One thing I loved about this movie was that they made the mission so clear in the training sequences. By the time the mission happens, I knew where everyone needed to be, what they need to do and when. It made the tension higher when things started going wrong. Even a child could understand it. Was it realistic? I don't care.

@@jennyarriola324 , and we are need to take attention to that they were NOT servicing special coverage of the plane. So there’s stealth only on the paper.
As a former sub guy I’ll have to plug an SSGN as the weapon of choice here….launch a 50 Tomahawk salvo and do the whole thing undetected, no need to even put an easily detectable surface ship in the area. The carrier group in TGM didn’t seem too concerned with their own survival, so the enemies naval arm doesn’t appear to strike fear, and the USN somehow caught the enemy off guard (Enemy motto: “It’s not suspicious at all that there’s a carrier battle group parked right over there, so we’re going to send our on-patrol aircraft somewhere else”)
They didn't show the logical next scene, which is the Navy getting the hell out of dodge while defending against anti-ship missiles. Rather than celebrating on deck they should be shoving the Tomcat overboard to clear the deck since half the air wing would be on CAP anticipating a counterattack. But it's movie realism, so the heroes get their moment. As for Tomahawks, I mentioned it before but I think the attack requires sending a bomb straight down the shaft like a bowling ball in the gutter to get deep enough to take out the facility. I don't think a non-GPS guided Tomahawk could have that precise a flight profile. Of course if the bad guys had put a bend in the air shaft the plan wouldn't have worked at all. :D
@@apparition13 It's so unbelievable that there is an HVAC guy in Iran getting murdered by the Republican Guard along with his entire family believable. 😅
@@Heckleburger Not as unbelievable as the USN sneaking a carrier group into the Caspian sea*, since that's the only part of Iran that looks anything like Washington state. Of course the airbase coordinates are point Nemo, which is a spot in the south Pacific that is the spot on Earth that is the farthest from land, so it can't actually be Iran either. And if there is land there, I think the little boy was wrong about Maverick being on Earth. *Into the Black Sea, then the Sea of Azov, up the Don, across the (too small) canals connecting to the Volga, down to the Caspian, across lots and lots of Russian territory, without being noticed. Then sneak out again. I take it back, the conifers are the most unrealistic part of the movie.
Considering the promotion of the heavy cruiser Moskva to submarine in the Black Sea and the general ineptitude of the Russian navy, I don't think there's too much to concern a carrier group.
My gramps was a Navy pilot during Nam and his reaction to the plan when we watched this movie the first time was "Why the hell would you risk a carrier like this? Just tell them sub boys to sneak up, pop them in the mouth, and scoot away while everyone wonders where the hell the missiles came from. That's what they are for!" So, if it means anything to ya, gramps would 100% back your plan lol.

No mountains have a circular bowl like crater, except volcanoes. And a volcano would not have a crater that deep. And if it was a volcano, you wouldn't want to put your secret lab inside it. So basically they put their secret evil lab in a volcano like an evil villain cliche. Plus, it would have become a very deep lake.
Isn't diamond head on Oahu a crater kind of like that? Mt St.Helens is a close shape but has a hot floor. It could be a meteor crater(though a bit narrow) or the eroded core of a collapsed extinct volcano. (actually fairly common, but filled with a lake or glacier so yeah very bad for a secret lab)
I hate when people will just point out every single thing wrong with a movie but these guys do it so right, they are telling us what would really go down in the military while still having a love for it being a movie!
As a Airframe Structural Repair Tech 23 yrs retired yeah at 4.15 ish mark "and the jet is hard broke maintenance is now PISSED!" I can confirm structures and crew chiefs would be absolutely pissed and preparing for 12 hour shifts !
Can we take a second to admire just how much SA Mav maintains during all the SAM shots? He looks out the window, sees a missile in the air, identifies which aircraft it's targeting, recalls which pilot is in that aircraft, and then recommends a threat reaction. I can barely do this during ACMI debrief.
@@aaronlebeauf423 essentially Maverick exceeded the amount of G forces that Super Hornet is limited to by McDonnell Douglas/Boeing. And to put it bluntly, the maintenance squadron attached to that fighter wing is going to have to strip that aircraft down the the bare hull and inspect EVERY nut, bolt, structural member, wiring harness, exterior panel, both engines, and avionics for stress damage. (And a later scene reveals that the jet in question will NEVER fly again because of the extensive structural damage Maverick caused) As some of the actual Air Force and Navy Aviation maintainers have mentioned in their comments, this jet just went from Fully Mission Capable, to Hangar Queen in a few seconds.
@@digitalrailroader My question is, wasn’t that 10g move in that type of plane required for the plan? Aren’t all the pilots going to have to do the same thing in order to be successful? Or is it because Maverick chose to do it faster than the original 2:30 time as the reason he went that fast to caused him to reach 10g? I’m also not sure what the purpose was of Maverick shaving off 15 seconds from the original plan.
@@anti-ethniccleansing465 that is because it's a movie and the movie doesn't care about what sort of G forces the planes can actually handle. In the real world they wouldn't be making pilots do that since it would damage the planes and is not good for the pilots either.

