Hi my name is Emi. My van life story starts in September 2018. After a long-term relationship that I was trying for more than a year to rebuild, I decided it was time to end this toxic relationship one for all. This is where I decided to move away from this man that I was still in love with. I put all my owning inside my SUV (GMC Jimmy) and moved six hours from where I was living. I didn’t know where I will sleep, didn’t know where I will work but I knew I needed to make a drastic move. At that time, I told myself I will only sleep in my car for a month while looking for a place to rent. What I didn’t know is that one month became another month and another month. In the end, I end up sleeping in my car for a full year. Even if people will consider this the lowers time of my life, this experience was the best thing I couldn’t have done with my life. I took that year to focus on myself, decide what I wanted, and most importantly what I didn’t want. That year made me also realize that for so long, I was chasing the wrong dreams. I was chasing what society wanted me to be: to have a big house, a steady job, kids, get married… None of those dreams was making me happy. In September 2019, while I was actively looking for a van, I received a phone call that someone had found my cat (Kelly). After, trying for hours with no success to communicate with my ex-boyfriend (who was taking care of her), I decided to drive the six hours to go pick her up. Without going into too much detail, it turns out he wasn’t able to take care of her anymore. So I brought her in a cat kennel for a couple of days until I found a van we both could live in. I put all the saving that I had accumulated while living in my car and bought my van (a 2011 Ford Econoline that I end up adding a hightop) In the beginning, It wasn’t so glamour. My cat and I were sleeping on a mattress on the floor of the van. We both had to adjust. Now, my cat loves this lifestyle as much as I do; she looks at the window while I’m driving and she loves exploring new places. Since then, my cat Kelly and I are living full-time in my self convert van.

I have been using butane stoves for 20yrs and I wouldn't trade it for anything, nope🙅🏾♀️
And when I buy my cans I Always place a strip of duct-tape over the cap for safety.💁🏾♀️
Lastly;
When winter returns and it's near or below zero here's a hack...
Before you go to bed put a can close enough to reach so when you wake up, place the can under the blanket with you, it worms up fast.

I replaced my butane stove with a GasOne butane/propane hybrid stove a couple years ago. It's physically the same size as my old butane stove, but it gives you a backup fuel source in case you can't find butane or it's too cold for the butane to burn well. I love it.

I bought two gas one stoves from Costco and paid $17.49 each. I bought 8 packages of butane as they come 4 to a package at $12.99 each. I’ll never stop stocking up on this.
Those ignition switches ALWAYS break, whether it's a big gas barbecue grill or a little stove like yours. I think you are a genius, because I wouldn't want propane in my van either. Do wish they would recycle those canisters. Someday they will say hopefully say "you make them, you need to recycle them"... about everything! Happy trails lady and cat. 🤓✌️👏
Hi, FYI, Asian markets all have these butane stoves as well as the canisters for much cheaper than Walmart. Check Chinese and Korean markets.
I agree. I bought my stove at a small Asian market here in LA for $15. I get butane canisters in packs of three for $3.99. It’s a cheap, easy way to cook/heat water.

Asian food stores often sell the butane canisters for much less. It is also a good option for busy seasons where WM and CT might be out of stock. Campers don't think to go to the Asian stores for it. ;) I got my stove in a Asian store plus a bunch of 4 packs of the butane. (I went to T&T Market. Google says there is one in Squamish.) Another 2 bonuses to these stoves... igniter is included so you don't have to buy lighters... and they are so light weight compared to a complete propane stove with the tank.
My stove is butane but has an attachment for propane if I can't find butane. I also have a two burner propane stove with wind guard. I've been buying butane by the case from Amazon. Sporting Goods stores have it as well as TA truck stops. Before I retired from trucking I cooked with butane in the truck. I also have a domedic refrigerator freezer.
Emi, when it gets cold in the winter start your van and put the butane can over the defrost vent on the dashboard. I had do that with spray paint in my work truck every winter ! ✌️💜🎸

I love my butane stove. I got mine at a local Korean grocery store for about $12, and a 5 pack of butane canisters for about the same price !

check out the asian grocery stores next time your in town (Vancouver/Victoria for sure) they sell butane cans very cheap compared to CanadianTire or Walmart here

I like my Camp Chef butane 1-burner 8,000 BTU stove I bought this past year that I use when my home power goes out. Butane canisters were hard to find during hurricane season and after a severe ice storm that destroyed our power lines . I did learn to always keep a spare canister around as there will be none to buy after a bad weather event with power outages. My backup luckily was an ancient, but always reliable, Coleman white gas stove but I certainly love the simplicity and cleanliness of my new butane stove.

