- Motorsport runs deep in NZ culture, so we met up with the Hutt Valley Motorsports Club at Manfield Park to test some of their best homebrew track cars.
Jared Rush's 1984 Toyota Trueno AE86 is a fine example of what can be achieved on this platform with excellent backyard engineering, and is crazy fun to slide in the wet!

That car may have the best horsepower to smiles ratio of all time.
One may call it "Smiles per gallon!"
*****
Best car term ratio
***** :DDDD
It's definitely between this and the NA MX-5!
I could not agree more. I challenged my friends to watch this without smiling... Resulted in complete failure. ^_^
That is so fuckin' rad it's ridiculous. I'm telling you man, small cars with a bit of horsepower and a light body are so much fun it's crazy. The people who chase the big HP all the time really miss out. Those are a little slice of heaven.
Really enjoyed this vid!
***** Power to weight.. it is a golden ratio that some forget.
I don't think we'll have cars as pure/analog as this anymore unfortunately. With all these regulations its impossible
wobbly sauce For sure man. It's so rare to come across cars like this anymore. as Wade18 says. With crash test safety and emissions the cars are huge and bloated now. The engines don't revv out as much either (electronic control, governed and limited) no more free revving. Everything is very dull. No excitement anymore. :(
Back in the 90's you could buy these cars cheap and drive the piss out of them and they'd go forever. 300,000km+ easy. These days your car will go 100k before something happens. Damn shame really.
wobbly sauce Power to weight is not the whole truth. 10% less weight is better than 10% more power, because less weight improves many things not only power to weight ratio.
Benedocta To gain that 10% power.. you normally add weight.
There are only a few things out there that make power and save weight.
*eurobeat intensifies*
Paul Mares DEJA VU IVE BEEN IN THIS PLACE BEFORE
HIGH UP ON THE STREET
KayyBinn i think they said higher on the street
EXENOX yea i realize that now. Now if youll excuse me im gonma go watch initial d
KayyBinn nice i finished it already but nice
I would do some crazy sht for an ae86 and this guy gets one cus his mate owes him 50 bucks?
fck me man...
Times before drift tax
that car are u kid me i had3 of those and sold them all for 1500
well congrats you got ripped off. lol
Harold Shmanlon also got an escord mk2 whey beter than this shit
''better''
I really want an AE86 Trueno
You and everyone else. :)
***** Nope. Not really ringing my bells that much. I would take most 3 series with a locking diff over this thing ^^ And most 3 series are waaay cheaper too because the AE86 are completely overrated on the market.
So you could get a NICE M3 for the price of a clean AE86.
Benedocta and with the money you spend maintaining and building any M3 you could have 2 nice 86's. 3 series are cheap for a reason
anon1561 Yeah thats because the AE86 really is an economy car. Obviosly, a BMW is more expensive to maintain. But if you spend 10k less on a way nicer BMW, you can maintain that thing for ages.
Benedocta It's not that way in NZ - a E30 M3 would be $20,000+ here - an AE86 JDM maybe $12,000. Japanese cars are cheap and easy to find and get parts for & find knowledgable people here, BMW's are expensive and hard to maintain - plus the E30 is really a pretty poorly made car - most of them have serious chassis problems after all these years. A mate of mine had a tidy low k's 320 that he dropped a 1UZ-FE into, wasn't long before the chassis welds started to give up, and pretty much everything inside started coming loose and rattling like crazy - it just couldn't handle being driven hard. He sorted it out and then sold it on and bought a Soarer. M3's might be better built, I don't know.
I drove a genuine AE86 Trueno GT Apex last week on the actual Mt. Haruna road and can honestly say it's the best car I've ever driven. It was slightly modified - had an LSD & AE101 bottom end, but no car has made me feel that 'connected'. It was unforgettable and is everything that befits the legend & more.
"YOINK" *Begins Drift* LOL that was awesome! Looked like a Blast Matt!
You should get an ae86 teej
Bunta Fujiwara disliked that handbrake drift =P!
Lol
Because it is not a drift but a powerslide
I never saw you that happy , i think that says alot about the car. great video.
Never seen Matt having so much fun.... it ain't about the power - the A86 - the legend lives on!
