It is one of those films that makes a masterpiece out of it's subject cos everyone in front and behind the camera are story tellers making a quality film....

    You said it has to be a war movie where there is combat and yet you snuck movies like Bridge On The River Kwai and The Great Escape which had close to 0 combat on the list and yet threw Letters from Iwo Jima and Black Hawk Down as a honorable? Plus you mentioned Full Metal Jacket and that's it? Plus where's We Were Soldiers? At least if you want to talk about war movie, use something that's believable. You din't put Inglorious Bastards in because it's fictional and you think The Great Escape is true? You think the Japanese treated the British POWs well in Siam (Present-day Thailand)? No! How daft can you guys be!?!

    • @stevebird7265

      The great escape was based on a true event.

    • @MrLolx2u
      @MrLolx2u 8 років тому +4

      The Great Escape used the idea of a real escape plan that was used by American, British and Canadian POW and they were 6-8 of them who thought of digging a tunnel through the toilet but they got caught and was all later shot. The Great Escape was an alternate scenario of the escape so why is it even on the list, I don't know.

    • @bramscheDave
      @bramscheDave 8 років тому +1

      Agreed. We were men left me shaking and an ex-soldier visited me and we watched it together and he said it was very harrowing.
      Lots of good films missing. The Last Samurai was again very moving, especially the last battle scene, it left me unable to talk for around 20 minutes after the first viewing.
      Likewise, Bridge and Escape included, yet Lawrence of Arabia was shown as a film that didn't qualify, because of the lack of battle scenes? It is has many battle scenes, certainly more than the two PoW films...
      How about Tora Tora Tora! The Cruel Sea, Enemy Below? There are dozens of worthy films out there. I agree with most of the selections, but I disagree with some.
      There were also no flyer films, of which there are many excellent ones. Southern Belle, Battle of Britain, Blue Max...

      Speed Reaper You are quite correct as I pointed out No Americans even escaped in the Great Escape only the tunnel and the names of a few of the higher ups and some of the methods they used for diging the tunnels where correct the rest was filled in for entertainment purposes as seeing a bunch of people walking across Germany wouldn't make for much of a movie

    I think that you did a pretty good job with this list, but "The Hurt Locker" doesn't belong. I am an Iraq veteran. The idea that an EOD team would do anything other than EOD is foolish. They are an extremely valuable asset and are very well protected. They do not make their own missions, engage as a sniper team or (the best) pull on wires attached to explosives. The idea that war is a grand horror show and that there is a great deal of moral ambiguity on the battlefield is much better documented in other places. The complete lack of reality in that movie really took me out of it.
    And no, I have nothing against women directing any movies. Kathryn Bigelow appeared to do a great job in "Zero Dark Thirty" and "K-19," but as I am neither CIA or navy, I will not comment on their accuracy. Her movie "Near Dark" may be one of the absolute best horror movies ever made, and that is another genre not known as being dominated by women.
    By the way, Donald Pleasence from "The Great Escape," was an actual WW II British POW.

      I am not a veteran but three of my best friends are and all three served early in the Iraq War as well as Afghanistan later. We caught it in theaters and while watching I knew immediately how unrealistic it was as my buddies starting cracking up. When he grabs that barret I was like wait what? lmao. You just a sniper all of a sudden? The tugging on the wires to pull the explosives out of the ground was hilarious as well, that being said I love that movie. Its very entertaining and I do think it touched on some good psychological effects of being in situations like that. Obviously its much easier for someone like me to be entertained by it as I wasn't actually there but I totally get why actual veterans would not be able to sit through it. Thank you for your service!

      "Enemy at the Gates" piece of shit! This film has fully demonstrated the degree of ignorance of the Western public about the war in the east.This film is a complete collection of Western myths about the war. It has everything, "human wave", "one rifle for three", "terrible NKVD agents" and absolute ignorance about personalities. For example: Khrushchev was a member of the military council, it's like the Commissar at the front commander. He did not have the power to dismiss the front commander.By the way, none of the commanders of the fronts around Stalingrad did not commit suicide. They were all alive until the end of war. Soviet soldiers had enough rifles, because only one factory in Izhevsk, produced 14 thousand rifles PER DAY, and still have plants in Tula, Kovrov and others. The most idiotic scene was about how the haracter of Joseph Fiennes wrote a denunciation of the girl, in which he accuses her of being Jewish (!) I wonder what would be done to him Lev Mehlis chief of all the commissars and a Jewish? State anti-Semitism in the USSR fiction Western propagandists.

      By today's standards, you could classify them as classics but you cannot omit them. To omit something because the technology was not available back then is ludicrous and short-sighted.
      The Dirty Dozen won 4 awards including an Oscar and was nominated for 8; Sands of Iwo Jima was nominated for 4 Oscars, The Longest Day won 2 Oscars. Another 6 wins & 6 nominations. The rest were a star-studded class of exceptional actors.
      While we are at it, I'll throw in an argument for A Bridge to Far which won 3 BAFTA Film Awards. Another 4 wins & 4 nominations. Also Full Metal Jacket (Nominated for 1 Oscar. Another 7 wins & 9 nominations). How bout Midway, Tora, Tora, Tora, Battle of the Bulge...I could do this all day. Gonna hit the Netflix tonight for sure...

      Jarhead was a great dramatic work, and very accurate to the experience of the Gulf War. It probably didn't make the cut cause there was hardly any combat in the story to depict. Which is ironic because that was the whole point of the story!

      Apocalypse Now is a solid film, but it is overrated as shit. It starts out fantastic and is a visual masterpiece as well, but why the fuck does the movie change into a...tribe? It just feels so random and out of place that it almost ruins the movie. All in all, apocylypse now is more of an "adventure" film than a war film.

      I had just gotten an expensive new surround sound audio-video setup and the first movie I played on it was "Saving Private Ryan", I was unable to see it in the theatre so I bought it as soon as the DVD was released.
      I was not prepared to be not only overwhelmed by the opening act, but brought to tears not only by what I saw, but also the sound of war was nearly overwhelming.
      I have never seen anything like it since. An excellent movie with a cast of high-power talent.

      I saw this in a theater with a great sound system. The opening scene was so realistic that I could feel the bullets going by my head. There were a few vets in the theater that actually cried or had to leave because the sound was so real to them.
