- Matt tests a 500-horsepower Toyota Chaser; the JDM, upscale, luxury sedan by Toyota that most Americans have never heard of, let alone seen. Think of it as a rear-wheel drive, turbocharged Camry, or, better yet, a true four-door Supra.

So. Much. Win.
Damn tj your everywhere lol, but i agree very much win
He's right ☝🏻
Tj Hunt SO MUCH BOOOOOOOOOOSSSSTTTT
Dammn I love my country. NZL
Most people that are into imports and such know about this gem and would be drooling if they saw it in traffic.
***** I drive a JZX100 in the states and its not too difficult to source parts. The front is all IS300 and the rear shares a lot with the LS400 and GS300.
***** they dont lol
Besides my chaser there are only 4 other jzx100s that I know of. Im fairly confident that mine is the only street titled one in the U.S.
***** the TRD version came with a badass LSD. Mine was the regular tourer v and came with an open dif. They made them both 5 spd (r154) and auto
+TheEvoXFreak tourer v's come with lsd bro
The 1JZ out of that car is so underrated. Currently dropping it in a friends 240 currently! Definitely a sleeper though.
ThatDudeinBlue dude i love you man
ThatDudeinBlue JZs are great but I don't think you could call them underrated. Very popular and everyone knows what they're capable of
Do you know how they are on reliability?
ThatDudeinBlue Underrated? Not at all man. They have always been highly regarded due to their tune-ability and reliability.
ThatDudeinBlue I have one of these engines in my '91 Supra. Great engine, super smooth.
Well known car in the drift community, along with its sister; the Mark II. My favorite sedan of all time.
Elephant amen
Wb cresta
Which mark II
@@Treeezplz JZX100 Mark II
With all these New Zealand videos being uploaded, you're slowly convincing me to move to there. The JDM car scene looks wonderful.
***** It's pretty awesome here in a lot of ways.
No kidding.
***** The car scene is here pretty awesome have everything from Tyre lighting aussie muscles, Japanese cars, american stuff, hot rods, motorbikes, off road the list goes on just gotta know where to look.
Have a look at our page Kiwimotive on Facebook and see what other unique cars we drive in NZ ☺️👍
***** These have been some of Matt's best videos he's ever done. The production quality is great. I'm really happy that the Automation guys financed this and made it possible, plus I got to find out about a really cool looking game that I'll be checking out once it's released.
1:47 SSSOO MUCH BOOOST!!!
LOL had me dead
Love JDM imports like this :D to the untrained eye it's nothing more than a family sedan.
The Toyota Chaser is a wolf in a sheep's clothing. Very underrated car. They are cheaper too compare to Civic or Integra Type R , Evolution, Skylines and Rx7. I'm glad that I live in Canada where I have seen several because Canada only requires a car to be 15 yrs old unlike USA which is 25 yrs old
Shit, I dunno where you are getting that cheap shit from, if its under 8k here in Japan, it has been A. Wrecked, B. Drifted and beat to shit C. lots of klics on the clock, any one worth a damn easily 10k, and I am not talking about these bullshitting exporters that claim its a solid car or goo net either.
+mick slippy yea im talking around 7-8 k Canadian Dollars. My friend who imported a 1999 ER34 manual with 140xxx in it yea it is a bit high but he said a chaser will be roughly 7-8 k CAD with japanese yen tax plus the tax here in our province so maybe 1 grand. Definitely not over 10k . He got his ER34 which is a 3.5 geade for like 9500
+Mark I think your friend is referring to the 4AT chasers not the factory 5MT tourer V which tends to cost significantly more. I'm getting a grade 4 Mark II Tourer V for around the price you quoted, but a 5MT car would be nearly double, the current Chaser Tourer I have is much cheaper since it is not a Tourer V.
+NightRush no man it's manual. He showed me the website we were browsing direct from japan auction. he understand japanese even if he is taiwanese . but it is grade 3.5 and with alil high km. Ofcourse price will vary too depending on the body condition and everything else but he told me the best bang for the back would be a Subaru B4 Twin Turbo. Costs around 4-6k CAD with all the taxes.
