Okay, so I don't play guitar, and I'm no guitar expert, but I think the purpose of the double-necked guitar (or "popsicle guitar" as I call it. I don't think anyone else calls it that, I just call it that because it reminds me of those popsicles with the two sticks that you can break in half. Anyway) is that one of the necks is stringed with six strings, the other with twelve. Also, one of the necks is shorter than the other. This means each half produces a different sound from the other depending on which side is being played. It's basically two separate guitars smooshed into one, and I believe the purpose of this is that, ordinarily, when being played live, the guitarist would not be able to play both kinds of guitars on a single song, not without a considerable pause between playing while they switched guitars. But with this guitar, all he needs to do is move from one side of the guitar to the other to switch the guitar sound instantly. I think that's what that's all about. People who actually know more about guitars, please correct me if I'm wrong.
The double neck guitar is a 12 string on the top neck and a standard 6 string on the bottom. The musician can either play the top or bottom neck depending on what kind of sound he wants. 12 strings will give a richer and fuller sound.
Girly girl. I think this has to be one if not the best reaction i’ve watched Rekon you been struck by hammers of the gods 🤘❤️👏👏👏👏👏. New subscriber double neck guitar
Double neck guitar has 12 strings on the top and 6 strings on the bottom neck. The top is for rythum strumming and finger picking and a few other sounds. The bottom 6 strings are usually for lead guitar riffs, tapping, harmonics, feed back ect. I hope I explained it right? Too much to go into detail.
The guitarist Jimmie Page was using a bow from either a violin or cello to play his electric guitar among other different technics not shown in the film, I say film because those a different clips from movies taken during concerts back in the 1970's.
You can see it in snippets in the video compilation playing he's playing the electric guitar with a violin bow... About the guitars, if you look closely in the video, the top arm has 12 strings and the lower arm has the standard 6 string. the 12 string basically has a different sound set. it's easier to carry the one double necked guitar them to wear 2 guitar during the performance...
This was from 1969 from 'Led Zeppelin II' (Led Zeppelin's 2nd album), and before Led Zeppelin debuted in early 1969, there was no such thing as 'heavy rock' or 'heavy metal'... U had guitar-oriented bands like Jimi Hendrix Experience, Vanilla Fudge, and The Who... but music back then was The Beatles, The Doors, The Rolling Stones, etc... Even Jimmy Page (guitar) was in a band called The Yardbirds until 1968, which is when he put Led Zeppelin together and recorded their debut album. The power behind Led Zeppelin was definitely John Bonham's powerhouse drumming... combined w/ Robert Plant's high vocals... That was what made Zeppelin's first album the first 'heavy rock' record... Jimmy Page (guitar) wanted to harness that power w/ the bass grooves of John Paul Jones and added layers of guitar to make the music heavier... The songs were intense and blues-oriented. Nobody had heard anything like it before, and in 1969, the album rapidly sold and gave Led Zeppelin instant fame. Hoping to capitalize on their live power in concert... Page recorded 'Led Zeppelin II' in 1969 w/ more original songs and added more layers of instruments to make the record a classic... He would experiment in the studio w/ sounds and depth while recording and gave the album a quality that changed music forever. 'Whole lotta love' was released as a single in 1969 and it became a huge hit... 'Led Zeppelin II' went to #1 on the US charts and Led Zeppelin were massive by 1970 after just 2 years as a band. They eventually had to give credit to blues songwriter Willie Dixon for the track... Those 2 Zeppelin records inspired a plethora of bands to play heavy rock music... Deep Purple changed their sound in 1970 to play heavy rock... Black Sabbath also debuted in 1970... There wasn't a band in the 70's (or 80's) who wasn't inspired by Led Zeppelin. They were the originators of what became heavy metal and hard rock music. And this was where it began... Years later, the members of Led Zeppelin rejected the term 'heavy metal'... they wanted to be known for their diverse sound (that included acoustic music) and not just as a 'heavy rock' band 😈
Thank you for your reaction to this iconic song from Led Zeppelin. In the instrumental part, you see Jimmy Page, the guitarplayer, use a cello bow on his guitar making those sounds. Keep on with Led Zeppelin, my favorite is "Since I've been loving you" ua-cam.com/video/4gT63xovuWE/v-deo.html
It's a Gibson twin neck. The top neck is 12 string and the lower is 6 string. It is great for quick switching guitar sounds from section to section in a piece of music. The pickups can be set to different tones as well as the switch in character between 6 and 12 string sounds.
