Unlocking the Power: The Truth About Deep Cycle Marine Batteries

- Many of us are still using lead acid deep cycle batteries, like the deep cycle marine battery from Interstate. Understanding how these batteries work and some simple tips to keep them maintained can assure longevity and years of dependable use.
A long haul trucker friend told me a trick they use to extend battery life. Annually, or when you notice your battery losing power, add a 325 grain aspirin tablet to each cell. This desolves the buildup on the plates and renews the cells. In the last year I lost 2 Interstate batteries. One was 9 years old and the other 13.
Cool tip! Thank you
I fill my Marine Interstate battery every year. After you top off and put it on the charger, sit by your battery and listen in. You can here the cells charging with subtle popping noises. Cool stuff.
EXCELLENT video.... You hit all the important points, with no fluff.
I might suggest an Equallization charge at least seasonally as well, at least for any starting purposes 👍 ~
@@georgehofgren6123 Great advice! Thanks
I have Agm batteries and they are great no problems.
Thank you. Excellent video
Thanks!
PbO2 is lead oxide NOT (peroxide).
I bought one from Interstate lasted 6 months they gave me a free one lasted 5 months done with Interstate I was only running a 30 lb MinnKota on it with a 12 ft John boat
That's frustrating. Mine have gone hard for seasons. Have 4 of them in the boat working almost daily.
I have an Interstate deep cycle running my trolling motor on my 16 foot Legend. Have been using the same battery for 4 years and still going strong....
Hey guys is this battery good for a 10 ft one man Creek boat ? Trying to understand what I need exactly.
@@joshuaculick7767 any Deep Cycle will work my friend. I have a12 foot..Presently I'm using Walmart's battery with no issue. I've had no luck with interstate. ifish twice a week...and only using a 30 lb thrust trolling motor. I keep it maintained with distilled water Been fishing since 1960
@@dougv7728 which interstate battery are you running for your trolling motor? curious im looking at them for my 45 pound thrust motor.
thank you very helpfull video
Thanks!
Just watched your video , great but you didn't say how high to keep the level inside, looking for that infp

I know this is an older video, but I feel my question is still pertinent. I have a two battery system wired parallel. Is it absolutely necessary to run the same type batteries in parallel? Ex. two starting, two dual purpose, etc? I have a Blue Sea ACR setup with a single on/off switch. I run one as starting bat and one as house for electronics.
@@TangierFly Do you mean same group (27/31 etc)? My starting battery is a different group than my house. Are you saying you have 2 house running in parallel?
@@BrianGaberFishingI currently have two group 27 dual purpose bats that I want to replace. I thought I might run one starting bat for the cranking and the other a deep cycle for the house. Both 27. I have been told not to mix the starting and deep cycle in parallel. Especially with the one position switch ACR. Something about they wouldn’t charge the same when the engine’s alternator is charging both. The boat manufacturer told me he recommends two starting bats. I usually only run a ff/gps on the house while the engine is off.
@@TangierFly Now I understand. Yes having the 2 parallel batteries the same makes sense.
Those interstate batteries are bullet proof if you take care of them
Thanks! That's been my experience too
Just bought two DC-27 Interstate batteries at Costco..................$89 each
I just picked up a battery from a guy want to sell for my 2004 volvo xc90 6 cylinders i got home looked at the battery closer it turn to be deep cycle battery but its say 900 CCA which is my car need can i still hook it up to my car or what is the deal with those deep cycle battery's ?
The structural difference between deep-cycle and cranking lead-acid batteries is in the lead battery plates. Deep cycle battery plates have thicker active plates, with higher-density active paste material and thicker separators. Alloys used for the plates in a deep cycle battery may contain more antimony than that of starting batteries. The thicker battery plates resist corrosion through extended charge and discharge cycles. All that said, you can start your car with it provided it provides the current required (the 900 CCA's). I would remember though that the deep cycle is ultimately designed for a lot of complete discharges, rather than the quick shot of starting power.
Can I use 31mhd cca950 rc195 battery in my work truck 95 Ford f150
80%😮 Then why is it called a deep cycle battery?
Exactly. Probably because it can. Turns out it's just not as good for them.
Hi Brian, would you recommend using a marine deep cycle battery on a newport NT300 motor?
You could. Those motors will go 5.5 mph and will use 23% of a 100 amp hour battery (36volt system) in an hour. The conditions (wind/waves) will affect those results. But if you have a 36 volt system and some amp hours, it should work just like the deep cycles that have powered all the trolling motors before the lithium batteries came online.
@BrianGaberFishing thank you sir I capsized at lake was unable to retrieve battery and to go back and purchase $799 battery i might as well toss motor out too. I'll give it a try
Saw a viedo where they kinda refurbished a battery by adding water and hooking it up to a high-powered charger and boiling the corrosion off.
Interesting. Did you see the comment below about aspirin?
Don't do that. You will only cause more off gassing. If the hydrated cells won't charge, either your charger has a low voltage cut off, or your battery is just that worn out, or you have an improper mixture of electrolyte. Could be grounded out retaining walls between the cells from warping due to excess heat. If this is the case your battery will hold weird voltages based on how many cells are within. For example a car battery holding 10vdc after a charge is a 12 plate 1v cell grouping. With 2 plates grounded, it bypasses those cells only outputting 10 volts. Do not use this battery. There are some higher end chargers that will refurbish a battery with a proper charging cycle. But, it's probably best to get new batteries and take better care of them. Best of luck.
Nothing can be done for warped or grounded cells BTW.
what battery do you recommend for Minn Kota trolling motor?
@brooktroutangler5917 I am running 3 Interstate group 27 deep cycle flooded lead acid batteries. You have other options too. Here's an article on some choices www.interstatebatteries.com/blog/marine-trolling-motor-battery
Where can I get one for $99?
I was surprised when I researched your question. I got them at my local marine dealer last summer. I remember getting them for around that mark. Checking today, the group 27's are up to $144. www.interstatebatteries.com/products/srm-27/rv-equipment
Costco
Its sheding sulfates into the electrolite turning the acid into water releasing electrons, there is no such thing as a 3 to 1 ratio of the solution. Thats the specific gravity of the acid depending on it's current charge. You are giving advice about chemical equations you dont fully understand. You gave somemgood advice about temperature and basics. But how do you even mauntain your 3 to 1 ratio if you don't even mention a hydrometer to measure the specific gravity of the electeolite. Hydrogen gasses off from the water and evaporates, usually only requiring adding DI-water to maintain the proper level. Recharging the battery will use the H2O with the charge equation turning it back into acid while absorbing electrons and the sulfates back into the plates.
SO YOU TELL US WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO DO......NO SHOWING ANY INFO, SO THIS WAS GOOD FOR RADIO.
Are these interstate marine DC batteries agm or standard?
Sorry for the delay. These were AGM.
This video told me absolutely nothing
Thanks for the feedback Ken. Beyond some lead acid basics and maintenance, I was recognizing that they still are a decent option for dependability. At the time of the video they were very reasonably priced compared to some of the more popular expensive options that are coming online.
When you weren’t listening, NO SOUP FOR YOU!
