I love hearing the constructive criticisms of this scene, but reality be damned, it was freaking AWESOME.
After realizing the plot is the same as star wars a new hope, I was a bit bummed. But yea idk if there's a more awesome dramatic recreation of fighter pilots in the shit

As a fellow fighter pilot for 22 years (F-16/F-22...and still going), I understand the critical debrief of the scene...but it was great to show my kids (16/13) how violent flying can be for fighter pilots in these particular situations. My entire family on my wife's side (based on leave) went to the movie and they kept tapping me on the shoulder to asking me questions. I agree of the critiques, I am just glad that the movie was what it was.
F-22? Holy crap. My dream is to join the Air Force. Funny enough, the Raptor is my dream jet, would love to hear more about your experience flying it.

the truth is that real fight is not so intense or amazing as it need to be in movie
Maverick went into the sun, quickly flew right around the world, and came back up behind Hangman while he was still squinting. Pretty good move actually, most people wouldn't think of it.
It's actually a maneuver that ww1 pilots practiced very frequently. The obvious flaw is that the second your loop takes you out of the sun you are visible again. And anyone seeing this maneuver has to do is lead their fire ahead of the sun opposite of where you entered it to hit you. And if you stay in the path of the sun, it means you are flying straight and all the other pilot has to do is fire their gun into the sun and they hit you. But it is in no way a novel maneuver that people don't think about. Pilots are trained to fly with the sun to their back as often as possible to keep enemies from being able to spot them visually.
One of the oldest moves isn’t it, WW1 pilots used that at times did they not

@SEAL CYCLE as the instructors said: they'd be wearing darkened visors that wouldn't blind them - put enemy between sun and yourself and pull trigger. Doesn't work in modern dogfighting.
You go into the sun so they follow you.. Brake and come up behind them. It's a tactic that goes back years

I love the whole 'Experts React' genre and especially yours. Some things will never change (spacing for the camera). But knowing that there is a very knowledgeable audience really ups the effort by filmmakers to be accurate, helping drive immersion for the actors as well as the audience. Spielberg and Hanks themselves said this about making 'Private Ryan' and 'Band of Brothers', and Cruise said similar about TGM.
Civilians sometimes don't get that a debrief or AAR is extremely nitpicky (both good and not so good) exactly because you respect your teammates and you want to continue to do it better while giving credit where its due.
The fact that you and Gonky and/or WOMBAT do these with humor and appreciation bordering on reverence at times shows that it all comes from a good place.
And at the end of the day, I usually come away with an even better appreciation for the film, so thanks!

My brother-in-law was an Air Force fighter pilot, and he flew F-16s! Callsign "Limo" because that's how he arrived at the Air Force Academy. I understand that military fighter pilots almost never choose their own callsigns, they're basically chosen FOR you and approved by your commander. "Bob" was probably the most realistic one.
This reminds me of watching war movies with my Dad back when I was a little kid. Being that my Dad was a Marine, he’d always yell at the tv, “BULLSHIT! That’s NOT how they’re supposed to do that! 😠” then he’d whisper in my ear how it should be done realistically. He even did that to me a few times when we watched Top Gun 2 in the theater this summer even tho I’m a grown ass man now 🤣
My Dad did the same thing, he had a hard time watching war movies😞😞
My landladys brother was a Marine Korean War vet and when watching Heartbreak Ridge on TV he’s like “they aren’t acting like Marines they’re Army!”
Ya, in any particular field not known to most of the public. It's frustrating for those in the field who watch movies about it, which basically prevents them from enjoying it due to being taken out of the moment. If it's bad enough you stop seeing the character, and instead see an actor dramatically saying non-sense lines from a script. It's annoying when you see that just a few minor changes would fix many things, and see the producers as not caring about those viewers who are the pros in the subject matter of the movie. As Tony Scott has said, "I make movies for people not fighter pilots". You can understand that to some degree if you see that at least the difference has some purposeful reason.
Yep, right with you -- my Dad was former Army, he'd do the same thing -- make fun of all the German Shermans in a movie, and "That's not how you do it!" I had a lot of fun with him ripping down B-grade war movies.
The movie Patton came out when I was 6 and several months after it came out my Mom my Dad and I went to see the movie. The Saving Private Ryan of the time. Well when Patton and his troops were trudging through the snow my Dad said to my Mom, not in a whisper” now Betty, that’s a d- -n lie, that s- - twas a- - deep” !!! Every one in the theater turned to look at him and started to clap, because they all knew HE had been there! They were all hero’s.
Behind the scenes, on the credits, there are a handful of navy trainers and pilots during the making of the movie. They knew what's right or wrong but improvised for the sake of entertainment.
I doubt they ‘improvised’ dealing with multi-million dollar aircraft. However yes, I agree that they balanced what those specialists knew to be correct with what the filmmakers knew was visually right for the movie.

