My can opener didn’t work when I screwed in the gear “facing outward” as explained in this video at 2:08. If the can opener doesn’t work (still slips on the can lid) after doing everything explained in this video, flip over the gear so it’s facing inward and screw it back in so that the gear now sits closer to the cutting blade. That did the trick!

I replace the washer with a thicker one and that did a trick as well. Or some models you can add a washer. All three methods aim to make the gear closer to the cutter.

I came home to a can opener in pieces. This helped get it back together thanks. Couldn’t figure out where the spring went. However my can opener worked better flipping the gear out. So thin metal washer, gear, black washer, gripper screw. Thanks again.

Your video was suggested to me because I was on another channel where somebody said there was a video showing Millennials who didn't even know how to use a manual can openers. So I had to watch that! Unbelievable!! So I watched a tutorial for using a can opener, thinking it might be satirical, but based on the 875,400+ views & the comments, I think many genuinely had no idea!! I can totally see people not knowing how to FIX a can opener, but to not know how to USE one??? As for your video, it would've been nice to show which issues you were having (gears slipping, cranking the handle but not cutting, etc) & then how you started the removal/repair. But thanks for what you DID post!

For anyone having problems with this happening a lot, can openers are not two way. Notice how the handle is just screwed into the gears and stuff. If you turn it the wrong way, the can gives enough resistance that you're just going to unscrew the handle.

Doesn't a washer go between the 2 wheels? Mine has a washer. It won't go tight against can if the put both wheels together without a washer between them.

How old were all of you when you first learned that can openers need to be washed regularly and occasionally should have minimal preventive maintenance done on them? I swear my parents were terrified to expose any manual hand can opener to liquids anywhere close if it had more H2O than non-H2O. The oils didn't ever make their can openers easy to turn the cranking handles on. Sometimes they were so seized in position that the only way to get them to move was taking a hammer to the cranking handles to start them moving, because it wasn't possible by hand.
I am often surprised how many children have survived the majority of the parents we've all had some experience with.
