Something to keep in mind when you're watching or listening to these bands from the early 70's or late 60's: At that point, they didn't know what they were to become. It's awesome to see the raw hunger, the desire to just ROCK, the energy, before they had a reputation and style to 'live up to'. This is when legends were made.
@@MidnightmidwayPeople like me? No, dimwit, I’m not talking about people putting him down, I am referring to his lack of mentions when media talk about “greatest drummers.” I think the same applies to Barriemore Barlow of Jethro Tull.
@@Midnightmidway First, I do apologize for calling you a dimwit -- I didn't realize you had a congenital problem. Second, yes, he is criminally underrated. Go ahead and pull up any "Best Rock Drummer" list and he doesn't hit the top 20 in any, which is ridiculous in context of the massive influence Sabbath had on metal.
The two microphones are because of the recording for the film. One of them are going to the P.A. (Live sound in the room), and one is going to the recording setup.
Bill Ward is a LEGEND as is Black Sabbath! I saw them live in Houston Texas back in 2013 minus Bill Ward. But it is one of the Greatest concert experiences of my life and they opened with War Pigs!!!
I’m an old school punk guy. Not sure who criticizes Ozzy’s voice? Is it other metal fans? Curious. Because anybody that started whining about his voice would get a boot out the door in my house.
as an old guy, i can tell you that 1 mic was for the performance, and the other went directly to a tape recorder, you may also notice mics on the front of amps in some old videos ;) big love to all people :)
Bill Ward, the drummer for Black Sabbath, was a contemporary of John Bonham. They appeared on the local scene together and seemed to share many qualities
I used to see Black Sabbath all the time.At the Fillmore West in San Francisco. He is the epitome of a rock star. And the drummer was unbelievable right
If you notice too Bill is holding his drumsticks backwards. I always thought that was just to keep them from breaking 😆 but I've heard it was just for more sound.
I call the drummer affectionately “Animal”. If you remember the kids show “The Muppets”, they had a character called Animal, who was a drummer. See if you can find an old video of the Muppets band and Animal! You’ll see what I mean 😁
8:49 Two mics were often used during a live recording back then, one went through to the PA system and another went to the tape. It was a quick way to route the sound where you wanted it to go. Hope this helps
This is hands down, the best reaction to this video. The passion expressed on your face as it is hitting your soul. Feeling everything we felt when we first heard this performance. You are a true music fan, that is something you cannot fake or hide.
My fave reaction to War Pig. Bar none. I don't know what those drums did to Bill Ward to cause him to beat them so savagely but damn. Dude was absolutely going crazy. Thanks. I thoroughly enjoyed this. Rawk on.
Thank you for reacting to the live version. Someone made a modern music video of this song and it kills the soul and vibe of the song. So many reactors pick that version. Verdy, there is new Babymetal for you.
Killer, early live version of this song, with different lyrics but a very powerful, raw metal vibe. incredible performance by everyone. YES, Bill Ward is beating the crap out of drum kit! Iommi on guitar is especially heavy, it is hard to believe but their great music has aged as well as anyone else from that great era. Ultimate band for a deep dive, this song is also great in front of 250,000 fans at the legendary California Jam 1974. Incredible set, wipping up the crowd, well worth checking out as are Deep Purple and ELPs sets there, one of the best shows ever. Good luck on your Sabbath Voyage, do them by album like you have others, start with their self titled debut and go from there, you will not regret it, they will blow your mind! Enjoy. 🔥🎵🎸🎤🎸🎶🔥
GET it, Verdy! I've been a way from your chan for a while, the braces looked great, but now does, too, congrats! Yes, this song/vid is one that compels you to rewind and watch this epic greatness again and again!
Another really good song from this same Gig is' Fairies wear Boots' it shows the drummer Bill Ward from behind but also shows the bass player Geezer Butler you get to watch his fingers fly on the bass👍
On top of their amazing musicianship are the excellent lyrics. Great musicians are one thing, but to have meaningful lyrics that tickle the brain is super rare.
What an awesome performance! The 2 mics are usually for noise isolation. It helps to eliminate hum and feedback for clearer vocals. Useful on a small stage with a lot of loud instruments.
I also wanted to tell you that in 1970 the lyrics are totally different than lyrics on the album. You need to listen to a later version to really understand how great this song is. The words changed, and the meaning of the song changed.
@@gregbacon9808I was at California jam 74 also most of the day I was in that corner right below Emerson lake and Palmer's balloon was that Greg lake went up in

