  • Deep cycle batteries are available in standard, flooded type lead acid batteries and AGM absorbed glass mat chemistry. The benefits of AGM deep cycle batteries are the slow self discharge rate, lack of corrosive gas and vibration resistant nature.

    Thanks for explaining the discharge rates. I’ve got more the one vehicle and I’m always ruining batteries because I’ll forget to put on the battery tender. Last time I bought a new battery, I got the AGM/gel type for one of my cars and I’ve noticed that if I don’t drive it for a week, it’ll continue to start right up! That never used to happen in the past. I’ve got a fairly new battery in one of my other vehicles but after about a week of sitting, I can tell that it has lost some of its power. Sure, I can always disconnect one of the terminals but that resets the clock. I’m going to be buying AGM from now on. It’s definitely worth the extra money for someone in my situation.

      Biased much? Flooded lead won't freeze if they have a reasonable charge, certainly enough to start the vehicle they were meant for, at that temperature. The performance is irrelevant otherwise, except for greater lifespan, and yet, the lifespan in dollars per year is "usually" lower. This leaves one decided advantage which is offroading, resistance to vibration, and orientation at odd angles. Frankly I think the time is near where vehicles will just move to a smaller battery combined with a supercap array. I see people using the supercaps but trying to pick one or the other instead of leveraging the strengths of both together.

    • @stinkycheese804
      @stinkycheese804 6 років тому +4

      No, you didn't. Your alternator may not have been performing up to spec but was definitely putting charge into the battery for it to have lasted that long. A fresh/charged battery CAN start a vehicle 7 times no problem, but not do that and power the vehicle the whole time. Recognize that your battery or alternator light coming on just means the voltage dropped below optimum, not that it's doing nothing.
      This is fact. You obviously don't understand how much current is used driving. It's more than starting in total Ah by multiple times.

      @@josepeixoto3384 A quick google search would tell you. "The acronym stands for “absorbed glass mat” and that's one of many improvements made to Planté's original train light battery. Glass mats, cushioning the ultra-thin lead plates, will squish like a sponge. In turn, manufacturers can squeeze more glass mats and lead into one battery. More lead equals more power. AGM batteries are extremely resistant to vibration, are totally sealed, nonspillable and maintenance-free. AGM offers better cycling performance, minimal gassing and acid leakage when compared with conventional lead-acid batteries. The end result of all of the features of AGM technology is superior life performance. The leading advantages of AGM are a charge that is up to five times faster than the flooded version, and the ability to deep cycle. AGM offers a depth-of-discharge of 80 percent; the flooded, on the other hand, is specified at 50 percent DoD to attain the same cycle life."

      We have about 50 brand new flood lead acid batteries in stock and if we do not keep them maintained they will drop about .1 volts every about 10 days or so, therefore they will discharge at a rate of about half a percent a day if you do not keep them charged up on the other hand AGM batteries loose one to 3 percent a month. Nothing is wrong with Lead Acid batteries as long as you keep them up but AGM batteries are worth the money if one can afford it.This man is speaking the truth!

    Hi, one thing about AGM batteries in my opinion , is that for most makes equalization charges at around 15.5v are not necessary & if anything will shorten the life of the battery. I see Lifeline are one of the few to say their AGM's are designed to cope with a 15.5v overcharge occasionally & it does them good. Some people seem to confuse AGM's & GEL cells. I'd like to warn people that most GEL cells are likely to have their lives greatly shortened by charging much above 14.2 volts at normal (non freezing) temperatures. Victron Energy say their GEL cells can last up to 20 years correctly charged. I My Sonnenschein GEL cells are still almost the same capacity as when they were new 10 years ago . Unless you can be sure of correct charging, AGM's are a safer bet due to their less strict charging requirements, though.

    AGM=absorbent glass mat, not absorbed glass mat. Hurts your credibility when you get the basics wrong.

    Any way to fit an AGM with 220 Reserve Capacity in my 2018 Promaster City van? I only find them in 13 inch long and seems my battery shelf is around 12 inches long. The recommended replacement for my van is an Optima DH6 Group size H6 with an RC of 140 minutes. Currently my battery has a RC of 120.

      A fantastic although expensive solution would be to drop in a battleborn 12-volt 100 amp hour lithium iron phosphate battery that meet your Dimensions. It will replace two 6 volt 200 amp hour batteries

      @@DeepcyclebatterystoreSanDiego But can these batteries replace automotive starter batteries? do they have the Cold cranking amps and will they charge correctly from a 160a alternator designed for Led Acid batteries?

      @@12vLife perhaps running two battery system. 1 battery starts the motor. The other battery is the house power. In-between the batteries use a sterling DC battery to battery charger
