Thank You
you got me
I will ALWAYS respect Tom Cruise's dedication to his acting!
I concur, he may be BS Crazy but he is a craftsman.
Absolutely, he even learned to do helicopter acrobatics and flew his own stunts for Mission Impossible, here's a clip from his learning and flying: ua-cam.com/video/6QtirIfi7sc/v-deo.html
@@wilsonle61 all geniuses tend to be mad af but we all benefit from there crazy 🤪
@@wilsonle61 yep, hes nuts but god damn can he make a movie
He may be bat shit crazy buts he's damn good at his trade
Top Gun was never about the story line it was about getting lost in the flying footage. I was on active duty when the first one hit the big screen in '86 and the whole squadron went to see it together. So imagine 40 "real" fighter jocks laughing and critiquing everything on the screen after leaving a "choir practice" at the O'club. We loved the cinematography combined with the tunes. Can't wait for the new version to get lost in the fiction and flying scenes for a couple of hours.
Thanks for sharing that, that must have been a unique and memorable experience. From somebody who wanted to fly as a teenager but then pursued other things.
I wish they had more flying and less talking.
You must really be fun at parties 😑
I think the arguments around this (and other) films fall into two categories:
1) those who don't seem to understand movies are make-believe. These are the people that insist the actors were flying the planes and doing all their own stunts, etc. There are just some people that will never grasp that movies are not the same as documentaries (and nowadays, even documentaries may not be as real as you think)
2) the uber-critical subject-matter experts. This is NOT directed at Mover. He shares the nit-pick stuff just for education and entertainment value. He still understands that movies have to be entertaining. That's why you get a scene where pilots jump in a plane and are firing off the cat or rocketing down the runway, because taking time in a movie to show a walkaround and checklists just isn't entertaining. But some people insist if it's not 100% dead-on, then it's just wrong or trash.
Sometimes realism is sacrificed for the sake of entertainment. That's why you see a movie-cop rack the slide before going into a shoot-out. It's why people rarely say good-bye in a movie phone call. And it's why you can see a fighter jet rocket vertically between two others with inches to spare. This is what people are talking about with "suspension of disbelief." Yes, it's fake. Yes, we know it's fake. And yes, we ignore that knowledge to be entertained.
If you can't do that, then you're going to hate everything and be a miserable person.
Well said.
Thank you Captain Obvious. Or is it Admiral Obvious these days?
@@ChevyC-hf6km Your comment would be funny, if not for the 10s of thousands of commenters like the ones he described. As such, it's just self-own.
And then there are movies like the great escape where steve mcqueen actually jumped a 12 foot fence on a 600lbs bmw motorcycle
That was also the 60s and steve mcqueen was a mans man, pro mx and race driver not just a great actor
realism is what makes a movie good. If you think showing a cop racking his gun before getting into a shoot out is good you don't know what makes a good movie. It shows the film maker does not understand their subject matter. Not going to make excuses for bad writing. As for "shut your brain off" i don't shut my brain off- your brain does not shut off, its capable of processing Vast amounts of information
I feel like your breakdowns have had more overall playtime than this entire movie at this point, and it's not even out yet!
@winterzz2004 wat? I don't think a real pilot who has flown real figher jets himself would be jealous of someone pretending to fly a figher jet.

Love it. Heard it from my brother.

mad respect for these actors for what they went thru for this movie.
Thank you for clearing up any 'confusion' about Monica Barbaro's gesture when 'starting engine two'. So she was fine all along.
This is one of the literal best channels on UA-cam.
I told my dad at dinner tonight, "If this movie isn't the deciding factor for me pushing toward an Air Force vs commercial career straight out of high school, then someone didn't do their job" 😅 Anyway as always Mover I absolutely love watching a Hornet pilot break down the trailers and movies. Can't wait for the Maverick breakdown (hopefully with Gonky) after the movie comes out!
Air Force?
@@Jester-uh9xg Much more likely to get a pilot slot in the Air Force than the Navy.
@@averyp.9315 Yep. I was 3 when the original came out, but seeing a few years later I wanted try and go to the Air force too. Being asthmatic was an instant disqualifier though unfortunately. The desire is in being a military aviator, period, not the specific branch the movies highlight. Would have loved to be an Eagle Driver.