+Mark Hmm I bet that's a swapped car. I was just talking to a local importer and his most recently landed auto->5MT swap JZX100 was still around $14,000 all said and done (with our weak dollar). Good condition examples with < 100k km and factory 5MT in Tourer V trim are well over $10,000.
I think I remember the intro by heart now
that means that our partnership with Automation is a good one :)
TheSmokingTire ive owned automation for a while and this song is engraved into my brain by now
22laith22 I skip it lol
Piffydaily when you used to launch automation it would play until the game was loaded and would go for a while it plays in my head the entire episode lol
FLYINPOTATOES lol oh wow
I love that this video has so many views. People from all over the planet love a good sleeper.
This car isn't a sleeper. Most owners have them modded out and absolutely slammed
Yes! I love this car. In high school I had a Toyota Cressida that had the Supra V6 in it. It had a ECT transmission in and in power mode it was really fast for a 4 door sedan. I loved it.
+Cereal Killa Rear wheel drive too.
+Cereal Killa supra does not have v6's.. its an inline 6
Imraan Adams okay
noooo!!! my fav car has been discovered. now the price will skyrocket when the US 25 year old law hits.
Yup, buying one in August
Frederick Tambunan I aim to have one by the end of the summer. Hopefully we both achieve our goals
@@ogmudbone2334 yes!!
@@FCT8306onTwoWheels for how much? I'd love to know the price range
@@AnthonyTrifoglio originally planned on spending $15000. Still saving up
This engine and blow off sounds like bryans skyline back in 2 fast 2 furious.. Its so awesome...
D 1jz and 2jz r better than nissan skyliner.wholes more horse power too.those engines build to last fuck these plastic ones now.toyota fucking king in auto.
@Joshua Moore Not wrong though. If you do your proper research the JZ engine platform is by far the best for a tuner to work with in terms of JDM engines.
The sound of that engine... oh my. Great video guys! Beautiful car!
Also don't forget the Chaser's cousin - the Mark II. growing up in South Asia we're very familiar with these (mostly with the modest 1GFE)
80386 Think the Mark II and the Cresseta should get more attention. There are a lot of JDM cars that I think need some love. People are just to busy worshipping GT-Rs, Supras, and S-chasis Nissans.
I'm currently in the process of importing a Toyota Chaser jzx100 to my country, I haven't seen a single one here
wish we had these in america... nice car.
there are about 5 jzx100s in the US lol
Lol i would like to have one of them lol but they're probably super expensive cuz they're so rare lol
one just sold for 22k I think
EVILIMPERIALISM23 we need these and the ford falcons you get there.
***** ford falcon is king, 4 litre inline 6 doch turbo tears new assholes in all JDM cars
I think its really cool that you guys decided to work together like this, im loving the cars and culture over there. Keep it coming!
TheDuckumz I'm glad we got them to come here :)
I like the chaser better than the supra
+B. Jones You must be on drugs.
+Afghan Lion nah, everyone expects a supra to be fast.. the chaser is more of a sleeper
Chasers and Mark IIs look even faster than a Supra
B. Jones yeh supras are pretty overrated
1. Chaser/Mark II/Cresta is only popular in Japan, Russia, Australia, and New Zealand
2. It's pure JDM car (not as like AE86, Silvia, RX7, Skyline, Supra, etc.)
3. Can be used for daily driving and drifting on the track
If you love cars, Automation The Car Tycoon is by far your best invest in terms of a game. You not only gain hours of fun but KNOWLEDGE about how your engine truly works. I bought it thinking i knew everything about engines and turbine, but with this game, it has increase my knowledge and visually shown me why an engine works the way it does and how power is made. Automation will make you want to learn, build, and invest your skills into building the ultimate engine. Seriously! Addicting!!!
