@@kac5599 If that was some kind of anti-vax post: the live virus is orders of magnitude more dangerous. As you well know, being aware, the pandemic is ongoing.
Same here. Rogers laid me off in December 2009 for "restructuring" in the department. The "restructuring" was laying me off and hiring someone else. The reason they wanted me gone is because I knew my rights and wouldn't let them take advantage of me. Then, I was encouraging others to stand up for themselves- and corporate doesn't like that. At least I got a nice 6 month package and was able to find a better job afterward. Everything happens for a reason- and it's usually because something better awaits!
No Canada needs to get back to local news first. This is a good time for hyper localized news podcasters--Rachel is not one--to bring back coverage of whats been happening locally instead of the curren ecosystem of national fear prawn
@V1sual3y3z Steve boots, search boots on the ground, or just Steve boots. He's a leftist, ex teacher from the prairies who has been growing this last year. Top notch Canadian political content.
@V1sual3y3z I saw your other comment and realized I didn’t answer the question you asked, my bad. He sent his followers to the page of a lady named Chloe, I forget the last name or handle. She's funny, she was playing the role of "Poilievres ai assistant" or something in a skit. Fun stuff.
I really want all the Canadian political commentators to start working together, at least telling their audiences about each other. I can imagine if the rational national, steve boots etc promoted you, plus sandy & nora talk politics and others I don't know of. it would help a lot to build a community that connects with each other.
That's exactly what I've been thinking for a long time, Canada needs independent media influencers like Rachel and the others too, I'm really thankful for the work she's been doing.
What an opportunity this would be for broadcasters and listeners. My 18 year old was talking to me today about how she could possibly trust any kind of media anymore- this is a problem. Independent journalists are a solution. Giving Knitty a shout out also.
As an entrepreneur, it is vital to be able to learn how you can handle things completely on your own accord. Create a strategic plan for yourself, even if it is short. Leverage Large Language Models to assist in planning and filling some mental gaps. Create measurable, possible goals. Get a team around you, especially if they are people you look up to, get them to be advisors. Don't try to figure out everything on your own. I enjoy the professionalism and dedication to journalistic integrity. We need more of that!
I'm so sorry! You're a strong voice in Canadian news/politics so hopefully an opportunity will present itself soon. Meidas Touch just announced they want to expand their network to Canada & the UK. Maybe reach out to them to see if they're looking for Canadian contributors.
Rachel, I am going to repeat to you what I messaged you about on TikTok, but with a little more icing on top. You are a smart and inspiring journalist. I started following you because of your posts and content. I will continue to do so and I would encourage all people who are looking for fact-based journalism to do so. I also would like to see a collective channel made up of journalists who won't tolerate being called "The Media" but as respected journalists and reporters who practice the craft of Speaking Truth to Power. Be brave, be forward-thinking and above all else, be you. Peace and Love!
I think "all this" sounds very scary indeed, Rachel! I'm really sorry to hear that this happened. I was excited to hear about Bubble Pop launching, and hope it receives more support in the wake of this news. From more than just this one worried Yank. I would love to see podcasts and other long-form content on this channel. Anything to help it blow up, which I've felt has been due for quite a while. It doesn't feel like there's much on this platform in terms of actual Canadian news and politics. I think many of the intelligent members of the North American political class have taken note of the immense success the Trump campaign achieved by engaging with "new media." And it does often feel like more of that intelligence lies north of the 49th than anywhere in the DNC... So you may very well be right when you talk about seeing a big opportunity in this moment. I'm sure you'll make quick work of seizing it. The fact you got to interview Jagmeet Singh definitely bodes well! Best of luck, happy holidays, and we all eagerly await the work you have coming soon =)
Sorry to hear that. When I lived in Ottawa I got laid off a job the week before Xmas, which, obviously they could have easily waited to do until the next year but, whatever. And of course it sucked. These things don’t happen in a vacuum though and if you reframe it as a positive thing then it’s just paving the way for your next opportunity, which WILL happen! Merry Christmas!
I'm all for more Canadian voices and media content free from influence and I'm glad to see you branching out. I'll follow you and hear the stories you want to share.
I won't stop watching, I will look for your podcasts, I will tell others about your independent journalism endeavours. I really wish you all the very best and hope you find joy over the holidays.
Hi Rachel. I’m sorry to hear that you were laid off. Your reporting gives me hope during these difficult times for Canada. I wish you every success with your podcast. I’m cheering for you! 🇨🇦
If it’s any encouragement, this video crossed my feed today, allowing my to discover your work and find that I agree not only with a lot of your takes, but also on the need for media like this to be available! Looking into the ways to listed of supporting you further.
