Elem Klimov's "Come and See" is a masterpiece. The burning of the village at its climax is one of the most harrowing scenes of the savagery of the war in the east.
Also a very good WW2 movie is the "1944" which focuses on the rather unknown battles on the Eastern front in Estonia (Sinimäed and Saaremaa). It's a sad story of Brother fighting against a Brother (Estonian against another Estonian).

"Come and See" is an incredibly scary movie. And the understanding that it was in real life and real people experienced it only increases this fear. Oh, my God, I don't want a war!
I read once about it that the teenager that plays the main boy, was so badly effected by the method of production that his hair actually went white and he had ptsd by filming end. I Seen parts of it years ago and admit it was too much for me. The HORRORS. It would make Number one as my antiwar movie list.
Can’t think of anything better than Come and See. It truly depicts what war has always been; Horror. Absolutely genius how they filmed it like it was more a horror film than an action war film. With its nerve-racking environment, disturbing imagery, and complete tone of despair, it’s honestly one of the greatest war films of all time. Such raw and terrifying depiction of the insanity and destruction war brings to us all.
Not to mention there was a convict unit that is deceipted in the film that exist. They were so brutal that even the SS were disgusted was shock by they action.
True. Some movies because of action scenes make war look aesthetically pleasing. True war is different I had the opportunity to listen to 2ww soldier, guy got medal for bravery and what he told us was that he basically shat his pants when he saw about 20 enemies, his hand froze on the trigger of machine-gun and that he didn't even look where he was shooting. Managed to get most of then, git medal, truth wasn't pretty tho
I would add From Here to Eternity, Attack (1958 with Jack Palance, Eddie Albert and Lee Marvin) and definitely Twelve O'Clock High (1949 with Gregory Peck and Dean Jagger).

Glad you mentioned Ivan's Childhood (1962) as this is Andrei Tarkovsky's first major film, and an excellent study of what effect the Eastern Front had on children and soldiers, in Russia. Another mention should be Stalingrad (1993) and I personally like Das Boot the best of all the WWII films you mentioned. Good list though!
Dunkirk shouldn't really be there, a pretty lacklustre film, the 1957 film of the same name was much better. The Cruel Sea should definitely have been there, as should Tora, Tora, Tora. I'm must grateful you didn't include Pearl Harbor!
I was glad to see that you included "The Train" one of my all time favorites. I would give "The Battle of Britan" an honorable mention as well as The War Lover with Steve McQueen and Robert Wagner. ( No CGI real B-17's were restored and flown out of a leased British airfield during the filming)
Steve McQueen also appeared in that film about a Japanese POW camp, about a camp survivor who only survived unscathed because he was lower than a sewer rat, that film did have a lot of merit
"Paths of Glory" (1957) Kubrick's controversial WWI film starring Kirk Douglas, Which was pretty much banned in France until 1975, possibly deserved a mention. "Kelly's Heroes" for pure entertainment alone.
Excellent list. I think Schindler’s List is a must inclusion but I would like to suggest Son of Saul as an alternative and perhaps more nuanced portrayal of the Holocaust. I think The Longest Day holds up well as a a documentary style film on D-Day. And finally for sheer breathtaking cinematography The Battle of Britain is a must see. Honorable mentions to Tora Tora Tora, Enemy at the Gate, Cross of Iron and for pure escapism, the fictional drama The Eagle has Landed.

There have been so many war films over the years, and many would qualify for inclusion in the top 15. If I may recommend some Soviet classics as some people here might not be familiar. They fought for their country 1975(ussr) Very powerful movie, with amazing acting, director who shot the famous Russian version of "War and Peace" Most people in it participated in war, so were representing their experience. m.imdb.com/title/tt0073488/ TORPEDO BOMBERS 1984 Also another powerful movie m.imdb.com/title/tt0262052/ Osvobojdenie (1970-1989l) Maybe not that great as a story, but including it for the battle scenes. Regularly director used thousands of actual soldier for the big fighting scenes. m.imdb.com/title/tt5300238/ If I may include personal option. Point with Soviet movies is that they usually do not show gruesome scenes of limbs shot off like in "Saving private Ryan", but aim for the extreme emotional involvement and horror which, unlike gruesome scenes( which shock you only once and in the begining), put you in the needed emotion every time. I do not mean to offend anyone with this, just stating what I noticed.
Thanks for the suggestions. We're actually going to be making a video when we return from our break looking at the best Soviet War films! So really appreciate your input! :)
Come and See is the only option I can think of. It accurately illustrates the horrors of war throughout history. It was brilliant how they filmed it as if it were a horror picture rather than an action war film. It is, without a doubt, one of the best war pictures of all time, with its tense setting, frightening images, and bleak tone. Such a visceral and horrifying representation of the madness and devastation that war brings to all of us.

