The problem was this band didn’t want a bassist for a member after cliff. Jason was never a member of Metallica. He was there for touring live shows. Nothing else. When it came to recording he had no say
The saddest part is that ironically Jason, whilst clearly being the most mature of all three was so burned after 14 years, and so hurt and disrespected by Hetfield telling him he could be replaced if he didn't drop Echobrain, that he didn't go through with the group therapy. The other three and management had the wisdom to see they needed impartial help - Jason could have used Phil Tolle as an independent ally and voice of reason and this may have opened up the band to doing side projects (which they all did eventually) and taking the year break that Jason wanted (which they eventually did due to Hetfield going into rehab). Unfortunately Jason was so burned he told Phil to leave the room as soon as he met him, and then proceeded to quit, which he had decided to do three months earlier, even telling Kirk and Lars, but no-one checked in with him or took him seriously or told Hetfield to try to give him a reality check. It's so sadly ironic that everything Jason wanted for the band such as a year's break, side projects, healthier band dynamic, and healthier touring schedules all came to fruition.
It means that Jason followed the guitar parts on his bass and Hetfield doesn't like that. He prefers that the bassist makes scales to generate a counterpoint between the guitar and the bass.