Canada does need a more organized collection of independent journalists, like MeidasTouch and Crooked Media. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with!
@ yes! I love Steve, Lisa, and Brittlestar's conversations too. Plus the Rational National and a few others. It would be great to see them all connect and build something financially sustainable together.
Ever since the incoming administration in the US threatened Canada with 25% tariffs, independent media outlets like MeidasTouch have been following and covering Canadian Politics a lot closer. Perhaps it would beneficial to them to have some form of Canadian Arm or contact that they can collaborate with - especially when they keep going around referring to Doug Ford as the Prime Minister of Ontario. (PUKE)
I mean, technically, he is. The reason we started using premier for provincial prime ministers was to differentiate between them and the federal, but they are still prime ministers. Premier is just a shortened version of the french term for prime minister.
I'm sorry to hear about your layoff, but it seems it's inspiring you to go after the next level of your career. Best of luck, and I hope your podcast is a success!
Good luck Rachel! Lots of us have been where you are and believe me, it's a terrible thing that often turns out to be a terrific thing. Have a Merry Christmas!
Happy to support your work on Substack and look forward to the podcast. In this day of managed news messaging, it is critical (at least IMO) to have independent professional journalists providing a balanced view of complex events. Many thanks to all you have done and will continue to do.
We are there for you!! I was laid off last year, and it was the best thing that ever happened to me, i got a better job and the same will happen to you.

That sucks to hear Rachel. I found your channel a couple of months ago and I have really enjoyed your coverage and take on Canadian news. I hope starting your own independent media company works out, as I think there needs to be more voices in that space than what is there now which consists of too many far-right, grifting organizations.
I am sorry you got laid off again! I was also disappointed you got laid off at Global and I am sorry that they are in a spiral. I am to the right of you politically slightly but I do feel you are a good journalist.

I'm sorry for your hardships, it definitely doesn't reflect the work you are clearly capable of. Times are tough around Christmas for a sustained substack subscription, but I have an idea. You are one of the only genuine canadian news sources I'm aware of, Walrus is good. Few others. Thanks as always
I know what it's like and it is perfectly okay to feel scared. I've got your back and many of us do as well. If I may suggest something to you, please don't let that bit of news take hold of your life. You are much better than that and also much too smart to stay stuck. Start your thing and those who care will support you. Now is a good time as ever to start something that deserves your full energy, much more than that pay cheque ever did. Rachel, I have no doubt you've got what it takes to be huge. I think you could do a great Canadian version of The David Packman show or something in that ballpark. Good luck!
Wht type of company lays people off just before christmas?
12 днів тому+4
Lots of them do. Supposedly the reasoning is "We should lay them off before they go spending all of their money on Christmas presents." Only a week before Christmas is far too late for that in most cases, so then it's just cruel because it ruins the holidays for their whole family. Waiting until January would be a lot kinder but that requires compassion.
Tough time to be in any kind of paid media position. In Edmonton all of our longstanding, free print magazines went out of business due to a lack of advertising revenue. Mainstream media is struggling too. Nobody bothers with cable anymore as all the decent TV is on streaming services, but with that goes local news. There are no more common platforms. This is the age of the extreme echo chamber.
Steve Boots pointed me here. Happy to engage the algorithm for more Canadian Content & Canadian Content creators, particularly those holding accountable our political leaders. I'm related to the CEO of Renaissance Repair and Supply & I've heard how businesses are preparing for the incoming political climate, and I think it's important for everyone to be well informed, now more than ever.
Advice: use the next few months to find a better job than waitressing, something that allows you to pay bills but still work on your side project. If you don't, you'll likely have to do that, anyway, but with less time, and at a worse job. What you want to start takes a lot longer to monetize than you're anticipating. Maybe you'll be lucky. I doubt it. It's a risky bet. Most people are in your position, and can't afford to pay another subscription.
My sincere condolences on the loss of your job: you're very talented and have a solid skillset and media personality. Keep going: you WILL be able to launch yourself independently and keep your integrity.
Starting to see more trolls showing up than usual, so that's a silver lining that you're going to get bigger soon. I subscribed to your substack, though can't do a paid subscription yet. Do you have a Patreon or something? I can throw a few bucks a month as I do for other creators I like. Best of luck! I'll be watching!
I don't care who or what, laying people off a week before Christmas is THE shittiest thing it's possible to do.
Completely agree!
Yet I’ve seen this dozens of times in the last decade. It’s as if some bosses thrive on this level of perversion.
I bet you would say that about Joseph goebbells
I remember losing my job right before christmas cause I didnt take the safe and effective. My replacement died so i guess it could have been worse.