I have a JZX100 Chaser, and love it - on the weighbridge when I got it registered, it was weighed as 1470KG (3240LB), so actually lighter than a JZA80 turbo. I have since put lighter wheels/tyres and done a trans conversion to manual removing another 20KG, so it's really not all that heavy for it's size
Wow, what a great car. Love the mods. Love its split personality of one part daily driver, other part racing beast.
Because of this video, I ended up importing one for myself haha the best car that Ive ever owned, THANKS MATT !
Would you mind telling how and where you imported it from? i'd appreciate it very much
How much?
I just imported one from Japan, super clean and i payed around $20.000
Great vid. Love the chaser. I grew up in the Coromandel, at the bottom of the world. so It's freaking me out to see TST filming there.
Adam Smith such a beautiful place, and very friendly people. It just takes forever to get anywhere!
TheSmokingTire Yeah, small population + mountainous topography = every road's "the snake".
TheSmokingTire Can't wait to see how the 1,000HP, R34, G-TR goes on these roads!?!
Adam Smith it was insanely fast.
Adam Smith Bottom of the world? I'm in Invercargill, the Coromandel is luxury to me :)
One of my fav Toyotas of all time. Great vid Matt thanks!!
Fantastic ride! Thanks for sharing!
This is the first time in which I feel more interested in the sponsor (the game in the beginning of the video) than the car being presented in the video. It's the game I've always wanted.
RuTube :)
That car is legit my home screen on my phone 😂 what a weapon!
Killer car! I love to learn about uncommon cars! New Zealand FTW! Seriously obviously big rally roots, a huge Ratrod scene, and apparently tons of JDM! I'm moving!
Great job on fixing up your Chaser. Looks very clean with the perfect engine mods
Best quote ever: So much boooost!!!
Such chaser, much gauge, wow.
My favourite episode, beautiful chaser!!
YES! my very first car that I received from my father back in 2003 was a 1991 mazda 929s. truthfully, I thought the car was a p.o.s. and lamented having to be seen in it while my good friends were rolling around in mustangs, camaros and lifted trucks (I live in Texas). BUT! the car had something in it that absolutely nobody elses vehicle had (hmm, is that a good or a bad thing? lol) right to left oscillating A/C vents! a simple button labelled 'swing' was positioned on the center stack that turned the oscillating feature on and off. amazingly, that component worked flawlessly even past the day I had to say goodbye to the car due to the transmission biting the dust back in 2004. I've never seen it in any other car I've ever been in before or after. oh, memories...
I see so that's why New Zealand imports a lot of car from here! This is what they do! WOW!
Thanks for profiling this car! My favorite is a '95 Cresta (JZX90) and the JZX100 variant, so it's cool seeing it's sister in the limelight! I love the JZ engines but the 1JZ sounds a lot smoother to me compared to the 2JZ. Both are bonkers and great engines! Haha I wish I kept my first car, a MA70 Supra and swapped a JZ engine in it! Now I'm looking for a Cressida, IS300, or a GS300 to make into a makeshift JZX until I can import one! If you love Four doors, especially Toyota ones, we need to be friends.
I have a 1998 GS300, completely stock except for coilovers, and an exhaust. I love it! It looks gorgeous!
P.S. I think we'll be great friends!
Awesome video. I don't know if it's just me but I was constantly adjusting the volume
It's this video which got me into my Jzx100 in 2017. And now I'm so glad I listened to you.
Probably worth at least twice as much now huh
You for sure invested wise if you still have it.
Almost reminds me of an e36 in the front
Scott Brixey more like e38... but yea, its awesome o.O
That's it, I'm moving to New Zealand
AHHHHH!!!Matt Im so jealous. Awesome vid, thanks for posting
Love the swing vent! Also available on the 88-92 Mazda MX-6 and 88-02 Mazda 626.
America fucks me off. I moved to the country mainly for my wife but also because of my love of firearms but upon moving, I didn't realize my love of JDM cars would be throttled and ruined. Why the hell are most of these import banned?! I don't get it. They say emissions but you guys drive fucking huge V8 trucks and shit. It makes no sense.
