It was pretty cute tbh haha that innocent pre puberty voice. I got videos of me at that age that I look back at from time to time and giggle over how innocent I sounded. Not so innocent anymore lol
I had a similar situation. My mom always wanted one, then we got one 6 years ago and my parents took the word of one shop that they asked about care. I was too young at the time to understand
My ball python, Lucina, is my video gaming companion. She loves when I wear a hoody because she smuggles her body into my hood and brings her head out to my shoulder and loves chin rubs and occasionally lets me boop the snoot. Thankfully I didn’t ever step into herping blind because the very first night I took her home I binge watched YOU! We learn from other people’s mistakes, so thank you for being public and sharing your stories and experience!
This is something a lot of people in the pet community are doing, and I think it’s great people are acknowledging their mistakes from the past in order to educate others. Everyone’s pet keeping is a journey, and the learning never ends.
I like how you list and showed your mistakes. People will make some mistakes when owning a pet/reptile. I just got my leopard gecko and your care video has really helped me. My gecko went through a perfect shed last night as well :) Thank you so much.
If your reptile ever gets adhesive like tape stuck on them, gently rub coconut oil, cooking oil, or really any oil on them, and carefully peel it off while massaging the oil in. I once had to fix a crappy sliding screen that my cats had broken from sitting on the top. I used tape. One night, the bottom peice of tape kinda just hung down, and I heard rustling. I quickly jumped out of bed to find my baby corn snake stretched out the entire length of the tape struggling to get free. My parents and I cut off the tape, and took it out to the kitchen, at 3am. We soaked him for a while, and my dad got the idea to use coconut oil. He rubbed it all over my snake, and eventually was able to get it all unstuck. My snake ended up being just fine, I got a new and stronger top once I had some money. I've seen many stories where te same thing happened, something broke a screen top, they fixed it with tape, and the snake got stuck, but many actually lost scales and skin. If this happens, definitely reach for the oil.
Daisy Waisy I was crying and shaking for a long while, but once I knew the oil was getting him off and that he would be okay, I calmed down a bit. It was a very nerve-wracking experience
I had a similar experience... my first day of having my ball python. There had been a pretty significant crack in the corner, near the top. I had taped it, and then used a hot glue gun to "seal" the edges. I had the tank set up for about a week before I got her, and apparently, the small day light I used (just for looks) was putting off enough heat to soften the glue and weaken the adhesive. Morning after I got her was spent crying in a bathtub, frantically rubbing her down with vegetable oil. It's a slow process, but it got duct tap off of her and she only lost like two scales... oil is the way to go if something like that happens. She's all good and happy 4 years later so I don't think I scarred her for life haha
Sierra Shumate yeah it does take patience, but oil does work well. I've heard stories from people where it actually ripped off entire sections and chunks of scales. My snake managed to not damage any scales at all, but he had some messed up sheds for a couple months. Pretty traumatic stuff, no matter if the snake is fine or not
Today my ball python stayed in my hoodie pocket with his tale and head poked out. He's almost 4 feet which is concerning because he was about 1 foot not even when I got him just hatched and he just started to eat regularly for long enough. It's been 10 months, they said he was big for his age. I'm fine with that though, he's so good with kids and let's me pet his head and is so happy and healthy. One day he will grow big enough that I can ride on his back and we will take over the planet one Canadian province at a time, that is if he will go in the grass for once in his life and not wrap around my finger with his tale and just sit there. He's a great dude 10/10 best in the west 10/10 survived so far named Madesi thanks for reading.
G O D you were so little!!! ANYWAYS I think it's so important for well-known names in the reptile community to share stories like this. Everyone starts somewhere, and we're all always learning.
I got my Cucumber, my ball python, she wasn’t being taken care of properly and I chose her because she had mites and I knew how to get rid of them. She is my sneaky snek and is free of mites.
Your name and personality really don't add up but am so glad you aren't heartless at all. Cucumber is such a cute name. Hope she's just as healthy now too💕
The thing I love about this channel is that you use your own mistakes to help other people, I’ve been a bit paranoid and anxious about getting a ball python but I’ve done a lot of research and you’ve helped me lots and I think I’ll be fine🥰
I think it's bold of you to keep up your old videos. They show that you have no problem with learning and showing people that learning is all part of the process of owning animals. I know tons of carers who hide their mistakes and want to appear all-knowing and infallible. We all learn from one another. Your attitude is refreshing.
