Very good topic. My CPAP battery died one night and I had to sleep on my side to live. The only way I could get comfortable was to double up a torso length self-inflating pad and put it under my hips. This seemed to give me a flat side lay and I’m still here 👍🏼

Ha! Nice vid. I have been mostly side-sleeping in my hammock every single night for the past 6 years. It's great. I will never go back to sleeping in a bed. Excellent demos, explanations and gear coverage - just what I needed... but then it reminded me of the golfing joke... George got a new job. His fellow employees always met for a round of golf every Saturday. They asked George to meet them at 10AM on Saturday morning. George replied that he would love to meet them, but he may be 10 minutes late. On Saturday morning George was there at exactly 10AM. He golfed right handed and won the round. Next Saturday rolls around, and George says that he will be there, but he may be 10 minutes late again. He shows up right on time, golfs left handed, and wins the round. This continues for the next few weeks, with George always saying that he may be 10 minutes late, and then always winning the round golfing, either left or right handed. The other employees are getting tired of this, and decided to ask him what the deal was. They said, "George, every Saturday you say you may be ten minutes late. You never are. Then you show up and golf with either right handed or left handed, and always win. What is up with that?" George replies, "Well, I am a very superstitious kind of guy. Every Saturday when I wake up, I look over at my wife. If she is sleeping on her left side, I golf left handed. If she is sleeping on her right side, I golf right handed." "Well," one of the employees questioned, "What happens if she is laying on her back or font?" George replies, "Then I am 10 minutes late!"

Im a side sleeper, and for parallel lay, i have my hammock strapped up tight and flat. I also dont use an underquilt or sleeping pad, but just modify a LONG SIZE somewhat roomy/wide sleeping bag (not mummy shape) with a hole in the bottom (to thread the carabiner of the sleeping bag through) and have this around my hammock. Not using an underquilt saves a lot of weight, and it is still really comfortable (IMO). Only problem is that the hammock pushes out and create a small gap on the top of the sleeping bag, so it allows some air circulation. This can be adjusted with the cord in the opening of the sleeping bag, and is actually a good thing in warm seasons, but it could be an issue if its cold. Especially if you dont wear a sweater or something.

Hey Shug. I sleep in my hammock all the time in my house. I've discovered that I get a better lay when I position my pillow under my butt. I don't use a pillow under my head. I've even been able to sleep on my back a lot better. Sounds weird but so am I. I use a gathered end hammock.
Glad to se your shaping up nicely with the shoulder..A side sleeper yep..but not always..i have a woodsman xl..which is similar to the warbonnet..lots of roooommmm...keep them vids a commin dude...just love emm !!!
I'm a side sleeper in a bed or on the ground. In a hammock, I sometimes sleep on my back (only place that's comfortable for me) and sometimes on my side. I'm seeing you've discovered my biggest issue with side sleeping in my hammock - the fabric flapping around my face. I have a couple solutions. Normally I use solution 1 which is to sleep at a 45 degree, mostly on my side but facing just enough upward to keep my face out of that fabric. Solution 2 is to put my pillow kind of resting on the very edge - this works best right up until I wake up and the pillow is on the ground and my face is buried in hammock. Solution 3 is one I'm thinking about DIY'ing for next season - a tie out to keep that spot pulled out.
I can only sleep on my side and I roll from one side to the other at least 5-6 times during the night regardless of what I'm sleeping on. For this reason I resisted hammocks for a LONG time despite primarily camping dispersed in areas where finding a good "level" spot for a tent really limited my options. Now I kick myself for not going with a hammock years earlier! I use an Equip "two person" hammock with an added ridgeline. They're easy to find and they're super cheap but you will have to upgrade the suspension. I use tree straps and Whoopie Slings that I picked up on eBay. I was out a couple weeks ago with a Hammock Gear Econ 20 and a homemade top quilt fashioned from 2 Costo Black Diamond down throws sewn together. It got down to 23° one night but despite my habitual tossing and turning I slept comfortably and was toasty warm. For anyone out there who is a side sleeper like me and have been reluctant get off the ground I would strongly encourage you to give it a try! P.S. Thanks for all of the great videos and advice Shug! Always looking forward to the next!