Maverick's cockpit double was a Blue Angel pilot who specializes in low altitude flight.
They mentioned it from time to time. But being to realistic would just not be as exciting on a movie screen. How far apart you are in real aerial combat, and the training for that, would be too little blips on the screen. And what makes for a good story telling in movies in the time and pace for a movie results in them doing the chit-chat, etc.... If they made it 100% realistic, the movie would be 8 hours long, the audience would go back and forth being totally confused because they know so little about the reality and falling asleep from boredom cause there is no chit chat and dog flight looks like two blips miles apart on the screen.
Well, and Hollywood has along and storied history of ignoring experts because "this looks better"

Love you guys! You remind me of my dad! He was a Naval Aviator for 27 years, before his retirement in 1977. CO of VA-25 (A-7), Navy Acceptance pilot at Douglas for A-4s. He was my hero. 3 tours in Vietnam didn't get him, but cancer did in 2009. Honor, duty and the biggest heart! And he looked like John Wayne! I miss him everyday.
I love how real fighter pilots give real reactions to all this. My ex brother in law was a fighter pilot and I loved having conversations about flying. I never served, but I have so much respect for you all.

If UA-cam comments were in charge of a movie, there would be no such thing as the underdog story, there would be hours upon hours of people sitting around snarking and shitting around and none of the characters would be likable or have quirks. All in the name of realism. There's being critical of a film correctly (choreography, dialogue, progression, cinematography, photography, technicalities, etc) and then there's UA-cam comments, where it's filled with the most nitpicky people on the planet. Never, ever put your average UA-cam commenter in charge of a film, or entertainment in general, because you'll damn well know they'll do their best to make it the most milquetoast thing they could ever conceive.
Bigger people would always beat smaller people.
The human factor would matter for little.
Everyone would operate in the most logical manner possible.
You'd never get a story of a guy finding redemption or making mistakes and screwing up with a UA-cam Commenters moviemaking codex. They'd shoot it like a documentary and expect people to rave about how close to reality they are by being so damn uninteresting and lacking in scope.

I love getting your views on military movies! As a former Marine in rotary wing aviation I understand everything you're saying about safety. That was always the number one thing preached every time we flew. When Maverick does all this stuff that is considered unsafe I always thought is was because he never did anything by the book, hence the name. He's trying to get pilots ready for "mission impossible"
Driving by Moffet field yesterday, off 101 Highway with my daughters....we started to hear this monstrous sound, I knew what it was, but they had no idea. We all look out to the right, and two f-18 Hornets flying next to one another, sideways, turning over the airfield about 300 feet up, it was magnificent. Nothing like seeing, hearing, and feeling these beautiful feats of engineering piloted by the worlds best.
I was standing in the devils golf course, Death Valley during 125F..so the park is EMPTY. No one around for me miles. A pair of hornets ripped through the sky at low altitude, just like with you. Flew right over my head. ABSOLUTE PORN
Was at the air show in Chicago waterfront. Watched an F-18 come in and go vertical until he was out of sight. Awesome!
I think a factor that isn't taken into account is that it's Maverick flying. He's a frequent rule breaker. That's part of the premise of why he's so good. He bends rules when he thinks it's beneficial. I don't fly planes, but I do know Maverick disregards protocol (from what we are told in the movies) a lot from watching both movies haha.
Doesn't really make sense to break the low altidute rules. You can't go below ground in a real fight, why would you in training go below a simulated one

@@jussi3378 its a movie lol, it needs embellishment to make it engaging and exciting. The whole point is to make it stand out from everyday life while gripping you emotionally. That goes for any story, even non-fictional ones. Any story that isn’t embellished will be bland. If anything, its impressive that the movie had as many accuracies as it did.

