Yes, a song to honor his 3 yr old son, who died tragically after falling out of a high rise bldg. I named my son, Connor, as I was pregnant with him when I heard this story.
A heartbreaking song. He wrote it for his 4 year old son who fell to his death from a hotel window. I am amazed at the strength he has to sing this song. It breaks my heart every time. The video is distracting because, although this song was used in that movie, it isn't about the movie. ❤
This brings me to tears every time. It's coming up on one year that my brother passed away and come Saturday my son's are having a memorial for their Dad. My heart has hurt so bad this past yr and I just don't know anymore. I love you guys. You are my fam and you have always been there for me and for that I thank you all.
Written for his sweet, beautiful little son, Connor, who died so tragically and senselessly in a fall. Eric had just begun to spend more time with this sweet baby when the unimaginable happened. As a matter of fact, he arrived at the apartment only minutes after the fall as he and Connor were going to spend that day together. This was just inconceivable that they didn’t take the child out of the apartment until the maintenance man was through with the window, how and why he took the entire window out still boggles the mind! Connor’s mom said the little one was used to running out on their balcony when they were in England, and he wasn’t that familiar with the apartment. It was a friend’s place, I think. It just happened in a split second before anyone was really aware or could stop it. So sad!
i lost both my children it is a pain i wouldn't wish on anyone one was murdered the other took his own life. this song is dedicated to eric's son that fell to his death Connor was only 4 yrs old. Eric's pain came out in this song.
@@deelindastimac7359 Thank you so much my unborn baby girl was murdered i was assaulted my injuries were to great i lost her 4 mins after i got to the ER. she would of been 43 yrs. old in May of this yr. and my son lost his battle with depression in 2017 he was 32 yrs. old. it's a pain i will never get over.
This is on the sound track for the movie "RUSH" starring Jason Patrick , Jennifer Jason Lee , Sam Elliott and Greg Allman. Excellent movie .... Eric wrote this song in memory 9f his precious son Connor that died very tragically. This was the first song I heard when my daddy passed away in 92. It always makes me cry
This song came out when my Papa died, and I can't listen to it without tears (especially knowing why he wrote it). I don't know how Clapton managed to get through it.
Very, very sad. A stunning and beautiful tribute, to Eric’s son Conor, written by Eric. It breaks me every time I hear it and brings me back, to the day, that this tragedy occurred. My heart goes out to EVERY parent, who has experienced the loss, of their precious, child.
I saw Eric Clapton several times. The first was at The Fillmore, at the corner of Fillmore and Geary Blvd., San Francisco. I think it was in the Summer of 1968. He was with Cream, or maybe it was The Cream then, at the time. Also on the bill were the Chambers Bros and either Steve Miller or Paul Butterfield (my husband and I have a dispute over who it was).
This song really hits. He wrote this song when he had seen that his son fell out a high rise apartment building window. I couldn't live after seeing my child stories down on the pavement.
I think maybe the background information about the meaning behind this song should have been given with the suggestion to react to it, because this is definitely a song where that is needed to understand exactly what you are listening to. Not the reactors fault that they didn't know the story behind it, but rather the one making the request should have been able to see that them not knowing could lead to awkward commentary that might not be ideal when you are reacting to a song about the tragic death of a four year old child, and the parent trying to deal with the grief of loosing the most beloved and precious person in their life. So yeah... if you are making requests of similar songs please offer up the needed background information so you have prepared them for exactly what kind of song/story they are going into, because it isn't really fair to them not to prepare them properly.
I completely agree with you. I mean I know that Shawn and Mel’s reactions are true/real and they really love learning about the songs from past decades- but I do feel when people refer quest specific songs that really need the background known about them, then I think it should be given. Because in this case, they’re seeing the film which this movie was part of the soundtrack for and so that’s gonna stick in their mind. They really don’t have any other ideas. And they did understand that this was a song about the other ones pains that they were going through in relation to that story, but I think sometimes it is nice to give a little bit of the background. So right, I think smart ass comments are not appropriate in the cases of reactors because they don’t know most of what we know about the songs. As one they didn’t grow up with them, and two they hadn’t heard them before right? I mean be smart. ♥️🤗
I did drop a tear watching the reaction. I am so blessed to have seen Eric Clapton in concert on a few occasions even in England, and as you said that is what good music is supposed to do. 😊
Nooo.. you really want to cry, watch the documentary on why he actually wrote this song!! I lost my 2 yr old in a drowning accident, I feel ... every single word of this song could explain how I feel every morning when I wake up after dreaming that same dream I have, where I'm looking for him... I break down every single time I hear it, but still I love knowing this is how I'm supposed to feel, this is how every parent who wakes up from a dream to nightmare feels! Everyone of us!!
