I made one 30 years ago at my first quilt lesson, had to make a log cabin quilt and two left over she showed us the chicken. Have used it as a pin cushion for 30 years! Still going strong and my grandchildren love it!

I saw these 25 years ago when a friend went to Norway, she brought back the pattern with her!

My quilting buddy was generous to all of us quilters and she made several little chickens. I now only use this little chicken instead of my "strawberry" pincushins, and I love it. Thanks, Shar for this tutorial. And thank you, Karen, for your generousity.

Thank you for keeping the mistake in the tutorial rather than retaking the scene. ..we learn more from mistakes and the lesson is clearer.

i have a pattern i begged my grandmom to get me around 1997. I never used it! just hoarded it all this time. it's amazing that the information that once was disseminated for $8 ($12 today money) is freely available on youtube. but i still treasure this little pattern in the plastic bag. no publisher, no website. just a lady's name and some instructions xerox printed single side. it reminds me of a simpler time. and i was always too intimindated to learn how to make the chickens. but with these videos, i'm sure i can try.

The pin cushions are so much fun to make.
They make great gifts and bazaar items.

Crushed walnuts can be found at a pet supply store. They are used on lizard aquariums.

How did you cut and make the comb and beak? How did you sew them in? You just shown that was ready sown in already. You were much detailed about the body and the tail. Nothing on the beak and comb. Or did I miss it? I love the project just missing that one area.

Tanya Avila I was wondering the same thing. I think the comb was out of felt. I guess just free form cut. And the beak looks like a small prairie point.