It's because the cars did not have the Propper paper work to import them. No one thought these types of cars would sell well here. Really to make them legal they needed to have a few crash tested, emissions is more of a Cali thing. But other than the paperwork that is what holds them back. We need them to just allow us to import them already, but alas we must wait till the car is 25 years old so that safety regs won't apply to a registered classic car.
It's because car manufacturers successfully lobbied the government to ban grey imports. Getting a car up to US spec is expensive so they didn't want to be undercut by cheaper European imports.
'they need to pass crash tests' boi these things are a whole lot safer than some of the shitboxes coming out of the US at that time (chevy blazer and ford exploder anyone?)
It sounds like the GTR in 2fast2furious
100%
YESS IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS SINCE I SAW THE PHOTO ON PHILIP'S PAGGEE!!! CANT WAIT FOR FAIZAL'S IDEMON
the land of the longwhite cloud.... its one of the FEW things i STILL like about my home country
- great vid and scenery guys, miss driving them roads
A jzx100 is and has my dream car from the age of about 8. Good thing I live in Ireland and can actually import one 😂
2005 lexus ls430 has swing vents, i only know cuz i have one
Will Marsch really? awesome. Never actually drove that version.
Yeah I love it haha!
Will Marsch I commented above before I saw this comment and deleted. My 06 also has the oscillating vents. Don't know if all trim models have it though. I like that these oscillate in opposite directions instead of the same direction. And I also like how it knows if I have a passenger or not and either oscillates all the way or only half way if it is just me.
Will Marsch I could've sworn theres ones in some Toyota model too, I use to work at a car wash when I was younger and I remember some lady that use to come in all the time to get her car washed had them. I told her I thought they were awesome. Maybe it was a Mazda she was driving though.
My 1997 mazda 626 lx v6 has swing fans in it and when my buddy's come in there amazed and this high tech invention
The important thing to mention is that there is a particular mod: TourerV. Any other chaser (like grande or somethin else) might have 1gfe\1jzge (which are NA versions). They don't have that fancy carbon trims, no LSD and different brakes (might be wrong bout that). Anyways, any markII, cresta or chaser containing TourerV in it's name will have 1jz-gte and a better suspension. Regards from Moscow.
My absolute favorite car. I noticed the car in the intro for the ae86 and been waiting to see the review ever since !
You forgot to mention the Ganador Mirrors. This car has nice quality parts, great build so far.
WristWork what's a ganador mirror?
TheSmokingTire Ganador is a JDM aftermarket company that makes aero mirrors. They're a lot sleeker than the OEM mirrors. They have multiple applications and they very good looking. It's awesome that I'm finally getting to post something directly to you Matt. I've been watching your stuff for several years now and I love it all. Keep it up, I hope to meet you one day and down a few brewskies when you come to NYC.
Denny Singh oh yeah, the mirrors. those were neat, yeah.
I used to love this car on Gran Turismo a long time ago.
Yeah that's the only time ive seen a chaser, so this is the first time ive seen one on video up close
Mate I see them all the time in Australia . What's wrong with North America you guys don't import much do you lol
Yeah we get the crap Avalon though.
I have had a 1997 and now I have a 2001 Tourer V. I can't wait to drive it again.
Ever since you posted this video I have wanted a chaser. Today, I finally bought one. This one's for you Mr. Farah
Yeah boy ! NZ Rep ! :P
Americans have that type of car on the market, it's called Cressida. Of course, that Chaser is 2 gen's newer, but still, they all had JZ and 7M engines on JDM market, as well as Supra.
I had a Cressida. It was wonderful. Highly recommended, if you can find one.
Damn, I do love Cressidas!
There is also Cresta which has JZ engines.
***** Sure, but you can still find used ones. It's a good way to get yourself into a luxury vehicle (or a 4-door RWD vehicle) on the cheap. An old Cressida would make a good daily driver or project car.
