Dick Grayson in my eyes is the best Robin. The idea of Dick Grayson witnessing his parents die right in front of him due to the corruption and apathy of a too far deep within the pits of hell, must and is a devasting event to witness, and a traumatic experience that no child should ever have been scarred with. As such Dick was fortunate to have a glimmer of hope in the bleak and dark world he was forced to come to terms with, that hope was a man who understood Dick's pain and instead of leaving that child with no hope and no family, Bruce chose to do something he hasn't been able to do in a long time... and that's to care, to raise, to teach, to love an innocent child that still had the chance to view the world as not such a bad place. To also be the father that Bruce lost so that this child can grow to become a man with a good heart and a noble moral compass, but not only to be good... but to be better than Bruce could ever be. Dick Grayson growing to be his own hero and the leader of a team of young superheroes is a sign that Bruce did his job and gave a child a better life. Not only that but as such he began a catalyst, sparking a match in the youthful eyes of Gotham, showing that despite the rapid siege of crime that plagues the street can be easy and grant you what you desire... there still will be a better way and a better route you can take. You may not be able to go around in spandex and fight criminals and murders, but you can still be a person who doesn't view the world where your only path is through crime, racketeering, corruption, but through the helping and protection of others. @@hereticdeth7986 That's not far off (especially for Wally West) but Nightwing is the *closest* in DC to Spider-Man. Street level hero, everyone likes them, really charismatic and funny, super acrobatic, etc.
@@navonmyhand7999 Static is more like the Spider-Man of DC. I'd agree with you if someone didn't bring this up to me since Dwayne Mcduffie based him on the webhead back in 1993.
@Will N Which is pretty much canon, though. Dick is aware of what Batman is and he has first hand experience of Bruce's shortcomings BUT Dick is also moulded by Batman's methods and so, he inevitably leans back into those methods. Dick's angst is that - nature vs nurture and he is at his best when Bruce's teachings combine with Dick's idealistic nature. That is when we get the best Dick Grayson stories.
What I think encapsulates Dick's character is how he got the name Nightwing. That story is a simple one, but a good moment for Dick and Superman. Dick had quit being Robin and was guiding the Titans at that moment, but he still wanted to be in the fight. seeing as he wasn't on speaking terms with Bruce, Dick, went to speak with Superman. Superman tells him the story of the hero of krypton, who had the name Nightwing. In turn, when the story Judas Contract came, and Dick first becomes Nightwing, it is as if a new light has shone on the former Robin. What I mean with this story is that Dick is equal to Bruce in many ways, but his character has a light that rivals superman. He is a kinder batman, a darker superman, a good man fighting in the dark, hoping to shine a light to others. Dick is the compassion of the Bat family and a character that thankfully came back to the comics (We will never speak of the Ric incident again).
@@francescocostanzo8225 For the comics were he speaks with super man look for Nightwing: secret files and origins #1 and Nightwing: year one. For the Ric Grayson run (although I don't recommend it at all), it starts with nightwing (2016) issue #50 and ends on issue #76.
@@Sensei.Of.Kivotos HIS NAME'S NOT RIC! Now that I got that reference out of my system, Nightwing was shot in the head by KGBeast during Tom King's Batman run, which caused him to lose his memories of his life after his parents died, get a buzz cut, and call himself Ric Grayson, who's basically Dick Grayson if he were an edgy boi. We don't speak of Ric.
Dick is my favorite comic book character of all time. He has all the trauma of Batman, yet refuses to fall into that darkness. He uses it to fuel his fight to overcome his adoptive father's toxic behavior and patterns. He wants to leave legacy of light and pure heroics, that's why he spends so much time with the youth. He's not the smartest (that's Tim), or the most outright skilled (arguably Damian). But no one would ever question that he's the only Robin to fully outgrow that mantle and become a hero in his own right. Equal and in many ways superior to Bruce. Nightwing is kinda like DC's Spiderman. Incorruptible, friendly, everyone knows him, he's a part of every team in some capacity, and if he died the entire hero world would stop to mourn him. I would kill to get a comic book accurate tv series on him in the vein of Daredevil! One half detective, one half hero. It would be awesome!

