bill ward (black sabbath drummer) said in an interview when they played this in the 70's in america all the vietnam vets who had no legs would all be be held up by their mates , it moved him so much he still teared up 40 years later
Written during the height of the Vietnam War, this song could be about any war, and that makes it timeless and still relevant today, and into the future. The best video of this song comes from the Paris, France concert from 1970, watch Bill Ward kill his drum set. Oh yeah, and Ozzy, Tony and Geezer too.
Also, the boys in Sabbath were born post WW2 in Birmingham, which was in bad shape after the German bombings. They were born to parents who had survived that terrible war, so the pain and fear that haunted their parents was very real and left an impression I’m sure.
The Paris 1970 version would have been a better video selection.... experiencing that as your 1st Sabbath song would make any reasonable person a fan for life. & yes, Bill Ward should have been arrested for assault immediately upon ending the song
Yep, not singing positive about the devil in most cases...which is the opposite if what he's accused of and playfully went along with...All the "new sounds" popular music acts were not abandoned by most fans
In HS during a unit on poetry, a student read the lyrics, without music, the prim and proper teacher loved it. The student then started playing the song, the teacher was aghast at the thought of this kind of music being played in school. He did end up listening to the song for how the words were put to music.
This song in particular was relevant when I first heard it in the 70s and still is today. Great anti-war song. My favorite album was their Paranoid release. Enjoyed your reaction to it! Peace!
Anti-War song that ushered in the heavy metal era! At the time of release was considered somewhat controversal, but timeless anthem that plays well today and many many years to come! Thanks for plating this!!

The lyrics in the Paris video aren't the same as the recorded studio version, though. I prefer the studio lyrics. However, they were rockin' it in the video. Love watching it.
So glad you guys enjoyed (almost) 50 year old British heavy rock / birth of metal! Makes us old guys feel good that the music we grew up with is being appreciated by a younger audience!! Keep going - Sabbath is a long journey!
The video is mind-blowing. But I’m so glad you were able to show the lyrics of this song. I’m 62 and I never ever thought I’d even listen to Black Sabbath (I did not like them), let alone eventually listen to a song of theirs that I now consider a masterpiece. This is brilliant stuff.
This song depicts the war like attitude from government and the emotional havoc it creates for society, individuals, families, love ones who leave for war and loves ones who wait for their soldiers return or not.. WW2 was form 1939 to 1945 Members of Black Sabbath( born 1948-49) are from Birmingham England a city known for its blue collar workers smoke stack industrial steel and manufacturing.. The parents/family of the members witnessed WW2 and the destruction it imposed on England(possibly family members were killed in WW2) .. This message of war was most likely echoed to them as children on what the horrors of war are like that just occurred few years before they were born.. That siren you hear in the beginning of the song( is a real siren sound) was used to sound off to warn the local town/villagers that war attack was emanant, a scary sound to hear during that time with most wondering where to go and hide... A very pivotal song
I forget sometimes how powerful these songs are having always had them around. To be able to go back and hear them again for the first time would be great.
They are the start of heavy metal. Blending blues with industrial doom. Lots a great ones here are my favs - Fairies Wear Boots, Snow Blind, Sweat Leaf, Paranoid
Sabbath was the genesis of heavy metal. Everything started there and branched out... Heaven and Hell and Sign of the Southern Cross are two heavy tunes.
what I have always found interesting, when this first came out, I bought the album, and reclined in my room and began...when War Pigs started...I sat straight up, and was on the ride...they use the word "Masses" in the first part of the song...generals gather in their "MASSES" just like witches at black "MASSES" profound and interesting... Rock On
Thank You, so much for playing the original version, there are many great live versions on you tube but the original can never be topped. From the same album, Paranoid, Iron Man, Electric Funeral and Fairies Wear Boots are Ikonic, classic songs at the birth of classic Heavy Metal. Black Sabbath's is an extremely deep rabbit hole with many great eras but the original band with Ozzy Osbourne, is forever credited for their amazing musical contributions that have stood the test of time and are eternal Thanks again for listening to great music, no matter when it was made. Enjoy! 🎸
Black Sabbath’s first album was my very first album in 1970, given to me by my older sister. Unbelievable how good this music is even half a century later. Clearly the evolution of music was moving very rapidly at that point in the late sixties and early seventies. Imagine music like Black Sabbath’s coming out ten years earlier. It probably would have caused a riot in the U.S. What’s incredible is that the band decided to make their niche in the exploding rock field by transforming horror movie themes into rock, and heavy metal was born. “Reflecting on the strange fact that people would pay good money to be scared by a movie like Black Sabbath [which was playing in a theater across the street from the band’s rehearsal space], the band decided to make music that would scare people.” Which no other rock band had ever focused on as the theme of their music. Ironically their lyrics are often very spiritual. And the music itself is a strange kind of genius.
51 years old and still relevant AF. Which is sad AF. Also, how anyone could accuse them of being Satanists or whatever when these lyrics were out there blows my mind.
66 years old here. Joined the military at the end of Vietnam (Navy 1974-1979). We all thought back then we figured it out and would "not be fooled again". Tried to tell the ones behind us but they didn't listen. Always question the people in power. They are not there for all of us.

