When she said that she'd not heard of Eric Clapton, I felt it like a knife through my heart. Ok,, I'm old. Eric Clapton is Slowhand, God. Labelled as one of the greatest guitarists of all time. But Stacey is young and not a music nerd, so I'll forgive her. This song is one of the most beautiful ever recorded. The emotions come to the surface regularly when hearing this.
Eric has had one of the most extraordinary lives and careers imaginable….his long battle with drink and drug addictions, tragic loss of his son and musical friends (Stevie Ray Vaughan amongst others), his friendships with the Beatles, collaborations with many greats, his multimillion selling albums….his is a story worth exploring! Stacy, your reaction to this is so heartfelt, it was such a horrible, stupid accident to befall a beautiful, innocent little boy.
I am sure I am in the minority here, but as wonderful as this song is and how it sparks such raw emotion in all of us, for me his emotional masterpiece is "River of Tears". The studio version and the live version have SUCH a different energy, I have never been able to pick a favorite. Just the opening wonderful slow melancholy chord progression instantly puts me into that space where everything else just fades away and there is nothing in the universe but the song.

I lost my wife in a horrible way, I was broken for a long time, this beautiful song gave me peace and forgiveness 😢

Written about his 4 year old son, who fell out of a 53rd floor window that was left open. What makes it even more heart breaking is that Eric Clapton was a few blocks away on his way to pick up his son to go to the zoo.
Also, it amazes me that he could even write this let alone perform it. The pain, but endurance in this man must be mental.

RIP Conor Clapton. I can’t fathom the depth of loss he feels. I can’t even imagine being able to sing that song just knowing. As a Father listening to this song makes me tear up. Enough to make a grown man cry.
Eric Clapton has lived an extraordinary life full of up’s & down’s from losing friends & family to battling & overcoming addiction he has written songs about them that we can relate to his heartache with our own to help with closure from grief
My dad is a musician, and Eric Clapton is one of his favourite artists. In 1989 we lost my older brother in a tragic drowning accident. He was 12 years old. My dad plays this song quite often. Only once become a parent myself, did it hit me how hard it must have been for him. And you are absolutely correct, we need to allow ourselves to time to cry, to grieve, to be sad, even to rage, but do not stay in that place. Life does in fact move on. You never forget, and the pain never goes away, but you must also allow yourself to be happy and appreciate the everyday miracles of life. Thank you for your raw and honest reaction ❤🩹

This is the most beautiful song Eric has ever written. I saw him in concert in '98 and he played this song with a 20-piece orchestra behind him. I've since seen him in concert 3 other times, and he always plays this song.

This song was in the soundtrack to the 1992 movie "Rush", and that's what you see in the video. Another beautiful song by Eric is "Wonderful Tonight". It was written for his wife, and the lyrics contain much of what every woman wants to hear from their husband on a date night. In the official video, there's also an excellent solo by one of the background singers, Katie Kissoon. Eric Clapton has a long solo career, and was in several monster rock bands, including The Yardbirds and Cream in the 60's, and Derek and the Dominos in the early 70's. That band's song "Layla" is thought of as an all-time epic rock song like Stairway To Heaven. The 3-piece supergroup Cream had many hits too, like Sunshine of Your Love, White Room, Crossroads, Strange Brew, Badge, and I Feel Free. His solo work has many great songs too, like After Midnight, Forever Man, Change The World, Cocaine, Lay Down Sally, and I Shot The Sheriff. It's a decades long rabbit hole with Eric.

As a man I don't like to admit it, but some songs just make me want to cry. This is one of those songs, I fight it but I do feel my eyes become watery.
Honestly nothing wrong with emotion and a few tears. The man is singing about gis young son he lost who he hopes to see again in heaven. It's heartbreaking. Anyone who has lost someone can feel a part of what he is feeling. The hope to see our loved ones again. It's beautiful and heartrenching.
Your reaction was very respectful . Especially what you said about other people who had to go through heavy experiences like that. So Eric left a song that can give a little comfort to them.

Where "normal" people are often at a loss for words, a musician has the opportunity to speak through his instrument. Even without these beautiful lyrics, everyone would be touched by this song.