I truly appreciate your constructive criticism on fact vs fiction. At the very least it's educational. At the same time, I appreciate the "entertainment value" they provide b/c it's a movie after all! It's a nice balance of fact/fiction (for entertainment) and you did a great job separating the two.
Yes. There are too many obvious scenes which would bypass the average persons notice. Like @13:29 the plane is in a hard climb, but the elevators are perfectly level . . . . .
I never thought about the canopy distance from the pilot but it makes so much sense when Gonky points it out. Touching the canopy without gloves so you lay fingerprints with the sun gleaming off the smudges when your trying to find dots in the sky seems to also be counter-productive.
My first thought was; why would he be smudging up his canopy? Situational awareness nightmare.

Exactly its not meant to be 100% realistic. Rambo wasn't but was awesome as F. Top gun 1 had many interested in joining the air force at one time to fly jets thats it

I really enjoyed this. Reminds of when I a kid (4th grade and up), my dad would break down every war movie: wrong weapon, wrong ribbons, wrong uniform, wrong term, "that would never happen...this is what they are supposed to do" and my favorite "that's actual footage". To this day I still yell "actual footage!" This was really good!😊
Realism aside, the movie was still really good and the characters were memorable. There were also emotional roller coasters and it really hooked you in. But still this will probably be the most realistic aviation movie for many years to come so let's appreciate it.

As a PC for both of y’all. I want to thank you for doing this video. 😂 The little details mattered in my heart while watching this. I called bs on all the flight scenes. My wife asked if it was real, had to let her enjoy it and said “real enough.”
I think they struck a good balance between realism, with the actual cockpit footage and what not, and then some CGI’d stuff just to make it look awesome for the mass audience. I think it would’ve been kinda boring for a lot of people if everything was just 100% realistic

For as unrealistic as Ace Combat willfully is, it's *so* satisfying when someone brakes like that in a vectoring jet and I just put two missiles into their top while they're static.
The ones to watch out for in AC are when they do it during a tight turn fight to bring the nose around, which is usually how the actual players do it - the flips to get behind or launch missiles from the front are mostly the boss AI in singleplayer.
He knew maverick was gonna try to bubble violate by flying at 2 feet off the ground so he knew to go into GMT Mav gave him the redfor gameplan what a great instructor

The Military pilots who make these scenes possible are awesome and the actors and filmography really make it entertaining, cgi has its place but when over used it spoils the effects. I really appreciate hearing the comments from actual Fighter pilots all the while keeping in mind it's s movie. Perfect.

Very good, I did enjoy the movie too, but you know when you watch it, the majority is overblown for effect and to make the movie seem more engaging to the average Joe. My guess is that while there is trash talking I'm sure between you pros, comments like "we're the best, who are they gonna get that can teach us" would never get uttered when you were in for a training session with other professionals. But sure the serious side of this job would maybe not play so well for movie entertainment.
For anyone interested in Military Aviation, it's nice to know the difference between actual flying and what's in the movies. Thanks for your work and what you do!
I appreciate many of the videos where an expert in a particular discipline separates fact from fiction. It's one of the reasons IMO that the story in film needs to be solid, so we can ignore the BS.
It's essentially a combination of real flying with CGI or spliced real bits when it's necessary to fudge distances (to fit the action in the frame). It's really good work.
In all fairness, Tom would have jumped into that pilots seat in a heartbeat if the NAVY allowed him. Have to appreciate how much he and the production tried to do everything they could think of to make it all as real as possible and the fact they are all in those keys is definitely enough for me. 🤙🏻