I must say, the Automations really really did marketing right. Kudos to them. Plus, they have a great product. That helps too
I love it, but lets say it still has loads of potential!
Benedocta For sure, we're still got years of work left to make it as good and finished as it can be :)
6:46 I do the same bounce thing all the time after a good drift hahaha. I thought i was alone!! TheSmokingTire
I really hope the boys from Automation drum up a shedload of interest. Their game in in a class of its own, well done boys! Been following you since the pre-alpha hype!
EnderWiggin35 Woop woop!
EnderWiggin35 it's a really fun game
Matt,
Your smile at around 4:28 is the most genuine and honest review you could give. Every enthusiast should be so lucky to have such an experience. Thanks for letting us plebs live vicariously through you. Never stop!
Truly love the sound of ITB's!
All my mates want Skylines, Supra's but then there's me wanting the classic AE86 😍🔰
Big Bennys Collectables but no one wants ek9 type r
Mantas Jurksa Well ek9 is underrated, reputation Fk up by ricers
It's one of the most iconic FWD car
Yeah Civic are probably most iconic fwd as they got HP and is rather low at price when compare to the others
same as eg6
That sound the AE86 makes with the ITBs is always amazing.
Wait, he bought that amazing vehicle for 50 bucks?!
Technically yes. Lol he said his friend owed him $50 bucks, but instead he gave him the car. Lmao that's what I'd call a come up!!!!
Just lucky because it's worth way more than that.
Yeah but not in that condition. He says he fixed it up and has been working on it since.
Less than $50 actually cause I think the guy was speaking in terms of the New Zealand dollar...
***** I know but still. Try getting a car remotely similar to that where I live for that amount of money.
The fun factor has to be off the charts with this one. Great video guys.
I want this car so fucking bad
Sameee
that's why they're still so expensive lol. everyone wants one
Fucking same
it's mainly because it's a import. most imports are expensive
I'm pretty sure all Initial-D fans want this car
TheSmokingTire good video! love the sound, do you feel the AE86 lives up to all the hype? did it drive the way you were expecting?
***** yeah, it's amazing. So much fun to drive. Especially the way that Jared has this one set up.
TheSmokingTire DRIVE THAT CE LANCER
I have never seen you concentrate so hard Matt!
Best video ever!!!
My fucking Face hurts!!
:) :) :) :)
Good old memories love this AE86
Meko227 He did. It is quick :D
It's the kind of car you say "Faster, faster faster!" with a big smile on your face. Looks like so much fun. Props to this Kiwi for doing it right.
i got automation, its in the beginning stage and needs a lot more work, but it is really unique, well thought out, and intricately detailed.
azonicrider32 yeah they are workin really hard on it, but the physics/modeling engine is really cool. I learned more about what modifications to do engines in 45 minutes of playing that game than in a lifetime of reading car mags.
azonicrider32 Cheers! Lots more cool stuff coming, and I reckon the finished game should be pretty badass :)
I really want to get it cuz it looks like it really appeals to my nerdy car mindset haha. Only thing is I don't know if my cheap laptop will be able to run it.
Needs a semi decent graphics card and at least a low end dual core. Can run on some intel integrated graphics cards, but will look ugly as sin.
Official requirements are
Processor: Dual Core (Intel Core2 DUO E4500 or equivalent)
Ram: 2gb
Graphics Card: NVidia 8600GT/ATI Radeon X1650 (Must support Pixel Shader 3.0)
Internet Access (Offline play possible)
But you can try the demo on lower spec stuff and see if it works.
AutomationGame awesome thanks for the detailed reply!
Matt I love your smile. You don't care if you're driving a supercar or an old corolla, and it makes me happy
To be fair though, this isn’t just any old Corolla
Haven't seen Matt this excited since he drove the no fucks given RX7
Biggest Matt smile ive ever seen. Just goes to show..........Old rwd beater and sideways........Cant beat it.
Giving hope to all of us who cant afford a Fezzer..........
Really, really, really cool car (not because it's an AE86, but because of how bespoke it is and how dedicated the owner is to making it his own). Thumbs up!
