I'm sorry you crashed that dudes ride. That must be a horrible feeling.
But I'm happy to know that you actually push these cars and find their limits. It really adds weight to your opinion of fast cars.
SpaceManDawn he was driving a front heavy civic on a soaking wet track, no limits were being pushed imo.
connoisseur de camembert borrowing someones car that is shod with summer max performance R-compound tires and taking it on a track full of standing water is pushing your luck if not your limits.
TheSmokingTire haha I learned to not drive lightweight cars with no abs, or tcs and bad tires (or just wrong ones in your case) the hard way too. funny enough my brakes where touchy also hit the median full lock and snapped the LCA, killed a axle, bent tie rod, wheel bearings fell out of the race somehow and busted the ball joint not to mention body damage to the car oh fun days.
TheSmokingTire Good news is, a check was cut to the man, and hopefully he's not to mad about the whole thing. Would like to see the Civic again some day but doubtful seeing as its in NZ and would require another trip back to there to try again...either way, it was bound to happen one day, and at least, although being a very custom car with a lot of work put into it, it was a Civic and not a Ferrari or some other very pricey toy, and it was just a front bumper, not an engine, intercooler, entire car, ect...So its not like he just dropped 50 grand for that, although I'm sure Matt still payed Matt (Lol) a decent bit for that hand made bumper.
Wow, huge respect to you for having the confidence to get back into another hand built car after the mishap in the Honda. If I did that I doubt I'd have the confidence to hop right into another car. Kudos to you man, great video as always!
Props for the courage to keep on driving other peoples cars that day. Hope the civic owner took it okay.
That car needs to be emulated by Mitsu. Lots of respect to the owners for taking on a project like that. Stuffing a 4WD EVO manual drive-train into a FWD coupe, automatic, and then being able to successfully balance, aligned, and finding success like that it's first time out? That's some dedication, knowledge, and a big set of engineering cojones to pull off.
that Mirage Evo is sick AF!
Evo guy seems bright and cool, he just sound like Peter griffin nz
Matt, iv got a lot of respect for you and what you do, but after hearing you say you actualy wrote a check to this guy for your mistake made me respect you even more.. im not too sure other "journalist" or "testers" would do the same.
Alexis Marrero don't be too harsh on the rest of the journalist community, many people I know would have done the same thing.
I can't imagine how bad it must feel to crash someone elses car, but judging from your reaction to it it can't have been a pleasant experience. You seem like a standup guy, Matt. I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavours, you're a hardworking gentleman, and I enjoy hearing your opinions on the machines you drive.
Ive always wanted to see a 2door Evo. Thanks for this film. I'm inspired to build one just like it but for daily use....
hey man I live in Orlando but I was born in Puerto Rico and Mitsubishi mirage ls but over there they call them evolution 7 they come 1.8 they r fun to drive u should look them up I think every body have one that style came to Puerto Rico in 1997 which is the best year but then 98 to 2000 the a Lil bit way looking
I'm late to the party by a year, but I just had this to say.
It's funny that so many people are willing to tell Matt how to drive and what setup the car should have had at the time. I guess that people don't realize that the risks are real in this web show, and so are the people and vehicles. Matt is an excellent driver with hundreds, if not thousands of hours behind the wheel in a performance environment. Mistakes happen, especially in an unfamiliar car at an unfamiliar track in adverse conditions. He wasn't going absurdly fast from the looks of the video. Despite all of this, sure does make for a great episode. It really shows your character the way that you genuinely cared about the car and the owner. Keep on keepin on! You're the truest form of a car enthusiast.
This is one of my favourite videos I've seen on car culture. The highs, the lows. And your appreciation for the work put in to the cars makes you my fave, Mat.
Gotta by some merch to help you pay for the next bingle, but make sure it happens.
Much respect, and thanks for bringing these guys and more to other enthusiasts around the world who also appreciate their work.
Been watching you since the TUNED series on Drive, always liked your content but after this film and seeing how humble you can be my respect for you has gone up immensely. You're a great guy Mr Farah.