I’m not the biggest Tim drake fan but he was perfect for the robin role. This may be unpopular but I actually love Damion now as robin the dynamic and madness that boy has but I think they have mostly done an amazing job basically taking what if Bruce was Ras child or grandchild trained for years and slowly reclaiming his humanity and seeing him grow Though out of the Batman fam and entire dcu dick is the ideal hero

Dick feels like a protagonist of a shonen manga slotted *perfectly* into an existing series. He shines bright in the dingy, pitch-black environment of Gotham and Bludhaven. I'm tempted to call him my favorite DC character, period. Even greater than Bruce, himself. Their relationship is really what makes it work. It's hard to choose, you know, with them being the Dynamic Duo and all.
Dick had everything batman did not: a loving heart, compassion, relatability, and above all he was a true hero. Nightwing wasn't motivated to stopping evil because his parents were killed or because that was his mentors will; no, he was Nightwing because he wanted to be a hero, a hero better than the Batman, and because of that selfless hero quality, he is the better hero. Nightwing didn't need to be Batmans equal, he was already better than him
Better than batman?😂😂😂 You don't even know who the batman is, the lasso of truth would tell you who batman is. If dick goes independent, then you would see he would become worst than batman.
@@ronaldhonore3454 Dick is independent and he is better than batman. That is canon. However Dick Grayson is everything he is. He is the hero he is because of Batman/Bruce.
@Caleb Irizarry yeah it’s not that he doesn’t care about them he just doesn’t show it when there in combat due to enemies finding a way to use it to there advantage and at home he shows them the attention they need
It makes sense that Dick turned out healthier that Bruce. Bruce has no parents but to Dick, Bruce is his father, he has a source of emotional support and guidance and even other family in the form of the bat family and the Titans. Batman was alone too long meanwhile Dick never really was.
It's true, and Bruce only started to fully open up to other heroes after taking Dick in. If it wasn't for him Bruce would probably have been alone for hell of a lot longer. Dick had the support of Superman and other JL heroes as well growing up.
In fact Bruce has also a father. But due to his upbringing he'll never see Alfred as such. Well, he does but the "buttler" part is too strong in his mind.
Imma cry. Thank you. It feels like lately there’s been this move to strip everything about Dick away from him. From the retcon of his deep and strong relationship with Tim and even connection to Jason, to the mishandling of his amnesia arc. Even on tv theres this push to make him more dark and gritty when that’s the opposite of what dick Grayson is. The animated media has probably presented him the best of all but even then the light is rarely shone on him. The fact that he is a linchpin in the dc universe, with how well acquainted he was with almost everyone and particularly the big leagues, is being more and more forgotten. He is the metaphorical first child to really step in and make a presence in the dc hero world and with it comes the particular closeness he has with everyone he meets. Whether they see him as a niece/nephew/brother. The injustice series was probably the last time it was really exhibited, with his death being a dark omen. That if dick Grayson can die and everyone keeps fighting than the future really is doomed. I loved this. Thank you for making it!
Honestly, there probably wouldn’t be side kicks in comics. He was the first. And his popularity urged others to copy him (Bucky Barnes and Wonder Girl).
Red hood is still my favorite of the Batman kids but Dick is still the person I recognize the most as the best growth as a side kick to independent hero. I also think be can become the best Batman of the robins. I think the reason I like Jason so much is his comparison to Dick. Jason can never be Batman, but he took the mantle of Red hood and made it his.
@@nothingherezero7182 It is true in a way. Depends on failure and success. If Dick is a success story, then so should Jason not because of the way he handles his business, but because of his ideals being his and his alone. He too, just like Nightwing, doesn’t want to be like Batman.
I feel like Alfred and Dick(adult) are the only ones who can tell Bruce to lay off another robin or something like give him advice he might actually listen to
Dick Grayson is truly Batman's greatest success because in Young Justice I remember Batman telling Diana that he took Dick in just so that he doesn't become like Bruce in his persuit for vengeance for his family's death and as far as I'm concerned he succeeded with flying colours, Nightwing is everything Batman couldn't be he's a true leader, he plays well with everyone, he shows actual compassion and kindness towards everyone (Bruce also is compassionate but he's unable to show it like Dick) and he's found peace with his existence overcoming the grief his parent's death gave him which Bruce still hasn't (he still blames himself for his parents death). The genius of all this is Batman and Nightwings stories are eerily similar yet Nightwing has completely filled in the void and redeemed his character flaws that Batman to this day hasn't been able to do and If I'm not wrong I think Bruce totally acknowledge this as well that Nightwing has far surpassed Batman
Batman: Robin needed to help bring the man who murdered his family to justice. Wonder Woman: So that he could turn out like you? Batman: ....So that he wouldn’t! Damn best line to represent Bruce and Dick’s relationship💯🔥

