all lies in those movies shown the German people as monsters while in reality is other way around. The real monsters were Roosevelt, which allowed Perl Harbor to happen, Stalin who killed over 100 million of its own people, Churchill, Truman and Eisenhower and that is just for starters

I'd rather watch a movie with subtitles than a movie dubbed to English. I recently watched The Blackout in English and the lip movement was way off. I could tell that the original language of the movie was Russian. All the street signs, stores, building names, etc., in the movie were in Russian but because the movie was dubbed in English, no translation was provided.

I thought that movie showed just how terrible were the US basic infantry weapon was at that time compared to other western nations--in this case the Irish UN Team had the FN-FAL 7.62 weapons which at the time were state-of-the-art. The FN-FAL is still in use by many armies today. It was a true assault rifle and the Irish lads coupled it with the 30 round mag puting out 600 round per minute. The Irish combat team used these GREAT weapons to "even the odds" when deal out misery to the charging Rebels. At the time the US Army was still using the 1935 model M-1 rifle and some units getting the updated but same M-14. A great weapon for WW2 / Korea but not as it turned out for the last 30 years of the 20th and early 21st Century in Vietnam and Desert wars that were to ensue. Oh, yeah, the Army finally did adopt the M-16 but it took years to get it to a point of reliablity and ruggedness that the FN-FAL 7.62 Belgium weapon possessed in 1960.

The latest one is the most wholesome interpretation of the book for me with 17 years in the Finnish military. They also removed the clear bias against professional soldiers and their style of leadership that is blatant in the original book because the writer was of rank and file. It shows more reasonable view on pros and cons of different styles of leadership. And in the end military leadership is about mixing and matching the friendly and strict styles to get most out of your unit. That is the thing I like the most in the newest one. There is no right style to lead people but there are situations where different takes on it are needed. And if you cannot understand those nuances you will be a bad leader.

The problem with the "United Nations Operation in the Congo" or "ONUC" that the Irish at Jadotville were part of (and perhaps part of the reason less recognition was given to them) is that it was meant to be neutral in that countries civil war (as the UN Charter requires them to be) ...but with actions BY UN forces like "Operation Morthor" the Katangese secessionists (understandably IMO) felt that the UN had taken the side of the Congolese central government. If the UN forces WERE acting in the interests of one side, then they were just as much mercenaries as those employed by Katanga. (No blame attributable to the SOLDIERS of course... the blame rests much higher up the UN organisation...but , as usual, the grunts bear the pain...)

-- 1944 (2015), I think Estonian movie. Best obscure movie I have seen so far. It depicts the war from both sides, both Axis and Soviet Union, from the perspectives two Estonian soldiers fighting on opposing sides
-- 9th April- Danish movie, story of a bicycle reconnaissance squad during the half a day Danish invasion. No demonisation of enemy, enemy attacks in military formations, wing by wing, suppression fire, maneuvre, etc. not the masses of headless meat thrown into the grinder for cinematic effect. No music editing, just simple, accurate life...
-- Brest Fortress (2010), Russian war movie depicting the Brest Fortress in the opening days of Barbarossa. Deeply politicised content, but cinematic appeal. This seems to be a common theme with Russian movies in the past 10- years plus
-- Panfilov’s 28 (2016), Russian war movie depicting the defense of Moscow. Politicised, but entertaining, that follows more closely in the cinematic formula of commercial war movies. Some parts were ridiculously unrealistic, but then I watched the movie in 2096 HD, so I enjoyed the experience.
-- Das Boot (1981)- watch the directors cut.One of the few German war movies to be made... It's a classic by now.
-- Stalingrad (1993)- German war movie.
-- Der Untergang (2004)- German war movie. Last days in the bunker, attempts to be a bit more realistic and less politicised.
-- Anonyma. Eine Frau in Berlin (2008) German war movie. Real story of woman trapped in Berlin during last days of the battle of Berlin

I think they mainly just marketed it under another name in the US, which admittedly does make up a large number of native English speakers and is by far the worlds largest English speaking country so it's easy to confuse things.

The thing about 9th Company is that it took an overwhelming Soviet victory in real life and turned it into a bloodbath with one survivor, purely for drama. In reality, according to Wikipedia,
the 9th Company, 345th Independent Guards Airborne Regiment was pinned down under heavy fire on Hill 3234 from 7-8 January 1988. They managed to stop three attacks by an estimated 200-250 mujahideen. The company lost a total of 6 men and killed around 200 mujahideen. Another 28 out of the total 39 were seriously wounded. Four of the killed soldiers were posthumously awarded the golden star of the Hero of the Soviet Union. The unit was in constant communication with headquarters and received everything the regimental commander, Colonel Valery Vostrotin, could provide in terms of rations, ammunition, reinforcements, and helicopter evacuation of the wounded.

I saw Defiance, and although it was good, and the actors were very good, I only watched it AFTER I read the BOOK that it was based on, also titled Defiance. The movie tended to bend the truth a little with what I call "Hollywood-ism". The book in reality was much more startling, riveting, and entirely true. And even more appalling was how that book could not even be found in the entire 10-library system, in conservative Somerset County, NJ, where I had been living at the time. I had just stumbled across a copy in a more liberal Union County library, started reading it (partially a military history, written by a non-contemporary woman, decades later, no less!), and was gripped by it right away, and couldn't put it down till the place closed, many pages later. As good as the movie was, it misses the point that these 1200 Jewish partisans were not fighting for vengeance, as the movie makes it appear (looking from hindsight, 50 years later), but rather they fought only when necessary to survive. The book mentions other partisan leaders who fought strictly for vengeance against the Wehrmacht, and were wiped out, as a result. This group, led by the Bielski brothers, only fought when necessary to survive, and did survive, as a result. The book also explains why so many Jews in Eastern Europe were unable to survive the systematic annihilation, imposed on them by the Nazi invaders, because few were farmers who could live off the land, fight back, and survive in the forest wilderness, like the Bielski brothers were, could, and did. So many were doctors, professors, educators, engineers, businessmen, politicians, scientists, artists, etc, and while these certainly are great professions, they were unused to living off the land, fighting in the wilderness, and surviving in the woods, in the winter, as the Bielskis were. And so they inadvertently became easy targets for Nazi annihilation, once the local armies had been defeated by the Wehrmacht. But the Bielskis survived, as did most of those who joined with them-a fascinating, true story.