The prettiest girl could not say stomach sleeper sexy . omggg. Hope i never hear those words again. Love all your hammocks. Great video! And bro that chick from the movie the village needed one of those..😀🙏💤
At least seven years ago, I bought an ENO Double Nest hammock to go camping in South Florida. I decided to test hang in my bedroom and figure out how to hang a hammock at home, instead of trying to figure it out in a campsite. I bought two heavy-duty eye bolts and put them in my bedroom ceiling into a roof joist, then clipped caribiiners into them and hung the hammock. First night's sleep was the best night's sleep I had in years. Same thing next night. I'm on my third hammock now and haven't slept in a bed in years, except when on the road in a hotel. I have sleep apnea and can't tolerate a CPAP so I sleep exclusively on my side to reduce the apneas and the ENO Double Nest is pretty good for that. I'm a big guy (over 6 feet tall and about 250 pounds) and I don't have a problem with it. I tried an ENO Single Nest, but it didn't work for side sleeping for me--too confined. I'd like to try a bridge hammock someday because I'd really like the option of stomach sleeping too, but what I have now has worked well for years. I don't miss a mattress at all. So far, probably somewhere between two and three thousand nights spent sleeping in a hammock. I may never buy another mattress as long as I live.
I toss and turn as I sleep. Actually, it's more of a slow rotisserie. 😀 Currently, I'm using a Hennessy Jungle Exp., double bottom. I'm not sure of the fabric dimensions. I've found going a little more than the recommended 30° lay works for side sleeping. I do like being able to use the hammock side as a sort of "body pillow". I can catch my top knee in a fold of the side and keep it level with my hip. Best advice- go out and sleep in your hammock!! Go use it. Sleep in it for a few nights in a row. It's going to take nights to get used to the lay. We're all used to sleeping on a flat(ish) mattress. We all have that "groove" in the matress our bodies have created over time. Overnighting occasionally in a hammock doesn't give enough "practice". Give it a long weekend to a week of hammock snoozing. Better yet, quit your job and run away to woods for a month or two. 😀
Been sleeping in a hammock for a month . I tossed my 20 year old bed so I could remodel my bedroom and decided to just spend a few months in my hammock. I actually sleep better, stay up and moving during the day and fall asleep faster at night.
I side sleep in my hammy probably 90% of the night. I have found that if I have a really bad lay in my hammock due to having to settle for a not so great hang place, that I can get a wonderful flat lay just by side sleeping and curling up a bit. I am short, so I can do the fetal position thing. I do often back sleep in my hammock, which I never do in a bed or on the ground. I have a DIY bridge hammock that works great for side sleeping too. Nothing wrong with "testing" out hammocks for their sleepability.
New hammocker here, and full time home side sleeper. In a bed I sleep with one leg straight and the other bent, it seems to relieve pressure on my lower back. This is hard to do in a hammock. Couple questions, do you notice your ankles/feet getting pressured while on your side? How about rolling over? I assume you have to switch orientation? Side sleeping have an effect on calf ridge? This video is so timely, spent all week researching side sleeping.
This is more a less a demo and I don't sleep on my side long enough to know but imagine they would. Rolling over in a hammock is a bit of work. As a back sleeper I am very still so less work for me. Calf ridge...think that is not an issue as the calves are tucked up higher. A pillow under relieves that either way.
So I saw the graphic or a box of the beloved Nobler, a paint scheme that appeared to be inspired by Ms. America (the unlimited Reno competitor), and possibly a Ringmaster hanging there on a wall? I know, this was about hammock sleeping, but there is a lot to look at! Thanks
We need a music video from you, Shug! Just like a solid 10mins of you playing would be perfect! I'm also fairly certain most of us would watch you do just about anything! Haha!
Hey Shug im 6'4" and my 9'4" hammock hurts my knee joints can sleep well how big of a hammock should I buy to keep from my knees from feeling hyperextened your a tall guy your self any good advice to give me?
You sure do have some nice gear. Some with your name on it. That's rad, like a Celtic bossman. I dig the Amok. Mostly because I prefer to sleep doing a headstand in my hammock while swinging. Just kidding. I sleep in a hotel. Seriously though...why leave out the headstand sleepers? It's not fair. Egalitarianism now!
thank you for making this video. I have a HG Phoenix and a Blackbird. I have lots of trouble with keeping the HG suspension over my feet, so I get cold at night. Suspension ends up under my feet and that lets all the heat out because it warps the underquilt fit. Any solutions other than buying a Warbonnet underquilt?
Look into the Triangle-Thingies as you can set your suspension differently. Maybe just be more aware of it?...this video may give some insight....ua-cam.com/video/D9N3KkV5Zf4/v-deo.html
Shug, i need your help!! I just ordered my first "real" hammock from dutchware. I ordered the standard netless 11' x 58". I've been sleeping in an ENO doublenest for years while backpacking but i think it's time to finally upgrade. Super excited to get it, but after digging around on hammockforums.net, I'm a little concerned it might not be wide enough (I'm 6'1" and about 200lbs). I know based on your videos you tend to lean towards the 58"-60" width range, do you think this will be wide enough for me? (I know width preference is totally subjective, just curious about your thoughts). I've never slept in anything other than my old ENO so I really have no idea what it's going to feel like. Thanks!!
Hi Shug, im a Hammock camper from germany and i love your videos and appreciate your great experience. I´ve been using a Hennessy Hammock for the last years and it was pretty good, i even could sleep on my stomach (eventhough it was not easy). Right now i am planning a big hike (roughly 2 years) at the Great Trail in Canada, but i have to figure out how to survive the winter because until now the coldest temperature i ever had was like -5 degree celsius (23 Fahrenheit) in estonia. The Hammock im gonna use is the Mosquitohammock (Mosquitohammock.com) . So for -30 degree or colder, my idea is an underquilt with 500g of dauns, a Thermarest Ridge Rest Solar and a big sleeping bag like the Valandre Neo Odin or a good Topquilt but i am not sure which one. Since i have at least a year left to plan all of this, i am gonna experiment this winter but i would like to hear your opinion on my ideas. I hope this is not too long :D Greetings and thank you!
I don't think that will keep you warm enough in -30º temps. 500 grams is about 17 ounces of down. Might get you to -5º but a lot of variables there. Good your going to test and see. Make sure your warm when you get in to sleep. Good luck.
What's the best coverage underquilt for the warbonnet xlc? I really like to re-adjust in the night and I want something that's going to keep me covered if I roll over because adjusting things in the night can really suck the heat out of the sleeping bag