I think it tore through every Clapton fan at the time and it brought me to tears the minute I saw which song of Eric you are listening and reacting to... It means to me that you have soul.. And I think of my 10 year old son sleeping in his room next door... How we as a couple battled to fall pregnant, the many babies we lost, the pain, then Eric's loss of his child... R rntually 18 years later we were blessed with the most beautiful boy... And this song resonates with me every time my boy reaches out for my hand.. With the most unreserved love and confidence.... and the words of this song... Way back when I sang this song wondering if I will ever hold a sons' hand.... To now doing exactly that... And how people take it for granted.... And I think of Eric and his son....
Before the accident Eric had scheduled a studio session with Kate Bush to play guitar on her song "And So Is Love" (from her album The Red Shoes). Despite the accident several months earlier, he kept the date. It was his first time playing since his son Conner's tragic death. Kate said she had tried to get Eric to postpone the recording session so he could have more time to grieve, but he told her no, that playing was the only way he could cope with the tragedy. It's a very emotional song to begin with, and Eric's solo really brings out his feelings.
Before going solo, Eric was associated with some of the greatest bands in rock history. He first came to national prominence (in the UK) as lead guitarist for The Yardbirds (a band which also served as a training/proving ground for guitarists Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page, yes that Jimmy Page). Eric then joined John Mayall's Bluesbreakers for the classic "Beano" album. He then formed the psychedelic power trio, Cream, with Ginger Baker & Jack Bruce. Over the course of 4 albums in just under 3 years, Cream changed the rock landscape. (I would highly recommend reactions to "White Room," "Sunshine of Your Love," and "Deserted Cities of the Heart," for starters.) Eric then formed the short-lived supergroup Blind Faith with Steve Winwood. (I think you would love "Can't Find My Way Home"). After one BF album, Eric joined Delaney & Bonnie & Friends, essentially as a journeyman guitarist. He then formed Derek & the Dominoes, with whom he recorded the staggering "Layla" album. THEN he went solo. Whew!
Not to mention he played the iconic solo on the Beatles song While My Guitar Gently Weeps and speaking of Fab 4 there was a short period when George left the band and John asked Eric if he wanted to replace him. Eric was unsure what to do on one hand George was his friend and he didn't wanna ruin their friendship. On the other hand he was i guess somewhat thrilled about the idea of becoming a Beatle! Well as we all know that never happened and George eventually came back.
Love your reactions! Eric is a legend. This is very different to most of his music. He's one the best blues guitarist ever! It's healthy to let our feelings flow and be released. Crying can help reduce pain and promote a sense of well-being.

This man has set the guitar bar so high from The Yardbirds ,Cream ,Derek and The Dominoes ,and an incredible solo career for one moment to make that all null and still write this for his boy is heart wrenching
I had to giggle when you referred to Eric Clapton as a new guy. He has been with us since around 1963 and is usually ranked in the top five greatest rock n roll guitarists by Rolling Stone. He has performed with a bevy of the top stars. Songs I would recommend would be "Crossroads" Live on the Goodbye Cream album, next I would recommend "Can't Find My Way Home" from the Blind Faith album., The song "Layla" is a good choice that includes Duane Allman. There is so much to mine in Clapton's catalog. You could spend weeks there.
Your reaction was very heartfelt. I remember hearing about his son. I couldn’t fathom how painful that must have been. Another rock legend who lost a young son was Robert Plant. His 5 year old son died from a stomach virus in 1977 while Robert was touring with Led Zeppelin in the U.S.

He goes back to the early 1960s and the band The Yardbirds, most famously in the bands Cream, Blind Faith, Derek and the Dominoes and has collaborated with many others. More suggestions with go from bluesy hard rock to ballads. The songs Layla, Sunshine of Your Love, White Room, and Wonderful Tonight are good ones.

The film is based on a true story of two undercover narcotics agents in Texas in the 1970s.
Becoming known in the mid 60's as the guitarist in first the Yardbirds, then John Mayall's Bluesbreakers , and then in the supergroup Cream, he was known as one of the best and most influential rock guitarists. Then, after the groups Blind Faith, and Derek And The Dominos, he began his long solo career in the 70's. For a representation of what he was once known for, try Cream's live version of "Crossroads" from the 1968 Cream album Wheels of Fire. The movie clips are from the movie Rush, for which Eric wrote the soundtrack.
A brilliant guitarist with a fantastic voice. Clapton is good friends with Mark Knopfler, lead singer and guitarist of Dire Straits. I'd really suggest you checking them out; their songs "Sultans of Swing", "Telegraph Road", "Tunnel of Love", and "Brothers in Arms" are all masterpieces, but they have many more hits.

Stacey, Since you love Led Zeppelin and Robert Plant so much, Robert also wrote a song about loosing his son Karac at age 5 in the middle of a concert tour that he had to cancel.

I'm 57 and I've already heard these songs that you've been listening to, hundreds of times, but I really enjoy watching your reactions and hearing your commentary thru fresh ears. I'm so glad that a young person like you is listening to songs from the 60's thru the 80's.........when music was real and it meant something. It was also the best time for the actual music too, not just the lyrics. My favorite decade is the 1970's. I've heard this song by Eric countless times and when I watched and listened to this video with you, I got teary eyed because I was listening to this song for the first time with you. When this song came out, it was more associated with the movie Rush, which you see clips of in the music video. At the time unless they were a classic rock fan, people didn't even know who Eric Clapton was. At the time, so many people my age were into new wave music. Iremember hearing the news about his son and people were asking who is Eric Clapton. Two songs by Claption you should definitely hear are "Layla" and "Wonderful Tonight" from Derek And The Dominoes. It's amazing that in the 80s when I went to Korea while I was in high school people in South Korea knew Wonderful Tonight but no one I knew in America knew the song.

