    2020 Episode 16: Top 12 World War I Films
Welcome back to our newest instalment in our war series. With World War II and modern war-related films always taking the limelight, World War I has been left relatively untouched in the world of cinema, so we wanted to take this chance to have a look at some of the movies that portray this important part of history. I strongly recommend Serbian movie "Marš na Drinu" (could be translated as Marching to Drina river) from 1964. It has some technical issues (sound and special effects not brilliant), but movie itself is great. It's story about Serbian artillery battery during Battle of Cer in 1915. Movie deserves at least honourable mention in this list.

WWI witnessed the end of the Austrian- Hungarian, Ottoman, German and Russian Empires. That final one also saw the end of the Tsars. And that war of 1914- 1918 brought about such drastic changes, not only on the battlefields, but also in all facets of society that, when fighting ended in November 1918, the world bore little, if any resemblance, to that of August 1914- when WWI began.

Prime example of why WW1, ~ONE~ 1, O.N.E, UNO, needs more attention, more movies so these dingbats out there can finally realize that there was a whole FIRST world war before their beloved overly saturated and celebrated WW2.

So it's definitely not far-fetched to assume there's a lot of Cold War propaganda going on with the amount of American WWII films out there. Totally underrated and not even mentioned great WW1 films.
    1. Captain Conan. Exellent film about french stormtrooper.
    2. Uomini contro. Really dark and depressing film about Italian front
    3. Deathwatch. It is a not realistic mistic horror, but it is pure concentration of the WWI spurit of the dirt, gas and blood

I really really recommend a Serbian movie "King Peter the First", a newer movie. Really well done and tells a story of multiple characters, real life accurate lives and story of the youngest soldier in WW1 and of course, King Peter the First who went into battles. Depicts the most important battles of WW1, since everything started in Serbian Kingdom at that time. Most bone-chilling moment in the movie is when the Serbian army was forced to retreat through harsh Albanian mountains, not only hunger, flus, sickness, cold weather were the problem but the Albanians who killed the weakest that were left behind. Depicts every detail of Serbia in WW1. I really really recommend that movie, as the movie progress it gets more darker.

WWI is especially important for Canada’s national identity, the losses we suffered were catastrophic, so, while not necessarily on the level of the films on your list, you might be interested in Passchendaele, a very good 2008 film about Canada’s 10th Battalion. Also, DW Griffith’s Hearts of the World is a controversial but very effective 1918 film, bordering on propaganda, that has the advantage of actually being partially filmed in the trenches of WWI. You may also be interested in both adaptations of Somerset Maugham’s novel The Razor’s Edge, the first from 1946 with Tyrone Power is probably the better film, but the second, 1984, stars Bill Murray (!), and I was quite taken with it when it came out, but have no idea if it aged well.

Monicelli's "La Grande Guerra" is an adaptation of both Emilio Lussu's "One year on the plateau" (Un anno sull'altipiano) and Guy de Maupassant "Two friends" (Deux amis).
Francesco Rosi's "Many Wars Ago" (Uomini Contro/Men Against) is known to be the "other italian WW1 film".
Is more serious and grittier than "La Grande Guerra", but it was not less controversial , because of political reasons and anti-war/anti-military sentiment.