Great opening set, they were hard as nails and dead serious about showing the planet who Van Halen was. Then Sabbath came out, Ozzy was in good form and they showed who was boss. Fantastic, all time concert I will remember forever...
Sabbath had one of the best Rhythm Sections in rock history, this song is the proof of that, the drumming was tight as all kind and the bass kept up with it.
To give this context, this came out in the early 1970’s and just utterly stunned everyone. There was no sound like this at the time. It blew people mind and even scared the shit out of people enough to label devil worshiping music. This is the biggest peace protest song ever!

Black Sabbath did a “final tour” a few years back. Me and friend went for our 30th birthdays. I got a bad migraine 2 songs in. I stuck it out and it was totally worth the huge amount of pain.
Food for thought: Tony Iommi, the guitarist in this band, plays left handed, so his right hand is the one fingering the notes while his left picks them. Soon before their first album, he was working at a metal shop and accidentally severed the tips of the middle and ring fingers on his right hand. He plays with leather thimbles on those two fingers, but essentially is playing with half of his fretting hand... BAMF.
Listened to this while in the Navy and at sea off the coast of Vietnam in 1971. Would get high when listening to Black Sabbath this was during the Vietnam War. I was one of those "poor people".
Glad you like this song. It’s my favorite Sabbath song And I get to see and hear it live by going to see a Black Sabbath tribute band Bit of Finger which features my son who accurately plays the drums of Bill Ward along with the other members / bass and guitar/ to great accuracy including vocals So their music is still alive!
I was very young when this new form of music appeared almost out of nowhere. Sabbath to this day makes me feel young - still relevant today. I would suggest "Snowblind" and "National Acrobat" by these guys to show off their diversity to you.