My dream car. I come back to this video a couple times a year to remind myself why I am still on the hunt for one of these.. not even picky on body style, I just want a ol rwd Corolla
Deja vu
Fuck you Griffith
Deja vu i have been in this place before
God this reminds me if my first car: a ‘96 BMW e36 318is 5spd in Alpine Weiss and two factory options: heated seats and an LSD. I was 17 and had no more money, so I lightened it as much as I could. I stripped the interior, removed the A/C, stripped the trunk, and removed all the sound deadening. Eventually I put on stainless steel brake lines, a momo steering wheel, pagid sport pads, brass caliper bushings, a lightweight flywheel for the M44 from Turner, Bridgestone S-03’s, sachs sport suspension and the K&N intake. It was brilliant and I miss it so much.
The 4A-GE is one of the best sounding engines ever. In my opinion. Although I drive an AE92 GT-S.
Because of these videos i discovered automation and i LOVE it.
When you play it, it's very obvious that its not finished yet, there are quite a few bugs and there is no career mode yet, but designing engines and seeing what it does immediately is so much fun and you learn so much.
Matt's videos got me looking at that game also, reminds me of the old Sega GT games on Dreamcast where you could "build" a car and could pick FWD, RWD, AWD, inline 4, boxer 4, straight 6, V6, etc etc etc, but way more detailed with more options.
I'm good on Early Access but I'm definitely keeping an eye on it.
Eric M with MORE options? are you sure? Alone the options on the engines:
You can choose the engine layout, the engine material, bore and stroke.
The valvetrain layout, the material of crank, rods and pistons.
Compression, cam profile, N/A or turbo.
And if you choose turbo you can choose the type of intercooler, compressor and turbine size, max. boost, A/R ratio.
Then you can choose fuel and intake system, fuel/air ratio, ignition timing, RPM limit and then you can choose your header type, exhaust diameter, cat and muffler type.
The options on your platform and on the trim are nearly as complex, too.
You seriously had more options on the sega game? Hard to believe.
Benedocta I think he meant Automation is similar to that game but more detailed. That was my first thought anyways.
David Stewart Seems reasonnable :D
Benedocta that's why i said in Sega GT you could "build" a car, build in quotes, the game came out 15 years ago you can't compare it apples to apples to a brand new game.
Good to see matt doing some proper drifting! respect to the owner to letting him thrash it like that
Stefan Wojcik The owner is a top bloke. Everyone got a drive of it, the camera crew, me. We were all encouraged to give it a good flogging :)
Awww yisss..
You just have to love the little hachiroku, there will always be a place in car culture for the AE86.
This is one of my favorite vids on the smoking tire
black watanabe's with a panda trueno, the dream.
What a legend!
I love Kiwis.
The blacktop 20v 4AGE supposedly makes 165bhp, so 135 at the wheels really isn't that bad. And it's just a 1.6l!
Especially for a 20 odd year old motor with minimal upgrades
+camryt actually bhp is measured at the end of the driveshaft so probably more like 150 at the wheels
Gosh darn it, bunta!!
“Your gonna have to pry me out of this car” man that’s absolutely the compliment to get, especially someone as critical of modified cars at Matt. This is just such a fun chassis.
When your car puts a smile on your face like farrah's. and makes you addicted to drive it. You may in fact have something. Nice doooooriftooo Matt.
awesome to see Matt having such a good time! love drifting in the snow
Bunta still owes me a full tank of gas
I dont even have words to explain how fun that looks. The ae86 is in my opinion the best car to own no matter what. Wish i had one of my own..
Dude its nice to see how enthused you get so pumped about the cars makes you just wanna drop everything and hit the track keep it up
Love how you used the actual music from Automation in the video. Really adds to the atmosphere for those of us who have been playing it for a while.
my 86 is basically the same as this. it has the 20valver on trumpets and let me tell you its a fucking joy to drift
Matt Farrah, you have the greatest reactions while driving any car. God amongst men
This is my fav video! Love seeing you have fun and sometimes people forget that's what it is all about!
Wow! I had the biggest smile during the whole video! Thanks TST your guys are awesome!
This was my first drift car and the second car I ever owned. I'm glad to see the expressions on your face. I had the most fun ever in that car and I'm glad to see you did too. I miss my hachi roku badly and will have another one again one day.
Well done video, Matt. You have a gift. Best is yet to come.