Even though Tom is a bit of a nutcase, he owns/flies a WW2 era P51, so he’s A-OK in my book.
My grandpa is a big fan of aviation, he seems excited when i either play Ace Combat, Project Wingman, or even DCS and just intently watch me play or comment sometimes.
I brought him to watch Top Gun Maverick with me to the cinema and wow, he said seeing Tom Cruise makes him feels 40 years old younger again (70 years old btw love him)
I was a plane captain for VFA 105, we had F/A 18 super hornets. They are badass aircraft. Truly incredible.
It's great that even the big criticisms show that this movie still tried to ditch Hollywood's stigma of not caring for accuracy
I agree. Once you distill it. I think the producers tried to make a movie with some realism. It had tons of errors. But they at least did some research on it.
Seem like a lot of people will pay for about anything these days. Take the majority of Marvel movies for instance ...
18:05 when Phoenix and Hangman were taking on Maverick, They broke different ways because Hangman wanted Maverick to go after Phoenix and then he would come from behind and get the glory, it's why Rooster said "Watch your back Phoenix" because he knew Hangman would try to basically put Phoenix up for sacrifice.
from an old Army pilot - thanks for the critique - loved listening to you two --- I just tell people often, "Hey, remember, it's a movie - entertainment - enjoy" ------ yes, it is a little fun for men and women who actually know what's going on but keep in mind it's a 'story' for entertainment -- When the first Maverick movie came out I took a Navy Pilot friend to ask him --- "Really? How realistic was the movie?" One thing he said that I remember to this day had to do with the 'salute' prior to launch off a ship --- He said, "Don't pick you noise - you be gone!!!"

Listening to these guys talk about some of these maneuvers really makes what groups like the Blue Angels do all the more impressive.
8:42. I think better comms would be "missile break left" or "guns break left" (reactions are different) followed by the defensive fighter calling tally or no joy. The defensive pilot would never call "breaking left", as that's self-evident. If you get a no joy response, you'd want to call a reversal or whatever directive comm is needed to get the defensive pilot's eyes on. Still a great movie. We launched from Miramar to the TACTS range near Yuma routinely.
ACM comm today is typically “break left bandit your six o clock 2 miles.” Directive and then descriptive. Guns would be a jink call if necessary.
And You're not going to find it. Paramount got pissy and it had to be taken down. The dude nearly lost his job. However it was a really good video.
I think the mystery red light may actually be the camera for filming inside the cockpit. They had to teach the actors how to work them and some basic principles of direction so that they could get the interior shots. It looks like it's in roughly the right spot to get the angle you see at 30:30
Wrong sorry. That's the middle back seat, the red light is in the front seat to the right. Also the shot at 30.30 was shot on the ground, they've said that already.

I said I wouldn't watch this movie until I made it, got selected for SNFO and decided to watch it. First time I didn't like it but 2nd time it really grew on me. Stopped looking at inaccuracies and focused on how badass the action scenes are.
Congrats man, that is awesome.
Really enjoying this series so far. “Ruining the movie” it’s a movie, an action one at that, 99.9% of the stuff happening in them is fake or impossible which makes them look amazing.
I loved the movie, even tho I knew it was nonsense all the way through, and watching professionals break these movies down and point out all the laughable inaccuracies but also finding those small pieces of truth, while sharing their own experiences is provably the best part.
“You’re ruining it” they’re not sitting with you in the movie theatre or next to you and pointing out everything wrong while it’s your first time watching the movie. You knew it would be a critical review, you knew what you were in for bud.
And now back to watching the rest.
It's been almost three years since we got Mover's first reaction to the initial trailer. It's been an amazing ride from then to now. Loving every bit of it.
The ending reaction that Gonky had to the push-ups comment had me rolling. Never found it that funny when I first watched, but in hindsight that would be pretty hilarious for the instructor to rub it in like that.
As for the visor thing, a lot of movies do that to show a clear difference between the “heroes” and “Bad guys” in films like these. With the good guys, you ALWAYS see their face with their outfits being colorful, green Camo, American flags etc bad guys are ALWAYS dressed in all black with faces not being shown at ALL. It’s a choice they Make specifically for plot

