Thanks for this! Heading out in sub-zero temps this weekend and planning on layering - this makes me feel like my plan will work fine, and using my sit pad under my feet is a brilliant idea that I would have never thought of.
Glad to hear that. Layering works real well. Be toasty and don't forget to think about your camp clothing! ua-cam.com/play/PLahaAdtfX9ZILLkB8CUeCgGKr7TF7haoD.html
Dude. I just love you. I never get tired of your videos. Seriously. They are so well done and so very informative. I’m a hammock camper because of you! I know nothing about making videos for UA-cam. Still, the time and effort you put into them is not lost on me. May you and your family have a happy, healthy, and blessed Christmas and New Year! Can’t wait to see the next video! Cheers!
Great stuff, Shug! I came across that chart from EE the other day when I had the same question about layering. I successfully layered a 20-degree UQ with a 40-degree UQ this weekend and got down to single digits with no issues.
Bag in a bag , bulk in a pulk, nod in a pod, I was paying attention. I have 2 hammock gear bottom quilts and stacking them has crossed my mind . I will definitely try it now , thanks for the video .
Nice vid. Made it through a record low long weekend of -47 F when I was a teenager with a 3 bag setup. A 30 deg synthetic inside a 20 deg down inside an army surplus down bag. I'm sure I compressed the inner bag some but had the hoods cinched down so that only my nose poked through the inner bag. Other than a cold nose, I was good to go.
Great info! I found that layering sleep systems, just like layering clothes is da beast. I usually have a 20 degree bag I sleep in, and lay another sleeping bag underneath. Never had an underquilt. Ony my ridgerunner, this weekend, I will put my thermarest inflatable in the pad sleeve, then lay a 30 degree bag underneath my 20 degree. Then, for my feet...I found the ULTIMATE item to keep my feet warm....I use my thermal insert liners from my Pac boots. Whooo hooooooo yeah, buddy! Happy trails!
Thanks Shug! I've been thinking of layering my quilt sets (40 & 20) and now I've got some tips to keep in mind! Camping out over Christmas I reached my new low, 19 degrees with my 20 degree quilts only, and was still plenty warm! Now I just need to beef up my gear for when I'm outside the hammock, that was the only time I was cold. Have a great new year!
Great info there Shug! That jacket around the foot box looks rather compressed, but it is a great idea. I can't seem to find a down jacket like that in a 4 or 5xl. They think that "Big Boys" don't do the outdoors I suppose. Sleeping bags are hard to find for a 6'5" "Big Boy" as well. Top quilt and under quilt are my life savers and I add a fleece quilt when I go colder. I don't see anything temps below 15* in my area, so that generally gets me good. Thanks for being Shug! You are the best and most entertaining source of information on hammocking on the web.
A bit but still warms the feet. Less if I just slip it over TQ footbox and not around the hammock. www.bigdudeclothing.com/big-jackets-big-coats/shopby/standardsizex--5xl/?msclkid=165679047e4f1d9081d4252e4cc24b87&USA_GEN_BM_Jackets&B5xl%20%2Bjackets&BM_5XL_Jackets
on my first army Bivi in the woods in late autumn i learned a lot from my instructors. one of the best tips was: when it's cold, you should strip down! put your clothes into your sleeping bag (or sleep system). So when you wake up you can put on some warm clothes. and boy was i glad for that tip. even if sleeping itself was a bit cold. getting up and into warm clothes was so good. while others didn't try it and woke up cold and had no easy way of getting waem again.
Such great timing to put out this vid (for me)! I was a bit nervous about layering my quilt and my sleeping bag on an upcoming mid-January trip in NH. This gave me a bit more confidence in the system I was considering. Thanks again, Shug!
Car camping in the winter I have a large sleeping bag and a smaller one that fits inside. I have been trying several different hammocks here at the house, but I just can't seem to get the "hang" of it. The amok and bridge designs I think would work better for me. I wish I could rent them instead of spending several hundred to find they end up in the closet with all the others. Living in the Southwest desert, there are not a lot of trees out here anyway. I could take a hammock frame and assemble it when I park.
Thanks so much my friend. I have enjoyed your videos tremendously. Me and my father have just about everything we need for our hammock trip coming up. Just as soon as it quits raining here in alabama. We have nearly watched all your videos and love every one. I think it's amazing how you explain in detail everything you do. And the comedy just adds to the enjoyment. Keep the videos coming and you have a couple of southern boys behind you here in midwest alabama. Thank you so much. Oh, we're fixing to try our hand at a couple of wood stoves like the one you use. Wish us luck. Lol
You keep talking about down which is great. We can do all this layering with wool blankets too. A lil heavier but a lil more affordable for some of us. Great video Shug.
Shug is the only clown that doesn't *totally* creep me out. Hope to see you out there sometime in 2019. I'll be the guy with the respectful nod, and a knowing grin.
Well took you all friggin year to answer every question I had about adding underquilts. Great, yeeeeeaaaaaa!!! Happy New Year and wishing you many, many good things.