"Be strong enough to be gentle." - Peter Cullen (advice from his brother Larry Cullen before taking on the role of Optimus Prime) If that doesn't describe Dick Grayson I don't know what does.
When I first saw Dick Grayson robin he became me the big brother that I to be for my brother and my friends who need help. He show so much compassion to his friends and family he make me feel hope
The Dick-Bruce dynamic and relationship is central to several of my favourite interpretations of Batman's character. Obviously Dick is a great character in his own right, but I also think what he brings out in Bruce can (and, imo, should) be extremely meaningful and insightful when portrayed correctly. I hate it when Batman is just portrayed as this angsty robot who hates/dgaf about everyone rather than a man who has very deeply felt emotions that he struggles to express or even understand. I think interactions between him and Dick really draw out those emotions in illuminating ways. I also think that, as Bruce's first son, he kind of helped heal a little of Bruce's trauma by giving him a family again.
Dick Grayson, "Robin", was created to bring light to Batman's darkness and be a character youngster's could identify with. He is the greatest Robin and more Bruce's son than Damien could ever be. Dick, is the crime fighter Bruce wishes he could be because he knows unlike himself , Dick is still the same person he was before seeing his parents murdered and has not been permanently emotionally damaged by their death's.
Definitely one of my favorite DC characters. I kind of like the headcanon that Bruce intentionally made Dick resent him in order to make him better than himself. That he let himself become a cautionary tale for him, even if it meant losing his son.
God this hurts seeing how good everything use to be compared to how DC just keeps making characters regress or just straight up write them out stories for little over a year. Amazing video once again, the effort and love you put into this was a nice change of pace from most Batman based videos. Can't wait to see more! 😁
This comment hit me hard. Dick's regression as a character to the point where he barely even counts as a superhero anymore over the last decade has been so painful to watch.
@@JayPG95 Yeah it's not even just him either. Like they brought back Wally West and all he has been for last like 3 years is just a punching bag and is basically not even considered a full on hero anymore. @@nightynight1479 A lot of that has to do with some editors HATING the sidekicks getting more popular than their mentors with younger readers. DiDio has apparently hated Nightwing for years and has wanted to kill him off since before Infinite Crisis. When they revealed his identity in Forever Evil and he became Agent Grayson, that was an attempt to destroy the character and it backfired because a) Nightwing fans are stubborn as fuck (thank God) and b) they put a good writer on that book and they did a great job at giving us good Nightwing stories without Dick being Nightwing. DC editors and higher ups need to let go of nostalgia and move forward. Rebirth was supposed to be a combination of nostalgia and moving forward, but that didn’t last long.

I remember there being articles of King explaining what he was going to do before the story was published, and it had nothing to do with some dumb murder mystery. It was gonna be a miniseries about superheroes in therapy. Editorial told him to turn it into a murder mystery and he just played ball.
My favorite version of Dick Grayson was from animated Teen Titans, not only this Dick Grayson was more of a Borderline Metahuman than even other Dick Graysons
Well dick is a boardeline mehuman, breed by the court to be the perfect talon, trained by the best, and the fact martial arts on DC is a lowkey superpower.
Dick Grayson is easily my favorite Robin. He's the perfect balance of Bruce and Clark. He understands Bruce the most and at times proves Bruce can be wrong.
The only Robin joker hates completely ,cause he was the only who wasn't broken either physically or mentally by Joker. Such was his strengths . He learnt coming out of trauma ,which Bruce , Tim and Jason couldn't . He channeled the care he got from Bruce through his entire life. The greatest success
Fantastic analysis. You described Dick Grayson perfectly. He is the light in the bat family, the big brother every goes to for advice and the kind leader who always looks out for his team.
There’s a line from one of the comics where Dick has become Batman, don’t remember who says it, but it’s something to affect of “to Bruce the mission of Batman is a crusade, an obsession, but to Dick that mission is an adventure” And I love that distinction
As much as I like Batman, he’s got nothing on Grayson lol. I really love the fact that unlike Bruce, who continuously mourns his parents death by being the Batman, Dick celebrates his parents life by being a hero. No matter how much trauma he’s put through or whether he’s Robin, Nightwing, Batman, or a super spy, he’s always out to make the best of things.