Great list. I do find the non American war movies are the most realistic. Movies like fury and Dunkirk just leave you angry with its impossible unrealistic portrayals.
My grandfather was at Gallipoli, then the Somme and stayed there in France in & out (Etables Sept '17)of the trenches till the war ended and he finally got home in 1919. He would never talk talk about combat. He said "War is hell!" He spoke about the pre-dug holes in the front line trenches where one hopefully flicked, the German stick grenades into.. Yes, all of those films depicted some sort of intolerable hell. They should definitely should NOT glamorize any war. Yes, Saving Private Ryan is realistic and done with a huge budget. Das Boot was incredible. But as one commentator said, the Russian front was under represented. "Cross of Iron" captures a little bit of realism of the horrors and futility of war on the Russian Front. Movies like Kelly's Heroes are purely propaganda.
There was no such a thing as “the Russian front”, moreover there was no Russia on the political map, sir. Perhaps you’re talking about the Eastern front and the USSR?
@@kanstantsinloichyts3605 Sir, you are probably right. But here in the West, the Western news media often called what you call the Eastern Front, as the Russian Front. It was Germany's Eastern Front.
"Private Ryan" has so many unrealistic, bullshit scenes, starting with the beach scene where soldiers are being pierced by bullets ten feet under water. Any bullet stops dead after about an inch after having hit water. "Cross of Iron" is basically just an action movie that uses WW2 as a background. The most realistic actual war movie listed here is "Das Boot". But agreed, KH and basically every major American war movie from the 1950 and -60s is silly hero worship.
Fury do be not making it on the list and im not suprised That movie with the Tiger scene and the final battle was too disgusting too watch and a real pain
Those are some good movies, but what about "T - 34" and "Enemy at the gates". In my opinion those 2 along with the "Saving private Ryan" would make the top 3.
It may surprise you, but Enemy at the gate is regularly put on Worse WW2 movies lists by both reviewers and historians together with such clunkers as Pearl Harbor. It is pure Hollywood brooha and seen as disrespectful western concoction created by people who wanted to create a silly spectacle.
Maybe you should take a look at When Trumpets Fade. It was unlucky enough to be released in the same year as Saving Private Ryan, so it got less attention. And it's not exactly about a hero, but an anti-hero. A soldier who doesn't want to die in another country. I found it a good movie, real human emotions. Nobody wants to die and heroes...well, not everybody is one.
Recently re watched A midnight clear and wasn't disappointed it still held the same feeling as when I was younger and first watched it. The cast alone was great.
A personal favorite, for its simple but (to me) profoundly moving moving portrayal is A Walk in the Sun about a platoon landing in Italy, walking 6 miles inland to capture a farmhouse. Sounds simple enough.... but it showed the first combat stress breakdown I’d ever seen in the movies, shows average cynical GI’s who aren’t and all in all a very human portrayal. Well worth viewing-- not claiming it’s #1, but certainly top 15. Also, Cruel Sea and The Enemy Below are 2 of the finest naval war pictures
The best films about the war are Soviet and Russian films. Because the worst war was in the east. The Americans say the Omaha beach landing is a massacre. In the battle for Moscow, so many soldiers perished on each side every hour.
The worst war is wherever there’s combat. Whether in Europe or the Pacific. The landing at Normandy was the beginning of the end of the war. Tremendous unnecessary loss of life due to a little corporal’s psychotic vision.