The double guitar is one that is a twelve string (somewhat unusual), and one that is a six string (the standard most guitars use). 12 string gives it a little more full of a sound (especially acoustic 12 strings).
The double necked guitar is two guitars in one, one is a 12 string and one is a 6 string works really good in stairway but if is not really needed in this song.
I find myself smiling every time I watch your reactions.. Jimmy Page was famous for the double neck guitar and using a bow on the guitar strings. One of my favorite Zepp songs.. also love Kashmir if you've never heard that one.
Notice that one of the double guitar necks has 12 strings, and the other 6 strings. 12 strings has a fuller sound, and the guitarist can make each guitar have a different tone - clean or rough.
The double neck guitar is both a 12 string and a 6 string on one frame. Most use just a 6 string, however there are those who play a 12 string. For those who play both this setup is perfect.
Jimmy Paige….one of the top 5 greatest electric guitar players played the double guitar for Led Zeppelin 9:20 ….Whole Lotta Love was a very sexy song with its lyrics……Led Zeppelin was one of the greatest heavy rock bands in rock history….Stairway to Heaven……it’s all time great was …..an exception…..slower paced…most of their music was high energy. Robert Plant was the lead singer with a unique voice…..their live stage performances were always sold out and unrivaled….it couldn’t get any better….they were natural raw talent!
The double neck guitar is a 12 string & a 6 string and used for Stairway To Heaven (1975). I think the video you are watching for Whole Lotta Love (1969) is a montage of clips ranging from early 1968/9, date of Whole Lotta Love, to 1975/9 performances where Jimmy Page would have been using the double guitar on stage.for some songs. His go to guitar was a Gibson Les Paul single neck 6 string
Led Zeppelin were supremely talented. Listening to an album you hear 12 different songs, with 12 different styles, but all with their flavor. They do make you want to dance, but a lot of people did a lot more than dancing to this classic blues cover.
This double necked guitar has a 6-string lower neck and a twelve string upper neck. You can see something similar on The Band & the Staples doing "The Weight", but in that one the guitarist has an 8-string Mandolin on top. The guitarist for Cheap Trick (see their song "Surrender") plays with many-necked guitars.
Those sound effects at 4:00 were from playing a guitar with a bow-none of the new 'electronic' effects. Jimmy was also one of the first to play a double-neck guitar in concert
In case no one has mentioned it, a double-neck guitar has a 6-string neck and a 12-string neck. The 6-string guitar is the typical standard type guitar. The 12-string guitar has 12 strings which basically produces a fuller, sound. I've owned many guitars, but never a 12-string. The guitar company Rickenbacker has had a reputation for making signature-sounding 12-string guitars.
If I ever have to pick a song being the last one I may ever listen to it will be this one. It has everything a rock song needs and more. Paige is brilliant on the guitar and using a violin bow to make unique sounds during the break is fantastic. Plant's vocals are not from this world. Drummer Jon Bonhom plays his drum like a machine gun and John Paul Jones playing the jazz bass is without knowing a real fitting word, "fat". And the lyrics, well, it is obvious what it is about and the music with the lyrics combined is 5.33 minutes of bedroom activity ... with happy end. Listen to the song a few more times and you will never take it from your playlist anymore. It just is that awesome.
The strange electronic sounds in the middle part of Whole Lotta Love are produced using an instrument called a theramin. Played by guitarist Jimmy Page, the theramin had an antenna that controlled the pitch and volume of the tones depending on the distance and height of his hand relative to the antenna. Page can be seen playing the theramin in the live version of Whole Lotta Love from the 1973 concert at Madison Square Garden.
most of the footage in that video is not from whole lotta love but from many sources, times and different performances. that bit's from a live performance of dazed and confused. @@macleadg

The double neck guitar has a 12-string neck on the top and a regular 6 string on the bottom. This way the artist can quickly & easily switch between them because there is a huge difference in the way they sound.
The double guitar was built out of necessity.. there were some versions before but he had his built for Stairway specifically because of of those 12 string changes.. it then lended use to Song Remains abs many other classic tunes.. such a beautiful guitar..
Not sure if this is true but I heard on a radio program years ago (1980s) that this song was about a married female fan who was obsessed with Robert Plant in England when they were starting out. He and her had a thing going on when her husband was not around or unaware hence the back door man part. The double guitar was so he could sound different in the same song without swapping guitars.
Te double neck is a 12 string on one neck and 6 on the other.. The beginning of Stairway to Heaven uses the 12 to get the sound he wanted. The 6 for the ending guitar solo. . Thhe reason for a double neck is to not have to have to change guitars in the middle of the song..
