4:41 this is exactly what happened to me with Lego Star Wars 3. Having played LSW 2 on the PSP, and knowing that was a very good port, I was really hyped when I found out that LSW 3 would have a PSP port. I was really disappointed that I actually couldn't build bases and exit ships in a mission on that version.
I actually had the experience that you described! I had the first game on PSP as a kid and got the second with the expectation it would be the same as the console version… I ended up returning it the same day haha. I have gone back to it recently however as well as the DS version and while not as good as Indy 1 or Batman for DS I think it’s a good bit of fun and interesting to contrast with the other versions : ) I do find it funny though that my least favourite aspects of the console version of Indy 2 which are the levels and character roster actually end up being the main improvements in the handheld ports! If only there was a perfect blend of the two.. Also the fact that this game shipped with only 3 tracks of music, one being a constant 47 second loop is bewildering…
Gosh yeah this port was, weird. I will say though, I got closer to beating this one than the handheld and the only reason I didn't was because some of the required to 100% minigames were a pain to control and one level glitched to start freezing on me. But I remember eventually beating that Island Hub level and being surprised at the ending. Idk WHAT I expected but it wasn't that. Edit - Didn't realize the journal entries prior to levels used console cutscene images. I always thought as a kid they were hand-drawn due to the shaders used on them. Probably helps that I just...didn't make a ton of progress with the Crystal Skull on console while portable only has Crystal Skull levels.
I'd love if you made a video on the DS port of Lego Star Wars TCS. I played that before any other lego game and I'd get even more nostalgia than I did from your Indiana Jones videos.
They also commonly have features and abilities BEFORE the console sequels later do. It hasn’t come up here yet in the videos in-depth, but these handheld ports are deceptively smartly designed.
2:53 This level on "free play" (or whatever it was called) broke me for real, I could barely understand how this game worked, and then the unlimited bad guys wouldn't let me concentrate on figuring out what to do (it might have been easier than I realized), so I quit the game and never came back to play or finish it.
@@BaneShakeNo doubt, I remember frequently shutting the sound off. The fact they only had one sound piece is ridiculous, especially with all the variety in the Indy soundtracks.
Technically as the console version ran on the wii i think it could have probably ran on psp it would have probably just took extra work and time they probably didn't want to do
Yeah, I think it plausibly could have. It DEFINITELY couldn’t have run on DS, which was the big thing limiting this port, since they decided to budget these to be the same version.
You EXACTLY described me at 4:35 when I got this game when I was young. I already had the first game and lego Batman on the PS2 and got it for the psp hoping it would be exactly like what they showed in the trailers, and instead I got this. I remember super disappointed and even hating it at first, even though I played it quite a bit. I would probably appreciate it a lot more if I replayed it today, knowing what people have said about the original console version of the game.
To be fair, I will absolutely stand by the console version too; it may be divisive, but it was significant. I'd say both versions are very worth checking out for people to judge for themselves (or re-judge, as in your case), since it seems unlikely we'll be getting any other Lego Indy content any time soon.
I actually have been chipping away at that version here and there; I’m not currently planning to cover it on my channel, but at some point I want to cover all things Staff of Kings
I had a pirated copy of the DS version, I could not get past the part where you carry a lit torch through an invisible maze, and the torch goes out if you don't get it right. I also had the original on PS3 and it was impossible to 100% because it crashed every time you picked up one specific treasure in a specific level.
Aw man, that is a bad run of luck! I have (mostly) never run into anything game breaking with these games, though there is one technical example coming up in a future video…
@@BaneShake LIJ 2 console edition is completely under rated. It was the first lego game to have open world hubs, multiple hubs, one of only 2 lego games to have the level creator, the first to have online play features etc. Personally, I loved it, except for the vehicle levels, which I find tedious and loud. Also, it has fridge car.
This was my second lego game I ever got as a kid (right after star wars the original trilogy on the wii) and I loved it, though the graphics look so much more rough than I remember lol, nostalgia I guess.
I own this on the Xbox 360 and cause its backwards compatible i can play it on my one X but man... I really struggled to get into this one. I still haven't finished it 😔 it's one of the few older lego games I've never come close to finishing the story. I played lego batman 2 recently and after coming from the og lego star wars then going to lego indie 1 and then lego lotr and Lego marvel superheroes. I really struggled with lego batman 2 cause of the open world flight controls - then hoping back to this one it was really hard to pick up - I think eventually I'll come back around and play it. But I was like oh lol nostalgia - then I played it and went oof... Maybe not so nostalgic 😢. Not that it's evidently bad but I definitely feel like the first one did a better job of capturing the essence of the films and then because you start with the worst movie in the franchise but with a lego spin + some weird top down driving bits it's kind of hard for me to go - this one is fun. To be fair I found lego harry potter 1-4 and 5-6 hard to enjoy and come back to - I have literally never finished lego harry potter 5-7 just because I really disliked the way the character unlocks were posted throughout the levels rather than within the open world or just by playing through the game itself - so to 100% complete the game it was for me a lot more tedious + wingardium leviosa was awkward to control. Definitely better in the skywalker saga but lego star wars 3 and harry potter you could tell these were their first attempts but that auto clipping was so annoying

Despite having some technical limitations, this game kept the spirit of the original more than the console release did.

Lego Indy 1 on PSP was god tier.
Only because it's literally the console version on PSP.

I got this game thinking it was gonna be just like my cousin's lego Indiana jones 2. But what I got instead will always be a cherished memory.

Criminally underrated :). Found your channel through the last Lego Indiana jones video. Liked and commented :)
Thanks for your support! I’m glad to have you back
Imagine how much more racist the Indiana Jones franchise would be if JK Rowling wrote it

I always thought this port was really lousy. The same music reused in every single level drove me absolutely insane!
Music is ABSOLUTELY the weakest part of this port.

That was me. I was exactly this kid.
So I asked for the 360 version later on.
Only problem of this version is the music in game. It is ALWAYS THE SAME ONE...
For real. I used more pieces of music for THIS VIDEO ALONE than the entire game did; one for gameplay, main theme for Menu