The 5-part miniseries version of the 2017 Finnish movie "The Unknown Soldier" is one of the best WWII products made. Admittedly I am biased as I am Finnish and had a grandfather that fought in that war, but I think it is a brilliant representation of the parts of WWII that most westerners don't know about.

If you liked "The Unknown Soldier", AND you are of Finnish ancestry, try watching the heartbreaking movie, "1944". I saw it recently, and it blew my mind. Granted, it takes place in Estonia, not Finland, but the shit that happened there was even WORSE, than what went on in Finland. And, by the way, they are both Baltic-Finn peoples, of closely related ancestry, located right next to each other (virtually), and now, are both fully INDEPENDENT countries, the only two that are. The history of this group of people, who 3000 years ago populated an area from what is today Berlin to Moscow (virtually all of what is now northeastern Europe), is truly amazing. And they weren't Slavic, nor Germanic, nor Celtic. They spawned many other groups of peoples, but most of their cultures and languages are gone, having been subsumed by others, however, the Finns and the Estonians are still around, and fiercely defending their people and culture. And the Lithuanians, Latvians and Hungarians are distantly related to them, also. A fascinating group of people, that's for sure!

Recommend "El Alamein: Bond of Honour" or as it was originally released in Italy as "El Alamein: La Linea Del Fuoco" : depicts the Italian perspective of the battle. Wasn't often that Churchill would praise the axis forces but he did with the Folgore Parachute regiment in North Africa and in a speech to Parliament, he recalled: “We must honour the men that were the Lions of the Folgore.” It's currently on Amazon Prime viewing in the UK.

You missed perhaps the best and most disturbing of them all..."Come and See". As someone who lived and worked many years in the former Soviet Union and is married to a woman born and raised in the Soviet Union and we both have parents who fought in the war in Europe, her father winning 2 "Orders of the Red Star" and my father having been a tank commander in the 3rd Armored...it is difficult for me to watch. My wife can't. It brings to life the scenes one can only imagine by visiting Soviet War Memorials. It is, at the same time something everyone should see, and no one should ever see.

@@jackwoods535 It's called Treptower Park. I have been there, have you? It is a Soviet Memorial built on land donated by the German government to the USSR as a memorial and cemetery. The Monument was designed the Soviet Russian architect Yakov Belepolsky. There are 7,000 Red Army soldiers buried there, of the 80,000 who died in the battle of Berlin between April 16 and May 2. The 40 ft. tall monument depicts the destruction of Nazism (not a cherished memory in Germany) by the Red Army.
The monument is called what you said by some Nazi apologists. Is that what you call it?
There are few people who call it that in Germany...not many Nazi apologists in Germany. It is not the official name, nor the intent of the monument. (Obviously, having been built by the Russians)
There were atrocities on both sides and they are not pleasant to imagine. I do not condone any such acts.
I have also been to monuments in St. Petersburg (Leningrad) a tribute to more than 2 million people starved and bombed to death by Nazis in an inhuman siege, Moscow, Volgograd (Stalingrad) Babi Yar Ravine in Kiev a mass grave for 300,000 civilians murdered by Nazis, the Memorial of Glory in Kharkov (my wife's home city) a mass grave for 274,000 people...more than the entire number of Americans killed in the European Theatre, just from ONE city.
Yes, I have been to all those places...and to Auschwitz in Poland. I wish all Americans could see them.
I have innocently approached historical plaques in city parks or on city streets in Ukraine, Russia and Belarus, you know, like the roadside markers we have here that says "Lincoln was here" or some such...only to find that the plaque memorializes the murder of 400 children killed by Nazis and thrown into a bomb crater, or some such. Yeah, nice stuff. We don't see that in American parks.
My father had threatened to cut off two of my toes had I been drafted for Vietnam. He said no one should see war. He never went to war after he returned, though he served as an instructor, retiring after 22 years in 1956. He hated war. In later years I asked him, while sitting around a campfire on a hunting trip, "Why did you stay in the Army?" He said he hoped his experience prevented "some other kid" from being killed. It probably did.
The 3rd Armored liberated a death camp near Nordhausen, (March 30, 1945). He brought home photos, but never showed them to anyone. I found them in his old footlocker in 1993 after he passed away. My father met with the Russians at Dessau on the Elbe. I have been there also. It always struck me the two things he often repeated...that the Red Army had a lot of women soldiers and that none of the Russians knew if their families were safe. The Americans always had the comfort that their wives and children were safe...very far away. I don't think most people even think about that. Of all the "war stories" he could tell...he often repeated those two things. Strange. I always thought, anyway.
I wish he had had the opportunity to meet my father-in-law who has also passed away now. Unfortunately, they never did.
Some Nazi apologists will say that this never happened or it is a hoax. I have sat at the table with many people who experienced it.
I find movies that depict horrible atrocities against people, like "Come and See", difficult to watch, yes.