Your channel has gotten me out in the cold for the first time. Montana early fall temp 12 degrees. I’m still working out my system as I transition from ground sleeping to hammock. I’m converting my Hennessy classic entry to zip using a cottage vender you mentioned. I also had Dream Hammock make me an ultra light Darian which I am currently trying to dial in for lighter pack weight. I have a Sierra Sniveler which I have used for years and the Jacks are better nest which was made to fit the bottom entry Hennessy Hammock. Recently I purchased the Greylock 4 to beef up my warmth for winter camping. I still felt a little chill in the early morning which I think is due to improper attachment of the underquilt. I will try the shock extender and see if that helps. I haven’t settled into the right setup for me yet but I’m having fun as I go. Thanks for inspiring me to get out and enjoy the beautiful winter landscape. There is nothing like a hot drink in the hammock as the sun rises.
Thanks, Shug. It’s a great way to get more bang for the buck. I couple my 40 deg HG Phoenix and 20 deg HG Incubator but I’ve been layering the Incubator on the outside. I’ll experiment and put it on the inside. Thanks again!
Whoooo Buddy))) I have doubled my 20 F top quilt with the 50 F summer top quilt and it works good. Never tried it yet with the under quilt. I've seen the same comments on hammock forums. They just had a question about favorite UA-cam channels and you easily had the most votes. I just started a new closed facebook group called ( Backpacking UA-cam Channels Group ) I already have many channels in it like Spiguyver Backpacking, Adventure Archives, Backcountry Exposure, and others. Happy New Year!
Happy New Year! I'm new to hammock camping and have learned so much from your videos. I don't backpack but I camp off of my motorcycle, which I think is as tough finding space for all the gear. You sure make these fun.
Quality vid mate and great advice, my DIY synthetic only gets me to 5deg English money, bump it up with wool blanket. Down UQ and TQ next project. Keep doing what you're doing mucker always a good watch
I have only been out in 0 degree in my back yard , but want to do a deep winter camp. i use 0 degree kelty down sleeping bag, just turn upside down and use as quilt, also use sit pad in foot box. thanks for the great info -Stay warm and Happy new year!
Outstanding and informative video. Playing with your gear and stretching the limits safely is half the fun. Take care and wishing you an your family a Happy New Years. Al
I have 2 Enlightened Equipment Revelation and I love 'em. My 0 degree save me on the AT last March. No more sleeping bags for me. Same with my Exped Winterlite pad. Quilts are great for us ground bound folks too.
Excellent Shug! I always wondered why nobody talks about layering sleeping bags 🤗 that article on the EE website was how I was able to figure out my sleeping bags layering process 🤗🤗🤗 Thanks for the awesome video and Happy New Year 🎉🎉🎉
I know what I have to do to sleep in -42C and my hats off to you Shug for doing it in a hammock. It's impressive. Tell the gang about eye protection in sub zero.
I was thinking about layering two pads in my warbonnet. But the idea of a pad and my underquilt together is interesting too. Thanks for a great and informative vid and Happy New Year.
🥳 Happy New Year, Shug, Lord of Lollygag! Tfs your layered UQ and TQ system. Have a fantastic 2019 and inspire me with more of your grand adventures and informative videos! Take care my friend, Nikki.
Thanks for the tips Shug! I’ve been a bit apprehensive about heading out into the Maine wilderness this time of year, but I’m sure I’ll give it a go and be warm to boot with this advice.
Would you happen to have all the working parts to a hammock set up that you dont use. Maybe a really good price or first born grandchildren. Lol. I need to see if it would hurt my back before investing in new. I could pay some. This is all I think about since I started watching your videos. a whole lot of beautiful places and Wood's here in Tennessee. :-) if it didn't work for me I could pay it forward.. Grand proposal, I know but really I'm not that crazy. Just have a few good spring/summers left in me.🤗🕊💙
Happy New Year to you too, Shug! Thanks for putting a smile on my face while informing me on all things hammock-ey, and more. I hope your 2019 rocks! (or at least sways in a gentle breeze) 👍
Great video Shug. I rang in the new year near banff alberta at -17°c. Just thought I'd share that with you, dont know why... I like to use a down sleeping bag between the hammock and the underquilt for a little extra warmth.
Eh Happy New Year Shush. Thanks for making me laugh! Also I was just playing around and tried doubling up my under quilts the other night with a full length Hammock Gear 30° and a Greylock 4 on the outside. Got into the teens and it was very much overkill, I was plenty warm. Keep on doing what you do, I'm a big fan, thank you.
Wiggy’s ground pad between layers of Warbonette XLC a good start then Hammock Gear UQ and TQ as needed. No shifting of Wiggys pad between the layers of the Warbonette because it is large and spreads out.
Have a Happy NYE Shug . Yeah I know you don't indulge :) After buying and using the MSS one winter in the single digits with mixed results. I now use a a Therm-a-Rest MondoKing XXL under my -20 BA Elk Park and INSIDE the Elk park "pad sleeve" I have a Nemo Cosmo Air pad . Then I put my Nemo Strato Loft Down sleeping bag inside of the Elk Park BA . Now this 68 Y.O has slept warm and cozy into the Negative TEENS. Have NOT been below - 20 but once , ole Gubs was warm a comfy :) A bunch of wt , but after pulling in a few miles and the sun goes down, staying SAFE and warm is very important to this old vet !!!! Have used the BA King quilt in combo W the BA bag and the Nemo . I will """NEVER""", ever sleep on the ground when under 50F again if it does not have a PAD SLEEVE !!!! A real cold , chasing the pad all night KILLER !!! Hope you and yours has a Happy / Healthy 19 !! ........ G
I've stacked and I've stuffed and got down to very very cold temps! I've never seen it explained better though. Well done Sir!
Thank you.
Thank God! Shug to the rescue. Starting to run out decent things to watch on UA-cam. Happy New Year to ya Shug!
Party up and on.
Thanks......a little Shug is all you need to brighten your day.....or night......Happy New Year!