@SorcererOne Lol. Well I haven't seen the movie yet and I'm also 15 with no college degree so that's kind of impossible.
I don’t know why anyone would expect Tom or other actors on the pilot seat and expect 100% realism, lol. This is a MOVIE. At the same time it’s bad ass that Tom actually put himself and the other actors in the fighter jet for hopefully better scenes with all the camera work they did, instead of doing it all with green screens. You just don’t get this kind of content on movies nowadays.
Nice reaction! For me as a former German military (SOF) I know exactly how fell. I have to tell the people that most movies will get you close to the reality, but it is still Hollywood.
Movies like Black Hawk Down or Act of Valor… are pretty close to the real deal… for sure!
I like what you doing and thanks for your service… I fought with we you guys in 3 tours in Afghanistan and it was awesome!
I can’t wait any longer to see that movie… 😎
I could imagine sitting next to Mover in the cinema watching this and every few seconds hearing "Fake.... also fake" 😂😂😂😂
7G's yeah I guess that's okay for an actor . . . I mean it's not 9G's but you know
Hell, I'd go see it with Mover just to hear him say, "Tomcats!" 😁
I appreciated your interpretation of the “Start 2” scene and the riser harness strap “controversy”. I had some thoughts about the actors walking on the ramp with t-shirts under their flight gear and thought they were probably in early training at the light prop plane stage. Gotta work up to full nomex in that heat, or you’ll have a bunch of unconscious talent.
It also turns out that the “push-ups on the ramp” scene is because those 3 aircrew lost a bet. So all you “I never did one push-up on the ramp” folks, just go to the movie. Enjoy.
I don't know about the story being worthy of a sequel, but the technology certainly is. I would have loved if these cameras were available when the original movie and Final Countdown were being filmed.
I thought this is what they did for the first one and my dad was like, don't be stupid they aren't in the planes.
So glad they did it this way. Can't wait to head out to the IMAX
@@ronaldkonkoma4356 But as I recall, they were really in the planes in the first movie, just not in the air though.
@@Riceball01 actors did fly in F-14s and production filmed them, but the quality wasn't usable for the final movie.

@@Riceball01 A lot of the in cockpit stuff was done on the ground in some kind of rig to simulate being in a jet.
I definitely appreciate the work they put into making this as authentic as possible.
Thanks Mover for this awesome breakdown. Really getting excited about the film, the first one was a big part of teenage years. Thanks again
As a 22yr vet of the army I am happy movies are made concerning us and our missions but only if done correctly. What we go through is hard, hard on our bodies and families and just our lives. So correcting certain things is necessary. I feel disrespected when movies coming out shortchanging servicemembers and what we go through. Thank you for keeping it straight brother
Loved your analysis, as usual. Spot on. I saw the first Top Gun the summer I went into CF-18 training. I still love that old movie, because I think it captures the spirit of fighter aviation really well. I can't wait to see this one. I'm too old, and retired now, but I still remember what it's like. Tom Cruise has certainly made a huge effort to add realism to these movies.
"i wasn't ready to make a sequel till we had a special story" is usually a death sentence for the story. Everytime.
Yea im not expecting an amazing story. Im comin for the action and the aircraft. So as long as the story behaves well enough not to ruin the aviation stuff...ill be happy.
Im open to being pleasantly surprised, though
Yeah
That and the line, we have such a sophisticated audience these days - in an action movie where the acting is as good as Rocky doing his TV commercial
I don't know, I don't take it that seriously. I'll take it as "I was waiting for a story that didn't suck outright and had some good ideas". I'm happy with that as a viewer. I love planes and Tom Cruise makes a great fighter pilot on the screen. It IS pop corn entertainment and escapism and I need that right now.
@@TheChannel1978 considering this thread, I really hope you're username is from Harry Hogg in Days of Thunder when Cole blows the engine!
We learned that this should be the movie we're all waiting for! I am equally as excited for the cinematography as I am the story line!
As someone who has worked in motion picture visual effects, almost no frame of this movie will be untouched by VFX artists. But, that doesn't mean that they can't go to great lengths to put actors in realistic environments wherever possible. Just does so much to make the performances better, where it's possible. (Also, this movie's certain to have a heavy dose of digital face replacement, so don't trust anything you see on screen!)