I got my ball python max about 4 months ago. He had mites as well and with your treatment, he's mite free and back into his normal home. (After almost 2 months of a sterile tank) I just need to get the funds to get him into a 20 gallon. He's also already on adult mice and is eating them quickly and easily.
Honestly I just bought a big 40 gal plastic container for like $12 at target. Plastic holds humidity better anyways... I did some mods, cut some holes and have a humidity regulator (basically a mesh I cover more or less depending on if I need to up or down the humidity). If you're worried about the snake needing more space, i'd say go for something like that. Maybe it's not the best looking but it definitely does the job!
Just got my first snake, and my first Ball Python and immediately jumped into super research mode to make sure i'm doing the best I can for my new Dobby (yes Dobby, he came in a bag that looked like a sock, therefore he got his sock and is now a free snake. {hubby has a sense of humor}) I went through sites and sites and stuff and breeders and etc etc, and after all that, I have found you to be the most informative through trial and error and education and research for a PET python. you are doing a great job and I really REALLY appreciate your input. and people may agree or disagree with some of your advice and research, but you do a great job in covering pros and cons, which things you prefer vs what others prefer etc. I think out of everything I've seen and read I've leaned toward your advice on most everything thus far. You're an awesome kid! (funny enough I feel you're more mature and educated than a lot of these "professional breeders" I've watched.. which is awesome for you, and really kinda sad for the 40 some year old breeder dude. Thanks for your help and advice!
I have mad respect for you for admitting that you didn't have the greatest start with snakes, I think it helps so many people who are beginners and who are making those same mistakes to also admit that and work to fix it.
I got my first snake yesterday. She is a BP that looks just like yours. She's in a 40 gallon tank with plenty of hides and toys and a big bowl of water to soak in. I'll have to buy her a thermostat, I didn't know it was needed! I only have the sticky thermometer thingy. She's going to be moved into a 75 gallon tank in a couple of months too. Edit: I now have a thermostat in her 75 gallon tank. She uses up every inch of it, and always asks to be taken out into bigger spaces lol. But I think a 75 gallon will be the last upgrade, I think it's probably big enough for the rest of her life, unless she grows to be 6 feet
Phoe's Stuff 75 gallon is too big. Your Ball python might get realy stressed. Edit: it's just what I've read. If you think that I'm wrong, feel free to tell me.
Midnight Mint She is a female. Females can grow to be 6 feet long. A snake should be able to stretch completely when in a tank without needing to wrap around the tank. Her tank may have to be 5-6 feet long. Her current tank is 3 feet long, which she is quickly outgrowing, so a 75 gallon will work since it's 4 feet long. I'm going to add lots and lots of hides and rocks and stuff so she doesn't get stressed
@@EvilSewnit thank you, she is! She's showing no signs of stress, her shed is perfect, and she's not shy at all! She's gotten pretty big, so I do think her enclosure size is necessary
Thank you for sharing your story because this is so common for beginners to make mistakes with ball python husbandry especially when there is so much misinformation and conflicting opinions out there. Nobody is perfect with their pets all the time and I think it's so important to share that story with people because you have to start somewhere. You are going to make mistakes and that's okay as long as you care for the animal and continue to educate yourself and do better.
The moral to your story is a good one.... You never stop learning and you should be constantly updating your research over the years and be open to learning new things. I've talked to people who believe what they believe no matter how well you prove them wrong. The latest was someone on Facebook who emphatically believes that you don't need a thermostat and that it's just a ploy for you to spend more money. I couldn't convince them otherwise. Love your vids and what Emerald Scales is doing.
We’ve all made mistakes when it comes to animal care. I literally put a toad in a show box with newspaper in it. I didn’t realize till it was too late that my American Bullfrog needed vitamins and calcium and healthy feeders, and sadly she has MBD. But I’ve changed the care and I guess I just have to move forward and do my best from now on...
