank you Pink Floyd for the creation of this art.
Call it Nirvana. Call it euphoria. Call it passion. Call it love. I don't know what the hell it is but when I lie in a dark room with this turned up to 11 I feel something I can't describe. I cry every single time. It takes me to thinking about the lost ones. This song to me is everything. A masterpiece.

Zack Smith shit went from 0 to 100 real quick
I was born in 1977 parents influenced me to this kinda of music and love every minute of it
I got introduced to their music when I was 15 in 2004 and now I am 32 years old, this world has rapidly gone to shit during the lasttwo decades. Everyone is selfish, everyone gives a fuck about responsibilities, everyone depends on what's best for them.
Once my class teacher said:"You were in the wrong time!"
It shocked me for years and now the older I get, bit by bit I get it.
I am different, don't want to fit into something.
So yeah, this song is something like a cure from nowadays influenced bullshit.
Thank God, my foster mom said: "wanna check out what I heard during my puberty?"
She played Another Brick In The Wall LP on a vinyl record.

The funny thing about bands especially British ones they're always just fkn around when they create. They themselves would've had no idea the impact
As a younger generation citizen, I discovered this band last week and love it

As a schizophrenic man Pink Floyd’s music always has a special place in my heart and to know I’m going through the same issues as syd it always brings me back to the music
My Dad died to this song in his bed at home. It was as if he chose this song for his passage or the song released the tension that he was hanging onto. I held his hand and told him it's ok to go now. We will be ok. And he began to relax and took one last look at me then left. Pink Floyd means more to me now than it did even then if that's possible. Thank you Roger, David and all of you who took part in this masterpiece.

Hi I Recommend checking out an indie rock song & Video Called 'looking into the mirror' by Robert Nix
Yeah, it adds so much more emotion to the song. IIRC, Gilmour would always try to fit a Barrett song into compilations and live recordings, to make sure he got royalties.

Pink floyd is one of the main reasons I'd rather be blind over deaf .
Dang that’s some strong love for music
Amazing words. Remarkable.
Deaf people feel the same way. In fact, terribly isolated... Can you believe the asshole running the Deaf schools of this country tried to kill sign language? He order them to read lips 👄, which give you a problem with “p” and “b”. And forget it when it comes to mustachioed... What a prize piece of shite 💩!
Totally agree. Im going blind
This music takes you into another place in time forever, I’m 68 and I’ve always loved this music.

And we said, 'Sorry, Syd, the guitar's all done.'"
Wright has also said "Roger Waters was there, and he was sitting at the desk, and I came in and I saw this guy sitting behind him--huge, bald, fat guy. Very strange."
very heartfelt moment

It's too much of a coincidence for Syd to turn up at the studios when they decide to write a song about him, especially after several years have gone by. Someone must have told Syd to turn up.
It relates to him partly losing his mind, from doing way too many psychedelic drugs over the years...

This is my favorite band of all time and I confirm
Pink Floyd is Gold Experience and this tune is Made In Heaven
Only those who have good taste in music appreciate it more

Back in 2015 I faced the worst depressive episode of my life. My father passed away, I went through a bad breakup, didn't have much friends and was struggling with my career options as a college sophomore.
At moments I felt like ending my life, but would often be reminded of the struggle my mother would have to go through if she lost me.
I got "Shine on you crazy diamond" tattooed on my left arm as a reminder to keep going through this tough time.
Almost nine years later, this song reminds me of the struggle that I went through. I'm glad I survived.
Growth is real. Tough times do end.
It's weird, but I think this song has the ability to restore objects to their original form, and even heal people...

Good morning Elena how are you doing today
This song reminds me of the the tale my mom told me about how i caught a fever so bad that we had to drive out of town but unfortunately we got caught on a blizzard but a man with gorgeous style of hair helped our car to go again. My hair was fully inspired by that guy, and anyone that mock my hair will face the consequences. Love you mom.. I grew up without father 😅

Just very very wonderful music!!!❤❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤
Remember when you were young
And you shined like the sun
Shine on you crazy diamond
Now there's a look in your eyes
Like black holes in the sky
Shine on you crazy diamond
You were caught in the crossfire
Of childhood and stardom
Blown on the steel breeze
Come on you target
For faraway laughter
Come on you stranger, you legend, you martyr
And Shine
You reached for the secret too soon
And you cried for the moon
Shine on you crazy diamond
Threatened by shadows at night
And exposed in the light
Shine on you crazy diamond
Well you wore out your welcome
With random precision
Rode on the steel breeze
Come on you rover
You seer of visions
Come on you painter, you piper, you prisoner
And Shine!
Thank you!
Thanks man, not to be disrespectful or anything but I think it's: You reached for the secret too soon. The rest is great tho.

You have free will, baby… you can leave anytime you want to.
crearly crazy diamond is unbreakable
I'm in Japan too. Chin up man.

Listening to Pink Floyd is one of my very greatest pleasures in life.
God bless you and your angel

I listened to this for hours when my son passed away. I was never the same, I hated this world, I hated my life. I survived it, but I was never the same.
Al minuto 3.54 mi sembra di riconoscere delle note utilizzate in un film di S. Leone.