From what I've heard, the actors were in the backseat during the flight scenes. I'm not saying maybe there wasn't some face replacement, but I think a lot of the footage was them actually in the jets. I think one of Cruise's motivations to do this film was to get into these jets, lol. So I believe a lot of the footage is real. I mean, obviously no explosives were used, and jets weren't flying as close to each other as some of the scenes portrayed, but they did perform the maneuvers as if they were that close, and then editing and vfx would fill in the gaps. At least that's what I've gathered from all the interviews of the cast & crew, especially the navy flight coordinator (that's not his official job title on the film I don't think, but something like that). Anyway, just my thoughts on an old comment/reaction video. 🤷♀️
@@roshieifra Oh yeah, based on what they’ve said I’m sure that was the case!! They just didn’t cut that footage straight into the movie. It all would have gone through a VFX process to add or change what was out the window and sweeten the whole thing up visually. Also, it would be typical to add shots after principal photography in response to test audiences or creative needs that come out in editing, and those shots would possibly use face replacement or even a full CG pilot. As a rule, on a movie like this, no shot would be untouched.
I love how he is constantly destroying all the know-it-all armchair-pilots whom are always trying to tell those of us who have actually flown, what is and is not real.... never gets old :)
AKA: welcome to the internet!
That was the best part of getting ready to deploy on a cruise for me in the Marine Corps I loved Shallow Water Egress training along with Amphibious Egress training I couldn't get enough of it. that and Water Survival Course Fun Stuff. I loved it !!
I didn't do it as part of the military, but for a company I flew for in order to be on the list to fly to Puerto Rico from Florida. I enjoyed it a lot actually. We were blindfolded and then dunked and we had to take a hit from our portable oxygen and then swim to the surface, it was nuts.
4:15 🤣 the crowd was laughing at the push ups, definitely a funny moment
MOVER I AM SO EXCITED!! i grew up watching the first top gun in the early 2000s, 22 years old now and im freaking hyped to relive this childlike nostalgia!!!
F-14 Tomcat was and still is my favorite fighter jet, All because of Top Gun. Loved going to the Air Show as a kid and seeing all the fighter jet demos. Still enjoy the first movie, really looking forward to this one. I’m glad they made it.
It amazes me at just how large the to tomcats are! That's a big girl for a fighter...
Great stuff.... even though this is Navy as an old retired F-16 maintainer I can't wait.
Band of brothers in like 2002 had some pretty damn intense actor training. Not sure if its in the scope of the channel but it might be a fun watch. (There are only so many air combat movies) (also do 12' Oclock high and Memphis belle)
I saw the movie this afternoon. It was better than what I expected. Everybody did a great job.
Maverick should keep his eyes open when pulling Gs. Great breakdown and video! Glad to finally be able to see this one.
The SuperBug stuff was sped up too.. The FCS limits roll rate to 200 degrees per second. "Smaller people, with smaller tiny frames" had me laughing out loud.. Very diplomatic, Mover.. :D
Love the breakdown Mover. One point - you said that the mountain background wasn't real, which I believe is incorrect as, per the documents released by the gov't the film crew filmed flight sequences out of NAS Whidbey Island, in addition to MCAS Miramar and NAS Fallon; NAS Whidbey aviators fly through a MOA that goes through the Cascades, including North Cascades National Park. VR 1355, aka the "million dollar route" goes through terrain similar to the scene you mention, so they may have filmed those scenes while flying out of NAS Whidbey. Lots of videos of Growler pilots doing low levels on that route; in the winter, it looks pretty similar to the scene.
Now that I've seen the movie, I'm watching this. I avoided all the trailers and footage after first seeing the teasers two years ago.
Kudos to the actors going through some training. Not fighter pilot level, but to have a glimpse of what it takes. I feel the need, for...................
I have to say I could tell many many times in the movie they were sitting in the back seat....and not once did it ever spoil a single one of those shots for me. I will take real actors sitting in the backseat of a real jet over CGI/Blue Screen/Volume any day. That shot of Tom Cruise taking off from the carrier....who cares it is the backseat, that is one of the most amazing shots of an actor in a jet in a movie, ever. And I'm really glad that pilots like you can really respect it too. Despite some of the obvious flaws of the movie that you and Gronky pointed out (and were 100% right on) I think we can all agree that like the first Top Gun, when it comes down to the cinematography this just set a bar way way high.