As I recall, the long instrumental intro is actually a separate song called ‘Lukes Wall’. The two songs are typically played together. ‘Lukes Wall/War Pigs’. These are the beginnings of metal music as it is known today. A lot of sound engineers had no idea how to record them in the early days
Umm ... no. Lukes Wall is the outro. I have an original vinyl that I bought in 1970 and the label on the record itself lists War Pigs first ... Lukes Wall second.
my God,you two are so frikin open minded and willing to adjust to a new mindset from song to song, from genre to genre, allways givin it a fair listen. This anti war heavy symphony is not a beautiful listen, but still so poerful in its dark protest and so masterfully arranged and played, and you guys get that. One day you enjoy The Bee Gees or Earth, wind and fire, and next time something like this, and the respect and musical understanding is allways present with you.Such a joy to see you travel with your musical time-machine!
I recommend Hand of Doom, from same album. It is about Heroine use, actually the whole album is recommended. The Paranoid album is considered one of the best Metal albums ever released.
The songs off all their early albums is crammed full of transitions. Their lyrics are always surprising. Then you have the wonderful rhythm section of Bill Ward (drums) and Geezer Butler (bass), solid as a rock. When one swings it the other plays straight, and then they switch.
I bought both the first and second Black Sabbath albums when they were released in 1970. I was 15 at the time. Also saw them live at Portsmouth Polytechnical College in May 1970. Listening to this today, it's amazing to me how fresh it still sounds. It really is hard to imagine that this music is now over 50 years old! Chicago from their 1st album (Chicago - Prologue August 29 1968) The protesters on that day were chanting "The Whole World's Watching" and that is the lead-in to the song.
Sabbath is the grandaddys of metal. The number of great songs they produced over those first 8 albums before Ozzy left was staggering. One of the greatest hard rock bands ever. What metal band since them doesn't honor the great Black Sabbath?
You're the best reactors, you really sincerely feel it, seems like. Sabbath was a perfect complementary band, everyone contributed in unique ways. Bill was a monster on drums, Geezer & Bill were great rhythm section, Geezer was an amazing lyricist, Tony was THE all time guitar riff master and main musical writer and arranger, and Ozzy had a unique voice and gift for creating melodies. Magic. Many great Sabbath songs go through these changes in sections, like War Pigs. Some other great songs are Into the Void, Hand of Doom, Megalomania, Don't Start-Symptom of the Universe, Supernaut, Killing Yourself to Live, ... long list. Spiral Architect is unusual one for them, and personal favorite. Be well.
Great musicianship in this tune, especially the drumming. Some things have changed since Vietnam and some haven't. War sucks, but sometimes there is no choice.
This is one of the best songs ever written, and sadly it's message is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow.

I was very young when this new form of music appeared almost out of nowhere. Sabbath to this day makes me feel young - still relevant today. I would suggest "Snowblind" and "National Acrobat" by these guys to show off their diversity to you.
I got every Ozzy Osbourne Black Sabbath ever recorded that I could get my hands on national acrobat is my favorite song by Black Sabbath ozzy says you have to let your body sleep to let your soul live on and hate is living death pretty heavy words man Keep On Truckin$$$$$$$$$$
A MUST HEAR FEEL GOOD SMOOTH SOUL GROOVE,, THE BLACKBYRDS "WALKING IN RHYTHM"
yes the song is Timeless , love it .Your reaction is killer . for a classic rock band ,, i like dont stop .
Nice job you two! This song is legendary 👊
Like Led Zep, a dominant drummer is required for true 'banger' rock. Bill Ward of Sabbath is one of the best !
War pigs is a great song! It's really fun to play on the guitar, & drums too!
@@tsmartin thanks for the correction. I had a feeling I got that wrong
my God,you two are so frikin open minded and willing to adjust to a new mindset from song to song, from genre to genre, allways givin it a fair listen.
Favorite songs FARIES WEAR BOOTS, NIB, THE WIZARD. I’m 52 and have been a Sabbath Fan since I was 9. Fantastic, powerful and way ahead of their time!
I recommend Hand of Doom, from same album. It is about Heroine use, actually the whole album is recommended. The Paranoid album is considered one of the best Metal albums ever released.
Black Sabbath are the gods of heavy metal. This is where it all began
This band, Black Sabbath was part of the Holy Trinity of Rock/Heavy Metal
1. Led Zeppelin
2. Black Sabbath
3. Deep Purple
Love this song.
Great song. Timeless. Message rings true today as it did when it was released
Black Sabbath Volume 4 is a must listen to.
This is so cool I love listening to music with you guys
Truly great song. And the best rock band ever
Always a treat. Inspired thousands of garage bands. Epic!
Love your reaction by the way.😁
Could you please react to Gary Moore Empty Rooms Live in Stockholm? Here is the link:

Thank you so much in anticipation,
I really look forward to seeing your reaction to this.
Kindest regards to you from England. Take care and stay safe.
😊😎🎸
I said this in another reaction to this song, this is a very BIG song with a big message, i appreciate that you did it!! This may very well be the best anti war song ever written!!
War sucks, but sometimes there is no choice.
sabbath!!! epic. I wish I never heard this before so I could hear it for the first time again.
So many Sabbath songs.....saw them 4x's.....twice with Ozzy in the 70's.........check out Supernaut, Behind the Wall of Sleep, the Writ, etc
