PLEASE do a “layouts for singles” I feel like most videos like these focus on bench seats and extra beds for families and don’t go into pros and cons of specific fixtures like permanent wet bath vs convertible or permanent bed vs convertible, or even kitchen sizes and pros and cons of different appliances/hookups.

It’s all personal preference. I had a convertible bed that had to be pushed in for sitting, cooking, etc. and it drove me nuts having push-pull it in and out every time I wanted to lounge with feet up, nap, etc.
A good rule of thumb is do you spend most of your time during the day at home sitting upright or doing things or in a lounging position.
Even working (online) I almost always have my feet up and definitely when watching videos, movies, etc. so a fixed bed was best for me.

I know it's probably an impossible question but what's an average cost for these vans plus a build? Do banks give out loans? What's the insurance type and costs? I'd love a video or series that lets into the money aspects of getting into van life.

  • @gethappycyclingcampingoutdoors

Great video. Tip no. 3 is the most important, I'm converting a van that I will use for over night stays or a few nights away for mounting biking. The most important thing for me is a bed, I do all my cooking outside, washing, well I use a campsite shower or do without washing for a day or two no big deal, brush your teeth and use a bottle of water to rinse your mouth.
I have an awning to sit under, cook under, a small BBQ to cook with and a gas stove.
It is camping after all not luxury living! ✌❤

Best and most different layout Ive seen was a recent van tour where the bed came down from the roof on tracks at the front of the van over the living area which gave basically two queen size sleeping areas and giving a "full size" bathroom and kitchen layout. Plus the concrete type wall material was fabulous on the walls. Completely different look and feel of these typical layouts and styles shown here (nothing wrong with these mind you).

Family of 5 with a 120# Newfoundland in PNW here. Some feedback from our 10 years of vans, we DIY the build. 1. Get flares, sleep sideways. 2. use stock 3 seat bench against the bed. 3 Put the kitchen in the van step. Yup...9" deep, take half the step and extend the cabinet inside another 20" back. Kitchen opens to the outside with drop down counter and extension. Why? Cooking inside is a mess and totally not needed unless lots of winter camping. 4. A 15gal water tank behind the bench seat, horizontally, 6 gal gray water tank next to it (passenger side) all in the garage. Plumbed to a pop up sink on the inside side of kitchen. Foot pump to RV click in faucet. No electricity, easy to fix. No hot water, heat some up. 5.Batteries underneath means you get ALL the garage width. Why? Nobody shows all the inflatable kayak/SUP, fishing gear, surfing gear, wetsuits, coats/blankets, firewood, dutch oven, s'more sticks, hatchet, grill, bike tools...you know...camping stuff. 6. One easy to setup tent/sleeping pads/pillows/sleeping bags because nobody wants to sleep with their parents all the time 7.Top load National Luna Twin fridge freezer behind driver with Lagun tables that swivel both sides to allow surface as prep space or as a table for the bench seats. Mom preps by fridge and pantry (see #8) Dad cooks outside. 8. Headliner shelf, the LOW one is your pantry. 8. SOFT cabinets. Reduce weight and injury in case of accident. Build with nothing that can splinter. Secure ALL hard objects if not in the garage. 9. Soft zippered bulkhead, the front window shades are a pain, don't insulate as much and give away someone is inside. 10. Cassette toilet only for urine. Store in garage. 11. Solar shower or heat some water. Use a teak mat out back with a cheap battery driven shower head. Plumbing inside a van can be a mess, a "bathroom" takes up valuable space most rarely if ever use. 12. Drop down movie screen from headliner shelf, small projector in ceiling.

Love this design, thing is…i could use the dining area as the work and play space with the flat screen tv there where the bed dining table conversion is. Then have bathroom extended where the work space is and with a small closet space with shelving and stuff to hang clothes wrapping all around in front blocking driving area with a large hanging closet and shelving there also, or maybe a sitting area in front of entrance where the window is still there with storage below and has a pull out feature to extend into a another bed that way also. That so work for me. All the fixtures and design elements are nice for me. I am definitely saving this video for a great idea to live in for the rest of my days while in America. This be amazing and love it. 😊

I need a small office space in the back to work, write, a house a small flight simulator. I think a lift bed could go above or a simple bunk bed stashed against a wall. A small kitchen w no cooktop but maybe one externally will work. Separate toilet/shower is desirable. But the work space and my flight sim are my big priority. Everything else is a trade off. I have been watching many videos and thinking about the various layouts. Don’t know if I’m up for a build as I’m 61, but the family of 3 layout looks intriguing. Anyway, I don’t really understand the whole wheel base factor? Googling For Transit WB’s it said they come in 130 or 148. But you said most people opt for 170? I assume 148 vs 130 just means that the 148 is 18” longer than the 130? Also, if a 148 WB is used then you would have to eliminate the fixed shower and maybe install a shower pan in the floor and have a removable shower curtain? Finally, how much height would a rack with solar panels & AC add to the van? I would like to store medium roof (101”) van in a 9’ (108”) garage door if possible? Thanks.