Mover, Brazilian fan here! You did a vídeo on the gripen some time ago, but it would be most appreciated if you could coment in a video about the air capabilities of theJAS-39 Gripen NG, F/A-18E/F Super Hornet and the Rafale F3, because these were the aircrafts that the Brazilian Air Force FX-2 project was choosing to buy and we went with the Gripen mostly because of the transfer of tecnology and low cost flight campared to the other two. We already received 04 gripens out of 36 and the air force is to order 30 more!
In some videos behind the scenes of the movie "Rush (2013)," it was revealed that the actors
*did not actually drive Formula 1 cars.*
They drove replicas that looked like the real thing but only drove at a snail's pace.
Professional F-1 'precision drivers' re-enacted the historical and actual racing scenes.
This knowledge destroyed the entire movie for me.
At least we know that Mark Hamill actually flew an X-Wing in the Death Star's trench run.
I've done pushups on the flightline. But jarheads are weird so... Hey it was just a closeup FOD walk. :)
I feel the need...... the need for this not to be postponed anymore!
The original inspired so much of my childhood. I hope this one does the same for a new generation.
I am an old F-100 pilot. I have rarely commented, but I certainly appreciate your humble, honest approach in making all your videos. This is very e ident in this movie trailer review.
36 years.... I was 6 when the original came out im 41 now, I just hope this is good thats all I ask.
Worked in the maritime industry for 38 years and had to go thru the HUET training 4 different times and hated it !But, it was a very useful training experience. Love your vid’s and can’t wait to see this movie finally…fingers crossed.
I’ve only been inverted once and that was in my buddies Van RV7 doing an aileron roll. It’s an experience I’ll never forget and I have it on video that I show anyone willing to watch. Cherokee pilot from Pa here.
Dunk training is fun! But I'm an advanced SCUBA diver so I dig that stuff.
I loved this! Great job! The thing is people seem forget that it's a film! This isn't a documentary or home film footage. It's make believe! A story. IT'S NOT REAL! So it's ok it's it's not 100% accurate. IT'S A FILM FOR OUR ENTERTAINMENT!
I think people are getting hung up on the fact that the movie people themselves are trying to portray everything as real...
People already asking for a Top Gun Viper (Vietnam era) in F4's. There are flying F4's in South Korea and the US demo F4 so it can and SHOULD be done!!
I wonder how many of the new cast went on to get their pilots licence after this?
Have a little F8 rivalry in there

Really looking forward to it! I still remember the day I saw the Original, summer of 1986!
I did the helo dunker in 1989 at NAS Jax as training for a civilian medevac, I thought it was great fun. The red hats in the group, not so much. 🤣 Keep the great content coming.
Watched the original last week with my sons, now we're all primed for the sequel. I hope the story lives up to the cinematography.
the flying was the only good part of the first one. so it's a pretty low bar for story.
@@13christbane the first one wasn't complex, but it was still good. There were characters we loved with arcs that led to personal growth and a clear objective that we wanted to root for. Today's Hollywood doesn't seem to know how to do any of those things.
Going through the Helo Dunker, with a bunch of Marine E-1 non-swimmers was one of the most terrifying experiences one can have. When the instructor said, "don't kick your feet", every one of these guys heard, "kick your feet as hard and as fast as you can". It was best just to cover your head with your arms until they were gone, and then escape!

I am now wondering why movies are not having you as their advisor when it comes to realism..clearly you are good at what you do...
Mover has made too many people say "no" over the years. They don't like that lol
Your outro music is exceptionally awesome. You might honestly have the coolest "see you next time" cutaway on UA-cam.
It was reported that they had 800 hours of footage. Some people think this wasteful or unrealistic. I don't think either.
With 6 IMAX cameras in each jet, and let's say 5 jets were used...that is a little under 27 hours footage (which obviously the whole movie isn't flying...though we hope for the most).
I think this sound fairly accurate.
Your thoughts on this?