ROFLMAO. Thank you so much for that. As an army vet that WANTED to be a fighter pilot in the Air Force but was told I was too tall (this was back in 03-04, but I still thought it was horseshit) I really appreciate y'all's take on this. There are a LOT of folks that don't realize that just because the military is involved with Hollywood, that doesn't make the movie a documentary. There is a difference between Hollywood incorporating concepts vs what happen in reality. I have issues with Tom Cruise's personal choices, but as an actor he has a lot of my respect just based on the fact that he goes all in on his roles. I mean, it may be a rumor, but I heard that the military lent the Hornets to Hollywood on a discounted rate as long as the director made a promise: Tom Cruise was not allowed to touch the stick, because everyone knew that he REALLY wanted to. Let's be honest - who wouldn't?
Tom Cruise does have aviator licenses to fly several types of fighter jets, so I'm sure he was super tempted.

Maverick asking during training 'hey where's your wingman?' is actually him having learnt the importance of it since the original movie. I feel they had to have put that line in here somewhere to show the viewers his growth in understanding. That he now teaches the students the thing he had failed in in the past. I feel Hangman is the guy he can see himself in, hence why he doesn't select him for the mission.. later on.

My dad flew an A-10 and this is his favorite movie ever. Just like when I see a car movie like fast and furious I notice all the inconsistencies like why did they shift into 11th gear. 😆 I love this kind of video keep it up!

On a serious note, the Hard Deck and the gun pipper used the way it is in the movie are both most certainly things everyone making the movie went: 'This is wrong, but we're keeping some old homages to the original Top Gun'.

For the part about the plane being the worst “classroom,” I would just say from an Army perspective (recognizing fighting in the air isn’t the same as on the ground) that conceptually I have found that when the situation is stressful, if you as an instructor identify a potential significant emotional event from which to learn, then you jog the memory to drive a point home so that it does stick. Meh - different strokes for different folks! Even so thank you for this awesome reaction! I’ve learned tons!
They'd probably do the same, but what I got from what he said is they'd do that on the ground in the debrief, not in the air with adrenaline pumping through their veins and 90% of their attention being taken up with flying the plane.

We did. Many times. This is a series and part 3 of 6. We know it's for a movie, that's not the point.
There's so many butthurt trolls out there isn't there. Mover and Gonky are not saying this movie sucks because of x, y or z. They're simply saying what's realistic and what's not. It's entertaining, they've never said it's not. They're just giving insight into a world where so many armchair experts have no real clue about.
What I wouldn't give to be in the cockpit of an F22 or or F18. It's so badass to hear you guys talk about this stuff. My terrible eyes would never allow me to ever fly a plane, but one can dream.

The input from true fighter pilots about this movie is great. So many things Im learning about the rules, tactics, and the ways the aircraft would really handle in certain situations. Good stuff, thank you.
It’s great that you guys point out the inaccuracies in this movie, but also I think Hollywooding this movie helps the Navy recruitment. Any high school teenagers watching this movie with 100% accuracy is going to bore to death and fall asleep in the movie theater . It’s like sleeping in a history class during a documentary video and then teacher turns the classroom lights on and sees every with their heads resting on their desks.

There were some squadrons at NASNI. I can't remember if there were any F-14 squadrons (I served in the late 80s), but we definitely had S3, H3, and H2 squadrons. Most of the fighter squadrons were based at Miramar (when it was still NAS), and they would fly to the ship once she was out to sea. I don't recall us ever coming home with the squadrons still attached. We usually had an empty hangar when we were coming home. I was SeaOpDet, so I was on shore duty a NASNI when the Enterprise was in port. When she went operational I was detached from NASNI and became ships company. I was an AT and worked AIMD.

Thanks for the commentary. Much respect to the real fighter pilots! I live in San Diego, CA, one exit from the MCAS and hear the jets in the air all the time. I also lived in Jacksonville, FL where I heard the same jets every afternoon.
What I love most about your video is your reaction to the pilots banter. "Why are they talking. Just shut up." lol. Obviously a lot of the issues with plane proximity are due to cinematic reasons. It is better visually for a piloting layman to follow along if things are way closer than they should be. Like in most space battles in sci-fi shows the combatant ships are within visual range of each other when if a "space battle" were to occur it would be more like The Expanse and the battles would occur over much vaster distances. Still I appreciate the real world perspective that you both bring to snap us back to reality.