They actually took old, American black blues and, basically, added rocket fuel to it. Some of their songs are actually covers of songs by Robert Johnson and Sonny Boy Williamson among others. Look into Robert Johnson. It's kind of amazing how they translated his stuff.
Violin bow, Jimmy Page, used it on his Les Paul Electric to get that special special sound and effect. From what I understand he also used it in the song Dazed and Confused. I just Googled it I cheated. Jimmy Page uses a twin neck guitar for 6 string and 12 string capability so he doesn't have to switch guitars in the middle of a song.
The double neck Gibson guitar which Jimmy Page made famous he's the The creator and the guitarist for Led Zeppelin! One neck is a six string and the top neck is a 12 string to play different kinds of notes to get close enough like studio recording live
Its called "Rock and Roll"! Over 50 years old and still awesome! One of the greatest and most talented and diverse bands ever! Try "Since Ive been Loving You"-Live, Immigrant Song, Ramble On is a great twist, Black Dog, so much more! Enjoy, its worth it!
Look at their 1973 concert at Madison Square Garden. The double-neck guitar has a 12-string on the top and a standard 6-string on the bottom neck. You are listening to "Hard Rock" which is Riff based, consisting of a 3-4 person band, the music has roots in American Blues. Being a sophisticated listener means you have developed a deeper understanding of what it takes to make the sound you're hearing, musicianship etc. One does not just touch a guitar string and out comes what you're hearing. Sensitivity of touch and manipulation, along with carefully selected tube amplifiers and sound effect pedals and boxes are combined and offer an infinite soundscape that must be expertly manipulated to produce what you're listening to. Have a few drinks before listening to this music.
Double neck guitar the top neck is a 12 string the bottom is a 6 string jimmy page had it built for the concert at Madison square garden 1973 For the song stairway to heaven ❤
The dual neck guitar is a twelve string and a six string. The twelve string has a fuller sound and closer to the sound of an acoustic. Each has its place. :)
This was one of my favorite songs back in 1969, the beer tasted good when this was playing on the juke boxes and radios. Too bad they only had a few songs that I liked back then.
Led Zeppelin was one of the most musically talented bands in history. This music is my generations music. These songs were #1 when I was graduating high school. Zeppelin can play Stairway to Heaven, a mellow deep song, with incredible lyrics and poetry, and the next sone is this, Whole lotta Love, which sounds completely different. Most bands can’t do that, most bands sounds all sound relatively similar. The crazy sounds you hear in this song, are sounds of Jimmy Page playing those sounds on his guitar. No one else could ever play those things! He’s a master of the guitar, a true legend. (I’m a guitarist so know about Page) Jimmy Page even played his guitar in these songs using a bow for a violin! No one before or after has ever done these things like he did which created these sounds you hear. The guitar with 2 necks, is a Gibson SG double neck, one neck has 6 strings, the other neck has 12 strings, and he tuned the strings in different unique ways, then used violin bow and even drum sticks to play his guitar. Amazing, crazy, unique sounds. And we have to remember Robert Plant singer, wow, and the other band members all fantastic musicians. They were so very versatile, they could completely change their sound from one song to the next, sounding like a different band! Amazing. You MUST invest the time to go through their albums and listen to their music. And while the music is awesome, far surpassing anything today, bigger and even better than the sound, was their stage presence when you saw them live. It was like they were “fake” . Hahaha. What I mean is “Bigger than life”. Dripping with charisma. All any of us could think at the time was “they’re not normal people.” “They’re Led Zeppelin”!
the gibson guitar that jimmy page is playing has two necks. the top neck is a 12 string guitar and the bottom is a6 string guitar. and the weir d sound you hear in the middle section is made using what is called a "theramin". an electronic device with a tall antenna coming out of it. as you move your hand close to it, it will emit those noises you hear. it's a motion activated device.
*INSTA SUBSCRIBED* Hey Inna..! My G.O.A.T. band ! 1 song down, bout 55 to go.! *DO NOT DENY* yourself the sheer musical pleasure and appreciation of learning about *Led Zeppelin* ! Time to get the LED OUT....
At 4:30 you paused and asked, "what was that?". Actually Jimmy Page did several things such as slide the pick up or down strings, use a bow to play strings, etc. This video was taken from clips and matched pretty well with the audio, but it does a great job of delivering the music in all its power and glory.
The "double guitar" is a 12 string guitar on top and a 6 strong below. It's a Gibson EDS-1275. In the video made up of a number of performances you also get a quick chance to see Jimmy Page playing a Gibson Les Paul with a bow and you get a couple quick looks at Jimmy's famous Dragon Fender Telecaster (that started out as Jimmy's mirror Telecaster).
