Thank your for a great tutorial! I bought some crushed walnuts on Amazon and on the container it says, “Walnut Shell blast and tumble media”. It’s a 12-20 grit. I’m very happy with it. I loved your story about trying to crush them!😊
Katherine, you're bloody great!! Its 6.30 am here in New Zealand. Im parked up in bed with my dog's and coffee watching your channel. Your relaxed chat and humour making me smile often. And your stitched thingies are glorious! Cheers muchly . Zig, Berty and Bear❤
Loved this tutorial. I made my biscornu pin cushion this weekend. I added a circle decoration on the top, which is for me to put my needles in that section to keep them separate from the pins. Works really well.
Hi Katherine, Thank you so much for inspiring me to have a go & relax & do some hand stitching as I always use my machine. I sat & sewed along with you & loved the finished result. Shame I don't have any friends that sew as they'd make such a sweet gift! (perhaps it's time to widen my friend circle!!)😄🥰
Wow, I’m over 60 years old and I have never seen a pin cushion sewn like that before - I love it! Later today I plan on making one a bit larger for my long quilting pins. Tfs
I made pin cushions one year for holiday gifts. I bought a small bag of crushed walnut shells at the pet store. I guess it's used as bedding for some pets.
This is such a clear and inviting how-to video visit; I was able to make two very satisfying biscornu (s? Biscorni?). Many thanks for sharing your experience and passion for Making beautiful and useful items.
Lovely ! At least here in the US crushed walnut shells are available very inexpensively at any pet store. They are used as reptile bedding .Can't wait to try this project !
I purchased a 2lb bag of crushed walnut shells at a pet supply store in the canary aisle. They are used in the bottom of the cage for birds to scratch in. I filled my pin cushions by spooning the crushed shells through a small funnel.
Just discovered your videos, and I can't get off them. I am in awe of everything you do,as well as your very lovely calming voice, which is a pleasure to listen too..........Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.🙂
😁 I read your previous comment before I went to bed and woke up this morning to read this. Wonderful to think of you beavering away on your pin cushion while I slept over here on the other side of the planet 🤣🥰❤️
Oh, we had a great time. We decided to use the same cloth for each cushion so they would be sister cushions. I watched your twine making EXTRA video to day and darn! I got! Yay Me!!! I made the most beautiful blue and yellow twine ( only about a foot long) I pretty much got only half the length of my original cloth strips. I’m looking for cloth that will work for my purple bottom of the cushion and the printed top to make the cushion ‘s basket. Sister and I went to a thrift store yesterday. We scored! Got several pieces of cloth, I got one silk scarf witch I cut four different pieces I stitched together for or third week project. We stopped at a quilting shop and I found little appliqué pins for $7.00. Everything in that shop was ridiculously priced. Well, if there is something one must have I’m certain they have it. I so appreciate you spending time and labor for all of us. As a child I sewed with my mother and grandmothers. The projects you make for us bring back wonderful memories. THANK YOU!❤
Hi Kathryn, I have decided I do need to make a biscornu pin cushion after all. Getting the squares the same size will be the biggest challenge I think.😉Lol Thanks for sharing. love Bella ❤❤
I just discovered your channel about two weeks ago. At the end of October I started to crochet, and not that I'm bored, but I'm diving into the slow stick world. I just finished the pin cushion and I'm ready for a few more projects. I'm so glad you popped on my feed.
Great use of a few items - your tutorials are ALWAYS a pleasure to watch!! You give great tips/advice!! Thank you for taking the time to create your wonderful videos👍🏻🙌🏻💕🤗🤗👏🏻!!
I have so enjoyed watching and listening to you today! I have been hand sewing on a gift for my sister. I am now a new subscriber and thankful to have you come up on my feed. Oh, I see you are about to reach 40,000 subscribers, that's great. Sure you'll be getting plenty more you don't have that annoying music, you are interesting and explain things clearly. Thank you I look forward to watching many more videos of yours! Blessings.
Wow! Google Biscornu ( a french word meaning quirky, skewed) and look at the images. The embroidery designs are just beautiful. Thanks for showing me this pincushion pattern. 😊
Thank you for sharing this with us. I have been wanting to make some of these. I love how you call them " good Lad ." I found it reassuring, I'm not the only one that talks to my projects. You explain and demonstrate very well. I appreciate the simplicity of the design. Thank you again. Have a blessed holiday season. 😊❤❤
That was fun, I posted mine on Facebook. Now I want to make a pillow that way...or cushion as you say across the pond. I'm a quilter and stuff my things with thread and fabric bits, I always have a basket full. Thanks, Gloria

