Episode 13: Top 10 War Films
Dear viewers, a lot of people are still suggesting 'Lone Survivor' and 'Fury', whilst both were enjoyable flicks, 'Lone Survivor' was released 2 months after this video was made and 'Fury' was 11 months after. This list is over a year old now, so a couple months back we took to creating individual war genre lists to give it another shot at these films, so if there are films missing on this list, please view the following three as chances are high the film of your request will be on there, thank you very much!

Saving pvt Ryan is such an epic masterpiece. I'm not a very emotional person but every time I watched the scene where pvt Ryan visits the cementary I feel physical pain and cry like a rainstorm.

Really well done list, I would possibly add Letters From Iwo Jima, which gives a beautifully done look at the other side of war.
And c'mon, Apocalypse Now has to be Number 1. Able to depict all the grit and reality of life in the Vietnam War, while still making points (See French Plantation scene and Kurtz's monologues)
Ohh man Platoon was one of those iconic movies for me. I remember I was around 8 years old when I first saw it (I'm 19 now) and I sat there watching in awe. I don't know why but for me it was just absolutely captivating. I can't explain it but I just remember sitting there feeling the emotion and feelings of the characters and knowing this movie was something special and that I would love it for the rest of my time. It still holds a special place in my heart.

Black hawk down will always be my favorite. However list was well done
Saving Private Ryan and Black Hawk Down are my all-time war movies.

Saving Private Ryan was probably my favorite. Beautiful and all actors were rad. Overall though I think Fury was my favorite because the actors killed it! :)
White Tiger and Come and See are two fantastic Russian WW2 films. Where Eagles Dare, The Guns of Navarone and Heroes of Telemark are all great classics. Plus I really enjoyed: The Train (Burt Lancaster tries to stop Nazis from stealing masterpieces from the Louvre), Iron Cross (from the German perspective), Black Book (about the Dutch resistance) and Max Manus man of war (Norwegian resistance).

Some of those films , like ' The bridge of river Kwai ' are questionable , but with nr. 1 I do agree.

Twelve O'Clock High from 1949 should be Top 10 in my book..along with the 1925 silent classic Battleship Potemkin.

Saving Private Ryan and Das Boot are my favorites.
"71 into the fire".... Its kick to the neck most of the Hollywood war movies.
Enemy at the gates, The Pianist, unbroken......these are some epic war movies that should be on list!!!

"The thin red line" is the #1 for me. But I understand that people who love war movies, prefer "saving private ryan". Because TTRL teases the war, while SPR praises it.
Thin Red Line was at par with Saving Private Ryan, I love both of them, TRL has more deep thematic & philosophical aspect

My husband’s grandfather ran out of the theater and threw up in the trash can during the opening of saving private Ryan, he said it was too real and brought memories back from when he landed on Okinawa. It was the first time in many years that he had an episode of PTSD

I love all your videos. Would like to add to my humble requests a Top 10 Realistic movies based on Space. And Top 10 Ethan Hawke movies/performances. An actor who has been working for almost 30 years yet is grossly underrated.

What About "The Longest Day" - "A Bridge Too Far" - "Operation DayBreak" -"U571" - "Battle Ground"
The first capture of a naval Enigma machine with its cipher keys from a U-boat was made on 9 May 1941 by HMS Bulldog of Britain's Royal Navy. The film U571 tries to rewrite history by pretending that Americans retrieved it. I know it's ''just a film'' but people soak this stuff up and assume it's based on fact.

How in the hell do you overlook downfall?! Oh right because its in German and has subtitles and most people can't be bothered reading, downfall was a freak'n masterpiece.
the Revolution I actually speak near-fluent German after having half German ancestry... so no that's not the reason, many fantastic films missed the list, it's actually a challenge compiling a list of just 10 films out of the hundreds out there... thanks for the comment.
Downfall is up there in the top 3 an unbelievable film.
the Revolution yea the problem with that is ppl don't wanna read a movie rather than watching it.
Less of a "war" movie and more of the psychology of a caged rat movie.

I really like your list, though I felt that there were many war movies that are truly awesome. For example, the incredible film The Front Line is a Korean War movie that delves deeply into this horrific conflict. Another great movie was A Very Long Engagement, one of the best World War I movies I have ever seen.
Patton;this was a war epic that came out at the hight of the Vietnam War and was the #1 film of 1970.
and earned best actor for George c. Scott and best picture of that year.
"Cross of Iron" Sam Peckinpah. You need one from eastern front in WWII.

You should have featured The Guns Of Navaronne,the remake of All Quiet On The Western Front & Von Ryan's Express.

I agree exactly woth this list. But letters from Iwo Jima was an amazing film too.
platoon is easily my favorite, with a great soundtrack amazing performances and a great theme and story closely followed by the deer hunter and saving private ryan. I think apocalypse now is way overrated

It's difficult to have "cultural empathy" when the other culture is shooting at you. So i think Black Hawk Down scored well on that part.

Spot on list. This is the definitive list for war movies. Das Boot, The Thin Red Line, A bridge too far, The Longest Day- they are 11-20. I like Rambo, Lone Survivor etc but they can't seriously be in the top 10.

Glory, Gallipolli, Enemy at the Gates, Lawrence of Arabia, A Bridge too Far, All Quiet On The Western Front, Ice Cold In Alex, The Longest Day, MASH, Patton, Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence: Plenty of award winning and popular movies there made before 2013... and we haven't even started on movies that aren't in the English language... Try watching a few movies before you issue a list that has a title other than "Out of those I've actually seen, here are the ten I liked best"!
