I just want to say thank you for all the videos you’ve done Shug. You’ve eased the hammock learning curve a great deal for this camper! Your videos are a lot of fun and the knowledge and experience you share has made a real difference in the way I’ve learned to approach hammock camping. Thanks for all your hard work!
Shug keep up the good work. Hammocking is on the rise and in no small part to your support. You have shown how to tie the marlin spike several times and are still willing to take the time to show those new to the hobby. That is what makes you an icon for hammocking.
Pure gold, the origin of the double early, early. Those stupid things are where you find your best friends. Thanks for sharing and bringing me extra smiles to the day.
Can’t tell you how much I love and appreciate your videos. I’ve learned so much watching you. Watched most of your hammock vids multiple times as they not only inform, but are incredibly entertaining to boot! Thank you so much!!!!
I regularly show young people how to hammock, if I could get half my points across as simply and as clearly as you, I'd be happy. Thanks again for all your help.
Shug you just brought some tears of joy to my eyes. Haven’t been in a hammock since we lost Marty. Thanks for wearing that hat. This would have tickled Marty. He really liked the review you did on the Snipe hammock a while back. Much respect for you man!
i have a collection of your music on my phone and when im at the camp just chillin in my home made hammock i listen to high on a mountain its a great song ...thank you for all the videos and great music
Great video. Thanks especially for showing the marlin spike hitch in slow motion. I really appreciate all of your videos. I always learn something new everytime I watch one of them.
Options are always a good thing. And, thank you for revisiting the "Early" thing. Nice to know the back-story, even when there isn't really one. Now, get out there and do some hangin' in the trees!!
Brad Pitt played Early Grayce in Kalifornia (1993). God bless the internet. You mentioned it, and I said "Yeah, I remember that.... but for the life of me I can't remember which movie that was."
Hey Shug, will be sleeping in the hammock once this darn hurricane passes. Planning on several days without electricity, so will have plenty of practice time. Great video needed a refresher.
Thanks for the video, as always! This night was a quiet one in the woods, with ZERO wind and a gentle rain on and off. It felt safe to take the "porch-mode" to the extreme by mounting the ridge of the tarp insanely high (and the foot-end even higher) and then fixing the all lines to other trees. From a reclined position I got a great view of the surroundings. Didnt feel as if the tarp was up at all. (Oh, and by the way; I tried the idea from an earlier video of securing the pillow from a line to preventing it from disappearing down to the back . Two words: "Thank you!")
I have been camping for forty-five years under tarps in a rain forest and I learned something. Get to try them in Roughly thirty-six hours depending on How EARLY I get up.Love ya
Great video. One comment on the half pitch though. I have had rain start falling while in this mode and because the un-pitched end is upside down over the pitched end, the inside of the tarp will get wet on the un-pitched side. To remedy this I place the un-pitched end underneath the pitched end and steak it down. It's not as tight as going over the top of the tarp but if you are a heavy sleeper and don't wake up before it's already raining it helps.
Hey Shug! Just wanted to say thank you for all the videos you put out. I never realize how many tip I retain from your videos until I'm out in the BWCA and I'm faced with a unique hang. Keep up the great work it is sincerely appreciated.
Whoooo buddy! Nice to see you Shug, hope your summer is going well with shows and firs etc, hope to see you out in the hammock early, in the fall. EARLY.
Just lovely! So I got a hammock from your buddy stormcrow I had a malfunction in it and they were really super to work with. They're really making things right! I live in Utah but I'd really love to make it up there for the frozen butt hang you all seem like real genuine people even if you are a little touched
Something that I like to do with a half-pitch is I will use long lines and an extra stake. I run my lines back across the top, around the stakes and up to the hammock. If I have to put it out I pull my lines from the hammock and tie them to the extra stake I put in the ground next to the hammock. You have to have stakes with the little lip on the top. Also, when I hear "early" I think of Early Cuyler from squidbillies...love it.
Great video Shug! I usually don't mess around very much with my tarp setup very often, but I have done it several times like you showed. Now I know what the double early is about. 😅 Last weekend I went backpacking with my wife, but when we hiked out in the dark I set my camera down at the trailhead. 😬 No more camera for now! 😢

Hey Shug gotta say another great video, not having done much camping growing up and not unsuccessful outings than good ones is discouraging, but you videos have given me the confidence to go out and try things again. Practice with your equipment in a controlled area. 0-dark:30 @ 8500 ft when it's starting to get drizzly is no place to learn how to pitch your tarp or any part of your camp.
What do you do in severe weather? Tarps billow, like a sail. Dome tents flatten. I love hammocking, but it's a worry. I've lost a couple tarps in high winds.
Happened once. It was so still and thunder was cracking. Could tell something fierce was coming. I took down my hammock and and all my insulation and put it all back in my pack and donned my rain gear and hunkered down by a large boulder. It hit hard with sideways rain. Like a lot of big violent storms it passed quickly. My tarp stayed up and faired well. Set back up and had a good night. Have to take heed as Mother Nature rules.

Shug, first off I would like to say that I'm a huge fan I have two of your shirts that I wear just about everywhere and they've been al across the world from Norway to Japan. Besides that what are your tips of warmer camping around 90 degrees and about 70% humidity? Just curious, you've mentioned a few tips when you were in NC, but I would enjoy your in-depth discussion on the topic. Thanks for all your pointers, I planned on doing the same thing when I hit your age.
Thanks for the support x2. I just do my best in hot weather. Try to catch a breeze. Wet cloth around neck. Stay hydrated. But I really don't camp in hot weather all that much as Summer is my work season. So really never have discussed it much on video.

