Wouldn't it be glorious if, the next time someone made a movie set in the medieval period, they spent the money and time to render 3D, fully textured, carefully animated CGI animals based on this kind of art, and use them in place of real animals? No one in the movie ever mentions it; this is just what animals look like in their world. And none of the shots in the trailers feature the animals, so it's a bizarre surprise.
One thing I’m glad you brought up is the fact that drawing an animal you’ve never seen is hard. Especially when you’re being told what it looks like from someone who only heard of it. Lots of animals were formed from folk lore and thus was over exaggerated. Best example of this is an elephant. Description of an elephant: It has 4 legs, and each foot has no toes, but 2 toe nails. It is large enough to walk through buildings if it wants. No one can mount it alone. It has ears it flaps when bugs come near it. The ears are also gigantic. Along with that, it has two curved spears coming from its mouth that stick out 1/2 its body length. It has no arms or hands, but its nose is nearly the length of its body and can be used like a hand to grab stuff. That’s all from someone who’s seen an elephant. Imagine hearing that, and then explaining it to someone. You might get some features right, but it isn’t going to be an accurate telling.
Sire, sire! I must relay the description of a beast the recent travelers had encountered. It is a beast of gargantuan size, as big as a building standing on four towering legs. It has blades protruding from its face half as long as it is wide! It has ears that flap like sails on a ship and it uses its long nose as a hand!
You gotta admit tho, the medieval painter ppl were talented. They mightntve known what an elephant looked like, but dang could they paint rabbits. Fr I couldnt possibly draw that that good. I wonder if theyd plagiarize rabbits from other books. Like copy them for reference lol. Idk. :3
0:40 That warhorse is probably closer to 50 POUNDS. That 50 shilling is probably from the hodges list, which used The knight in history by Frances Gies in 1984, who in turn used sources ranging from late 19th century to mid 20th century, all citing eventually the same source, historiarum libri quinque from rudolfi gabri, which is semi-famously mistranslated.
I heard that the rabbits and snails were symbolizing knights which does not follow they code by being to slow to response to a attack or run away when the fight was still indecisive.
Those cow paintings remind me of a sculpture my grandmother has of a cow that looks ABSOLUTELY CHONKY from the side, but when you saw it from the front it looked like it was squashed into a pancake. I love that statue its so goofy. And thats how i imagine those cow paintings to actually look like
My friends and I used to play a lil game where me and my friends had to look at an image of a medieval depiction of an animal and guess which animal it’s supposed to be
A doodle youtuber asking if illuminated manuscripts are art is ironic. My sister in Christ, you ARE making illuminated manuscripts. Look around your desk, stuck in your cell working under the monitorlight not unlike a monk under the candlelight, making silly drawings to surround and ilustrate the knowledge you're sharing. You're both incredible artists, Sister Poopie, may humanity never stop making silly drawings on the margins of knowledge.
So basically they drew animals in a silly way because they were tired
Seems like a regular artist for me

Really? In what?
@THATGuy5654 All of my yes! : D
The closest thing I can think of is “the secret of the Kells” where the whole thing is animated to look like an illuminated manuscript
oh to be a rabbit drawn in medieval time

Art peaked at drawings/paintings of chonky livestock.
They would've loved Fat Chungus, both a fat and quirky rabbit.
My drawing ended up looking like a mix between a shrew, a possum, and an inverse skunk.

1:57 I want to make a religion where we do nothing that isn’t supported by daily social media headline science
so they're essentially the monks' doodles in the margins.
The “fictional” animal you described is literally a naked mole rat. I drew a naked mole rat
omfg me too
1:19 now i understand my lack of artistry
“Over-worked and under-fucked,” I’ve never felt more heard

I personally call it the "trust me bro, I know how a (insert animal) looks" effect. Love going through galaried with that mindset
I inserted your description to AI picture generator
And results were pretty nice mutants and random anime catgirl
I think catgirl is correct result ;3
😶
I've seen a few videos of yours, and you have a very pretty voice and art style, already subscribed
Poopie. It’s been eleven months. When are we going to get the show hosted by that thing? We need to see it host the show. We need it.
