This song is a little like the story of my husband and I. We were 10 when we met, he proposed when we were 12, I said yes. When I was 14 I got sick by the time my dad took me to the dr walking pneumonia had turned to double pneumonia, my organs were starting to fail, both lungs had collapsed and the dr told my dad if he had waited another 6 hours I would have died. My dad took me home carried me to my room and put me in bed, he told my mom the dr didn’t think I was going to make it, I had to go to the dr 3 times a day for a week, my dad took me to every appointment, one day I heard someone crying outside my bedroom window, it was my future husband, it took me 6 months to recover, we just celebrated our 45th wedding anniversary. My Dr, my dad and my husband kept me from dying.

I never say goodbye it is see you later. love to you both and God bless you. Mel and Shawn you have brought comfort and love to me and i want to tell you how much you have meant to me. Take care see you later. Awesome reaction.

There were quite a few songs in the 70's about death and dying young. It was a theme of many movies too. They really made you think. A couple of these that come to mind are "Time in a Bottle" by Jim Croce, a beautiful beautiful song, but very sad. "Daniel" by Elton John. "One Tin Solider" forgot the name of the group but it was a super big hit in the early 70's from the movie" Billy Jack."

I loved this when it came out in 1974 and having since lost two wives, both to illness, the first aged just 32 (together 17 years); and the second nearly 4 years ago, aged 67 (together 24 years), this song certainly is so very poignant in my life. Yet, with both of them, I have great children and other friends and relations who have been there for me when I needed them most - missing both still hurts like hell though
Great reaction guys. There's a line in one particular song I'm gonna want on either the order of service, or my gravestone (or maybe both) when the time comes (hoping I've got many years left yet btw) - and that is from the beautiful: Life Is A Long Song by Jethro Tull.
The line? - Life's a long song, but the tune ends too soon for us all
Maybe try a reaction to it, please (studio single version)

This song was one my grandmother could never stand to hear. It came out about the time my uncle died. He was 11 days short of being 21 years old and his daughter was 11 days old. This song described him perfectly, the animosity between him and his dad, the fact that he was the "black sheep" of the family, but the part about "Goodbye Michelle, my little one" just broke my grandma's heart. Still brings a lump to my throat every time I hear it.

It's good that a bit after the songs play you often go back and restart it from the beginning. For those familiar with a song they like to hear that with your initial analysis. For those new to a song it allows them a much better opportunity to look into what the song is or is about.

This translation is a saccharine sweet translation from the original. Michelle, is his wife who he hints has been having affairs behind his back. 'Papa' in the original French is 'Father' as in the Catholic Priest who has been taking more than a professional interest in his wife, and the life long friend in the first verse cannot (/has not) wait to replace him in the marriage bed. - Therefore, as written 'Le Moribond' is a dying man's ode to betrayal.

I've watched a few of your reactions, you react together, not as one, but in connection with each other.
It' so good to see. Keep reacting and keep together. Love is great but it is empty without care and respect for each other. Stay well, respect from Down Under.

Good analysis of the meaning of the song, as well as understanding the juxtapositions of joy & sadness that the song embodies.

This was one of my mom's favorite songs cuase it made her happy even though it's about loss. It shows the positive side which it all the memories and experiences that were shared. She was diabetic and beat lung cancer but the chemo compromised her immune system and gang green took her when she was recovering from surgery. I made a special hard rock/psychedelic version just for her and played it at the funeral. Made me smile see you two get the same joy out of the song I do.

Terry was playing golf with his friend when his friend told him he only had a few months left to live. This is the song that came from that friendship.

The way their facial expressions change when Terry Jacks first mentions dying is why this song still resonates almost 50 years later. It sounds happy until the reality of death is introduced. After that, the sobering reality of saying your final goodbye to your loved ones is juxtaposed against an upbeat melody and beautiful chorus.

The original version of this song - called “Le Moribond” (translated “The Dying Man”) and sung in French - was based on the tale of an old man dying of heartache due to his wife cheating on him with his best friend.

An alcoholics ode to his family as he realizes his coming death. The many unlisten to messages given by his father. The joy he had with his siblings when he was but a child. And a sad goodbye to his younger sister who stood by him and always gave him a lift and a smile. A confession of a life that has gone awry due to self-infliction. Sad and and beautiful.
