Tom Cruise joins BBC Radio 1's film critic Ali Plumb to talk about his latest movie, Top Gun: Maverick. He looks back on landing the role of Maverick in the original Top Gun and why he decided that now was the time for a sequel. And he reveals the iconic lines that people quote to him when he's out flying. Plus, he reacts to that Henry Cavill moment in Mission: Impossible - Fallout when he seems to grow a beard in a matter of seconds.

How many times have we seen a blockbuster show or movie ruined at the end (game of thrones for example) because they don't want to do the ending the whole show has been leading towards but instead want to shock the audiences and or change it to reflect some trending woke ideology of the day (Arya killing the Night King or Danerys burning Kings Landing and Jons storyline totally abandoned for feminism). Do the predictable ending, it's the right ending and what audiences want to see, or be creative with it and have some surprises but don't ruin the whole show because you think it's edgy to do some ending nobody figured out that makes no sense.

What's really beautiful about the character Maverick in TGM is how much of his trainer/mentor approach hangs on his loss of Goose. Not only does he overdo himself in trying to protect Rooster, but he insists that the training must cater to his teams survival. It is not enough to merely accomplish the core mission, but it's also important that his teammates make it back alive. Now, that's the kind of leadership that people will line up in droves behind.

Love that he still recalls making Legend with Ridley. So many actors can't remember half their films they've made and Legend was one of his first films he ever made.
Also, can I say how lowkey awesome it is that every time he talk it's like he's narrating his own biography.

What a perfectly descriptive word: -nomenclature- to use in your comment! Aside from being the pure truth & is such a beautifully genuine comment, would like to thank you for the intelligence you’ve applied here with your choice of such descriptive words that are too often substituted with slang and/or abbreviations, lacking accuracy & depth of thought, much less knowledge nor applications. And just as you’ve accurately reflected on Hollywood’s gauge of ‘authenticity’ or lack thereof, I greatly appreciate your references to even the nuances that can be the distinguishing factors that separate & preclude such genuinely artistic talent to actors/actresses views & creations. Tom Cruise is one of the few modern actors who actually bring a visionary’s perspective of transcending realms and produce it’s literal effects on an audience.

I didn´t expect much from the sequel, but little did I know it would make me feel emotional 3 times, the last one in tears while walking away after the movie ended.. so yeah it was well worth it... For me it was almost a 4 hour commute back and forth to the theater, but it was worth it! Nostalgia was way high and so it was also a trip down memory lane!