My Zilla kit came with bedding, heat lamp, heat pad, two little homes (I call them homes dont bully me .,.), a water bowl, and a like log for him to get on, a thermostat (same one you got), and a I bought another thermostat and humidity measure. I spent 8 months or more learning about Ball Pythons and I am 12 years old about to be 13 and Pluto is perfectly fine, (dont know gender yet he/she is still a baby, I've had it since December 27th and eats perfectly, every Sunday.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR PUTTING THIS OUT THERE!!! I went though almost the same exact thing when I first got my ball python. It's hard and I was young and only knew to do what my mom told me to do. It's really discouraging to see most reptile youtubers always saying that you shouldn't get reptiles and going on long winded rants about what horrible pet owners do and it made me feel so awful. I will always have a lot of guilt and shame for not knowing any better before. But now I can say I learned a lot and will always have peak care for my reptiles in the future. Nobody's perfect. I'm so glad that you can admit your faults and be real with your audience unlike a lot of other reptile youtubers/owners who act like they're perfect and they made no mistakes while owning reptiles and shame people for making mistakes. Thanks for being real :)
so awesome to see the growth of knowledge and the commitment to finding the best care for your pets. so glad you didn't just give up when you ran into problems
In the summer tho..... NC humidity got that 90-100% range (at least where I'm from originally now I'm in another part of the state and the summer humidity remains to be seen)
Lmao, when you said that you've finally decided that you wanted a cornsnake, I had to pause for a moment, and rewind it. I was like, did I miss something here?? 😂😂
4:37 I live in north carolina.... WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? Okay, yeah, in winter and fall and stuff, it's pretty dry, but goddamn have you ever been outside during spring/summer? The air is so wet and sticky, I feel like i'm swimming and it makes the heat so much worse >~< 4 years later edit: i was a strange child. Anyway yeah very humid and gross down here
lol you can look a the average recorded humidity in NC and see that its normal compared to other states, I live in Florida and if you think it feels like you're swimming in NC you wouldn't know what to do with yourself here lmao.
lol seeing that video of you as a little kid getting Sunny, it makes me think of what my son might be like one day. I hope he loves reptiles as much as you do. When it's your own kid, I imagine a parent who also loves reptiles would be so fugging proud
I really loved the way you did this vid....totally awesome!!! So my son Jesse, 29 years old, just got me a ball python for Mother's Day....so exciting!!! I am trying to do a bunch of research really fast, cause this wasn't expected or planned..lol. Named my Python Chewy Jr., after the boa I had when Jesse was a baby :) Not sure exactly what substrate I'm gonna get. Had Aspen on hand... Guess that isn't the best to buy for humidity. Really concerned about the humidity thing...that is what I am researching now....lol. Anyways....you are an awesome young man :)
Thank you for posting this. As a beginner I have made so many mistakes…and am still correcting them. I think that as long as you take your snakes seriously, and continue to educate and your heart is in it and you do not neglect…AND it also helps to have a good support system. I found a great small non chain reptile business that has been SO helpful. I also keep in touch with the breeder of my second ball ( I have 2) and he is also very helpful. I am going to start logs on both snakes and I thank you for that tip. Thanks for your channel I have learned SO much from you and I appreciate you. 😊
Wow, when I got Chief my normal male ball python from the sewer fest reptile expo I didn't know anything about caring for it, but I did some research and he is now thriving. Love ur channel, keep it up
Thank you so much for this video. I've come to find there are a lot of helpful folks in this community, but there are also a lot of know-it-alls who act like they've never messed up and are perfect. It's always nice to hear how someone else messed it up. I really appreciate the honesty.
Went back and watched some of your NC Nature News videos. Baby Alex is so pure 😂 and those white sandals were a great fashion choice 😁👍🏻 keep up the good work kid ❤️
Thanks for sharing your mistakes! I just got into reptiles this year (I always loved reptiles, I just thought that they would be way too hard for me to care for for some reason). Watching your videos helped me a lot and thankfully I’ve been able to avoid a lot of rookie mistakes
Yea same with my BP some article I read said it didnt needs heat lights or mats. So I didnt use hers often. I mostly used them for my baby chickens at the time. I watched Snake Discovery And GoHerping alot then realized my mistakes. .^.
heck yeah for the honesty. ive had my python since nov. 2013... she was about 2 months old..... I have learned that listening to people from the start that seemed to know about them was a mistake as well. so for sure doing your own research and just talking to many others help! your vids are helpful, thanks!
Thank you for sharing. It's good to show that not everyone starts out as an expert and there's a lot you learn by doing. I'm glad things worked out and it's cool to see how far you've come! Inspiring. :)
Hey merci pour l'information :) I just bought one - after a lengthy decision process and I'm trying everything to make sure he is okay and just a happy little fellow.
No way! Growing up i always wanted a corn snake. they are native to the area i live but i never see them much. I went to an expo with my family a couple years back dead set on getting one but as fate would have it we fell in love with this energetic ball python while looking around. The guys who raised and sold him to us were very helpful and friendly, and that day i left with a beautiful* healthy ball python. *Super Pastel, Lesser, het4 Orange ghost.