Those surface-to-air missiles are indeed SA-3's, NATO name: GOA Both the target acquisition radar and the fire control/guidance radar are missing from the movie. One battalion has 4 launchers, each launcher with 4 missiles. The missiles are guided by the fire control radar to the target (not heat seeking missiles). One battery can attack 1 target at the time, with 2 missiles, only if the target speed is not above 750m/s Two missiles can be launched, with a 5 sec interval. A missile has a 70 kg (154.3 lbs) warhead and 4500 pieces of shrapnel More than 20 countrie still operate the SA-3 system. Cuba, Poland, Russia and Ukraine developed modernisation programmes during the years P.S. This same system shot down one F-117 and a F-16 over Serbia, in 1999
Yeah - Newa SC from Poland is what it looks like, way too old for the force that has SU-57. They should have used Pantsir(SA-22 NATO) or Tor(SA-15 NATO), and placed them at the bottom of the valley. How do you get those massive things on the ridge and keep them operating? No way. Also Pantsir does have cannons. Which is what should have been used as the range is too short. Also as the guys mentioned the range of those missiles is good enough to take out all of the planes over the sea.
29:13 well in all honesty if it’s an IADS and everyone is already taking missles that should mean that multiple radar sources are tracking each target so that could’ve been guidance from the source already tracking Maverick. What I love about this scene is after that little heroic stunt he was slow as all hell and paid the price for it instead of him magically getting his speed back and being able to steadily defend other missles. I love this part of the movie and I love your channel man great video! 😎
Can we all take a moment to recognize just how much attention to detail was put into the effect here when you see how large Dagger 3 / Pheonix is in the upper mirror in Maverick's plane? I mean come on, like you say...STOP FLYING SO CLOSE! lol Timestanp: 9:50

The frag on an Aim-9 is actually really cool how it works. Not sure if it's the same on other missiles, but basically there's a bunch of steel rods wrapped around the missile running parallel to the missile, with alternating ends welded to the adjacent rod (think of like chopsticks where they're connected on 1 end, then imagine a third chopstick connected to the opposite tip of one of the other 2, etc) all the way around the missile with the explosive running down the center. So when it detonates, all the rods expand out in a big "halo" around the missile, creating a huge circular guillotine to slice whatever it hit. I always just assumed it was a bunch of random frag, or the casing of the warhead was the frag material, etc. didn't realize it was that "engineered".
Hearing both of you transported me back to the Ready room. I was enlisted aircrew but commissioned as an 1830. The Squadron guys used to call me “the Ship’s Intel guy” which was a pretty damn big complement. Thanks for keeping it real and taking me back to the best and worst of times.

I also love how when Mav & Phoenix rolled through under the bridge, they did so in opposite directions, but when you see them come out of it, they are both going back level from the same high side. lol
You see Phoenix immediately roll left as soon as she clears the bridge though and then in the next shot she’s continuing to roll left to match Mav’s bank. Looks fine to me.
@@davidliu323 Correct, we have a shot showing Bob looking back at the bridge while Phoenix begins to roll their aircraft to the left. Then when it cuts from an internal cockpit shot to the external view again, their Super Hornet has *exactly* the same roll angle as in the internal shot (about 15 degrees right), still rolling left. Speaking as a non-military guy I've always considered the word "wingman" as equivalent to "partner" and to a lesser extent "teammate" and that at any point either guy can take lead and their wingman/partner/teammate will back them up. I'm pretty sure that is the definition used by the movie makers and also fairly certain that is how most of the movie audience sees it.

I loved the "if you know you know" detail of pulling the g limiter paddle on the stick. The filmmakers did do quite a bit of homework and it shows. Granted some of the HUD display modes are wrong but to 99% of the people watching the movie, all that symbology would just be complete gobbledygook.
This movie absolutely has the best fusion of realism, movie magic, and simplicity. The average movie goer will understand a reticle turning red means they have a lock for the bomb even if in real life it doesn't do that.

One thing I loved about this movie was that they made the mission so clear in the training sequences. By the time the mission happens, I knew where everyone needed to be, what they need to do and when. It made the tension higher when things started going wrong. Even a child could understand it. Was it realistic? I don't care.

E2 and Fleet are Getting an awful good radar track on those “5th Gen” “Stealth” SU 57s.
I mean I don't think the SU-57 has a very low RCS.
The engine nozzles are very big. The aircraft seems to be bare metal. The amount of nuts and bolts on the outside are insane.
That part’s accurate no? Su57 isn’t that stealthy
The Su 57 was never as stealthy as the Raptor or the F 35 in the first place.
If the radar operates outside the X-Band it would get a better picture.
Also stealth is the front of the aircraft not above it.
That's what they are for!" Can we take a second to admire just how much SA Mav maintains during all the SAM shots? He looks out the window, sees a missile in the air, identifies which aircraft it's targeting, recalls which pilot is in that aircraft, and then recommends a threat reaction. I can barely do this during ACMI debrief.
If you're still flying when you're 60, you'll be able to do it too. It's like old man strength, but with jets.