***** I got mine in norcal. Currently living in Oregon and I've seen a couple of them around my town (as well as Supras from the same period.) But you're definitely right, geography plays into it.
I have had the pleasure of driving a few Chasers in my life and they are one of my favorite cars. Very easy to drift too!
They did have the "swing" vents on the Lexus ls430 in the US. it was just in the climate settings on the nav screen. :)
NZ is amazing for car culture ANYTHING is possible.
Agreed👌
We made the worlds fastest Indian.
Would you rather live in the US or NZ car-wise, Matt?
very curious about this question
US is car heaven cars cost peanuts. Some cool cars never arrived there, but so what when you can have a garage full of dreams for the price of a single car in Europe.
I'll give you the pros and cons of both
Us pros,
Cheap cars
Cheap petrol
Heaps of parts
High speed tolerance
Us cons
Shitty boring roads
Import laws
No radar scanners etc (in most states)
Toxic community
Nz pros
Nice people
Wide variety of cars
Nice roads
Always close to track
Nz cons
Shipping parts
Low speeding tolerance
Expensive cars (fuel is average around here)
i always see a couple of these at the local drift events in Texas
We've had these Chasers, Levins, Exivs, Mark 2 Grandes running around in the streets of Dhaka for years 😎 Nice to see NZ has a cool JDM Enthusiast community as well
Greetings from 🇧🇩
Looks vaguely E36ish from the front as it passes.
Reminds me of the old Acura TL sedan, the taillights at least. I like the mark2 jzx90 that reminds me of a Camry
JDM isn't the only big car scene here in nz, there is also a huge European car scene, i.e BMW, Porsche, Mercedes, Audi, Lambo, Ferrari, ect
Very clean Chaser indeed. I dig the eyelids on the headlights.
i miss my 96 chaser Tourer V. that was a beasty car. mine was tuned and sounded like a indy car. use to race from Nago to Naha every weekend in Okinawa.
New zealand has almost Zero tariffs, taxes charges and restrictions on imports and modifications. Lucky bastards
Never before i have seen a good looking Toyota.
Adrian B Supra ?
+Emir Demirovski supra is ok, I'm not crazy about its design
Some say... (stig reference)
Dnt were u from .but u dnt live on earth to say dat.theres not a toyota car i can set to make it look r go faster.
I just want to say, Automation is pretty fantastic also, great video Matt
the sound it makes is utterly magical.
It's look like a e39 just a little bit
Yeah at first glance it reminded me a lot of my e39 m5. Nice car
+Daniel Lichtenberg Are you high or something? that plastic shit looking like e39?
looks like BMW's of ~2000
+Adrian Fidi That or a Mitsubishi Diamante ;)
+Adrian Fidi This car essentially is the BMW of Japan.
+Philip H dont ever say that again
Yea i deff see the e36 here.
+Philip H I dont know in what world you live in but if Chaser looks like Diamante to you, you need to go check your eyesight.
I'm speechless, seems like it's pretty sure what i'm gonna import when money comes together. This is amazing!
"swinging/oscillating vents" talked about @ 6:10 were in 01-06 Lexus LS430
I wouldn't exactly say a Chaser is a "Supra", although it does share the same motor, the car's heavier, geared differently and completely different suspension. Not to say its not a awesome car. It's just not a Supra because it shares the same motor.
Thanks for the info guys, much appreciated.
Yes. I'm aware. I have a mint '90 MK3 Supra rocking 400+HP :)
paradoxdesigns That's awesome, never know who the person is behind the keyboard lol.
broderick71195 You betcha. I've been a proud Supra owner for 16 years now :)
broderick71195 Supra, Chaser, Mark II, etc all came with both 1JZ and 2JZ engines
Why is the Toyota Chaser so popular in Russia?
Skylines are too.