Your humanity is showing in your emotional response to the song, I still remember going to work that day in Manhattan walking by that building where everybody was gathering up bringing candles and flowers and cards and crying. And I looking up to the 53rd floor in disbelieve.
Many years ago, I found my two year old daughter at the bottom of my swimming pool and I jumped in and pulled her out. Luckily, she coughed up the water in her lungs and today she is happily married and has given me two beautiful grand daughters. But what that taught me was to appreciate the time we have with our children and this song is all about the four short years Eric had with his. That could so easily have been me if I was one minute later in going to see where she was. A beautiful song from one of my favourite artists of all time. As a fellow vocalist, I consider Eric Clapton to be one of my all time biggest influencers in my 50 years on stage singing blues and blues/rock.

It's an extraordinary song! The instrumentation is fantastic. Lenny Castro's subtle percussion sounds and Nathan East's bending notes on his fretless bass...a perfect musical picture.
This isn't the only song about Conor. Eric's best friend Phil Collins wrote, along with Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford (all three from the band Genesis), a song called Since I Lost You. After it was recorded and mixed, he played it to Eric to get his approval. And he loved it, so the band included it on their album We Can't Dance.

Makes me cry too every time I hear this. Yesterday our 18 year old male Siamese cat Theo died. Although the euthanasian process was painless involving sedation first, I can't help but wonder if he knew what was happening. He was so weak and it was so sad because he refused to eat and all the water in the world isn't enough to sustain life by itself. I think he knew the end was coming and accepted it before we decided to take action to end his suffering. He was a very good cat and part of our family for all those years. I'm in no way equating this to losing a child or family member but it hurts just the same. This was our 3rd cat since being married 36 years. You build a lifelong bond with each one and that doesn't go away ever.

The context behind this song. ,Such an emotional outpouring he gives. They used this song in a movie (Rush), the director initially did not want to use it because it was just too emotional. but Eric really wanted them to use it. I feel the video clips from the movie actually distract a bit... and maybe that is a good thing, it would be such a raw listen.

The Rush soundtrack is woefully underrated. There's another Clapton song on there, "Help Me Up," that obliquely addresses the same feelings of loss, but is more upbeat. I think it's worth hearing.

BB King, Albert Collins, Stevie Ray Vaughn & so many more. In fact, at Vaugh's final concert, SRV was at the peak of his performance (you MUST check him out as well) Clapton, off stage was next and he asked Albert King (another Blues Legend) How am I supposed to follow that?? SRV was headed to another show, Clapton gave up his seat on a helicopter to him. A few minutes later the helicopter and his friend & the Greatest Guitar player ever were gone along with everyone else in the helicopter when it crashed. This is a massive rabbit hole to dive into Clapton's career now spans over 60 years.

Eric Clapton is a living legend icon. He showed up on the scene with the iconic legendary band cream in the '60s legendary band Yardbirds with Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin. Eric and the dominos. Legend icon solo career. You should really dive deeper down the rabbit hole of Eric Clapton. And he's also in the top 10 greatest guitars in the world.
You can never go wrong with Eric Clapton. One of the all time great singer/songwriter guitarists. In addition to his solo efforts, years with the bands the Yardbirds and Cream, he also played lead guitar on the classic Beatles George Harrison track 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps', as well as appearing in the Who's rock opera/movie 'Tommy' where he performed 'Eyesight to the Blind.' You should definitely check those out as well.

I lost my dad to Covid in 2020 and I’ve missed him every day. I’m sitting here at my desk at work watching your reaction and thinking about my dad and i have tears rolling down my face. My dad discovered my older brother not breathing one night in his crib. apparently he suffered a SIDS. My brother was 3 months old. I still wasn't even born back then but I can feel my dad's pain through this song. Even now he still tears up a little whenever listening to this song.
Around 1965 or 1966 on a London wall you could read "Clapton is god", which referred to his blues guitar playing during that time period. Only later he became the great singer and songwriter you can hear here. Still active today, so more than 50 years of a great career with lots of success, but pain and heartbreak too. Eric Clapton & Friends in Concert has what I feel is the best live performance, and that's saying TONS. I'm a massive... massive fan of Pink Floyd's Pulse concert, but nothing threatens to unseat Clapton's concert. 3 of the songs in particular. His guitar, voice, and the others in his band... speechless stuff!! Highly recommend this, and there are tragically few reactions to it, whereas I've watched dozens of Pulse reactions (and all are gold, by the way).

the movie playing in the background of this video is an absolute emotional rollercoaster as well. to me, it fits the song more so than the other way around.

I don't see how Eric gets through singing this song. I was at work when I heard on the radio that Eric's son had died and how he died. I just started crying. I had a 3 year old son at the time. I started thinking if that happened to my young boy. What an amazing tune written for his young son...
Eric Clapton definitely has some great songs, but this one is probably my favorite because of how anyone can truly relate to it, as you mentioned. Another similar song is Drowning, by Chris Young.
Eric had such a varied career, some dark moments, sadness, life long friends with George Harrison, listen to the tribute he and many musicians did in concert for George, Geoff Lynn, Billy Preston, Tom Petty, George’s son Danni and many more, ‘Something’ is such fabulous tribute.

Just to chime in with the others, during the late 60"s and 70's, one of the most turbulent times not only in music but in world history, Eric Clapton always seemed to be a part of it, or have been there when it happened, or was friends with someone in the news...he was just always That Guy. One of the pivotal figures of popular music during those years.