As well as the concepts/questions they help bring to thought. Keep doing the great work that you do, it's always appreciated.
Nail on the head. As you said, it's telling that his greatest ability is to connect with others and that they trust him; he's lead the Titans, the Bat family, and even the Justice League.
People assume Dick only knows what Batman taught him, but he also lived 24/7 with the Teen Titans for years. He learned from the protégés of the best heroes ever plus Starfire, Raven, Cyborg, and Beast Boy. All that includes Themysciran, Atlantean, Tamaranean, Checkmate combat skills/tactics, mystic knowledge from Raven, tech stuff from Cyborg, and all kinds of first hand experience sparring with all manner of superpowered opponents. He might be even more experienced fighting supers than Batman. His development with the Titans cannot be understated, which is why wiping them in the New 52 was one of the biggest character nerfs ever.
I wish Young Justice showed us the reactions of the Justice League after Batman says that line, "So that he wouldn't." It adds complexity to the relationship.
One time in comics Dick Grayson said to Batman that he would definitely be a member of justice league when he grows up and to this Batman said You will not only be the member you will lead the Justice league Thats the confidence Batman harbour for Dick Grayson
I think when it comes to the bat family BATMAN made a horrible mistake. He forgot that people, especially his squires, are individuals. He adopted Grayson and his naturally charismatic and enthusiastic demeanor made his training, schooling, and temperament easy for Bruce to work with. After Dick was all grown up, Bruce thought “hey that was easy, lets do it again” and he adopted the far more troublesome, temperamental, stubborn, and egotistical Jason Todd. Who would prove to be far more of a challenge that Dick ever was. While Bruce could take Dick to all their functions (masked and unmasked like balls, and parties) and Dick would act mature and charismatic, Jason was a problem child, in one issue I believe he gets caught smoking and almost burns down Wayne manor. However I don’t think its any surprise that Todd mostly happened when Dick was distancing himself from the Bat, and therefore Jason got to spend the least amount of time with the confident, protective, and charismatic Dick Grayson. Eventually leading to Jasons “death” at the hands of the joker. Next came Tim and Damian who both got to spend alot of time with Dick and its no doubt they turned out better but still not as well as dick. Simply i think it comes down to this, Dick Grayson got Bruce at his best, he got a Bruce who was as eager to teach Grayson as Grayson was to learn. Bruce never had an apprentice before and was willing to learn. But by the time of Jason he thought he knew everything, and failed, leading to his failure in Tim and Damian, both looking up to Dick more than Bruce.
I think because Dick caught Tony Zucco for the murder of his parents early in his career as Robin his crime fighting career didn't become the obsessive life of vengeance Bruce's did. His sense of humour probably helps him deal with what he goes through night after night much like Spider-Man.
Finally happy to see someone give nightwing his flowers. Out of everyone I’m the family his relationships with Damien and Bruce are the most interesting to watch
Grayson has a way of earning the loyalty and friendship of others. He is at his best when in a team, while Batman excels alone. Grayson serves as a foil to Batman. Bonds Vs Solitude
06:18 That to me is the essence of a hero to do the right thing even when its hard even when it hurts but the difference between Dick and most other heroes is that even with that Dick never stops with his empathy for others. Its a compassion that resonates so well and that I corny as it is try to use in my life compassion to all you come across.
Dick really had to take the full brunt of batman. Thats actually nuts. Every other robin obviously had their own hardships, but every other robin at least had him.
This is why Dick Grayson a.k.a. Nightwing are on of my favourites from the Bat family. Of course we all liked Batman but Dick is something different, his characteristics defines him.
Looking at the two major robins (Dick and Jason) we can truly see What the best and worse batman is. Dick: the skills and brains of batman with the heart of superman. Jason: Everything batman with the will of Deathstroke but more unhinged.
Dick Grayson is essentially a younger Bruce that's not an asshole and has a sense of humor. I wanna say he's the only hero in DC who literally gets along with every other hero.
I just wanna say I love these video essays you do on these characters. Delving deep into their backstory and their psyche, these aren't just normal videos they are great essays worthy of a A+ in any English class. Just wanted to comment this and say keep up on the great work. Love the editing too :)
Yeahhh baby the greatest robin (Btw can you do Cassandra Cain she is my second favorite member of the Batfamily) Also my boy got a sponsorship let’s GOOOOOO
As many have already pointed out Dick is the perfect combination of Superman and Batman, and in a way superior to both. While Batman roams the streets fighting thugs with his broody nature, Superman fights the big fights, usually out of touch from a majority of the general public Dick brings that light of hope from Superman to street level, giving compassion to even his enemies and becomes a man of his own
I think the moment that perfectly proves your notion that "Dick is everything Bruce is not" is in the Batman Animated Series. Its when Dick had been Robin for a while now. During a mission, Batman interrogates a criminal in front of his family. Robin is obviously not in support of what is happening. He tries to stop Bruce but then he snaps and leaves. He later quits and becomes Nighwing. Like you said unlike Bruce, Dick has a warm heart.