Thank you SO MUCH Matt for coming to New Zealand and filming these segments - I'm a car guy through and through and watching all these videos (over and over btw) goes a long way adding towards my national pride :D
Hey Matt, I've been watching your stuff for years now and I never once doubted your sincere love for all cars. This was an accident, an unfortunate one especially considering the hand made parts involved. Just like you said, every time you get in a car you're taking a risk, but with the same token every time someone hands you their keys they're taking the same risk. You didn't do it on purpose and accidents happen, especially in that horrendous weather at racing speeds. You're a good guy Matt making mistakes happens, I have no doubt that you reimbursed him fully. If anything seeing how distraught you were when you first saw the damage only reinforced how much you care about every car you get in. Big fan from Vancouver, Canada looking forward to years more of my favorite internet car show!
I can't believe how much work and money went into That civic and they didn't touch the brakes
Mike Labonte Didn't need to. The car was so light that bigger brakes would have made it even worse. Brakes don't help when you you're hydroplaning.
Matt, we really appreciate these videos. Wish more of the ‘custom’ car culture would bleed into the US. As a viewer you have a way of portraying the personality of the cars to us, thank you. Keep up the great work.
If Mitsu wants back in the car game instead of making stupid PHEV crossovers, they should make an Evo coupe. That'll get people lined up in their dealerships
maximus9401 look back at the old DSM cars. Mitsubishi really missed the boat in that they could have used the amazing evo drivetrain in any number of cool cars and really kept the enthusiasts excited. They really dove themselves into the ocean on that one.
maximus9401 Evo's aren't known to be coupes, they are known to be 4-door turboed rally cars, the car in the video is a mirage with a evo fenders, hoods, lights, bumpers and etc with an evo engine.
Mad respect Matt, it takes GIANT balls to get back into another persons car after having a crash in anothers. I wouldn't touch another persons car for weeks after doing that if it were me. Kudos my man.
Wow, that Mirage/Evo track car is an amazing little build!
TheSmokingTire Matt you work some long days, some in the rain, some days driving car after car back to back. But most impressive is how you treat people with respect no matter the price tag of the vehicle. That is why you are the right man for /Tuned and why so many folks want you to drive their personal vehicle.
Matt F for president! (Once in office please remove ethanol from our gas and get us import laws like New Zealand)
i cant thank you enough for showing me some of the awesome cars from my own country that i may never have seen, dont be so tough on yourself about the mis hap, it comes with the territory, if you're still here, keep em coming!! if you've left, cant wait to see you back next time, im sure i speak for everyone when i say you're welcome anytime!! keep up the awesome work
Props for getting back out there after the crash. Easy to see how much respect you have for these cars, as well as their owners!
This is a great video Matt. Sorry you had to go thru that Im sure it must of been a horrible feeling. I hope he can get his car fixed better than before.
Mad props on the video. Not many online would admit to not being 100% perfect. This only increases my respect for you.
daym that mirage is something, love how they moved back the seat for centre of gravity.
Great episode. Glad you guys are open to share your failings as it's not all glitz and glamor in the automotive world. In Matts defense, it was fairly wet out there by the looks of it. Hydroplaning is no joke... happens just like that unless you've got your puddle radar on lock. Good no one was hurt and that the car will go on to race another day.
Even though Mitsubishi's aren't anything to write home about these days, i've still got a soft spot in my heart for them. I love mine dearly.
It sucks that you crashed the EG6, but I'm really glad that you weren't hurt. Have to say that you're an amazing driver and I'm loving the NZ episodes thus far!
Ok that evo coupe is so crazy. Seems like an amazing build and track car. Would love to own that badboy haha.
Massive respect to you Matt for what you said regarding the accident in the civic. I know I would throw you my keys even easier after seeing that, and having been watching your videos for a very long time. Keep up the awesome content! If you're ever up in Canada, lets do a one take, would be amazing to hear your thoughts!