I know that its not as known in the USA but The unknown soldier is said by many soldiers and eaven American soldiers to be one of the most accurate war films ever made
I must add, I believe the 2017 film "Darkest Hour" is one of the most underrated, and one of the greatest War films, at least of the 2010's. It deserves more credit, not just as a companion peice to the film "Dunkirk", which inadvertently overshadows the film in question in any conversation, but as a standalone masterpiece, and as a sort of British answer to the 1970 classic "Patton". I for one, would much appreciate that the film receives its just reward, and approval from the wider war film fan groups of the internet.
"Der Untergang" is really awesome movie and Bruno Ganz as Hitler is unforgettable. I think the chart should also include the Finnish war film "The Unknown Soldier" (Tuntematon sotilas), directed by Aku Louhimies 2017. It tells the story of Finnish soldiers in the war against the Soviet Union in 1941-1944. The film is based on Väinö Linna's famous novel. The Estonian war film "1944" (2015) is also very good.

Any list of "top films" is very subjective and personal but, even in "honourable mentions", Inglorious Bastards cannot be part of the list since it's definitely not a WWII film, it's an allegory, as well as Apocalypse Now is not a film about the Vietnam War.

True. Some movies because of action scenes make war look aesthetically pleasing. Point with Soviet movies is that they usually do not show gruesome scenes of limbs shot off like in "Saving private Ryan", but aim for the extreme emotional involvement and horror which, unlike gruesome scenes( which shock you only once and in the begining), put you in the needed emotion every time.

Great list. I do find the non American war movies are the most realistic. Movies like fury and Dunkirk just leave you angry with its impossible unrealistic portrayals.
Come and see is the best. Would like to see Unknown soldier on the list.
Good to read your story
I give respect to these people they gave it their all.
Fury do be not making it on the list and im not suprised
That movie with the Tiger scene and the final battle was too disgusting too watch and a real pain
April 9th, Grave of the Fireflies, and A Midnight Clear are some other contenders imo
Recently re watched A midnight clear and wasn't disappointed it still held the same feeling as when I was younger and first watched it. The cast alone was great.

You are correct.
Saw it once.
Stayed with me.
Watched it twice, a masterpiece arthouse, but not a real re-visit kind of film.
Mr Spikie Spike yeah, it's really not meant to be enjoyed
A personal favorite, for its simple but (to me) profoundly moving moving portrayal is A Walk in the Sun about a platoon landing in Italy, walking 6 miles inland to capture a farmhouse. Sounds simple enough.... but it showed the first combat stress breakdown I’d ever seen in the movies, shows average cynical GI’s who aren’t and all in all a very human portrayal. Well worth viewing-- not claiming it’s #1, but certainly top 15. Also, Cruel Sea and The Enemy Below are 2 of the finest naval war pictures
Excellent movie, and yes, should be top 15
Cruel Sea has been my number 1.
Yes, A Walk in the Sun, should on this list. Great film.
Three often overlooked masterpieces: «Die Brücke» 1959 by Bernhard Wicki, «Die Letzte Chance» 1945 by Leopold Lindtberg and «The Story of G.I. Joe» 1945 by William A. Wellman

And Dunkirk but not the Unknown Solider. And what is when Eagles dare doing on any list.
I know that its not as known in the USA but The unknown soldier is said by many soldiers and eaven American soldiers to be one of the most accurate war films ever made
Torille!