Which comic is this so I can read it?

We don't speak of Ric.
@@smashmaster521 LMAOO Ric is essentially a horrible fanfic character 😭 Not my Grayson

It makes sense that Dick turned out healthier that Bruce. Bruce has no parents but to Dick, Bruce is his father, he has a source of emotional support and guidance and even other family in the form of the bat family and the Titans. Batman was alone too long meanwhile Dick never really was.
Bruce had Alfred
@@theov5212 I mean there's only so much Alfred could do for him given he doesn't have similar experiences, plus Dick has both Bruce and Alfred.
Alfred: am i a joke to you?
Imma cry.
The first of anything always hits different. Without Dick, their wouldn’t be robins.
I think Sage's Rain also did a video on Jason Todd. It was about how the mercenary was able to convert failure into a badge of honor.

In season 3 of Young Justice Batman said to Dick: Nightwing You comand more respect than You think.
i feel nightwing is truly a heor compared to bats, who's more of a vigilante. i dont think he has ever called or treated himself as a hero.
Batman: Robin needed to help bring the man who murdered his family to justice.

Dick Grayson, to me, is my favourite member of the Bat-Family. The idea of Dick Grayson witnessing his parents die right in front of him due to the corruption and apathy of a too far deep within the pits of hell must and is a devasting event to witness and a traumatic experience that no child should ever have been scarred with. As such, Dick was fortunate to have a glimmer of hope in the bleak and dark world he was forced to come to terms with, that hope was a man who understood Dick's pain, and instead of leaving that child with no hope and no family, Bruce chose to do something he hasn't been able to do in a long time... and that's to care, to raise, to teach, to love an innocent child that still had the chance to view the world as not such a bad place. To also be the father that Bruce lost so that this child can grow to become a man with a good heart and a noble moral compass, not only to be good... but to be better than Bruce could ever be.
Dick Grayson growing to be his own hero and the leader of a team of young superheroes is a sign that Bruce did his job and gave a child a better life. Not only that but as such, he began a catalyst, sparking a match in the youthful eyes of Gotham, showing that despite the rapid siege of crime that plagues the street, it can be easy and grant you what you desire... there will still be a better way and route you can take. You may not be able to go around in spandex and fight criminals and murderers, but you can still be a person who doesn't view the world where your only path is through crime, racketeering, and corruption but through the helping and protection of others. To me, that's what Robin represents and what Dick Grayson as Robin started as well.