FINALLY SOMETHING MORE THAN THOSE POV DRIVING VIDEOS!
justin bouche we've put up a pretty, produced film every week for the last 5 weeks.
john learoux He is talking about the numerous clips from New Zealand. If you have not checked them out I really recommend them all. The Chaser "supra" is one of my favs.
john learoux no, I'm talking about the films from new zealand, that we went half way around the world to make and that I spend 30 hours a week editing.
Way to get back on that horse and ride. Respect.
Great episode! Crashes happen, money will fix it and time will heal it. At least he now knows he needs a brake balancer ! Keep on rocking Matt and com'on down to Georgia and hit up some country road one takes!
Man, you can just see it in your face, you weren't having as much fun as you normally would after that unfortunate accident. Sick video though, and that evo looks like a blast to drive!
that honda looked better without the front fascia anyway..
I often day dreamed about this swap for many years... what an awesome set up!
so much respect to you, brother, you got back on the saddle and handled things well, i would've beaten myself up pretty bad,
As soon as he said "stock brakes" I knew it would end badly
***** What do brakes have to do with the contact patch? The tires maintain traction. The brakes did what it was supposed to do. What about the brakes made the car crash in your opinion?
You keyboard warriors are amazing. No seat time, no clue of how to tune, all talk about things you can't understand.
It was a joke. If anybody is being a "keyboard warrior" here it's you. Sorry. Let's just not argue.
beautiful evo! I would love to see a more detailed video about that car. really amazing stuff.
That Mirage sounded fantastic. Could listen to that all day
This is one of my favorite sounding cars on the internet. Never gets old
Excellent series Matt.
It is really refreshing to actually see people making mistakes. Yours was very unfortunate, but they way you handled it was very respectful and dignified. Thank you for being a great example to the community Matt, and thank you for all your hard work.
Also, that Mitsu was bad-ass as hell. Too bad it was wet.
Watching these videos makes me want to move to NZ. Lots of good cars, easy to import, affordable racing. In my country import taxes are waaaay high so almost all cars are expensive. Even owning a toyota yaris or a honda civic makes you a rich person. (only city cars and small mpvs are affordable)
Anyway, felt bad for your crash Matt. But you know, accidents do happen sometimes and there's nothing you can do about it. But it's cool that you chose to keep driving after that. After my first crash I was pretty much driving at far slower speeds than I usually do for quite some time. Anyway, your videos are really nice to watch. Keep up the good work Matt. 😊👍
It was bound to happen to anyone who does this for a living Matt. Thanks for all the entertaining videos. Glad you are okay. Ive seen lots of Mirage Coupes kitted out to look like Evos. The one in this video looks like the ultimate in form.
Out of all cars, a Civic had to end your streak haha. All good Matt, I'm happy as a viewer that you showed that you're human too. Mistakes happen, and I'm glad to see you're okay. Also, glad to see the car didn't get much damage and I'm sure Matt (Rule) might be planning something new for that front.
CheezyGeez Matt is a great fabricator and a great guy. A lesser person would have handled that incident totally differently, but he was cool about it. I mean, obviously he wasn't happy, but all you can do is say sorry as many times as possible and cover the damage, and his car will live to race another day.
TheSmokingTire Good to read that he's just as cool as he seems in the video. Sucks though, my Honda fanboyism was waiting to see what your thoughts were on the Civic. All good though, I'm sure there's one coming up in the future. Thanks for the reply, and loving the videos man.
New Zealand seems like a really chill place to be a car enthusiast, I like the vibes.
It sucks that he hit the wall in that car, but the way he handled it was the best way possible and showed what kind of man he is, props to you Matt!
Even the best drivers in the world crash sometimes
Even though Matt is a skilled driver who's probably driven fast on dozens of tracks, he made an error which can happen to anyone when you're pushing a car to the limits. Very cool of him to show his crash and mention how hard it must'v been to go for another run in someone else's car right after.
