    Shug, I started watching (all) of your videos a few months ago. For months, I couldn't figure out where/how I recognized you, until I found out you were a Ringling Bros Clown. That was it! I watched you live as a kid! Great memories, then and now!! I thank you for that! My 11 yr old daughter and I love to watch your videos , then get into the woods and apply the knowledge. She was so excited when you replied to one of her comments. Thank you for that! (And thank you for keeping it clean.) I never worry about both my children viewing your vids! All secure in Long Island New York! Paul. Wooooo Buddy!

    This is potentially your most important hammock video. I'm used to bridge hammocks. I just got my first gathered-end (Superior Gear) and instantly noticed the calf ridge phenomenon. Both my feet straddled it like I was riding a horse or motorcycle. I had no idea what to make of that. Thanks to your video, I get it, and know what to do about it. THANKS!

    I've been sleeping in a hammock for 30 years and had never experienced "calf ridge', until I saw this video. Kind of like when you become aware of your tongue. Now you can feel it in your mouth and pressing against the back of your teeth. Now when I sleep in my hammock, I look for it. Thanks a lot Shug! :)

    Hey Shugmeister, you've inspired me to lighten my gear as just NOW (after 40+ years of out-doorsiness and camping) I'm getting a little bit interested in backpack/bike/kayak camping. It started with a hammock. I'd considered all those things before but always wound up driving to my sites. Now I see how it is done.
    I just knocked 16.6 oz out of the hammock suspension. First try with no fancy parts or super-fly ropes. Next up, make a tarp to replace the ugly, loud, and heavy, but cheap and fairly functional _blue_ one. Then a bug net. and a stove...
    Thanks for all the vids. I lak the way you tarp. HB!
    also-I inquired earlier (on another vid I'm sure) about making our own stuff. I'll check out Jeff's site and leave you be on that one. thanks.

    This actually helped a lot!! I never really noticed a calf ridge at first in my Sawtooth big box hammock until after I had taken it up and down several times, and watching you, I realized, I was hanging just a little bit differently each time. Thanks Shug - can't wait to get my Chameleon!

      Melissa Oltman if you randomly select trees with distances of even a foot variation in distance apart each hang will be unique. Check out Shugs video covering structural ridgelines. It is not only the distance between trees that makes a difference but variations in the dwell angle of your hammock suspension system that will make the biggest differences in the amount of hammock tension or 'sag'. A structural ridgeline helped me no end once i got the sweet spot dialled in and gives predictable results everytime. You can roughly judge the 30° angle of your suspension system by making a pistol with your hand pointing your thumb vertical and your index finger horizontal.
      Following a line between the tips of both your thumb and index finger will be roughly 30° which you can hold alongside your hammock suspension to gauge the angle. Most beginners will find it easier to start out with pocket loop hammock suspension webs as you can count the pocket loops from the tree on each side to get the hammock perfectly centered. I have a Golden spot in my local park where i can hang the hammock perfectly everytime with this system but i always use a ridgeline unconditionally on new and unpredictable hangs with my whoopie slings and tree hugger straps.

    Think it may have been mentioned in a post, but I've experienced a calf ridge a couple times, when my RL was way too tight. I try to set up my hammock, where I can bend the RL, almost vertical, while laying in the hammock.A couple times, I didn't check it and had the calf issue, because the RL was too tight. When I readjusted, it went away. Not sure if this is a big issue, but another thought to throw into the pile. You went over proper set up, in the video and rightly so. It's so important to get your set up dialed in, for a great nights sleep! Set up, can be hard to grasp, for a lot of new hammockers. Thanks for your expertise, Shug!

    what I've found really works well for me, I sleep straight in my homemade hammock. I use a big Agnes insulated air mattress. I fill it to about 90% full. Then when I lay down I let it deflate to perfection. When it's at the right air pressure it gives me a little pillow and slight feet rise. It is also nice because I can sleep on the ground if needed. love your videos and advice!

    Last time I was out in my ducthware netless i had some major calf ridge. My feet also kept falling out of the hammock. Couldn't explain it, the thing had been so comfy up until then. The problem ended up being that I was set up on a pretty steep hill and couldn't tell that my head end was too high. I lowered the head end, raised the foot end, and also loosened my whoopie sling ridgeline just a couple inches, boom problem solved. And i couldn't help thinking "if only Shug could see me now" 😂 thanks for all your wisdom, hammock related and non hammock related.

    Love these educational videos of yours! I may just have the wrong hammock, indeed 😂 I always assumed that since I'm short (5´2) I would be okay with a shorter hammock, so I've been camping with the DD SuperLight, which is a shocking 8.8' short! Then I decided to replace my bed with a wall-mounted hammock, got one that's 11' and I have been sleeping like a snug burrito ever since. Last night I wanted to tinker with my DD hammock, and the only way of doing that was to hang it in my bedroom. Then I slept in it. The hang was good. The angles were good. I woke up during the night with the most awful pins and needles in my left arm AND leg. It was awful. The calf ridge was so bad that it cut off the circulation to my leg! Now I have used the Perfect Hang calculator to get the perfect angles and all of that in this hammock, then I tried to chill out in it. It's no good. I might be just 5'2 long, but gosh, I need a longer hammock! Who would've thought?!

