Great interview! In 1983, Air Force pilot at the 426th Fighter Squadron, I was the Chief of Aerial Comabt Tactics and Dissimilar Air Combat Tactics instructor and got selected to attend TopGun school. First flight at TG, got my ass handed to me on a BFM 1v1! These guys are good! learned alot. 2 years later, I was selected to the SR-71 and flew that great machine for 4 years.
Thanks for that great interview Jocko

I was smiling and rolling my eyes at the corny ass rips from the original, but I still think it’s one of the best sequels ever made. It still has the right spirit, and was bigger. It was so cool to revisit after, what, 30/40 years, and see their stories wrapped up beautifully. Most sequels come too soon and shit the bed. Doesn’t hurt that Tom Cruise is a vampire.

It couldn't have gotten any better - a highly experienced top-notch Navy SEAL interviewing a real-life TopGun instructor - a fighter jet super pilot...Thank you, Jocko and David-absolutely an amazing episode just like all the others served to us by Jocko and his team. Wish our politicians were a bit more like you...Sounds like a wishful thinking, I know...Loved how Jocko was bantering David slightly ("Humblebrag".) David's skillset and resolve are mind-boggling and a very humbling experience to discover, as most people have difficulty operating a vehicle let alone piloting a supersonic aircraft loaded with sensitive and ultramodern technology. I cannot wrap my brains around how much actual knowledge, endurance and so much more it takes to just be able to fly one particular type of aircraft, to navigate and engage other skilled pilots successfully...This guy is qualified to pilot 4! types of fighter jets...Awesome episode-inspiring and humbling...

My dad was a missile analyst with Top Gun when it started. Worked with F-14 thru F-18. He got to tell them if it was pilot error, missile error or plane error. He spent 25 yrs doing this after 24 yrs as ECM/navigator in the Air Force.
My younger son watched the original movie so many times, it drove his brother crazy, but my dad enjoyed it, even if it was a movie. My older son got to go inside a TG meeting once as a kid. I told his teachers if he draws pics of bombs & missiles , don't worry because that's what his grandpa worked with. I went to see the new movie & got choked up thru out thinking about my dad & also we worked with family services all the time & you know what it's like when you lose a crew. BTW another anecdote -- I was an F-16 instructor at Luke AFB. We would occasionally bring a few jets to Fallon to fight the Top Gun students. The guys at Fallon run a class act and just the brief before the fight is the stuff of legends. My first fight was against a couple students in a Rhino and it was like shooting fish in a barrel. My 2nd fight was against an older and lighter F-16 flown by one of their instructors. An hour later we're in the bar debriefing the mission and I was the fish in the barrel, it's amazing how an incredible pilot can make a good pilot look plain-old bad (and I was in my main jet, the instructor who smoked me basically flew F-16s in his spare time). Great school and great movie.

Thanks for sharing that, Mike! It's cool to read these comments from folks who've been there. I've always dreamed of being a fighter pilot, but life took me a different way. I still fly in planes but they usually have Southwest written on the side and I'm simply a passenger. I've been considering signing up for classes at a local airport to learn to fly. There are a lot of people (like myself) who read stories like this in awe.

Flares can't stop a radar guided SAM. A plane at hypersonic speed can't maneuver. Why don't just use cruise missiles to take out that kind of target? There's a lot of basic inaccuracies in the movie. They could do the exact same thing on the movie showing the real thing, it seems that some people are just lazy to think about how to do it.

I don't really think TGM fits *quite* in that mold given so much of the movie is explicitly focused on Maverick's vulnerabilities, uncertainty about his future and his survivor's guilt. I'm not really sure they were trying to portray him as a stereotypical tough guy as much as someone trying to navigate both the march of time and his own life. In that sense it's a different thing than 80s/90s action heroes who were often... let's say, less concerned about character depth.
But I absolutely agree that it was a great film and the focus on practical effects was refreshing.

Underneath it read “I wana b a jat pilet”, and at that moment I remembered how much I wanted to fly jets as a kid. Throughout life with all the ups and downs I had forgotten that was my dream. I never did become a jat pilet and now it’s too late and it made me a little sad. @John Gallagher If you entered the service voluntarily and didn’t get a contract for a particular job, you end up on the ground in the front line. Is that what you did. Or if you didn’t have the intelligence to have a better job. Or maybe you thought you’d play GI Joe? There are a lot of dangerous jobs in the service, you don’t have to be shot at to have permanent injuries, disabilities, or even die. Why do you want to dismiss other’s service to our country?

Man what a great interview!! This man was very humble, EXTREMELY knowledgeable and I thoroughly enjoyed the entire video. I was lucky enough to be stationed on the U.S.S. Eisenhower, CVN 69 in the mid 90's and I can tell you that the movie Top Gun was EASILY responsible for 50% of the people being in the Navy! As an AO I got to work with the plane air crews and talk to several pilots when we were off duty and they said the same thing! The carrier scenes were AWESOME and definitely gave an idea of how a flight deck can be...organized chaos we used to call it. This movie hit EVERY button and some of them twice. It's been a long time since an entire theater was laughing, crying, hooping and hollering that way, and at the end a very hearty clap and applause...dayum I LOVED IT.