Good sport, a hurt ego always builds a stronger mind set behind the wheel. Props for getting back out there.
At least it was on a track and not off the cliffs in LA where you do your one-takes. Good to see that nobody was injured.
Nice work Matt! Im sure he has spare splitters on the shelf. I made mine, busted it on the circuit, made another no biggie at the end of the day!
Everytime I watch these vids Im reminded of home ( live in Australia now) but this one especially, Hutt Valley being mentioned woke me up, I grew up in Upper Hutt. Man I miss NZ at times. Love it here in Australia, especially living on the sunshine coast literally a stones throw from the beach but NZ will always be home. Thanks for the little reminders of home, Matt.
Love the car culture in NZ too. Australias is similar but not quite the same. Great here too but slightly more adventurous in NZ with their builds.
Antifaith29 Australia is great, it's just a shame it's so much harder to legally mod/scratch build road cars :(
AutomationGame Yep I agree. Even engine transplanting can get really difficult.
Hope ya had a great time in nz and visit again
One of my friends from middle school had a 2000 mirage de, and within 3 years he converted it to an evo 4 however using the powertrain/4wd of a gsx eclipse with a t28, had it tuned, and that things a monster...
The sound that Evo makes...just wow.
Matt sorry about the small crash, could of happened to anyone even the Stig. Glad you straight away got back out there man. You deserve a Top Gear style budget you're a good dude I'm sure you'll get plenty of money from this some day just don't stop
+lalala kieran The Stig went off in that Koenigsegg. I'd hate to see the repair bill for that mishap.
Man I felt like a proper wrench doing my headgasket and cams but these guys fabricate everything! So much respect for the Kiwi's. If you can even wrench a little is saves you at least 20% of the cost of a build but these guys are probably saving closer to 50% since they do everything themselves.
This is the replacement for Topgear, hands down my favorite channel on UA-cam.
Just to go out on the track again in that weather with such a powerful car after an incident... Takes curage :)
Thats so weird I was just thinking yesterday watching one takes, how brave Matt has to be to risk that financially
Just glad you are ok Matt and that you were able to write the check and take care of the car's owner. Stuff happens in life. Keep on doing what yo are doing and hope that is the last mishap for quite a while.
Great video with two really interesting cars, what horrific conditions for a track day though - someone is always going to off on a day like that! Pretty normal for Wellington unfortunately.
that evo..... I'm speechless
Car sounds good man, real good.
TheSmokingTire Matt, Ive been following the videos and it was easy to subscribe to the channel back when I came home in 2011 for Afghanistan. I saw the video of a modified BMW M3 (green) from #VFEngineering I'm glad to see the care and empathy you had when the accident occurred with the Civic. You have brought us great vehicles with great locations. Now, I credit you with bringing the TRUE passion of an auto enthusiast when you shared with us all how you truly felt with the Civic. Keep the videos coming and thank your crew for us as well. Great shots...NO, BEAUTIFUL shots of vehicles and scenery.
Ouch. Glad to hear the Civic wasn't too badly damaged. It's a shame though. It would have been cool to get a proper look at it, but it seems like that was probably the worst possible weather for a fast FWD car.
That "Evo" was extremely cool though. I guess it counts as one. Despite being based on a Mirage, it's mostly Evo underneath, along with the styling of course.
Great video Matt
Who else thinks that ending was super cool? (switches down/sound sync)
Roman Pyasetskyy thanks! I rarely use sound effects, but "I didn't crash it" seemed like such a fitting ending I wanted to go for the "drop the mic" effect there
The EVO is insane !
wicked car sounds amazing .thats some good kiwi craftsmanship !
cheers
I’ve been following Matt since garage419. Watching this again, it would have been so easy to simply cut the portion of crashing the civic. However, you didn’t and I respect that. I think it’s why I respect this channel and Matt’s opinion generally. I may not always agree, but I know one thing for sure. Matt is an honest guy.
love your videos
Wow, man I heard the story on the podcast, but damn that track is wet. I would NOT go out there again and I would have just taken my loss. Damn Matt, you're a fucking champ
I had a 97 2 door Mitsubishi Mirage. It got me into really wanting an Evo which I got eventually. The Mirage was complete crap and kind of glad I totaled it into a tree. ;) Glad to see someone converted one into something cool.
