How To Replace Worn Treadmill Roller Bearings - Treadmill Repair

  • The bearings on my treadmill went bad and were making horrible scary noises. But my treadmill was still under warranty, so they sent me a brand new rear roller. I replaced the old roller with the new one. On the treadmills I had owned, it has always been the rear roller bearings that have gone bad. Looking at my current treadmill, a Sole F85, the front roller is larger and has larger bearings. So I think that is why they don't fail as fast as the rear roller bearings. But since I had the old roller with the worn bearings, I decided to have some fun and make a new video. So in this video, I show you how to replace the bearings on your treadmill. Afterall, when the warranty expires, you are the warranty. I bought the blind hole bearing puller I use in the video at Harbor Freight, but you can rent them cheaper at many places including auto parts stores. The bearings that were on the roller were labelled 6203Z, and the brand name was TMT. I searched for bearings and found many made in China bearings for cheap, but I had also read many poor reviews for bearings made in China. I found some Nachi (made in Japan) bearings on eBay for less than $6 each and ordered those. The model number on these is 6203ZZE. The Nachi bearings had many great reviews and are supposed to be good quality bearings. I am not an expert on bearings, but I think you want to get "deep groove ball bearing" type bearings for a treadmill. And also bearings that are sealed to keep dirt from getting in them.
I hope this video helps you repair your treadmill and keep it going for many years.

You are very easy to understand. I would never had thought that you could replace the bearings and not the entire rear belt roller. You helped me save money on this problem. I am handy but would never had been able to do this without your video. Great comment on buying quality bearings, as many are inferior quality. Thanks!

Great video worked like a charm. I used the axle to remove bearings “pb blaster and rubber mallet” did the trick. Also when I installing new bearing I used a piece of wood between the hammer and bearing as to not damage the bearing. No more noise and saved me $90 dollars thanks again.

An easy alternative to the uncommon tool used to remove bearings is a .5" steel rod longer than your roller from your hardware store. Slip it in one side and tap at the other bearing from the opposite side. Worked great

Great video. This was the last part I needed to keep my 18 yr old True 550ZTX - HRC running. For this model, the rod diameter increases behind the bearing. More effort to knock the rod out, but the bearing comes with it, so purchasing the puller was unnecessary. I used a sledgehammer on the rear, which like other commenters said, caused some mushrooming. A little grinding with a Dremel tool took care of it. I switched to a dead blow hammer for the front, and it worked like a charm. My treadmill took the NACHI Quest 6203ZZE bearings that I got off Amazon. Thanks again!

Thank you! Just replaced mine and I didn't need a puller. I removed both spring clips, tapped the axle through the bearing and used the axle end to knock the bearing back out of the roller. Same for other end.

shyflirt1, I just replaced the bearings, using your instructive video as my knowledge base, in about five minutes. The new ones are now at work on my treadmill's front roller and the machine is as quiet as the day I bought it, new. Not bad for a five year old machine that gets daily use of about an hour per day. The only other thing I've ever replaced on this unit is the circuit board.

Excellent advice! Our treadmill (Sole) sounded horrible and I suspected the bearings. The treadmill was still under warranty, so they sent us a brand new rear roller which we replaced. But after I saw your video, I understand that we probably will get problems again due to poor quality bearings. So next time we will follow your advice and replace the bearings with some that have better quality.
    Greetings from Sweden :-)

This is a great video. I'm somewhat knowledgeable, but didn't know the first thing about what'd be needed to replace the bearings on a roller. Great alterantive to full roller replacement, assuming I can disassemble. But no matter what you've shown me what's involved.

You can try a little penetrating oil. You can get another rod and tap it down through the first bearing. One you get it through one of the bearings it will probably go through the other one easier. Be careful hitting the end of the rod as you don't want to mushroom the end of it. If it's tight, use a wooden mallet, or cover it with a block of wood and hit that with the hammer.

Very helpful video, thanks. Like others, I was also unable to get the bearings out with a puller. I ended up taking the roller to my local auto shop where they were able to remove the old bearings and install the new ones (Nachi). The noise reduction was quite significant - probably better than new.

Good Video. Just a couple of things.
1 Never use a hammer on the end of a shaft. the shaft will mushroom over. Use a Mallet or wood between the hammer and the shaft.
    2. NEVER NEVER EVER use a hammer on a bearing. Again use a mallet or a brass hammer. I've known people to be suspended for that

The best bearings for treadmills are those with a contact seal, suffix LU, XLU I think, one side X, metal and the other side rubber, the LU, the rubber contact seal better isolates the bearing humidity, which is one of the main causes of failures in treadmill bearings

  • @gorbulas

One of the bearings on my roller had snap rings on both sides of it making if much more difficult to do this, and I didn't find this out until I'd gotten it out. I had to use a sledge hammer to whack the axle bar and bearing out together. In doing so it mashed the end of the bar I was whacking, enlarging the diameter at the very end which made it impossible to get the other end of the bar out of the inner bearing. I ended up using a bench grinder to reduce the circumference at the tip of the bar. The extra snap ring on the inside of the bearings I've now removed so I won't have this issue next time.

Great video! But... my treadmill is a Star Trac, and the rear roller (tail roller as they call it) does not have a visible C-ring that can be removed. There's a black cover flush over that area that I cannot figure out how to remove. 3 tiny holes around the diameter of the outer roller probably release the cover or the axle somehow, but I don't know what tool I need to "activate" those either. Ideas?

@RJTheBikeGuy do you have any advise how to get a stubborn rod out? Is there a tool or are you just supposed to hammer with a much larger force I felt comfortable with. I have tapped it quite a bit with a mallet, but it does not move much. The bearings still feel smooth once the roller is out, but after 7 years of really heavy use I thought it was time to take the noise coming from the rollers by replacing the bearings.

I took both front and rear rollers out. Any suggestions on how to get the inner rod out if it is very tight in the bearings? Any tips on how to remove the bearings without that tool? I'm thinking anchor bolts should work, using the roller shaft and a hammer to hit the anchor bolt from the inside after it is in place. But since anchor bolts this size are not that cheap and I would have to use one per each ball bearing removed, I'm trying to come up with another idea.

Generally, you won't be able to just cut the end off and slap a bearing on. I think many rollers are basically aluminum cylinders with caps on the ends to fit the rollers. Or they might just be machined tubes. You will have to play with one.

this was very helpful, thank you. But, this didn't work for me because the bearings on the roller were super tight (yes, I tried heating it for 2 minutes with a propane torch, still wouldn't budge). So I cut off the head on an old golf iron that I had, leaving me with the golf steel shaft. This fit in the hole of the bearing, so I used this to bang out the bearing. Worked perfectly.