Hacksaw Ridge? 🤣 🤣 🤣 Awful
Harts War? 🤣 🤣 🤣 Seriously.
@@sandersson2813 ...If you can tell us WHY, it will be interesting.
@@sunrisings292 Hacksaw Ridge is cheesy American nonsense and Harts War is just as bad.
Americans just can't do anything without such a cheesy element.
In a list of hundreds of possible WW2, I wouldn't have those anywhere near.
@@sandersson2813 ..."Harts War is just as bad....".---The movie tried to show a bit of the racist hypocrisy of the US segregated forces (even as POWs), supposedly fighting another racist enemy "for freedom". Perhaps US filmmakers can explore more on this matter.
@@sandersson2813 ..."Hacksaw Ridge is cheesy...".---Showing a decorated soldier saving lives and refusing to shoot anybody was a good take. In other armies at the time this guy would have been executed as coward/traitor and forgotten. Perhaps, many were.
Grave of the fireflies is an amazing animated movie from Studio Ghibli about the firebombing of japan, one of the most heartbreaking movies to watch.
Yes. A big mistake leaving this one out. Especially with dross like Dunkirk getting in.
Any list of "top films" is very subjective and personal but, even in "honourable mentions", Inglorious Bastards cannot be part of the list since it's definitely not a WWII film, it's an allegory, as well as Apocalypse Now is not a film about the Vietnam War. In both cases war is just a film set, nothing more.
I'm surprised Tora! Tora! Tora! didn't make the final list.
Yes, especially since Tora! Tora! Tora! Was pretty good
Too long, too dragged out, just too much of a documentary. The movie had no "soul".
Cross of Iron. Best movie ever.
Was disappointed captain America: the first avenger didn't make the list
It isnt ww2 its a fantasy film stupid
@@aricwiddershoven1958 I don't want to do this but I just can't help my self.
r/wooooooooooooooosh
“The Enemy Below” was one of the best. I have spoken to WWII veterans who served on Destroyers, Destroyer Escorts, and Submarines. When ever ‘best motion pictures of WWII’ came up this film was always mentioned. To a man they all stated it was one of the most realistic movies that depicted their service in the war.
One of my all time favorite movies.
Paul Verhoven's 'Blackbook' was an excellent flick from the Dutch perspective of ww2 things...
I think he also did "Soldier of Orange".
if we're throwing out recommendations, here's a few I haven't seen mentioned in the comments: Memphis Belle ('90), Midway ('73), Life is Beautiful ('97), Flying Tigers ('42), The Enemy Below ('57), In Harms Way ('65)
Battle of Britain ('69), Tora! Tora! Tora! ('70) and The Longest Day ('62)
@@kyleJohn1997 yes, Tora Tora Tora should defenatly have been on this list. Toss Casablanca and add Tora Tora Tora
Good no1 choice. Check out "Closely observed trains" one of my favourite humourous ones.
Tchec film, a good one.
Fortress of war (Russian) movie the charge was the best part
I love how one of the movies was made during WWII.
Come And See is very confronting and compelling but Casablanca, whilst being a classic is hardly a WW2 movie imo.
I agree. As good as it might be, it doesn't have its place here. WWII is only a background for the characters.
Where is Fury, Inglorious Bastards, The boy in the stripped pajama?
Inglorious bastards is in the honorable mentions, i havent checked the rest but u should probably watch the whole video first before complaining
@@klums7651 yeah checked it. Its my fault sorry bro chill ✌️
Fury is shit. It's absurd.
Fury is garbage and Inglorious is fiction in all but setting.
Flags of our Fathers and Cross of Iron. Definitely should be on zee list!!
Letters from iwo Jima was miles better than flags
Cross of Iron ,best ever.
Flags is a bit problematic now considering that two of the main characters, Corpsman John Bradley and PFC Rene Gagnon, are no longer recognized as being in that photo.
World War II has been the most covered period in regards to war movies, and so we're well aware that there are many fantastic films that we couldn't cover in this list, we could have just as easily expanded this to a Top 50, and who knows, maybe one day we will. With so many takes on this vital part of history from different perspectives and different nations. Please leave your own opinions down below. We tried to provide you with an expanded list of 15 picks and 10 honourable mentions, but the list could have gone on. Thank you, we hope you enjoy!
Thank you
The heroes of Telemark is a grenat movie, try it out
@@giannicherchi4685 We have seen 'The Heroes of Telemark' and you're right, it is a great movie. Kirk Douglas is brilliant as usual!
The Pacific Theatre is very little covered in movies but I would list Tora! Tora! Tora! in the honourable mention list. Also Enemy At The Gates for the Eastern Front. It was a very good book covering the entire siege of Stalingrad of which Vasili Zeitsev took up about eight pages.
Tora, Tora, Tora!, Midway (2019),
The best ww2 movies are German. Period.
No propaganda, no pride, no glory. Only the war and its misery.
Stalingrad (1993) is for me the best movie about ww2 and it was not even mentioned, that's whz I couldn't care less about this video. Other absolute masterpieces: Das Boot (1981), Der Untergang (2004), Die Wannseekonferenz (the 1984 version).
the opening scene of saving private ryan its the best part of the movie. it just shows how terrifying and brutal WWII really was
Agreed. The rest was typical Spielberg schmaltz
It was nothing if you compare it with the battle of stalingrad or koursk
@@fatalmokrane Easy for you to say. Tell that to the men who died on those beaches.