Very helpful. I’m a side sleeper. Quick hiking boot ? I have planter fasciitis and getting ready to do a 25 mile three day three night on 80 and wondering if Solomon hiking boots or trail shoes which one will offer more support? Or if you have another brand like Hoka
I had a bout with planter and heel spur. Salomon Quest GTX did me right. Can hike all day in them and still comfortable at camp. My ankles are too shot for trail shoes.
Thanks! I’m looking at those and the Salomon speedcross shoes. I don’t have terrible ankles but we carry extra food and gear spreading the weight for the scouts we hike with. Time for an upgrade in shoes. Is there a recommendation on mid ankle height vs high/above ankle boots ? Wondering which you had good luck with? Oh, btw, my daughter and I make your shortbread now every year for the past two years! She talk about how making shortbread is one of her favorite holiday and christmas memories now. She’ll talk about for months. Just want to say thank you ! :) it’s delicious and has brought us a lot of great memories. :) thanks Shug! ~mike:)
Actually, I find the subject quite interesting. Why ?, beats me. My problem is arthritic knees. I'm a back sleeper, but with the bend, my knees hyper-extend, so after a blissful rest, the knees are completely numb. As far as owning so many hammocks, it's a strong indicator that you... like hammocks. Thanks for the details. Peace ✌
Fred, I use a SeaToSummit Aeros large. Even in my flat laying Ridge Runner I need a little under my knees. This pillow is compact, light and very easy to adjust the air in the dark of the night as needed.
I now own a Equip double hammock (not double layer) but I am a side sleeper, have not yet had the opportunity to hang. it's a 11 footer so I figure I would have no trouble laying on my side in it
I’m really trying to like sleeping in a hammock but it’s just not comfortable to me. The thing is that I’ve already bought a warbonnet super fly and added dutchware to it as well adding seam seal to it. I now feel like I have to hammock camp but I just don’t know what to do ;(
I use them depending on season and if I need a bug net or not. So I switch around a lot. Lately using my Warbonnet Eldorado a lot. Leaving tomorrow on a solo trip with it.