Tim- Went solo because Bruce was missing
Jason- Became criminal
Damien- Angry Teen
Dick Grayson- Kept his cool tries his best to do right
I think when you know yourself and who you are, you have the strength to do anything
At least Damians had character development

The first teen titans? He was a mix of Dick Tim and an entirely new character IMO. Not really a good adaption of Dick but definitely a cool version
Grayson is my favorite comic book character ever and damn this video gave me chills all over. Thank you for making this video.
There’s a line from one of the comics where Dick has become Batman, don’t remember who says it, but it’s something to affect of “to Bruce the mission of Batman is a crusade, an obsession, but to Dick that mission is an adventure”
And I love that distinction
As much as I like Batman, he’s got nothing on Grayson lol. I really love the fact that unlike Bruce, who continuously mourns his parents death by being the Batman, Dick celebrates his parents life by being a hero. No matter how much trauma he’s put through or whether he’s Robin, Nightwing, Batman, or a super spy, he’s always out to make the best of things.

On my block:"does batman REALLY need Robin?"
Sage's Rain: Yes
Nail on the head. As you said, it's telling that his greatest ability is to connect with others and that they trust him; he's lead the Titans, the Bat family, and even the Justice League.
Nightwing is my favorite superhero. I grew up with him and related to him a lot. This character got me through a lot.
The true son of batman!!! And cuddly big bro grayson to dami
Right!!!
I feel like each Robin has a different attributes that makes up Batman
He's not the boy scout like superman. He's not the dark knight like Bruce. He's the strongest of both ideals. The gray son of Gotham.
It's so cool how characters are created for certain purposes but then develop into totally different roles as the comic progresses!
One time in comics Dick Grayson said to Batman that he would definitely be a member of justice league when he grows up and to this Batman said You will not only be the member you will lead the Justice league
Thats the confidence Batman harbour for Dick Grayson
Dick will always be my favorite, he has such a heart. He has taught and protected so many, been such a leader. Such a great point about trust.
Ik I’m late asf, but a video about Alfred would tie this playlist together so well.

I think there’s a reason why my two favorite comic heroes are Spidey & Nightwing
Dick truly is batman's greatest success. he is his legacy. he's ever lasting gift to the world and Morrison's Batman and Robin is a testament to that
Nightwing is the best concept to ever come out of a Batman story.
Nice way to spell red hood
Amazing vid bro, Dick Grayson is my favorite DC character.
Dick Grayson is essentially a younger Bruce that's not an asshole and has a sense of humor. I wanna say he's the only hero in DC who literally gets along with every other hero.
Easily one of my favorite DC characters and the only hero in my top 5
I just wanna say I love these video essays you do on these characters. Delving deep into their backstory and their psyche, these aren't just normal videos they are great essays worthy of a A+ in any English class. Just wanted to comment this and say keep up on the great work. Love the editing too :)
I believe that Bruce always wanted Dick to be a better person a better man than he could ever be.
Yeahhh baby the greatest robin
(Btw can you do Cassandra Cain she is my second favorite member of the Batfamily)
Also my boy got a sponsorship let’s GOOOOOO
shes not really known that much
@@royal4908 true but I still would like to see him make a video essay on her
Personally besides the Batman himself my favorite bat family member is Jason Todd (red hood) I was so happy when he made the red hood vid
But it would be cool to see a video on Alfred
@@overloadgames972 I would like to see a video essay on Alfred that would be pretty cool
As many have already pointed out Dick is the perfect combination of Superman and Batman, and in a way superior to both.
While Batman roams the streets fighting thugs with his broody nature, Superman fights the big fights, usually out of touch from a majority of the general public
Dick brings that light of hope from Superman to street level, giving compassion to even his enemies and becomes a man of his own
Dick Grayson is the reason I started watching superhero movies, still my favorite hero of all time
Thanks for talking about my favorite superhero. This was a really good character analysis, and I hope you keep up the good work
I think the moment that perfectly proves your notion that "Dick is everything Bruce is not" is in the Batman Animated Series.
Dick Grayson is also the only Bat family members with the balls to end joker in canon comics.
the fact that Dick is your favorite Robin and character too makes me so happy lol. Literally everything about him is great.