I thank ya' for that.

I've had good luck stacking quilts via the same method- shorter quilt on the outside. Great video as always!
Seems to make sense but sorta depends on the UQ combo I suppose.
Excellent Job with this one Shug! a classic
Hope it helps.

I really like your perspective on winter camping. It’s just a lot different from where I am it’s interesting.
Thanks. Things morph as time moves on.

You could buy an Amok or bridge to try and return if you don't like it. Warbonnet and Amok have good return policies
I hope you and your family had a very Merry Christmas; and the best of New Years. Thank you for all the information and entertainment over the years.

I meant during day time travel. during sleep I use a blindfold as well.@@shugemery

You would have been good in just the Greylock 4 in those teens. Whoooooo Buddy))))
@@shugemery definitely
Wiggy’s ground pad between layers of Warbonette XLC a good start then Hammock Gear UQ and TQ as needed. No shifting of Wiggys pad between the layers of the Warbonette because it is large and spreads out.
Never tried a Wiggy's but seem well respected.
Wiggy's is making some hammock gear too. A bit on the heavy side, but seriously warm...
Happy new year Shug. Looking foward to a few more tips on hammock camping in the new year.
Party up.....

Very good and informative video !!
Thank you.
Hope you and yours has a Happy / Healthy 19 !! ........ G