Family of 3 layout is my fave.... only if because it truly does allow for keeping multiple zones without "re-configuring" zones as needed. I wonder if you'd have any tips for me ...I have a GMC Savana 1500 that i in pretty much mint condition original built inside. I will use it mainly for weekend getaways and don't need a bath etc. In fact for now I'm apprehensive about destroying the original pristine wood paneling, or carpet, but would love to brighten up the space a little... I've taken out the 2 extra passenger seats, and will lay a rubberized white floor floor on top of the carpet but still want to brighten the walls, and change the front passenger seat to a swivel and install a "lagoon" type table for that chair so my bed can stay in bed mode and I can have a sitting, eating, area in front. For a kitchen I'm thinking of a kitchen box so I can take it outside when it's nice out but bring inside if raining etc. Any suggestions on what to consider when DYI or where to buy materials. I'm also looking at installing an awning in the front. Thanks in advance for your time, and keep up the great work.

Do you have any videos helping us to decide what power level van is acceptable or not? You mentioned in the video we need a “3500” …. Is it possible to get a “1500” or a “2500” ? I am not aware of weight restrictions.

Bed should not be fixed, you only need it for one third of the day, find Murphy ways to use it. You don't need to sit four five six people, you need a work space, a place to eat and a place to chill for you. Unless you have kids, you don't need a second bed, let them sleep in a tent or the passenger seat. invest heavy in kitchen and bathroom, take your time on plumbing and electrical

Errh why not have a fixed bed!! What's it gotta do with you!! I definitely would have a fixed bed because it can be used as a seating area too!! What a horrible person you are!! Little miss bossy GO MAKE YOUR OWN CRAPPY VAN AND DON'T WATCH THESE CHANNELS THEN! Grow up!! 😃😃👋🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️😆

You took my idea to another level I was thinking Murphy kitchen/sink.....for a dance floor!!! But your Murphy bed idea is great if they can store the electronics somewhere else (many under with metal cover?
I saw someone fabricate a under carriage 150 gal water tank!! With a 'dam" system so it won't slosh much

For me, a Murphy bed takes away an entire wall of storage. I’d rather have a drop down bed over a lounge area, that can also convert to a bed. And still fit some lockers to the underside of the drop-down bed. But this is the great thing about van layouts, everyone has different needs and you just need to find what suits you best.

How do you cover the front window or close the mosquito net on side window when airing out in these campervans?

Having grown up upper middleclass. And Vanlifed for almost 14 years. And was a guy who showered twice a day. I find that showering everyday is ridiculous (no kids here 😊). Especially when I have severely dry skin. Even during winter you can hook up a waterproof heated electric shower footpad. Put it behind your two back van doors on the ground and plug it into van house power in the garage. Hang a foldable hulahoop shower curtain between open or closed back doors. Pull an insulating waterproof tarp down over the open doors. And shower outside comfortably once the floor pad and tankless water is heated up after 10 minutes. And save 10 square feet of stupid indoor wetbath wasted shower space. From inexperienced people used to standard housing life. No offense. In that the advantages to have a vehicle to do Urban Vanlife, too. Mostly to be able to fit your van in a Standard Size Parking spot and fit under low ceiling parking garages is highly desirable in tough parking environments.🎉

I'm at the very beginning of all this (other than watching van videos), I don't have a van yet. I would love to see a van that can haul a sit-on-top kayak inside, wet bath, kitchen can be small, work on laptop, and two dogs....one large and one medium (no kennels needed). Just need the front two seats that can turn around. Extras....outside rise off shower mainly to clean kayak and feet. I have yet to find a video with a layout plan for my needs. I prefer a fixed bed.

Hi! Do you have any advice on sourcing good bench seats? I'm trying to find one that is relatively affordable and folds down flat to help form a bed, but I might just have to get a fixed one since it's so difficult to find under 2k!
Thanks so much for sharing! I have gotten so much inspiration from you both!

I have discovered that the California Auto Association, AAA will not tow a converted camper van if it does not have a back seat. Fortunately I have a seat.

👏🏻👍🏻🙏🏻❤️ Great Advice guys THANK YOU l have been checking out the Sliding Consitina Wet Bath builds. The shower enclosure that collapse into a small size when not in use, the toilet a slide out into the space when required and when unfolded are super shower and in times you don't need it you get so much extra living space. What do you think??🇦🇺🙋🏻‍♀️🥰