That mitsubishi is the most awesome thing i've ever seen.
I bought the game before finding out about this channel so when I first heard the intro it triggered my memory of automation
I loved the two door evo.
Sorry about the spill Matt. The first track day I ever went to it ended up raining like that and I had a spill off. When you hit that wet grass you are just along for the ride. Fortunately for me, the barrier was far enough away for me to escape with only a bruised ego. A few other drivers on the day were not so lucky unfortunately and had their cars escorted home on tow trucks.
That civic looked ridiculous anyways(and im a honda guy). All joking aside, its pretty cool you accepted all responsibility and you didn't exclude it from the show. Most would hide the fact that they messed up. You're a stand up guy.
That mirage is pretty damn sick.
That sucks matt, bad luck with that. And as said before, its awesome you got back in the Mitsubishi. Were only human and everyone makes mistakes
pretty sweet mang!
not really a super huge evo fan, and this is definitely not the fastest evo ive seen...but i can definitely say this is my favorite evo. fucking gangster..
That mEVO sounds really good
Who'd have guessed that a Honda Civic would turn out to be Matt's kryptonite!
GOD I LOVE THIS CHANNEL
That mistubishi sound so good omg
The coupe shape works so well, they should do one like the Impreza 22b
So Matt drives some seriously fast cars and crashes a civic just proves that at any time in any car something can go wrong. I would also feel bad for crashing somebody's pride and joy
EVO drive train in a Mirage. Some good stuff there.
The Mirage coupe is known to some as the Lancer coupe I've seen a couple of Evo drivetrain and 4g63 swap on some, but I've never seen one as bad ass as this one. Huge amount of respect towards the owner, amanzing. #BuildNotBought
I got a evo 5 engine in an 01 mirage coupe an it's an absolute beast....
That mirage is pretty wild.
Just won another fan. The posh exotics are all well and good, but the homebuilt stuff, that's interesting. Hope everyone parted as friends.
i gotta b18c1 swap w/built head in my civic em1 clone, i also just picked up a poor man type r, gsr block w/b16 head, that will be goin in a eg hatch. i also have a 1963 Rambler Classic 660 sedan w/slant 6, im also on the lookout for a 5 speed sc300 w/2jz
You know what Matt?
You're a decent guy. I clearly see that you felt bad for that car. Even with all of the super expensive exotic stuff you drive regularly, you can still show respect and appreciation for another man's work, even if it is "just" a civic.
Kudos man.
detaart It's much worse to crash a hand built car than it is to crash a press car or something insurance will pay to replace entirely. I felt absolutely terrible after that. I don't even want to know what Danny was thinking watching me crash that car and then handing me his keys, after never letting anyone else drive his car. Danny is a champion.
TheSmokingTire It will be back, stronger and better.I crashed my vx the first day i got to drive it after a one year build. Shifter cable stuck, and instead of going up a gear, it went into some random other gear (lower obviously). I spun and crashed it. It's back in our shed. Have to rebuild. It, too, will be stronger and better.
So yeah i know how that part feels ... but i can't imagine watching someone else doing it for you
Don't be too hard on yourself about it. Accidents happen. All things considered, it wasn't too bad. I thought the damage would be worse, judging from the footage.
Another automotive journo would just have shrugged it off and walked away.
You didn't. You actually give a fuck. So, again, kudos.
TheSmokingTire MAJOR props to you, Matt, for still putting that in the video and not deleting the footage. If you would have done that, we would've never known. Good for you for showing everything that happened that day, not just the good stuff.
Just a civic, the words of ignorant idiots
nick billy that's why just was in quotations.... He wasn't being serious