Hi k3n. I love long 'boring' stories on youtube. I watch videos while knitting 'boring' easy knitting patterns (just because I want to have that all stocking stitch sweater ...). I do like them to be on an intersting subject, like nature/wildlife or some hand craft technique. I don't like them to be only a quick tutorial, because then I have to click some buttons to go on with the next video ... 😉
Hi ,thoroughly enjoyed this video and in fact I quickly grabbed my fabrics and got everything ready to sew along with you. I now have a beautiful Biscornu Pin Cushion in two glorious christmas fabrics to remind me when I made it. I have two wooden heart buttons in the centre. I love it and will definitely make more. Your instructions were perfect. Thank you so much from Karen xx
This excellent tutorial came up early on our Thanksgiving Day 2023 here in Washington State USA….it made me so happy as a newbie to slow stitching…..I want to jump right in…..but unfortunately I have 10 for dinner and “busy hands are happy hand”…..so I will return again to watch as You have done such a great job taking away a bit of the mystery……Blessings
Here in the us we use lizard litter which is I believe walnut shells. It is pretty cheap and you get it from a pet store or online. Works great for pincushions. Hope this helps.❤

I have made pin cushions stuffed with crushed walnut shells, it came from a pet shop, I think it’s used in fish tanks? It comes in rather large bags so I have enough to make as many pin cushions as I could ever want and still some to bequeath after I’m gone! But it does make great pincushions, it’s very fine so you need tight seams to keep it all in or I make a little pouch for it and stitch it on the machine, then put it in the pin cushion and fill any gaps with normal stuffing! ❤
What s lovely and simple idea. I am inspired to have a go at making one for myself! Just need to get some stuffing and like the idea of the steel wool to help keep needles and pins sharp! 😊
I really, really enjoyed your video - you speak English, with an English accent! Much, much better than American accents! You also talk to yourself - I felt quite at home! I have fine sand in my pin/needle cushion - stolen from my granddaughters sand pit! - make sure it’s well dried out before you stick sewing accoutrements in!
You can use Garnet Sand, (Crushed Garnet Crystals) as pin cushion filler. It sharpens pins and needles when you push them in and the weight is really nice to have for a work surface pin cushion. I’ve made a few of the large strawberries with garnet sand. I can’t wait to make a Biscornu Pin Cushion, maybe a garnet ‘button’ in the center will work for sharpening. The Garnet Sand is easy to find online, eBay etc.
I love pin cushions. This one did not jump out at me at first, but it started to grow on me and when I saw the little saucer made from hand made rope I thought I am going try to make one. Starting with small projects may help to practice my hand sewing. x Blessings x Mariana UK xx
I have noticed those pin cushions on your table or desk. I think that they are so unusual and beautiful. Thank you for the tutorial! I do plan on making one. I watch your videos and just subscribed. I’ve just made mine, and the twine with which I’m going to make the adorable little basket. Everybody I know is going to get one of these for Christmas. Is there an easy way to cut out a square of cloth? I ended up cutting around a cocktail napkin 😂
Finally made one of these … the shape looks so cool, but it’s really quite simple …. I have some ground walnut shells I bought on Etsy years ago, it seems. Just in time, too. I’ve had one of those Chinese circles with the characters all around holding hands, and the satin on the top is finally wearing through, so I can’t tip it over. I may go up to a 6 or even 7” square and make it two tone like you did, because I keep tons of needles and pins in my little Chinese cushion. Maybe time to make a needle case with specific page for the different sizes I use, because the two flap one I have won’t hold much, and I like loading up my needles, say 10 at a time so I’m not fiddling with it. Thank you again, for sharing this beautifully shaped pin cushion
I've got a small jar of silicone grit to make a pinchcushion which is supposed to prevent rust which is a big problem for me in this humidity in far north Queensland.
Hi Kathryn, greetings from OZ 🇦🇺😎 I love this pincushion !! I am attempting to make one as I watch your vid (3rd watch-thru)🤣😂 Wish me luck !!! Great tutorial TFS 🤗🤗
Maybe baking the walnut shells to dry them out a bit, it may make them more brittle, and that might help with the crushing. I've never tried it but just an idea 😊 love your channel btw, I have been working my way through your videos and love them ❤️
Thank you, I did bake them but still tough as old boots 😜 I have given up on the idea, I will just use them for dyeing instead. And welcome, lovely to have you here ❤️
@k3n.clothtales Ahh cool 😄 you have to wonder how they grind them down then 😄 thank you for the welcome and I've just finished making my little Biscornu Pin Cushion and have now started making the twine for the saucer part 😀. My mother always put steel wool in the middle and wrapped it with cotton stuffing. She said the steel wool help to keep the needle sharp.
Yes this is what I was taught as well 😊
That's a good idea, maybe for this one, shape the steel wool into a ring so it's easier to sew the button through the middle 😉😊

Lovely! Will have to make some. I really like your red fabric.
A friend just gave me some raw wool, so after washing it, will use it for the stuffing.
Love that you say 'some' 😁❤️
This is so cute, I got excited about it, and had to make one too. I love your instructions.
Thank you, I am glad I am not the only one to get excited about such things 😁

Thanks so much, I just discovered you.😊
My pleasure, welcome 🤗
I honestly have no idea how I stumbled on your channel but it's an absolute treasure 🥰 thank you for taking the time to teach others you are very refreshing. I really appreciate you 🥰