"...and the jet is hard broken maintenance is now pissed..." 🤣 as a maintainer I couldn't stop laughing at that lol
What does hard broken mean? And why would this happen in a realistic situation?
@@digitalrailroader yikes well that really puts it into perspective for me. Thanks for the explanation.

My question is, wasn’t that 10g move in that type of plane required for the plan? Aren’t all the pilots going to have to do the same thing in order to be successful? Or is it because Maverick chose to do it faster than the original 2:30 time as the reason he went that fast to caused him to reach 10g? I’m also not sure what the purpose was of Maverick shaving off 15 seconds from the original plan.
@@anti-ethniccleansing465 that is because it's a movie and the movie doesn't care about what sort of G forces the planes can actually handle. In the real world they wouldn't be making pilots do that since it would damage the planes and is not good for the pilots either.

Those surface-to-air missiles are indeed SA-3's, NATO name: GOA
Both the target acquisition radar and the fire control/guidance radar are missing from the movie. One battalion has 4 launchers, each launcher with 4 missiles.
The missiles are guided by the fire control radar to the target (not heat seeking missiles). One battery can attack 1 target at the time, with 2 missiles, only if the target speed is not above 750m/s
Two missiles can be launched, with a 5 sec interval.
A missile has a 70 kg (154.3 lbs) warhead and 4500 pieces of shrapnel
More than 20 countrie still operate the SA-3 system.
Cuba, Poland, Russia and Ukraine developed modernisation programmes during the years

They're titanium rods, not steel.

@@yxeaviationphotog thanks for the heads up. I wish I would’ve known that last weekend because I was in the vicinity of the Blues. Thanks for letting me know. I’ll keep my eyes open for whenever I deal with the Blues again. If you’ve got the Bunos, please share them so I can track them.
Gotta love the energy guys, this is arguably the heart of the movie and you do it justice - so many cool moments and you & Gonky do not disappoint
Navy figter pilots, the baddest MF's on the planet, followed by Marine Corps Snipers. 😎🇺🇸

What I don’t get is why fighter pilots are a Navy thing at all, instead of just being Air Force.
Back in the days, cold war era. Swedish pilots was doing low level high speed flying, they were training as it was for real. One of the pilots said in a interview, under his hold career he lost 50% of his team mates in training.
Watching you two nerd out over air combat is pretty awesome.
This was so much fun to watch. You two bounce off each other really well, more co-lab talking about other films would be great.
As long as Gonky's potato internet connection works. Otherwise we get lag and people complain that we're talking over each other. 🙄😂
People complaining = radar missile nerds
@@CWLemoine How did you and Gonky get your callsigns? Do you have a past video explaining this?
@@blitzroyale348 Mover has a video (I think it was a mover mailbag) explaining his callsign, while Gonky's story is still classified.
Very first video! Gonky's is not UA-cam friendly
Really loving this series, great to have some actual fighter pilot insight into some of this stuff.
Two fighter pilots geeking out over top gun. Tip tier content!
Im watching this "Mover ruins movies," for the 2nd time, and i love you and Gonkys reviews of Top Gun Maverick. You guys and Wombat make for some of the best videos on UA-cam. Thanks, guys. THANKS, GUYS, FOR PROTECTING THUS GREAT COUNTRY
I appreciate you guys. You two are pointing out things that non -pilots wouldn't have noticed & if I try to point out what you guys pointed out to anybody else they wil either say "don't ruin it for me" or to shut up I'm no pilot. Lol.
The sound of the flares deploying sounds like a better rate of fire than their gun sounds.
I know. Why couldn’t they have the “BBRT” of the 20mm? They sound like WW2 machine guns.
Really enjoyed both you guys commentary. Really hilarious to get the perspective. After watching the movie the first time I let the cheesiness blow by without much thought or care. But when I took my two pre-teen daughters to be a part of a cinematic experience (that we rarely see anymore), I realized all the additional explanation and dialogue of what “G’s” feel like amongst other rhetoric was to help the the audience that don’t know anything about being a fighter pilot get a sense of something that is real. Loved the movie, and really enjoyed all the parts of your guys breakdown. Thank you!
Thank you guys for your service. Thank you for the entertaining breakdown of the movie. It was great!
Might be most entertaining UA-cam vid I’ve watched in recent memory. Enjoyed watching Hasard Lee do a briefer review. But I sacrificed sleep for this. Got sucked in and couldn’t will be chuckling trying to sleep. Bravo gentlemen & thanks.
Nice! My new claim to fame is that I have ridden one of those elevators up and down. Couldn't even tell what jets were on them. Also done it with Australian MRH-90s and Chinooks.
Military photographers can go where just about no one else can. I'm basically Maverick.
Maverick not firing Mavericks is the greatest missed opportunity of this movie.
This one was amazing; love hearing you geek out over good comms, discuss the "what ifs", have a good time chatting about military aviation.