Tears in Heaven is a song by Eric Clapton and Will Jennings, about the death of Clapton's four-year-old son, Conor, in March, 1991. It appeared on the soundtrack of the film, Rush, later that year. That's where the movie clips are from in the video. In January 1992, Clapton performed the song in front of an audience at Bray Studios, Berkshire, England for MTV Unplugged, with the recording appearing on his Unplugged album. The song was a huge hit & won three Grammy Awards---Best Male Pop Vocal Performance, Song of the Year, and Record of the Year. In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked Tears in Heaven 362nd on its list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
Yes Mark you took the words right out of my mouth. Eric is a founding Rocker..he is top level...he so completely described the grief process...this truly came from his broken heart over his son... Beautiful ❤️
Eric Clapton wrote this song in honor and memory of his 4 and a half year old son. Eric Clapton's son Conor Clapton tragically died in 1991 after accidentally falling out of the window of a 53rd-floor apartment in New York City.
This was dedicated to his son Connor that fell from the window of the 53rd floor he was only 4 years old. Eric was broken hearted he never got over that. i lost both my kids it isn't right. it isn't a love song it is the pain of losing his son.
I cannot imagine his loss. My kids are the purpose of my every breath. Losing one of my babies would kill me. What amazing strength this man must have had to even perform this song without falling apart. Thanks!
Having got over alcohol and substance abuse, then getting his life back together, Clapton faces the tragedy of his son falling out of a tower-block. I have no idea how he held it together. Brings me to tears all the time I hear it.
Someone once tried to describe heaven to me, He simply said that heaven was like coming home after a long plane ride. Finally exiting out to the terminal, and seeing all your relatives and friends smiling at you with open arms, and welcoming you home. Except that you never lose that feeling.
Such a sad song. I played it on the air when it came first came out in 92 and knew of the tragedy of Eric's son and he wrote it for his boy. I heard it at a couple funerals. It's such a powerful song about grief loss loneliness and the hope to see them again.
Rest in Peace Connor Clapton. How Eric had the strength to sing this without collapsing I'll never know. Connor's mother Lori cannot even bear to hear the opening notes of this song. Connor was so beautiful! How can any parent recover from losing their child? My eyes are filling with tears as I type this.
It's more sad than you think Mel. It was used for the movie, but Eric wrote it for Connor, his 4 year old son. He fell out of a hotel window and died. It was emotional because it was real for Eric. 👵🏿🙏🏾😥💜
It's not a wedding song, from the Movie Rush but written by Eric Clapton in honour of his 3 y.o. son who tragically died when he fell a few stories down. When Eric performed this song I literally felt the pain in the words, the way he played the guitar and the look on his face. Also have never been able to watch Rush again, it was too emotional to endure.
Eric Clapton has been one of my favorite musicians, song writers and singers for many years and has also been an inspiration to me and the music and songs that I once tried to write myself. The loss of his son is what lead him to write this beautiful but yet heartbreaking song.
He wrote this song originally for his son who tragically died but it was used for the movie Rush with Jason Patrick and Jennifer Jason Leigh. Great movie .
I wanted to play this song at my son's funeral, he died at 2 months old, we ended up playing "It's So Hard To Say Goodbye". This song always touches my heart and I know my son in Heaven is waiting for me. 😥❤
This song played on the radio when we were coming back from my grandmother’s funeral. She was more like a mother to me, and I think of her every time I hear this.
BTW, Will Jennings, who co-wrote this song with Eric Clapton, also co-wrote "Up where we belong ( from the movie "An officer and a gentleman" ) and "My heart will go on" ( Titanic ) and dozens more great songs.
Oh man...tears filling the eyes ...again...The back story to this song is sooo very sad. Can't even imagine. It was in a movie but the reality is so much more sad. Thanks guys.
This song to his son Connor is so heartfelt. So amazing considering the pain of loss, of a 5 year old so tragically. That instead of falling back into addiction he wrote one of his most beautiful songs.
Yes, this song is beautiful! It was for his 3 yr old son who passed. It was also on the soundtrack of the movie that was playing in the video. The movie was called Rush starring Jennifer Jason Leigh and Jason Patric. It was a really good film!💖💖
It still boggles my mind how a cleaning lady could leave a window open in a high rise with a toddler running around unattended. And with no screen on the window. Baffling.
A tragic but beautiful song dedicated to his son who died in a tragic accident falling out of a high-rise window and for years he felt the guilt and this song that he wrote and played was what eventually healed him as much as can be expected from such an event.
If anyone hasn't mentioned this, the video footage is from a movie called "Rush" Starring Jason Patrick and Jennifer Jason Lee (Leigh?) about under cover narcotics agents. Perfect song for the movie, but like the video here the movie is very hard to watch.
Mel when you said a wedding song, I thought ok let's wait until the song turns and you realize it's not. He wrote this song and the death of his son. Very emotional tune, he sings it totally from his heart. Great reaction!
He sang it to his son who died at a young age....and it was the song played at my sons funeral...who died at birth.....it means a lot to me...it's twenty years ago but the tears come all the same!❤❤
As everyone has stated, the song was written for his son. The film clips are from the movie 'Rush' whiched used this song in the soundtrack. I enjoy your show. You two are adorable.

The song he wrote to honor is son Connor, who at 3 years old died in a tragic fall. The video is from a movie in 1991, Rush. This song was on the soundtrack.
He wrote this about his 4 year old who fell out building. RIP Little Guy. 28 years ago this was played at my aunts funeral and it tears me up to this day! This is Rush the movie. The movie is about addiction to herion and drugs!