Ozzy being legible. Bill Ward abusing drums as if they owe him money, Iomi losing the tips of two fingers and still making these sounds along with geezer butlers driving bassris? AMAZING!
I just saw Iron Maiden in Chicago. They still do an amazing live show. You should check out ANYTHING Live by Iron Maiden. I think Powerslave was one of their best, but they are all good.
Perhaps somebody already addressed this in the comments but the reason for the second microphone is usually one goes out to the main PA system and the second goes to a recording device or sometimes each microphone would go to its own separate PA in an attempt to get the vocals louder than the guitars in the band blasting away behind the vocalist. Sound reinforcement was really in its infancy at this point
2 mics were invented by Owsley Stanley, sound engineer/chemist for the Grateful Dead, in order to eliminate feedback in the vocalists mic. He also designed their logo, created the Wall of Sound, and made the best LSD of the era. I can attest. ✌️❤️🎶
I think I'm in love with her.. I can see her heart through her eyes,, it's as if she has 2 hearts, one for each eye because she shows love through her eyes,, I don't know if it's just me, but that's what I see in her
You gave ozzy (vocals), lead guitar (tony iommi), and drums (bill ward) a shout-out, but it was harder to single out the bass player (geezer butler). Please please check out "INTO THE VOID." Geezer will blow you away with his phenomenal bass playing. (Geezer and Bill are an unmatchable rhythm section).
I think you overlook the base player! He is what gives them their sound. He is the only base player that stands out in music. The bass is what gives this music its sinister tone. Geezer Butler is the most powerful bass player I know.
Ozzy Osbourne was the lead singer of Black Sabbath then left to do a Solo Projects. Roni James Dio was the lead singer then .after some time he reunion with the Band . This year Ozzy when in to the RHOF as a Solo artist & Also in there with Sabbath.
Bill Ward is an absolute BEAST in this video. 🤘🏽
Swing the Chain and Break Out for me
He was a young man full of piss and vinegar as the old timers once said.
That was amazing power and precision. Wow. Yes I've seen it live from the audience.
I read they had to take his drums out on a stretcher after this performance! Lol.
@KB-xt1gj Skins can only take so much Stick. The whole kit was probably in the body shop for a week.

A few good drummers are underrated. Everyone says john bonham was the hardest hitter,
but watch Clem Burke
(blondie drummer).
He hits hard !
@@matt01506 Bonham is cool, but soooooo overrated. Like you said, so many greats are never being mentioned at all. Like Jon Hiseman as well

Thanks much for that. I always wondered about that when I saw it. Other bands in this timeframe too.
I always thought it was to make some sort of "stereo" sound on stage, but this makes way more sense :)
Trop!
Its all the little licks, fills and transitions that make this track amazing....it never gets repetitive
Legendary…Early raw performance…Stunning…
Hey, you got your braces off and are smiling and showing your new choppers. Congratulations!
Bill Ward is a LEGEND as is Black Sabbath! I saw them live in Houston Texas back in 2013 minus Bill Ward. But it is one of the Greatest concert experiences of my life and they opened with War Pigs!!!

The drummer kills it. Young Ozzy rules. Guitar and Bass with atmospherics
Thanks for that! Didn't knew this performance and it's fkn tight! 🤟👹❤️
Fun reaction to a classic.
Man the 70's has such great drummers. Bill Ward doesn't get named much but he was up there with the best.
Bill Ward, John Bonham and Cozy Powell were behemoths

Bonham was best man at Iommi's wedding
I love that she's already hooked on the drums before Bill Ward even gets "serious" about it. Dude played those drums like they owed him money.
Yeah! Her reaction was just like my reaction back in 1993 when I bought my first cd.. paranoid… 3 months before I bought by first cd player!
Yeah , just like Pau from the Warning does to her drums. She is a heavy hitter
