      Yeah, I have to agree actually. I also liked ReLoad. Both albums took a lot of criticism for being too experimental, but I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing. I wouldn't even label it as "selling out" since they didn't even sound like anyone else that time. They just went for more of a bluesy Black Sabbath-esque sound. I prefer that many times over the trainwreck that was St. Anger.

    • @97warlock
      @97warlock 5 років тому +11

      Load was a big mistake in their carreer musically, but it made them new fans on mtv & put them into the mainstream, they sorta had to because they could no longer be the heavy metal band because Pantera took it to anew level & Metallica really couldnt compete with the Power Pantera was putting out, but theres always a younger hungrier band on your heels that will one day take over, plus they were older & dont blame them for slowing down.

    • @lilbean3847
      @lilbean3847 5 років тому +18

      97warlock ismyname They were already in the mainstream with the Black Album. I think it has more to do with doing non stop touring previously that led them to a needed shift in direction. I doubt they felt threatened by Pantera lol

    • @97warlock
      @97warlock 5 років тому

      I just think it was like............ They Knew they couldnt compete with that kind of Velocity , Metallica had the fanbase, but .......THAT show......showed Metallica its time for a change because Heres this new band out there destroying the crowd, just like Metallica had been doing for years...... But due to constant touring Metallica couldnt hold that level of intensity like Pantera could, since Pantera were new on the scene & full of energy & killer riffs & one hell of a stage presense. So after nearly a decade Metallica "needed" to slow down just a bit.

    23:21 I'm totally confused by the sound of James' voice on Devil's Dance right here. For years I've heard that he blew out his vocal cords either at some point during the black album's tour or when recording So What? but here he is in 1995 and still has a damn good amount of grit in his delivery. When you see even the earliest Load-era live performances, his voice sounds 100% clean with basically zero grit. Did he just intentionally adapt his style to avoid further damage to his voice?

    • @blakfloyd
      @blakfloyd 4 роки тому

      @Andy Salter I appreciate the info. I've heard all of that before but I'm still confused about why he went from having about the same amount of grit in that 1995 performance as he did for the black album tour yet just a year later it was gone. Did he end up hitting a wall where he had to commit to clean vocals to avoid risking any further damage?

    • @blakfloyd
      @blakfloyd 4 роки тому

      @Andy Salter oh yeah, I've been familiar with their Eb live tuning since collecting their Load-era singles back in '98. Hearing pre-Load songs in Eb initially made my ears feel the same way my taste buds do when the drive thru fucks up and gives me Diet Coke. The sound of E standard was heavily ingrained in my ears at that point cuz I was learning a lot of Metallica stuff on guitar.

      There's a video that's like 28 or 30 minutes long on youtube from either '95 or '96 and it shows when the music media was first shown anything from Load and they have 'em all seated and roll the tape of 2x4 and there's just this chilling awkwardness among them just like how you described the fans in this video.

    I don’t mind Load and Reload, the change of pace was nice and there’s good jams there. I mean, thrash was dying by that point and Metallica could have totally disappeared and become a cult band like so many others. Just as well, they could have disbanded and become a band if the last like Pantera or a shell of their former selves like Sepultura when Max split. Times changed and bands changed, I think they went through it all perfectly.

      Shit Death Magnetic is there most progressive album since Justice.
      They ain't ever going to write like they did in 86 , it's impossible.
      They were young angry kids wanting to conquer the world, no band that lasts this long and as big as Metallica are playing anything like they did in they're youth.
      I hear people say " Slayer kept it going!" But they're last 4 albums were rubbish to my ears and had nothing on they're 80s stuff , same with Megadeth ( who put out Risk , Cryptic Writings, Youthinasia, Super Collider , 13 all albums that are Hard rock more then metal )
      I can't even listen to most 90s Anthrax as it just got boring though I love John Bush .
      The only band that has kept its music pretty consistent is Testament but they are like a pimple on the ass of Metallica in the scheme of success.