The double neck guitar is a Gibson SG Body Style. One neck ( the top one) is a 12 string guitar and the other ( the bottom neck) is a six string guitar. Both can be used for rhythm and lead. Besides looking very cool it is an efficient way to have both types of guitars available to play without changing instruments. This guitar played by Jimmy Page is not cheap and Mr. Page plays Gibsons exclusively as far as I know. (Gibson Les Paul and SG guitars) Hope that helps.😍
Double-necked guitars - usually , though there may be differences - are used because one is a regular 6-string guitar while the other has 12 strings for different soun/intonation. But I saw all sorts of double-necked guitars, even includinig one electric guitar and one bass guitar. 🙂

Oh wow! Thank you very much for the explanation! So iconic of them to refuse the “heavy metal” term!
Top song. Your getting better with your reviews.
Hi JC! Thank you very much for your comment, I will soon check the other one as well 😊
nope. no bow used on whole lotta love.
You knew exactly what it was about. Great reaction.
❤️👍🏽👍☘️
The double necked guitars purpose is to provide a normal 6 string neck with the option to switch to a 12 string neck. Such an awesome instrument. :)
First seconds and you were in...Led Zeppelin fever catched you!
Led zeppelin is best rock band ever. Black dog is my sugestion. Exciting live and perfectionist in The studio
Thank you very much for the suggestion 😊
Zep has their rocking side and then they can switch right into Blues, then switch into a ballad....fantastic band with hugely musical inventiveness.
Double neck guitar. The top neck has 12 strings, and the bottom neck has 6 strings. They can be tuned differently and have different pick ups as well.
Paige is playing a double-neck Gibson guitar. One neck is a 6-string and the other neck is a 12-string.
Page can be seen playing the theramin in the live version of Whole Lotta Love from the 1973 concert at Madison Square Garden.
that, and guitar with heavy feedback - especially those low grumbly sounds.
It’s mainly the violin bow on the electric guitar.
no bow used on whole lotta love. @@macleadg
@@coelacanth9821 3:44
most of the footage in that video is not from whole lotta love but from many sources, times and different performances. that bit's from a live performance of dazed and confused. @@macleadg
Les Zeppelin changed my life…never listened something like that before…I was about 10 years old and that just really blew my mind when I first listened whole Lotta Love… the picture I have is my older cousin and friends gathering listening this song…
I think you must check out more of Led Zeppelin…just 2 ones of a lot of mind blowing band are Over the Hills and Far Away and Traveling Riverside Blues…Led Zeppelin the best rock band ever!!
"You've been cooling, I've been drooling" Inna: This is some spicy lyrics. Hmm, but no comments on "I'm gonna give you every inch of my love"😛😄
A 12 string snd a 6 string combination.
Jimmy can switch between the two without having to change guitars mid song.
Each has it’s own voice.
Since I’ve Been Loving You live at MSG should be next :-)
Inna : "I'm in schocked... what was that??"
Me : "No idea?. really... hahaha" 😁
Kashmir from Live concert " Celebration Day " . What a performance at that age .
The double neck Gibson guitar which Jimmy Page made famous he's the The creator and the guitarist for Led Zeppelin! One neck is a six string and the top neck is a 12 string to play different kinds of notes to get close enough like studio recording live
Psychedelic a bow across the strings, tripping.
The double-neck guitar Jimmy Page is playing is a 12-string guitar on the top neck & a 6-string guitar on the bottom neck.
You Shook Me and The Lemon Song. Both very heavily blues influenced songs.
Double neck guitar the top neck is a 12 string the bottom is a 6 string jimmy page had it built for the concert at Madison square garden 1973 For the song stairway to heaven ❤
the 4 gods of music, man i miss them.
Gods of music is a good description
The double necked guitar was used on other songs, the second neck was 12 string used on songs like, "Stairway to Heaven" .
That’s a double neck guitar. 12 string on top, 6 string on bottom! The strange sound was Jimmy playing his guitar with a bow.
(Gibson Les Paul and SG guitars)
Hope that helps.😍
A subtle, delicate ode.
Double-necked guitars - usually , though there may be differences - are used because one is a regular 6-string guitar while the other has 12 strings for different soun/intonation. But I saw all sorts of double-necked guitars, even includinig one electric guitar and one bass guitar. 🙂
The unique sound is a sonic wave theremin. He is NOT using a bow on whole lotta love. He does use a bow on "Dazed and Confused".