Great video on side sleeping ! Like the way you presented the various hammocks and how to sleep on either side. Must have taken you a long time to do this video. Just a quick question , you seem to sleep head right and feet left , are you left handed or just your main preference? Thanks all your efforts and unbiased opinions, greatly appreciated! By the way, beard looks good on you !
In my Warbonnet RidgeRunner to comfortably side sleep I inflate my Exped fully so that it's quite firm when laying on it then use a thick pillow. The pillow is the secret so your neck stays straight. The firmness of the mat will coincide with body shape and preferences. Everybody's different. That's just a few tips from a part time side sleeper. To me...the firm mat keeps my spine straight and keeps my back from hurting plus like The Shug showed it puts your knees above the side strap. I guess if a person has wide hips, they may want the mat more relaxed.
Gray video is always wow you have so many hammocks I am very new to hammock backpacking I was a former ground sleeper but now I love being in the trees I am trying to save up and get the chameleon hammock but just out of curiosity do you ever sell any of your hammocks or under quilts I am on a fixed income so money is very tight
There's something I'm still missing, and maybe it's the cut of my hammock, but I feel like I'm bending too much to side sleep in my hammock. It's one of those made from 3 pieces of fabric, I wonder if that is a factor?
Shug, I cant tell if it's just tricksy camera angles or not, but it looks like you've got the foot end of your hammocks strung up quite a bit higher than the head end. Is there a reason for that and should I give it a try?
This video was so, so helpful! I appreciate the thoroughness, and didn't expect so many hammocks to be covered; that was great. To those hammock owners whom are side/back sleepers, (or really any style) how much does a specific hammock's design affect lower back/side/hip strain? Or maybe the tension on how it's rigged up? I'm inexperienced and curious about the give of hammocks, or the ability to manipulate it. Thank you in advance, I know to not rely on you guys solely for an answer, but thought it wouldn't hurt to ask
Shug, Great video. I posted, just recently, on another one of your videos in regards to hammock camping. I am new to it and am looking forward to future outings in my hammock and this style of camping. The question I posted to you was about throwing up a hammock on a hill or an incline or decline of the ground. I am still thinking this one through with trial and error. Like where does one put their feet or head if the ground is declining parallel with the hammock? How much higher does one have to attach their hammock lines up a tree? I do not have available to me the level ground necessary for most tutorials or "to do's" for hammock camping, as the suggestions go. I thought, "Whooooo Buddy, geez, this might be something Shug could make a video on if he hadn't already, why not ask him." So, I am asking. Thanks Shug, I think your videos are outstanding. @@darkdefender1 🥳 awesome!!!!!! so happy to hear you’re ok & well. Are you still getting out there camping now that you’re ok?
What is up with that?"
George replies, "Well, I am a very superstitious kind of guy. Every Saturday when I wake up, I look over at my wife. If she is sleeping on her left side, I golf left handed. If she is sleeping on her right side, I golf right handed."
"Well," one of the employees questioned, "What happens if she is laying on her back or font?"
George replies, "Then I am 10 minutes late!"
That was a good one. You must be a fast typer haaaa
@@shugemery Hehe, more like a half-fast typer (please don't say that too fast!) But I gotta profess, after a week struggling with different setups, pads, pillows, etc, I finally found that my secret is being a side sleeper - AMEN BRO, I owe you a huge debt of gratitude on my breakthrough and the sleep app on my watch would give you two thumbs WAY UP - So I give you One thumbs up on your 1.8K Likes for this video and One on your Reply here LOL.
I have an Amok coming in spring and cannot wait to use it. Thanks for all you do for us Shug!