Saw this movie in the uk on release date last night. TG was my first ever movie at the cinema in 86 and this one gave me the same excitement. It’s just a great movie. I loved it
Look for an EPIC Top Gun Maverick Sneak Peak clip that is 4 minutes long. It is much longer than the same clip shown at the Top Gun Maverick Red Carpet Premier in San Diego. The Who's classic Won't Get Fooled Again (8 min. song) plays in the background. 200 push ups...for the loser of the engagement. The Sneak Peak is shown in theaters, due the screenings for Dr. Strange Multiverse of Madness. The only weird thing is the cockpit displays look very old (1970s-80s) with green symbology. No F/A-18E/F Block II and Block III color displays or helmet-mounted cuing system.
BONUS: Also look for a trailer for Avatar 2, due for release XMAS 2022. The plot is that the entire film takes place underwater.
The movie was great! I appreciate all the efforts they put to make the film as much immersive and realistic as possible.

part of me wonders if Tom Cruise was just kinda showing off but as a seasoned actor AND a pilot, he's got the insight needed to bridge the gap.
I think "most intense" is a bit of a stretch but it's very likely the MOST support the DoD has given to a movie. hell Top Gun is probably what got most of the current top brass.

As soon as I saw the video on UA-cam I saved myself to first watch your opinion on it. It is looking really good and kudos to the actors for doing all the training.
I wonder when the actors were flying the C-172 did they go all the way and get their general aviation license. If not I am sure a couple of them will be going back to finish their training once you bit your bit.
As far as I know, John Travolta is the only American actor who also has a pilots license to fly jets, actually does fly jets, and his house has a private runway on it.
Edit* Tom Cruise has his pilots license but isn't certified to fly the F18
I think Harrison Ford practically has his own air force, but I do not know if he flies his own jets (lots of prop planes and helicopters).
My man love the insight from a real pilot, and think it adds to it for me, you pointing stuff out that's not real doesn't detract just increase the spectical because in the end its a movie and for entertainment. Love your videos.
The Fighter Town USA is VRC-30 at NAS North Island...the mighty COD lol
I was in the Marine Corps and I had to do a lot of that water training as well, in case a helicopter crashed or the ship sank. I was also a member of a T.R.A.P. team
You’re awesome, C.W.. I really enjoy your take on these trailers and movies, etc.. Very entertaining and informative! :)
Thanks for the technical review, I alway appreciate your perspective because you have flown fighter jets, been there done it. If people can't appreciate that it's still hollywood and entertainment they should not go see movies. I have a top gun party booked at the local Cineplex VIP for May 28th. - group of us meeting before the movie and wearing clothing related to the movie should be great!
I'm a San Diego girl -- where the sexiest thing a man can wear is a Jet! -- I also went on to work in television as a writer. I handled even Military Question someone handed me, and LOVE an excuse to call Media Relations. (I really gave it to a guy named Custer once, he was finally laughing so hard he asked me to call back.) Anyway, the point being, I have met Cruise a few times and feel how you will, he is a dedicated military backer and an excellent pilot -- his P-51 was used in a music video for "Maverick". And yes, "Small Frame" is polite. At 5'9" I am taller than he is, and he does have a small frame and narrow shoulders, his riser will absolutely slip. But he is incredibly polite, helpful, and genuinely glad to meet you. He gave me the family pronunciation of their last name (which he does not use on screen) and was so happy to know he was a quiz show question. Believe me, when you tell the bosses. "Because Tom Cruise is out in the hallway, so I asked him. Then we talked about San Diego and jets." You are Teacher's Pet that day. I think about 9 of us saw them shoot the entire first film. Friend of Friend, got to fly as one of the Russian Pilots. They loved it. I love your channel.(and "Post" is when you add the CG. "Fix it in Post" is our favorite joke.)

Great video, Mover! Thanks a lot. Question: would you do a Mover Ruins Movies review of the flight scene in The Rock? It's Hornets doing air to ground. Brief, but a cool scene nonetheless. Most the mountain scenes are real and were filmed along VR1355 out of NAS Whidbey Island, Washington. I recognize some of the scenes as being on that route and they are definitely real!
Real does not mean there’s no VFX. The two are not mutually exclusive.
oh you want fly in a Tshirt? Arnie flew a jumpjet with a shredded shirt
Tom should have started with this clip a few years ago so everyone wouldn’t think the whole movie was just filmed with L39’s, then superimposed with Digital F-18’s. I’m much more impressed now.
I'll be at my local theater opening night pumped for this one.