You covered this very well. I bought a stove from London Drugs that runs on both. It comes with a propane hose to connect where the butane tanks hook up. It was $30 on sale, regular $40. I haven't used it on propane yet. I bought it because I have heard others complain there are areas in the U.S.A. that don't sell the tanks and also areas that were completely out. So now I have the option to choose.
I bought the Coleman butane, single burner$19.00 at Walmart
Edmonton. We went camping in my Kitty Kamper for a week. Just got home. I made your lasagna. SO EASY. SO GOOD! The pot sure got empty fast! I added one layer of spinach because that’s what my Mom always did. We got a campsite right beside a lake and it was so beautiful and nice to get back out in nature. I prefer those butane cans as well. However, I carry the hoses for both the green cans and full size propane bottles. I like to be able to adapt with whatever I have on hand.
I like butane stoves better for camping, but there are times when being able to use propane is desirable. Below freezing, for example, or simply because it's available. For that reason, I recommend the "dual-fuel" stoves that are built to use either.
I recommend only buying butane canisters with the CRV safety caps, especially if you're using/storing large quantities of butane canisters constantly. Hazards are rare, but they do happen and if you're using them all the time it's more likely to happen.

I have a two burner propane stove in my tent trailer. One side is a stove and the other side a barbecue grill for steaks, pork chops and chicken. The problem that I found is that simmering is a challenge so even cooking eggs wasn’t always successful. With the van, I don’t have as much space so I bought a single burner butane stove like you have at Canadian Tire. It was money well spent. Last night I made a chicken curry. It was perfect.
So butane is a little more expensive than propane. For the few nights that I spend camping, it’s worth it.

Good info, Emi. I went with a one burner stove that uses both. My van is small and it gets cold here in Ontario. 10 days isn't bad at all. I was wondering how long a can would last. Thanks for that 👍❤️🔥
Butane canisters dont last as long as the little green propane cans but the cost ends up pretty even usually since the butane is cheaper. One butane can for me lasts around a week with regular cooking
I agree with you I would prefer this method. These are compact, easy to insert and I feel safe using them. I will also think of another way to have coffee or ask for hot water when it gets too cold. Unless they ever come up with something better.
Actually they are less safe, they just redesigned the cans to be "safer" If you have the blue ring on the top, that is the new "safer" can. Most of the issues with the small (green) propane tanks was because people were refiling them and theyre not designed for that. I have both and prefer the butane but I have no fear of either.
My stove looks like the same as yours and I can use propane or butane. That’s why I bought it, I wanted to be able to use whatever I had available.

BE CARFUL to see on the back of the can safety label says CRV ( countersink release vent) or a blue ring on the top of the can. This is very important because it's a safety label to prevent the can from overheated and explode.
Great tip! I buy the cans at 1,30 Euro per bottle (some Korean brand) . Am shocked at the price difference, but maybe it's because of the CRV. My Korean is non existent, so i doubt I'll be able to check.
I use butane too------- but butane does not burn as hot as propane so it takes longer to cook with butane. Butane freezes at about 32 degrees, propane is way lower than that. 1# propane bottles can be refilled butane can't. ( You'll need an adapter & a 20# propane tank to do it.)
The thing is, just like you, I like the ease of loading a butane canister into the stove. My propane stoves are gathering dust but the butane stove has been in my rig for years.

I am also frightened about propane, and how it liquefies below 0C, and then leaks out around the floor (if attached to Mr Buddy heater).
In my area, there can be electricity supply issues, so after watching your video, I have bought one of these plus four butane canisters for my sister and myself. She is a great cook, so if she whinges about the single burner, she can just buy another one.

I have both. If you're limited on storage, the butane would be the better option for set up and storage. Propane doesn't bother me. You can buy refillable small bottles from Flame King. As for leaking, I've had a butane cylinder leak out but not a propane cylinder.

Having a raised roof was a great idea. It gives you the option of installing a wet bathroom. That’s a shower and toilet , sink in one . Plus with a high top you out fit the van with a small dinette and table. If the bed is raised you can put a water tank under it and put the black and grey tank underneath. The can gas huge potential . I do suggest you lift it better yet have it turned into 4wd which is doable

I have all 3 types of stoves. Butane, propane, & white gas. In cold weather the white gas always starts. I know they're antiquated & a bit finicky to use, but I also get a lot more cooking time from a gallon of white gas than I do the equivalent amount of propane or butane.
Love the Coleman white gas stoves. You certainly use lots less, they work flawlessly in cold or high altitude.
I say spend the $10 to get the propane adapter as backup. Another advantage over propane (especially if you are cooking inside) is the fact they are less powerful, more controllable burners. Except for cooking pasta you don’t want a blowtorch stove. It’s way easier to simmer on the butane. In the van I keep a butane backpackers stove as a fast water boiler and a backup. When I worked in television and we did a daily cooking segment on our daily show I’d say that 50 to 75% of the professional chefs coming in brought one of these to cook on over our electric cooktop. Some day, if it ever leaks where the can connects to the stove, just replace the rubber O-ring. I saw that in a repair YT video somewhere.
I'm curious if the flint from the lighter will light the butane even if the lighter is out of fluid. Also, I know you will get a heater soon (Yay!), how about putting the butane can under your warm quilts in the morning for a bit?
Also, remember you heated up your water for your shower. That means you got even more use from a can.