I'm a sprinter. Go hard. Then lay down.
Good ideas. Whooooo Buddy))))
good to see the shoulder is back in action shug thumb up
Getting better and better.

Whooooo Buddy)))))
Thanks Shug! This helped a lot.
Y'elcome.
Whoooooo Buddy)))))
Enjoyed your video!
Thankee Cindy.
Been sleeping in a hammock for a month . I tossed my 20 year old bed so I could remodel my bedroom and decided to just spend a few months in my hammock. I actually sleep better, stay up and moving during the day and fall asleep faster at night.
Whooooo Buddy)))))
I side sleep in my hammy probably 90% of the night. I have found that if I have a really bad lay in my hammock due to having to settle for a not so great hang place, that I can get a wonderful flat lay just by side sleeping and curling up a bit. I am short, so I can do the fetal position thing. I do often back sleep in my hammock, which I never do in a bed or on the ground. I have a DIY bridge hammock that works great for side sleeping too. Nothing wrong with "testing" out hammocks for their sleepability.
Good intel there. Thanks.
Thanks

When a hammocks is for example 11 feet long and 60 inches wide, from where to where or what part of the hammock are these measurements taken from?
From the end to end of the hammock and side to side edges. Some measure the raw material.

Thanks!!
I think you will be OK with it. If not just exchange it.

Hi Shug,
im a Hammock camper from germany and i love your videos and appreciate your great experience.
I hope this is not too long :D
Greetings and thank you!

Actually, I find the subject quite interesting. Why ?, beats me. My problem is arthritic knees. I'm a back sleeper, but with the bend, my knees hyper-extend, so after a blissful rest, the knees are completely numb. As far as owning so many hammocks, it's a strong indicator that you... like hammocks. Thanks for the details. Peace ✌
Try a pillow or stuff sack under your knees. It'll do ya' right.

I am left handed so maybe that is why. Thankee and Whooooo Buddy))))
Good to know. Whooooo Buddy))))

There's something I'm still missing, and maybe it's the cut of my hammock, but I feel like I'm bending too much to side sleep in my hammock. It's one of those made from 3 pieces of fabric, I wonder if that is a factor?
Could be. Might be too wide. Try laying in a different hammock sometime.
@@shugemery I'll have to try a different one for sure... Mine is 3 pieces of fabric, 126" long, and 78" wide
Shug, I cant tell if it's just tricksy camera angles or not, but it looks like you've got the foot end of your hammocks strung up quite a bit higher than the head end. Is there a reason for that and should I give it a try?
You are correct. Keeps me from sliding towards the foot end and puts me in my sweet spot. Foot end 12 to 16 inches higher is pretty common.
I may try that! Im pretty satisfied with the way I already hang, but no harm in trying something different!
1.6 Hexon is the most comfortable fabric I have used. Like G McD, I'm a sort of side sleeper in a hammock.
I agree.
It is more about the hammock fabric.
Double layer hammock is firmer than a single layer.
Carry forth~~~~
Shug,
Great video. In another one of your videos, I heard about Dr. Bob and Bill. I am a friend of Dr. Bob and Bill for almost 6 years. Take care Shug, Whoooo Buddy.