My first snake was A banana ball we got from petsmart. . never again. We had her only a few months before she passed away july 2018. She was sick and we had to force feed her medicine, my dad called an exotic vet who helped us but we couldn't save her. Now i have a mojave ball who's growing steadily and very healthy
when i first got my first snake, i went to get a corn snake like you and i came back home with a spotted python! i’m actually happy i did because I think he’s the perfect snake for me. I got home and did research about spotted pythons. i love him so much! :)
You are my favorite reptile guy! Your humor is just great overall, but your videos have been so inspiring & helpful. You definitely made me want to get a boa & so I DID :) she's amazing & your tips really help, so THANK YOU!
You’re fantastic. It’s obvious how much you care about your animals, and it takes a big person to admit when they messed up. The fact is, we all start out as beginners. The fact that you’re always learning and doing better says a lot about you as a person. Good job. Also, I laughed out loud at the arresting and crypto comments. 😄

I spent 8 months or more learning about Ball Pythons and I am 12 years old about to be 13 and Pluto is perfectly fine, (dont know gender yet he/she is still a baby, I've had it since December 27th and eats perfectly, every Sunday.
Awwwww lil you lovin your reptiles is adorable
I love that you made this!! Sunny lived and you learned!!
You’ve come a very long way. I love your channel and all that you do. Thanks for being here and posting these for us!
thank you!
Aww lil Alex with baby Sunny :3
so awesome to see the growth of knowledge and the commitment to finding the best care for your pets. so glad you didn't just give up when you ran into problems
Your editing is so fun, Sunny's story is great. I'm hoping for my first ball python in 2019. Congratulations on 100k and Emerald Scales.
I seriously appreciate your acknowledgement of your mistakes so others can learn from them
AHhh NC Nature News....the good ole' days LOL
In the summer tho..... NC humidity got that 90-100% range (at least where I'm from originally now I'm in another part of the state and the summer humidity remains to be seen)
My banana ball python arrived today!!🤗🐍🤘🏽🤙🏽
Insane Sharks congratulations!!! What's his/her name?

1:41 this was the cutest thing I've seen today.
Look at sunny.
Lmao, when you said that you've finally decided that you wanted a cornsnake, I had to pause for a moment, and rewind it. I was like, did I miss something here?? 😂😂
I’m glad to hear that even people who are really good with there animals had some struggles at first makes me feel better about myself

I live in north carolina.... WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? Okay, yeah, in winter and fall and stuff, it's pretty dry, but goddamn have you ever been outside during spring/summer? The air is so wet and sticky, I feel like i'm swimming and it makes the heat so much worse >~<
4 years later edit: i was a strange child. Anyway yeah very humid and gross down here
Peeble Kitty why do I see your comments like FREAKING EVERYWHERE
I think he means compared to other areas. I live in East Texas and the humidity can get pretty high.
I live in north Carolina aswell and thats soooo true!
Lol come to Florida scrublord
lol you can look a the average recorded humidity in NC and see that its normal compared to other states, I live in Florida and if you think it feels like you're swimming in NC you wouldn't know what to do with yourself here lmao.
lol seeing that video of you as a little kid getting Sunny, it makes me think of what my son might be like one day.
Named my Python Chewy Jr., after the boa I had when Jesse was a baby :)
Not sure exactly what substrate I'm gonna get. Had Aspen on hand... Guess that isn't the best to buy for humidity.
Really concerned about the humidity thing...that is what I am researching now....lol.
Anyways....you are an awesome young man :)
This is an awseome video. You learn so much more from mistakes than advice. Im glad you shared that my friend
Funny thing is, your old care video was recommended to me a week or so ago xD
Thank you for posting this. As a beginner I have made so many mistakes…and am still correcting them. I think that as long as you take your snakes seriously, and continue to educate and your heart is in it and you do not neglect…AND it also helps to have a good support system. I found a great small non chain reptile business that has been SO helpful. I also keep in touch with the breeder of my second ball ( I have 2) and he is also very helpful.
I am going to start logs on both snakes and I thank you for that tip. Thanks for your channel I have learned SO much from you and I appreciate you. 😊
I live in NC too, and the humidity is insane late summer!
Nice to hear about your mistakes and experiences. I think it’s part of any reptile keeping but willingness to improve is the most important.
Wow, when I got Chief my normal male ball python from the sewer fest reptile expo I didn't know anything about caring for it, but I did some research and he is now thriving. Love ur channel, keep it up
Reptiles Unlimited sewer fest? I love that expo!