@@C76Caravan Yeah they pulled no punches in the show's visuals in terms of distancing and speed. Every battle is a "blink and you'll miss it" where they actually show missiles zipping off at 150g's and railgun projectiles smoking people at 10km/s.
All other visual sci-fi space battles seem incredibly slow in comparison.
Hm, this makes me curious about "The Expanse." I rarely watch new shows.
@@Tr0nzoid if you enjoy detailed world building, not black-white bad or good people, detailed sets, good or great VFX, superb underlying soundtracks, and physically correct displays of space and space battles, it will become easily one of your favorite shows.
One thing fans always point out is that they first 3 episodes are extreme world building with tons of questions getting setup, so some people don't stick though them... Episode 4 is often the turning point, so we always urge people to at least make it to and finish that episode and then decide.

so the pilot who was maverick (the navy pilot himself) said the scene where he went inverted was actually real. they were only allowed to do it because he was a blue angels pilot. now the barrel role over and over and over heading down, idk about that part but the inverted scene was real actually.

Loved hearing this breakdown. I am a pilot as I got my license in college. But I’m a weather forecaster with a FW now. Hearing them talk about this movie kinda made me appreciate it more. That some was right and not all just smoke.

I appreciate all of the perspectives from the people who do this stuff for real (and we sincerely love you and thank you for your service!), but movie-making, especially at this level, is a fine art, and the term "dramatic license" exists for a reason. We don't go to the movies for exact representations of reality -- we go for fantastical approximations of reality. Turns out that reality is often mundane, slow, and procedural. Movies are the afterburners of reality.
EXACTLY! I do love hearing the "this was right, this was wrong", but it's a movie. I mean if we wanted true authentic fighter work we'd all be watching the movie Stealth! LMFAO!
Seriously though, I 100% support these two guys. They do the job many would not or could not do. I thank both of them for what they do!

Really the mission for the movie would be a B2 taking off, dropping the bombs, landing, pilots bang their wives, but that doesn’t make for as fun of a movie. This movie was a fun ride if you just push the “I believe” button. 🇺🇸

I'll contend one of the most unrealistic parts of the movie was how *clean* the Rhinos were. Maverick's in particular looked JASDF-grade "you can eat off of it" clean.

Tons of call backs!. The "break right" over and over has to be more for the call back to the last dog fight in Top Gun than the tactics.

The coolest thing about this is that Tom Cruise got all the actors to fly for a few months (starting from small cesnas to jets) so they could adapt their body to the G forces. All the cockpit scenes were shot in the air and the actors had to also learn how to self direct and shoot. I feel like the reality and the CGI were well balanced, even though wasn't perfectly accurate with real life it was incredibly done and definitely set a new precedent to the action movie industry. These actors worked incredible hard and you can see that through the whole movie. Cool seeing you guys perspective 😊

If I had 25 cents every time mover pauses the movie
So fun story... when this first scene was filmed, it was at NAS Fallon. I was a Framer, detted to "Top gun" and this was around "1v1" day so we had an ungodly amount of aircraft out there for the big day... it wasn't north island, it was the ramp at SFWPD, and we were TASK SATURATED with or without a film crew. We (ground crew at TG) had already had some "interesting" interactions with the guys filming the movie, so we had some bias...Note 2, the pushup scene was filmed on the ramp outside of SFWPD with me and about 3 of my buddies, leaning against a "go" jet, next to the scene, talking shit to the actors about how unrealistic this movie is about to be, because nobodys ever done pushups on the line... Out of the actors, Miles Teller was an absolute gangster, (I actually didnt know he wasn't part of the actual exercise until the movie came out...) We all had some boys that were with the film crew, so we got to tag along (and get kicked out of) cast activities when they were in Fallon. Tom Cruise is a good actor, but he can kick rocks.