I went to the movies yesterday, without intending to. I am a traveling EMT, nothing planned. So I walked up and saw that Top Gun was showung. I aks of i needed to pre-purchase my ticket. The man said, no, I can sell you 1 right here. "And when does Top Gun stsrt"? In about 4 minutes.
I bought a ticket and sat down. After purchasing a small bag of peanut eminems which I placed in my bag.
The credits were over, the movie began and
I started laughing out loud right away. I felt like it was an exact continuation of where things left off.... as 30 years have gone by.
The movie exceeded any expectations that I might have had. I laughed and I cried. When I left, I thought wow I think I might have to go see that movie again. I can't remember the last time I said that if ever. Something about this movie struck a nerve and and trigger a lot of emotions for me. I'm truly grateful that this was not a remake of Top Gun, but a continuation with a lot of great messages. Yes one was the 1 that you mentioned about it's the man in the seat flying the plane that makes the difference. There's also an element of being true to yourself no matter what outside forces or others may think that you should be doing with your life.
Now I will continue listening to this interview I started and never finished.
🇺🇸🕊🇺🇸🇺🇸🕊 May God continue to bless your journey thank you both so much for your continued service.

Well that depends on your definition of greatness I guess. I mean being apart of an army that invaded a foreign country that did nothing to ours and killing innocent civilians and destroying their land. Being apart of that, If that's greatness sure .. now what they do post military can be the "greatness" . If you want to attach greatness to fighting war, look at the Ukranians .. now that is greatness. Defending their lands and people and fighting to the last person for it.

What a gigantic heap of bulls**t. Which war are you referring to… Afghanistan or Iraq? The former was a response to thousands of innocent office workers in NY jumping to their deaths and splattering on the pavement. The later removed a dictator and was universally welcomed around the world AND by the people of Iraq… until the Iranians and Al Quieda sent in insurgents to tarnish the victory, destabilize the country and embarrass the Americans. Don’t believe me? There’s plenty of accounts of the Iraqis, though cautiously at first, embracing the Americans and their freedom before the insurgency. Read Codename: Johnny Walker for starters… an Iraqi who disliked the Americans at first but eventually concluded they were there to legitimately help the people of that country and risked his own life to join and work with them. Face it, you’re a simple-minded f**k… it’s easy to just accept what you’re told and get back in line.
As for Ukraine, the Russians should’ve never invaded, but again… the simple-minded f**k doesn’t dive deeper into studying the subject. Are you aware of Ukrainians murdering civilians in disputed territories before the war? Read any interesting accounts of the Nazi battalion that the Ukrainians employ and tolerate as a “necessary evil”? Let me guess, you are complete unaware of the “greatness” of some of the war crimes they have been committing…

I hear that. People who have shown themselves strong in the battle, and know the battle, seem less likely to "need" always to fight.
One never knows, but as long as The Complex is so large and seemingly impermeable, I'm not certain that if a well-informed, well-intentioned, battle-proven, intelligent man/woman "got the job", that it would make a bit of difference at this point. Having said that, I'd vote for Jocko- maybe a write-in. Rogan for VP? They're both too realistic and intelligent to enter the fray.

When he came up with his energy-maneuverability charts and really changed how dogfighting was analyzed, managed, and trained, the experts at Wright-Patterson HQ were pissed off because Boyd came up with it instead of them. After that, they poisoned the well. They couldn't stop his technical brilliance and his accomplishments but they could use their influence to shove down his career and they sure made it a full-time job to do that. He was stuck for years at the Pentagon without really having a job. They kept getting him an incentive ride in an F-16 at Andrews AFB and then canceling it an hour before he was scheduled to actually go. They did things like that to screw around with him, and it was all just political BS, so lame. Had to chuckle at Dave Berke's talk about wanting to be in the military at 12-13. I was pretty sure I wanted to go into the Navy that age. Where he narrowed it to flying jets around ships, I went from wanting to sail on a ship, to being on submarines, to operating a reactor on a nuclear sub. Same progression, but one in the air and one under the water. 😎

Im so glad, the film was pushed back for as long as it was because it seemed like it gave the filmmakers extra time to really go back and check off those nuances the sequel does flawlessly story wise to connect with the original. ... But as someone who was introduced to the original when I was 6 by my Dad, the sequel actually exceeded my expectations in every possible way when it came to the Visual Aspect ,Sound Design, and characters. There's no doubt this will inspire a whole new generation who may want to pursue a path in this just like the original, and I'm super glad I watched this podcast after seeing the film because the film does an even better job then the original of stressing values like accountability, family/friendship, competitive spirit, treasuring each day, and most importantly showing how despite how far we've come in our technological advancements, we must never get so hind sighted and accustomed to these things which are just tools that can either benefit or take us back a step. . the greatest tool we've been handed is the mind and the power of the human spirit, the same thing which helped our grandfathers/great grandfathers get through some of the scariest moments in history despite whatever side they may have been on... we are all human and that like Maverick, there will always be losses along the way, its just the nature and duality of life itself which come to define us. .

Really good points dude. I remember being pissed everytime it was pushed back but it was worth it and you're right, there were no real places that were stupid or shouldve easily been sorted (baring in mind that it's a film, they needed to use F18s, with the fact China's audience contributes 70% of Hollywood's box office numbers they were limited on realistic enemies and so realistic missions etc) **SPOILERS
Just to see the F-14 back genuinely hade me well up. I love that Aircraft. My cousin became a USAF Major and an F15C pilot because of that aircraft (and I'm English, so it wasn't exactly easy for him let's say).
So... should they make a Top Gun 3 ? Or should we be immensely grateful we even got an incredible Top Gun 2 after the Death of Tony Scott a few years back (The English Director of Top Gun, Ridley Scott's brother and the reason Top Gun OG was even made and was so good).