I use a propane stove too. I find it even boils water faster than propane. So less gas use.

I use an induction stove with my Jackery solar generator, no butane or propane bottles to buy and throw away. I also have a 700 watt pressure cooker that I use for everything from rice to oatmeal to putting on sear mode so I can use a one pot for the entire meal. Recharging my jackery is easy, plugin while driving, portable solar panels or just plug in at a coffee shop. Just a thought you might like it, you never know when the next store shortage will come. Brian Clevenger you recharge your Jackery while driving. What wattage of Jackery do you have? You never have a problem with it draining your battery? How do you plug it in with your vehicle? Do you plug it in to your cigarrette lighter? Im not interested in Solar yet (lol). Just interested in how to recharge your Jackery using your vehicle without draining your battery. I charge my Jackery by plugging into the 12vdc (cigarette lighter outlet) while I'm driving, then when I park I use my solar panels that fold up and store under my bed. It never drains the car battery while driving. Hope this helps you when you do go solar. btw...Jackery puts their solar generators with or without the portable panels.
I have the same stove but, it has the adapter for the Propane. I too have not used it because of the safety and convenience as well and had an issue during the pandemic finding the butane canisters. I buy 2 at a time now so when I get to the second one I know it is time to start looking. I think I will get the Gas One (GS8300) next time because it is more compact. I bought a collapsible 12v kettle to heat water with so saves $ & time on butane stove.
Emi butane is pretty much safe. Propane to me is a bomb.

I was wondering this too, especially for those in warmer areas. I know mice can be a problem getting into engines as well.
Get a cat if you want insect and mice out Haha seriously I never had any insects problems. Maybe in states is a bigger problem than here
If you have a lot of flying insects really all you can do is move. Small number of flies or mosquitos you can get a little portable bug zapper. Biggest thing is have screens. Little no see um flies can get in almost anything though.
Mice or chipmunks, any kind of similar animal....I've seen people have LED lights under vehicles some flashing. Peppermint can deter them but you have to keep reapplying. I use peppermint oil inside my van and peppermint tea leaves on the ground outside but if you already have a rodent then you have to get a lot more aggressive. Peppermint also can help keep creepy crawlies out. Check your engine compartment regularly for signs of rodents. They can and will chew wiring.

Thanks for info, I have cooked on propane, over the last several years. Camping large motor home 4burner also had a trailer parked in a trailer park , it had4burnet large stove with oven. Also, only used 1 burner. Unless a big group get together. I have the Coleman butane , in my Apt. For Energy, I had Hydro problems. So love the little stove stores well in little case. Butane tanks are hard to find. Walmart carries info.
These are considered. Season gear. So they get rid of all stock till about June . That’s here in Ontario I usually buy a few to get through winter. Hopefully no need to use. So not sure. If B C does not carry all winter. Walmart here does not , Ontario 🇨🇦

The only Q. left is if the butane safe in a warm/hot environment? It has been 40C here the last four days, and even much hotter in the van. Doing raw food and smoothie meal options atm, with take away once in a while.
Butane just doesn't work well in cold temps...that's why I use propane
Amazon has a single burner that looks like yours, that is made by "Gas One". It burns Butane or Propane. It comes with a hose that has a regulator on it. If your afraid to use propane, you can get a carbon monoxide detector for $20.
Both fuels release carbon monoxide while burning, so ventilation is key regardless.
I use the exact stove, the igniter is called a Piezo, but it is replaceable. You said yours broke from day 1. With a small pair of needle nose pliers make sure igniter is not to far from the gas. If it is bend the tip towards burner. And then turn the only knob fully counter clockwise and it should have a tiny blue spark along with a click. Much easier to check the spark in the dark.

I think I would like option of both butane and propane, but I saw the reverse on our last long weekend in May, NO Green bottles, just propane on shelf of local store..... I will probably get just single burner like your, as I am a 1 pot / burner 'cook' at best.. I've been trying to decide what to purchase. My son doesn't want me to have any kind of flame in the van. He thinks I'm going to set myself on fire. I don't think he understands the cost of everything being electric. I did see an idea for cooking outside cheaply. Google rocket stoves. 2 tin cans and just a handful of twigs to boil water. I have just watched your video as I’m looking into these stoves also and I have ran across an adapter to refill these canisters. It would be using the butane canisters used for lighters which are more commonly found and also the round short canisters if you would like to look into that.

I drive semi and I use a 12 volt electric stove. It cooks while I drive in a totally enclosed lunch box style stove while the engine is running and charging. I'm looking for a fuel to cook on the rare occasion that I'm stopping for extended time. Not sure propane or butane