Think about it this way. In Japan Skylines are EVERYWHERE they basically are the Mustang of Japan. Forget the GTR. That is like the Shelby Cobra of Japan. The Toyota Chaser was that cars direct competition. It was originally built to take on the Skyline (and was originally a Coupe). That "battle" continued on. Both were built in MASSIVE numbers to a point where they are dirt cheap. So you will see a lot of them in Russia because of it. The big stuff like the Supra are too expensive even now, this car is basically a Japanese LS1 Camaro and at the same price you can get a shitty Camaro for.
Chaser little more than r34 gt-t sedan in Australia
Because it's cheaper than any other JDM sportcars and looks like BMW 90-s.
Supra in good condition price 20000$. Chaser - less than 10000$
I must say, I REALLY enjoyed the video, and I like the owners perspective on cars. Good video.
IIRC, I saw the swing vents on a couple of Lexus LS430s when I worked for them.
Not a sleeper... and everyone knows what a chaser is..
ugh why america why you have to be so boring😭😭
A country that gave birth to a company called GM, what do you expect.
I know... all we get is those shit muscle cars Don't get me wrong they are beasts, but lack lot of aspects.
you have got to be joking. America has the greatest car culture in the world. the US custom/hot rod car culture is amazing. in Europe we have nothing like that. modifying cars is illegal in France. in Ireland you can't really legally insure anything modified, that's if you can afford the motor tax. in the US you can do anything you want. sucks that you are not allowed imports though...
In America you cab save up 30 k and buy your dream car.In EU UK "other places" the government doesn't want anyone driving .Middle class doesn't exist.
The more of these videos I watch in New Zealand the more I really wanna go there! Awesome car I never even heard of it before.
thank you. put this car on the map!! so underrated. more so, still so unknown to many (the 1J engine too). reminds me of tokyo extreme racer and early D1 days. i love the TL, but i gotta say this the car the TL wished to be but isnt lol, and so ahead of its time.
Thanks for doing this episode. A lot of us US folks don't know about this JDM gem. I tried to turn my 4th gen Camry into a Chased; not much luck. LOL
The swing thing is dope, Matt we had that in a lexus ls430.
Nice video man ,
Yes chaserz are beautifull car
I got the series 2 in peral white
I am in love with the beauty of this car, the body size is just perfect.
Thanks man
I bought automation after seeing you play it and its AWESOME!!!
Omg the subarus at the beginning😍
FYI Matt, the oscillating vents was an option in the 01+ LS430.
My Dads old LS400 circa 2000 had the swinging vents.
The front end screams Honda yet the back end is pure Toyota. Really neat car I've never heard of it before until I watched this video. Thank you Matt!
Interesting, I guess it depends where you come from... Ask anyone from Europe and they will instantly say it's a blend of E36, E38 and E39. Really nothing pure Toyota about the back end, it's more BMW than Toyota.... Not really sure which Honda the front end would be either.. JZX100 Chaser is my all time favorite car just for the record. I own JZX110 Mark II (later model) though due to prices. I also own E36 back at home in Europe.
Incredible review
Some years of the sc400's had the swinging vents here in the states. I've worked on them.
I first saw this car as a kid via Grand Turismo. I always liked it for some reason, now I see why.
Amazing build respect to the owner.
btw-swinging vents are included in some lexus' here in the states.
2005 (i believe) and up LS430
Well I was watching some chaser vids and I am pleased to know that my homeland is a favourite for modified cars
Saw this video 6 years ago. I’ve now been the proud owner of a Chaser for the past 2 years 🤟🏼😎 Funny the video got recommended to me again right now
I've watched this video so many times, I want a chaser soooooooo bad!!
I love my chaser. Sure, it's a relatively stock auto, but it is still a buttload of fun to drive, and blends into the masses reasonably well too :P
Really cool that you teamed up with camshaft software for automation. Brilliant game tied in with an excellent youtube channel. Can't lose. It isn't helping my uni results though lol.
One of my favorites sounding engines.... 1jz ftw!!
Enjoyed the video. Might have to move from California to there 😜
The Ls400/430 lines have the swinging air vents too FYI