Thank you so much for this video. I've come to find there are a lot of helpful folks in this community, but there are also a lot of know-it-alls who act like they've never messed up and are perfect. It's always nice to hear how someone else messed it up. I really appreciate the honesty.
Thats one cuddly snek boi
I applaud you good sir! It is a brave thing to share your mistakes and a good way to inform :)
"We didn't go to Petco to get it."
Me:*laughs nervously*
You are so well spoken & such a cutie!! Nice to see the next gen herpers coming up!!!!
Do more snake terrarium builds please they give me great ideas for my Ball Python
Went back and watched some of your NC Nature News videos. Baby Alex is so pure 😂 and those white sandals were a great fashion choice 😁👍🏻 keep up the good work kid ❤️
Are you wearing the same shirt as kid you in that video?
Werewolf Of Hircine those are two different shades of green. How would he fit in what he wore years ago anyway?!
DONT QUESTION ME!!!!
Sun... damage??
Karm Films he joking btw
@@karmfilms8132 I still wear the same shoes from 10 years ago
Aww.. Look at lil baby Alex! So cute.
Lol “humidity spray” ... you mean water 😂
Thanks for sharing your mistakes! I just got into reptiles this year (I always loved reptiles, I just thought that they would be way too hard for me to care for for some reason). Watching your videos helped me a lot and thankfully I’ve been able to avoid a lot of rookie mistakes
I made a whole bunch of mistakes when I had my bearded dragons, it’s a live and learn kind of thing.
Yea same with my BP some article I read said it didnt needs heat lights or mats. So I didnt use hers often. I mostly used them for my baby chickens at the time. I watched Snake Discovery And GoHerping alot then realized my mistakes. .^.
“We’re getting to know each other better” is by far the cutest baby Alex phrase ever you’ve always been so sweet with animals 😭
You deserve more than 2 Million subs
You mean 2 Thousand ??
heck yeah for the honesty. ive had my python since nov. 2013... she was about 2 months old..... I have learned that listening to people from the start that seemed to know about them was a mistake as well. so for sure doing your own research and just talking to many others help! your vids are helpful, thanks!
GoHerping spills his own luke warm tea ☕️🐍
Thank you for sharing. It takes a lot of strength to advertise your mistakes! I am glad Sunny is doing well!
Thank you for sharing. It's good to show that not everyone starts out as an expert and there's a lot you learn by doing. I'm glad things worked out and it's cool to see how far you've come! Inspiring. :)
Gosh you have so much knowledge especially for being so young it's amazing !!keep up the great work
You now have 50k subs do a Minecraft lets play
m a y b e
Go Herping- have your ball python play some minecraft
*looks towards Minecraft snake mod*
omg that baby UA-camr
so cute and sweet
kids can be so pure and enthusiastic about their pets
I totally empathize. I’ve done a lot of ignorant things when I was younger to my pets. Thank you for sharing
Hey merci pour l'information :) I just bought one - after a lengthy decision process and I'm trying everything to make sure he is okay and just a happy little fellow.
Nice sick and congested voice 😂👌👌 btw love you dude. Keep up the good work :D
Lmaoo I didn’t know there was a difference between a thermostat or thermometer until I saw this 💀
We all have to grow and learn. I think it’s cool you are coming forward like this and admitting you made mistakes
Alex looks way younger in the thumbna- oh wait, he is.
So sunny has been your snake for 5years? :) awww
when i first got my first snake, i went to get a corn snake like you and i came back home with a spotted python! i’m actually happy i did because I think he’s the perfect snake for me. I got home and did research about spotted pythons. i love him so much! :)
Yay new video! Love your content ❤️
Awww! Great video Alex! Sunny's lucky to have you. You're such a kind person. ☺️♥️🐍
Ball pythons are some of the most fun and coolest reptiles to keep!
You are my favorite reptile guy! Your humor is just great overall, but your videos have been so inspiring & helpful. You definitely made me want to get a boa & so I DID :) she's amazing & your tips really help, so THANK YOU!
He was arresting you for your past crimes ;)
You’re fantastic. It’s obvious how much you care about your animals, and it takes a big person to admit when they messed up. The fact is, we all start out as beginners. The fact that you’re always learning and doing better says a lot about you as a person. Good job. Also, I laughed out loud at the arresting and crypto comments. 😄
You seem like a vey smart young buissnesmen
Thank you for all the education I am getting about reptiles.