    Awesome video! It addressed something I have been experiencing and noticed as of late. My HG incubator 20 full length was pushing back against my foot box to cause a different lay then when in hammock without the UQ. Before I realized this I went from a standard width to a wide hammock hoping to correct this. It did until UQ was on and then the same feeling. I loosened suspension on foot box side of UQ and had one of the best nights sleep ever with a UQ!! Thanks for all you do Shug!!

    Shug you hit the nail on the head. It seems a lot of people are buying 9' hammocks and well my wife is 5'2" and she likes it but no way could I I'm 6'4" and like you my 11' hammock is great. I made my own and my wife's and both are gathered ends the way you showed with a t-shirt and laying on an angle I have almost zero calf ridge. Also I find with my ridge line it's perfect but if I remove it I can never get it setting right. Thank god I watched a ton of your vids first :D whoooo buddy you saved me a lot of hassle and will never go back to the ground. I also tried something this winter trip where I used an emergency blanket on my hammock with a 10 degree bag on top of that and my -20 with 10 degree inside on top of it all. It worked great so now I can loan my underquilt to the wife so she might come along and try the cold. Got down to -25 at night and slept like a baby thanks to your Nalgene bottle trick.

    Shug, What you call "calf ridge" I've called "heel pressure" (hammock lack of support betwixt the butt and heels). Made my heels (too much pressure) and back of knees hurt (no support). Some of your mentioned solutions helped: Elevated foot end, sleep pad and pillow under knees. The latter worked best. A fat inflatable REI pillow is perfect for me. My Dutch 11' hexon single nest also helped.

      I almost always have a Thermarest sit-pad under my feet. Old heel injuries.

    thought I would invest a dd double skinned hammock and hated it.
    after weeks of searching no one slags dd hammocks.
    Finally I have a name for the problem.

    I'm a long time hammock camper, since 1991 or so, I haven't really experienced the "calf ridge" however, the last 3 years or so I have experienced a 20lb Jack Russel terrier sharing my hammock, helps to keep me a little warmer on the cooler nights but, man does it get hard to change positions in the middle of the night. Got any advice on that Shug? Love the vids, thanks.

    thank you Shug's. I've got some things to try now. redoing my gathered ends and making a wookie like underquilt for my home made blackbird..
    I have the exact same Incubator as you (literally ;-) and I'm hoping it works for me with my Chameleon. I still want to get my homemade blackbird dialed in with an underquilt since it was the first "more complicated" hammock I made (I'm rather attached to it). I'm going to combine a couple Costco down throws and will see that to a section of fabric (like the wookie). worst case, I will try putting things under my knees.
    happy hanging brother!

    One thing I've found in a symmetrical hammock like a DoubleNest if I'm struggling with my butt not being where it needs to be is to rotate to lay the other direction (if I was head to the right and feet left, swap to head left and feet right) and I've found that to suddenly get me exactly where I need to be for a good lay

    Thanks shug, I moved my hammock a couple inches up on the foot end... I would tend to submarine down the hammock as I slept, but never bothered to try to fix it(it also lessened the calf ridge but that doesn't really bother me).

  • @alf3553
    @alf3553 7 років тому

    Good information Shug. Thanks
    If you climb in your hammock and you have some ridges, sometimes you can just sweep them out with your hand. Put your hand by your butt and push the material out to the side. I have a Blackbird XLC and sleep better in it then my bed.

  • @leoncarpenter958
    @leoncarpenter958 7 років тому

    Shug, I started in the hennessy. I didn't ever have a calfridge however I found adjusting underquilts difficult with the bug nets. I got a gathered in one form Dutch (with knotty mods) for christmas...I get me the best gifts. I'm a side sleeper and found I kicked out the side of it so I sewed some 1oz hexon over the foot end. Last time I went out I found I got a very long trench with my feet on the edge and my shoulders on the other but laying close to the same direction as the ridge line. That probably doesn't compute but think of it as opposite sides high.

    As someone setting out on the hammock journey, this was actually quite fascinating. Or should I say, setting out again, as years ago I picked up a Hennessy but was distracted by other things and have never used it other than to set it up once to see how it worked. With tent camping becoming problematical (I hate crawling on my old hands and knees to get in and out), I'm going to try the alternative, so this video and others of yours are a big help -- and certainly not ho-hum viewing (there may be some hoes and some hums, but never do they merge, lol).

    • @shugemery
      @shugemery  7 років тому
