  • This year we saw the Pikes Peak hillclimb record being smashed by the fully-electric I.D. R by Volkswagen Motorsport but this wasn't the first appearance of the German team at The Race to the Clouds.
    Back in 1985 they entered the event with a twin engined Golf, powered by two tuned NA 1.8 16V engines, producing around 390 bhp overall. Despite of its impressive numbers the car was very much running out of power by the time it reached the summit.
    The following year a second attempt was made. The upgraded Golf was running two turbocharged 1.3 litre Polo engines but still, even if the turbos helped at high altitudes, the power was too low before the finish line.
    So for their third attempt in 1987 they decided to built a whole new car in collaboration with open-wheel specialists Kaimann Racing starting from a riveted monocoque and a Kevlar shell. The "bi-motor" configuration was kept featuring now two 1.8-litre 16V engine taken from their Golf GTI model. Each engine (one at the front and one at the back of the car) carried a turbocharger, and had a mechanical throttle system that would link their outputs as necessary. And that combined output was massive: 652 hp which allow the car to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.4 seconds.
    Because of its independently driven axles, the driver could select front, rear, or all-wheel drive if needed (both if one engine started to misfire or if the driver wanted to adjust the car’s balance). The engines were mounted longitudinally to allow for the fitting of Hewland five speed gearboxes.
    The Golf Pikes Peak was driven by Jochi Kleint. It has proven to be fast straight away, having the best time by the halfway point. Yet just three turns and a quarter-mile from the finish line, Kleint had to stop: a suspension ball joint failed, making it too risky for him to finish.
    Recently it has been restored by Volkswagen Classic team who also had to make some changes to the cooling system and other stuffs. Plus the car was de-tuned to roughly 493 hp. Oh, completely forgot about it! You can understand how special, extreme and well designed is this car by its weight: 1,020 kilos (2,249 lb).
    Enjoy it being driven at the 2018 Festival of Speed! Pay attention at 1:24 and at 2:16 where you can actually hear the two engines working/revving!

    Once upon a time, there lived a lanky German rally driver. He was so good that he won the European rally championship in 1979 driving an Opel Ascona 400. One day in 1986, he drove a twin engine Golf twin engine up Pikes Peak in Colorado and finished third overall.

    I have thought about this since my first MK1. The only think I think would be crucial is some form of inline torque sensor for each engine and CPU (fly by wire) throttle control. Then, the CPU can manage each engine's output and thus balance the front/rear output. (variable of course)

      Rare to find a mk3 golf with the engine check light bulb still in these days. Anything over 5000miles and the owner removed the bulb.

    I designed several multi engine cars. This VW is considered rear mid engine / transaxle (engine in front of rear tires) and front engine / transaxle (engine in front of front tires. In my designs, front engine is turned 180 degrees and sits behind front wheels. Engine faces cockpit and transaxle points to front wheels. Far better weight distribution (50 / 50) perfect balance. Engines are synced via electronics. Also, no single engine can have wheels turning faster than other, engines self sync with each other.
    In theory, having both engines hard linked via torque tube is possible. It works even better if a clutch is used to disengage either engine. With electronic sync, driver can pick front or rear engine to power car around town when not racing. 2 SBC 5.0 liter rated at 1,250 hp at wheels. Total 2,500 hp to the ground and 2,500 pound car. 1:1 power to weight ratio is more than twice a F1 race car.

    Hi Bozzy. What a wacky, but great piece of automotive engineering by these VW guys. This thing looks like a handful with that extreme power to weight ratio... very twitchy and nervous-looking. I'll bet it took a highly skilled driver to drive that thing all out, especially on a 1987 prepped Pikes Peak track. Yikes!😲😓 And because computers weren't all the rage back then, those guys had to multitask and make split-second decisions at 100 plus mph sideways on dirt, while trying not to die.😆 Wimpy drivers need not apply. Thanks for sharing this crazy machine with us Bozzy and crew.🙏 Cheers!

      Ciao Mick! As I said in another comment, I love the Festival of Speed just because you always find an insane numbers of these unique, crazy and forgotten cars. I don't know why but being a 1987 car it made me think of how similar a VW Group S rally car could have been. Love the madness engineers had in common (and the drivers too) in those years! Thank you so much for your comment mate ;)

    Can anyone tell me what that aluminium box in the top right corner at 0:32 is? Looks like some sort of crankcase vent system, one side goes to the dry sump reservoir, the other one goes to the intake manifold. Maybe there's a blowoff valve in there? And a permanent vent for the dry sump? But why would they connect the two together?

      @19Bozzy92  6 років тому +3

      Thanks! That's the video I'm waiting to upload the most. It's here, ready to be published.
      Which is the problem? UA-cam.... Maybe you haven't noticed it but UA-cam has some serious issues in the last period, don't know if it's an algorithm problem, notifications not working correctly. Other youtubers reported it too and this Golf Pikes Peak's video is an example: 6000 views in 24h when I have almost 250k subscribers. I was used to see more than 10k views on each uploaded videos (after a day from the upload time) when I had 100k less subscribers last year. And all those videos are thrown away because after 48h they "die" and get stuck at the number of views you see. Sometimes the issue is slight, others quite evident but it's always completely unexpected!
      All this to say Plasa's E36 is a video I'd like to see having the views it deserves. So I'll let you wait... Sorry for that..

    i still don't understand how twin engine cars work.
    so it has two gearbox?
    what if they use different engine.
    i mean one naturally aspirated and one with turbo?

    • @Scorpion951
      @Scorpion951 6 років тому

      Olla Patricia I don’t really know much either but it could be because what they could only use back then was maxed out to this cars engine couldn’t get more power out of it so why not put another one it and double the power to the wheels

    • @ollapatricia1001
      @ollapatricia1001 6 років тому +1

      DatHolyOne so it does really double power the car? because they have to synchronize the two engine to run together, and convert the power and the torque to the wheels as it needs and changing gears at the same time (if it has two gearbox) even with different set up of each engine. or maybe the other one is automatic?

    • @ollapatricia1001

      Cleopatra JDMQueen just like regera?

    • @Scorpion951
      @Scorpion951 6 років тому

      Olla Patricia it’s a lot of work and craftsmanship to the engine and transmission but yes the transmission can be spinning both engines with one gearbox but I’m not sure if they added another fly wheel separate both engines from spinning in the transmission at the same time

      6 inline engines are really long, you need a really big car for that. I know a guy who has two 5 cylinder Volvo engines in his 850 wagon, but it certainly wouldn't fit any other car. It makes 850hp btw :))