@@shugemery Only orange marigolds??? No lilies or other flowers. I shouldn't blame the crows, sorry crows! The deer are polite and step around things when they tour the garden. But I know THEY are just WAITING!!!!
Shooooge, off topic for tarp hanging but I recently got a pack it gourmet starter pack after seeing them in your videos so much and have now diversified away from solely mountain house. Good stuff. They should give you a sponsor code for shooge subscribers for a one time discount 😜
Sometimes when I hang with just our Turtledog stand, the sun will beat down hard on the tarp. Is there a way we can incorporate one them car window sun shades/Reflectix into the tarp? Thanks.
Maybe I missed where ya said it, but what’s the little extra loop in the guy line for near where you make the marlin spike knot/(hitch?) for your ground stake?
I have a question/request. And I know this isn't the time of year to ask this so no need to point that out to me. You and others have shown how you set up your tarp. But I've never seen any vids of how to tear down your tarp and hammock setup when it's raining. And more specifically how do you store your tarp and attach it to your pack so it doesn't soak the rest of your gear? Seen lots of posts about putting tarp up first and taking it down last. And strapping your tarp to the outside of your pack. But what does that look like? Do you just strap the tarp in the snake skins to yourpack? Or do you shove it into another bag and stuff it into a pocket? Fortunately I've been able to pick and choose my hiking/camping outings so never had to deal with this. But I'm sure the day is coming! Thanks!
I take down all my gear under my tarp in the rain. Then take down my tarp, put it in the stuff sack and pop it in my pack. All my down and dry stuff are in a plastic bag in my pack.
I'm glad the thing with that word is cleared up because I too was infected with that particularly maladaptive vocalization. My wife insisted that I get an MRI with contrast to rule out Early (EARLY!) Onset Dementia. Oh, and that fellow, Spassio, is quite contentious. You should have told him that you'll neither show him a slow, tarp pitch, nor a fast, tarp pitch. But, instead, you'll show him a half-fast tarp pitch. Cheeky bloke.
Hi Shug, I’ve been watching your channel for a while and have data mined your older videos as best I can. Maybe I missed it but what are your thoughts on summer under quilts? I just finished a 9 day bike camping trip where night temps were in the mid 60’s. Too cold to go without an UQ but too warm for the 20 degree down UQ. I Took a synthetic UQ bought online, Hecho in China, but was bulky as heck on my bike. Any advice?
A good 40º or 50º would be the ticket in my opinion. Vent if needed. Just got a very light TQ from Jacksrbetter.com Footbox opens up so you can use it more like a blanket......www.jacksrbetter.com/product/ultralight-shenandoah-quilt-40f/

Sometimes when I hang with just our Turtledog stand, the sun will beat down hard on the tarp. Is there a way we can incorporate one them car window sun shades/Reflectix into the tarp? Thanks.
I have never felt the need to try that but seems like it would work for ya'.
Cool socks!!!!!!
I stand tall in them there socks.
Maybe I missed where ya said it, but what’s the little extra loop in the guy line for near where you make the marlin spike knot/(hitch?) for your ground stake?
Just a loop I tie in the line to quick stake. I do show it on the video.
Automated Like for all of Shug's videos!
Automated thank you backatcha......
All my down and dry stuff are in a plastic bag in my pack.
shugemery thank you. I hope to never have to do this but it is inevitable. I appreciate your guidance.
you still teach me about it 🤪 merci beaucoup 😊 xxx
Salut!
Merci mon ami 🤪
Great video ✌️
Many thanks.
Thanks for the video, Shug. Always learn something from you. You got some guns 💪 on you for an old fart. Haha. Whoooo buddy!
Push ups. Trying to get my shoulder strong again. I just released an old fart!
Sebastiani wears pants too tight and adds to his contentiousness.
@@shugemery Aha!
Just got a very light TQ from Jacksrbetter.com
Footbox opens up so you can use it more like a blanket......www.jacksrbetter.com/product/ultralight-shenandoah-quilt-40f/
Bought one! Thank you for all your great info.
Hope it does ya' right.
No ridgeline on this tarp, just tired of from the ends? Have you found doing it this way puts undue stress on the tarp?
I don't feel it does. Think tarps were designed to hang off the end d-rings.
@@shugemery I've always used a ridgeline but sometimes it would be easier without one. Maybe I'll give it a try. Thanks!
Nice one Mr . E . I hear ya , I hate having those Airborne Army worms raining down on me , especially those hard charge'n Ranger types :D
Good one!
Gréât vidéo Shug. Yo the man. Thanks and take care.
Appreciate it.
I always worry about those clove hitches on the line tensioner coming undone and losing my bungee cords. Any problems like that for you?
Propelt tied never had one come loose. You could always put an end knot on the shockcord.
Properly. Ooops.
Where did you get the marlin stakes? the ones on Amazon look heavy.
The tarp stakes are from Warbonnetoutdoors.com
They may not sell that exact kind anymore though.
Your the God damn man Shug. ✊
I am A man 🤝 Whooooo Buddy)))))
Do you think you could get the Maple King to do the early thing too????
Him and I been doing it for years!
Thumbs up!!!

His pants are too tight.