This was a real feel-a-good clip! Keep up
that's the reason these cars are so popular, they provide some quality fun time at the track and they're the icon of the mid '80s
the smile on his face is so bright it lifts my spirit ))))
That was one happy Matt :) the owner seemed like a really cool guy as well. Love these NZ videos, keep em coming guys.
"What makes a good shed? Usually a fridge and a couple seats." LOL, I love that line!
rotaryfreak3 more than one person in NZ answered that beer was the most important thing in a workshop. That's how we roll.
AutomationGame Haha, nice!
Was great seeing you have so much fun in this car! I've been around them a lot and they are just inexplicably delightful machines to pitch around.
+TheSmokingTire just nailed it with this video. Great channel so far. Love it.
Don't think I've ever seen Matt smile as much in a video. Just shows you don't need high horsepower to have fun!
Drifting is my life. The AE86 is a tank & so much fun.
Well, I bought the Automation game for steam! If you are into engines at all, then you'll love this! The exterior design part is nice, but building the engine is awesome! This game... is a must have. And thanks TheSmokingTire for advertising such a sweet in depth game!
Wyatt McGeary :D
How excited you were about a little car made me smile this was an awesome video
This was a cool video. A proper AE86 looks like fun in the rain!
What an awesome vehicle... really enjoying these NZ videos, keep up the good work!
Well done! One of my favorite videos you have made!
I am loving this series Matt, what a credit to the builder I was there with you wanting to drift it around the next corner. Job Done!
I don't think I've ever seen someone having so much fun driving a car before.
It was this car and Initial D that really inspired me to like driving. Never seen Matt so happy to drive before, says a lot about that car.
"This is either the most underrated, or over rated car. Depending on who you ask"
Probably the best ad most accurate motor journalist quote ever!
I really think with a car that weighs less than 3,000 lbs the sweet spot in terms of power for drifting is 200-300hp Awesome video as always, you guys.
Epic Video Boys! looks like a lot of fun
Carving the grooves in the tires yourself! Now that's true hardcore! Hats off to the kiwis.... respect!
That sound give's me Eargasm's
FINALLY not another one-take video! Awesome video Matt!
Yes guys yes!!!! Please keep more videos like this coming!!!
Oh I know that old " It aint finished, it aint ever gonna be finished" feeling all too well.
I would wager that there's quite a few of us watching this video that know the same thing the same way lol.
Matt, you put on such a good show man.
Brilliant and epic video!!
I drove an AE86 for a little over a year. It was a fantastic car, and really great to put snow tires on :)
Heaven is a 86 in the rain!! Nuff said!!
Cheers, fellas. Great video, I am a huge fan of the 86 family, so much that i drive an FR-S. Can't wait to give Automation a try.
Matt had a lot of fun in dat car. Can be seen on his smiles per gallon face. Envy u dude.... ;)
Awesome video
Thad: 'Big Drift, Big Drift…. Come on. Yeah!!!'
Easily the best video TST has done in some time. And hands down the best NZ video posted. Well done, boys. Well done.
sereneturmoil You should see what's still to come :D
The car is what it is. That is the package. It does not pretend or need to be anything else and that's the culture.
Look like you had a blast Matt
Tried the demo of Automation, bought it 15 minutes later. I am having so much fun just seeing how much power I can get out of engines that I almost forget it isn't finished.
Justin Updyke Glad you're having fun! It'll only get better :)
AutomationGame
Good to hear, So far it is the best early access game I have tried.
Justin Updyke
Matt, you are awesome!
Man, I absolutely love that OMP Rally steering wheel. I've had one of those for years now. It's old as hell, the suede is all rubbed off, and there's no grip left to it, but I refuse to get rid of that steering wheel. I'll re-wrap it one of these days.
One of my favorite Smoking tire episodes... great job and man that looked like a lot of fun...
AutomationGame You guys are doing a great job promoting your product! Helps alot when you actively read and respond to all the comments in these videos, I'll be getting the game real soon.. Keep up the great work!
Sean Tozer Nah, we never reply to comments.. :P
Good show mate!
this is just the motivation i need to get my 86 roadworthy again!
I'm so glad to own this car! It's really something special :)
Thanks for the video guys
A Matt going sideways is a happy Matt :D
Great to see that you are enjoying nz :)
The want is so strong. You have to love it when the intake noise is louder than the exhaust.
